Book Description
When a company decides to make a major organizational changewhether it's a new emphasis on customer service, quality management, restructuring or downsizingmanagers must get the message through to front-line employees, and enlist their support...or the changes will create more turmoil than progress.
Written for busy managers at all levels, Communicating Change offers specific prescriptions for effecting successful change centered around three guiding principles:
- Conveying the message through supervisors
- Communicating face-to-face
- Making the changes relevant to each work area
In addition, a variety of helpful forms, checklists, sample communications, and surveys help managers to quickly put these principles into action.
Customer Reviews:
common sense communication improvements.......2007-01-18
I work as a Communications Specialist... sounds impressive, but really it is all about listening...and this book gives real world examples and steps for improving how you communicate change in your company. Perhaps I enjoy it because it supports my own theory that a chat or memo from the CEO is nice, but who is the guy/woman? really?...the immediate supervisor is the one I interact with everyday... that person is the key to clear communication and the conduit to change.
This is an easy-to-read book, presenting clear practical solutions.
Packed with Knowledge !.......2005-02-23
Nearly every CEO of a large corporation believes that words directly from his or her mouth will inspire front-line employees. Five decades of research show just the opposite, explain consultants and authors T.J. and Sandar Larkin. Their investigations emphasize the importance of communicating change through low-level supervisors, a group that has more credibility with front-line workers. They maintain that CEOs must go beyond simply telling supervisors what to do; they must also listen to these key employees and empower them by taking their suggestions seriously. The authors provide plenty of real-world examples to bolster their case. We recommend this clearly constructed argument to CEOs and to anyone charged with communicating with large numbers of employees. This engaging treatise, a classic, is ready to persuade its next crop of managers.
Good reference.......2003-11-22
My line of consulting has a lot to do with change management and communicating change so this was a good book to refer to for additional ideas and tools for the toolkit. One of the chapters that sticks out in my mind is the one that talks to how people prefer to hear certain types of messages (e.g. from their direct mananger, through an email, at an all hands meeting etc) The author uses actual data from surveys to back up his ideas which I fpund helpful - not only in helping me recommend certain vehicles for communication but also convincing others. Good resource.
A superb book.......2000-06-11
I'm an academic--a professor of corporate communication--and this is one of the few books I recommend to students in this area. Larkin bases every one of his assertions on applied research in organizational communication--very refreshing from the "I did it in my organization, so it must work in your company" perspective of most business authors. Larkin also completely shatters myths around traditional corporate communication practices (e.g. the executive should communicate directly to employees around major change areas), and bases such assertions on research in the area *plus* his own consulting experience (of which he has a great deal). My students also loved this book. If you buy one book on employee/corporate communication, this is the one.
Breath of fresh air.......1999-12-22
After years of being force-fed communications theories that didn't work, it was a real joy to see reality documented. The solutions presented are too simple to be acceptable to anyone more interested in documenting "quality" than running a business. These "rules" help: they work in practice (when was the last time you heard that about a communications theory?): and they will change your world.
Book Description
A how-to on the ancient art of physiognomy, updated and practical. Rosetree's system of Face Reading Secrets ® is designed to open your heart, even as it provides knowledge with uncanny accuracy.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2007-07-03
I ordered three face reading books to try to get as much information as I could. This book by far was the best. She adds a bunch of humor. This book is very well written and easy to read. I recommend this to all who are curious about what the face means. I am very pleased.
Useful and Insightful.......2005-12-10
After reading The Power of Face Reading, I am shocked by the response from "Almost Useless". In her book Rosetree asserts that we all have various challenges as well as styles with which we excell at, and I think Rosetree does an excellent job of expressing our different styles for work, spending money, communication, etc. with great compassion and depth. This is not a "too positive spin on every negative interpretation"; it's more a realistic way of looking at our strenghts and weaknesses.
I also firmly disagree with "Almost Useless"'s assertion that some of the interpretations are "just inaccurate." I have done many readings after reading the book, for friends and people that I've just met, and everyone remarks how surprisingly accurate they are! Rosetree also points out that the traits of our face reveal our propensity for a certain style of being. We are all human and can choose to behave in other ways as we choose. Knowing what are preferences are can help us use them with more strength, and to also gain understanding for the strengths and propensities of others. Brilliant for relationships!
In terms of "putting it all together" for doing face readings, I found this to be no problem. Like I said, I started doing readings for friends and new people I met right away. Rosetree also explicity states to set an intention to be of service, and begin with the features that strike you the most, and then notice what you notice next and go from there. This is what I've adhered to and what has made my readings so successful.
Lastly, I would be cautious with the review titled "Gems for Tabliod and Intellectuals." I might chuckle at these having not read the book. Rosetree's book provides much more depth than these quotes reveal. The book shows us that there are many ways to be in the world, and the beauty is that we can choose. I find it powerfully useful to know my style preferences at my very core.
The best of the best!.......2005-12-03
I know this book. I know this author. Rose Rosetree is a woman of the highest integrity and she is a great force. She's been on this path for many years, researching ancient studies and particularly refining the hidden traits found in faces. Each one of her books is a gift. But the wisdom contained in this one, The Power of Face Reading, showers the reader with clues and tips on discovering the very essence of, say, co-workers, first dates, celebrities, politicians -- any person with whom you might come face to face. For those with a sense of wonder and a hunger to know more, this is an easy read.
Amazing insights.......2005-12-02
I found this book, like all the ones I've read by Rose Rosetree, to be witty, insightful, and very useful. When reading this book, keep in mind that reading faces isn't just a formula, which is a point that Ms. Rosetree makes. The whole face needs to be considered, since it is a reflection of the soul as a whole. I use face reading often, and it's amazing how accurate it is. In addition to the companion book WRINKLES ARE GOD'S MAKEUP, I strongly suggest reading AURA READING THROUGH ALL YOUR SENSES. Combining aura reading with face reading is a very powerful tool and provides a far more complete picture.
Almost useless.......2005-05-02
The author tries so hard not to offend anybody, that she puts too positive spin on every possibly negative interpretation and overemphasizes what would already be considered as a positive one. Also, I found the most interpretations just inaccurate. Examples from nose chapter:
short nose - workaholic
long nose - talent for planning and strategy
straight nose - you work systematically
arched nose - creativity
...
Ok, of course you are supposed to interpret everything and put it all together, eliminating contradictions on the way, but the book falls short on instructions how to do that. There should be a chapter titled "putting it together" where the author should explain the process of face reading: what to look first? how to determine basic information about a person and go from there? Instead the book focuses on details without giving you the big picture.

a MUST read for any business professional.......2003-05-11
Great book! Partnering is the way to do business now and in the future. The book is a fine collection of tools and strategies in leadership and management. It's educational, inspiring and engaging at the same time. A must read for anybody who manages fast pace, competitive businesses
What the future of leadership should be........2003-02-25
This is a book for people who are concerned for building a better future. As someone who has spent a great deal of time studying leadership, I find the focus on doing it better that is found in this book to be quite refreshing. Here we move beyond evolutionary changes to ideas that are quite revolutionary. This is not a book about maintaining the status quo power structures. This is a book about creating new leadership styles where partnership with knowledgeable workers will be needed to ensure organizational success.
The command and control style of leadership is coming to an end. For a leader to succeed in the future they will have to rely on their ability to pull together the talents of many individuals. This will be a leader who respects others, who helps coach and develop real talent, who shares success, and who continuously reinvents her/himself. The book gives us hope for a future where we can be productive without sacrificing our humanity.
The books 30 essays by 42 thought leaders are works derived from a passion for helping others. The inspiration for this book comes from an awareness for new leadership made more apparent by the events of 9/11. All of the royalties from this book will go to help the victims of that tragic day.
Partnering The New Face of Leadership.......2003-01-07
This book is great "airplane" reading. Each chapter is self contained --- usually about 10 to 15 pages, and written by world renowned experts in their field. Partnering is the common theme, but the authors cover a lot of territory.
This book is timely and relevant to today's environmnet. I especially like the idea that all the authors (as if these people need the money) are donating the royalities from sales to the victims of September 11, 2001.

Book Description
`Wexler talks with rich texture about the four faces of capitalism. The author outlines how a leader can learn to adapt and overcome local idiosyncrasies. This book is new and original. It will be useful for academics eager to bring theory to practice.' - Personal
Leaders are made, not born, Mark Wexler argues, and they cannot be understood in a vacuum. There is no simple answer as to why certain people select one leader over others. Those who look for a master story within capitalism to encapsulate the effective leader are, he asserts, caught and blinded within the headlights of a particular worldview. Rather, leaders can be understood and evaluated within the cognitive lens of four distinct and competing worldviews - entrepreneurial, regulatory, communitarian and network.
Exploring the manner in which leaders make and remake themselves in the midst of a changing world, the author shows how they must put together a composite of the skills called for in the four faces of capitalism. He illustrates how and why local leaders develop skills within a worldview and how cosmopolitan leaders, by engaging in reflective practice, cross over into other worldviews and reinvent themselves.
An accessible, interdisciplinary study of a fascinating subject, this volume, now available in paperback, will appeal to scholars and students of leadership, as well as to practicing leaders, politicians and executives.

From one Conservative reader to another.......2007-02-04
While you comment on how laughingly biased Ms. Jeffrey's book is, you too are exhibiting the same laughable level of bias in your review.
I am a Conservative and while I agree that there are passages demonstrating the author's inclination to the left (which is to be expected, to be honest, after reading the opening pages in which she says she ran in an Okanagan election as a Liberal) I feel that she very accurately and aptly conveys the reaction of a whole country to the various Conservative leaders the world has had to deal with over time - the vast majority of whom have not stuck to their platforms at all but thrown such nonsense as the "Common Sense Revolution" was in our faces. She even proves this in her opening pages by quoting the disgruntled taxi driver who voted for the Mike Harris-headed party only to be disillusioned by what they actually delivered.
I think if you want to comment on someone's close-mindedness, you need to make sure you, yourself, do not have a closed mind first.
Brooke Jeffrey seems bitter that her side is losing........2000-09-06
Although this book provides some insight on the electoral strategies of Mike Harris and Ralph Klein, the book is full of lies and conjecture about conservatives.
Case in point: the author acknowledges that Mike Harris' policies were based on a platform which he got elected but goes on to say "for many Ontarians the immediate shock was how ruthlessly the Harris team set about implementing their promises" (p. 195). What is so beautiful about this passage is that Mike Harris was re-elected with the same number of votes in the same year that this book came out, thus refuting her claim.
Another interesting passage: "As for the Reform Party, the pictures of male-dominated party gatherings tell the tale. At the elected level, the number of women in the Official Opposition's caucus actually declined, from 7 in 1993 to 4 in 1997." (p. 389). What the author BLATANTLY fails to mention is that the Bloc Quebecois (a separatist party whose mandate is to break up Canada) was in power was in power in 1993 and Reform (now Canadian Alliance) replaced them in 1997. I guess what the author is saying here is that it is better to have Separatists as Official Opposition than a moderately right-of-centre party because they have more women in their caucus. And a year after the publication of the book, MP Deborah Grey became the interim House Opposition leader when Preston Manning stepped down thus refuting her claim again.
This book is so laughingly biased, it is hardly credible. I could write a rebuttal that would actually cite sources instead of making false statements without citing them. (To her credit, the author cites sources in a separate chapter, but most of her sources are from left-wing editorials in MacLean's and the Toronto Star).
By the way, I received this book as a gift from my girl friend, and I am reading it to be respectful. Had she known about the slant from which this book was written, she would not have bought it. But it is an interesting read if you want some insight of the mindset of the Far Left.

Book Description
Putting the Children First chronicles the educational struggle that took place in the city of Newark amidst years of political upheaval and economic neglect. It is a story of inspiration and hope as we come to understand what happened when educators, parents, and community members pulled together to turn education around in one of the most historically troubled cities in America.
This volume tells the remarkable story of Project New Beginnings, a 7-year collaboration between the Newark Public Schools and Bank Street College to restructure early childhood education. Reporting from the front lines of urban schools, this important volume: * Gives voice to the variety of people involved in effective school reform--teachers, principals, staff developers, superintendents, and foundation executives. * Illustrates how one school-change project kept its focus on the needs of individual teachers and classrooms while negotiating the many demands in contemporary urban schools. * Confronts the difficult constraints and many hurdles the Project overcame to emerge as a model for school-university collaboration.

Customer Reviews:
Rehash of Commonly Available Information.......2003-10-20
~Based on the title of this book, I expected to learn something surprising or "ingenious" about controlling ants. Instead, I found an introduction to ants with little style, and techniques of control that are easily (and more cheaply) found in articles on the web or in magazines -- techniques such as keeping your kitchen counters free of food, buying ant baits at the store, and hiring a professional when the invasion gets bad.
The book notes that it's important to know the species of ants~~ in order to control them, but it fails to provide sufficient detail about each species to determine what type are in your home. The book also fails to distinguish between species in its recommendations for control.
The text is scant and padded with similarly high-level (and thus not terribly useful) information about other pest insects.~

Book Description
The classical restricted three-body problem is of fundamental importance because of its applications in astronomy and space navigation, and also as a simple model of a non-integrable Hamiltonian dynamical system. A central role is played by periodic orbits, of which many have been computed numerically. This is the second volume of an attempt to explain and organize the material through a systematic study of generating families, the limits of families of periodic orbits when the mass ratio of the two main bodies becomes vanishingly small. We use quantitative analysis in the vicinity of bifurcations of types 1 and 2. In most cases the junctions between branches can now be determined. A first-order approximation of families of periodic orbits in the vicinity of a bifurcation is also obtained. This book is intended for scientists and students interested in the restricted problem, in its applications to astronomy and space research, and in the theory of dynamical systems.

Book Description
The classical three-body problem is of great importance for its applications to astronomy and space navigation, and also as a simple model of a non-integrable Hamiltonian dynamical system. A central role is played by periodic orbits, of which a large number have been computed numerically. Here the author explains and organizes this material through a systematic study of generating families, which are the limits of families of periodic orbits when the mass ratio of the two main bodies becomes vanishingly small. The most critical part is the study of bifurcations. Many cases are distinguished and studied separately and detailed recipies are given. Their use is illustrated by determining generating families, and comparing them with numerical computations for the Earth+Moon and Sun-Jupiter systems.
