            Book Description

Pastoralism has an ancient heritage in the vast natural pastures of Central Asia. These pastoral systems were profoundly altered after the incorporation of Kazakstan and Turkmenistan into the Soviet Union. Pastoralists were collectivized into state farms, building an industrialized nomadism, which was highly productive while preserving elements of the pastoral systems. Independence from the Soviet Union then brought new policies, which reorganized the state farms and removed state support in what has been termed the 'second revolution'.
This collection traces how pastoralists have coped with the challenge of change in a part of the world with a long-tradition of livestock keeping. Their precarious position-balanced between a market system where only the fittest may survive, and their attempt to remain a human resource for the future development of the natural pastures and livestock industry-is carefully and critically examined by the contributors. The pastoralists' unique skill at managing livestock in a variable and challenging environment, and their ability to supply commodities much in demand mean that an understanding of their societal position is essential for anyone interested in transition in the former Soviet Union.

            4 out of 5 stars Author's review.......2004-02-02

Dismantling the Soviet Union had rarely-examined effects on remote rural families. This book documents the impacts of transition on pastoralists, through multidisciplinary field studies at several sites between 1998-2000. Topics include: Asian agrarian reform, vegetation dynamics, livestock nutrition, grazing patterns, marketing and pastoral income, land degradation, institutions for managing pasture and livestock. The fourteen authors include five Central Asian scientists, and range from social anthropologists, animal scientists, economists, pasture agronomists and climate ecologists. The book will be of interest to researchers on range and livestock in semi-arid areas and to policy analysts of transition in the rural areas of the former Soviet Union.

                Book Description

Dust is widespread in the galaxy. To astronomers studying stars it may be just an irritating fog, but it is becoming widely recognized that cosmic dust plays an active role in astrochemistry. Without dust, the galaxy would have evolved differently, and planetary systems like ours would not have occurred. To explore and consolidate this active area of research, Dust and Chemistry in Astronomy covers the role of dust in the formation of molecules in the interstellar medium, with the exception of dust in the solar system. Each chapter provides thorough coverage of our understanding of interstellar dust, particularly its interaction with interstellar gas. Aimed at postgraduate researchers, the book also serves as a thorough review of this significant area of astrophysics for practicing astronomers and graduate students.

                  Book Description

Studies of stellar formation in galaxies have a profound impact on our understanding of the present and the early universe. The book describes complex physical processes involved in the creation of stars and during their young lives. It illustrates how these processes reveal themselves from radio wavelengths to high energy X-rays and gamma -rays, with special reference towards high energy signatures. Several sections devoted to key analysis techniques demonstrate how modern research in this field is pursued.

                    5 out of 5 stars Space dust.......2000-03-29

This is one of the most useful books I have ever bought. This graduate level text explains everything you could ever want to know about dust in space in language that is easy to follow and using simplified mathematic situations. From the archaic conventions of observational astronomy to understanding how solid particles interact with light waves, to how particles form, in what environments we can observe them and how, this book provides a great introduction to the subject as a whole and offers suggested further reading. I would recommend this book to any graduate level scientist who wants to learn about space dust

                      Book Description

The book is designed as an astrophysics textbook that provides a comprehensive introduction to the physics of Interstellar Matter. It is aimed primarily at those undertaking postgraduate courses, or those doing advanced projects as part of honors undergraduate courses in physics or astrophysics. It should also provide a handy reference to the field for astrophysics faculty and other researchers who are not necessarily experts in this particular subdiscipline. The objective of Astrophysics of the Diffuse Universe is to show how physics can be applied to the understanding and diagnosis of the phase structure, the physical conditions, and the chemical make-up and evolution of the interstellar medium. Consistent with the authors' lecture and course experience, here a systematic approach has been adopted to assist the development of the reader's insight into the physics underlying the subject.

                      3 out of 5 stars A good supplemental read.......2005-12-26

Another reviewer pointed out the shear amount of typos in this text book, so that remains relevant. I also echo the lack of pedagogical effectiveness, for which I do not necessarily blame the authors --- when is the last time you actually have encountered a pedagogically effective textbook? Although the discussions of physical concepts are probably not as deep or helpful as other textbooks considered to be of more pedagogical nature, what I find valuable in this textbook is the up-to-date reference and the connections made between the various astrophysical phenomena that might escape attention when being bogged down into the details of interpreting what physics says about a particular ISM question. As a student I used Spitzer and Osterbrock and found them to be pedagogically more effective, but when I picked up this textbook, I was also pleased about seeing how things that I learned from the other texts fit into a larger, more up-to-date astrophysical context. For that I think the book deserves a spot as a reference in any graduate level ISM course.

1 out of 5 stars Another terrible book, like Osterbrock.......2004-05-16

This is another of the books I had to use for my graduate ISM course. I dont know what the problem is, but every book Ive read on the ISM was terrible at explaining things (because confusion in this subject is very easy), and none of them have an INDEX thats worth a crap. So dont expect to be able to do the homework problems in there.

Dopita is written a little better than Osterbrock, and there isnt the ridiculous amount of tables strewn within the text, but its not MUCH better.

3 out of 5 stars Topical, but lots of typos.......2003-11-05

I used this as my textbook when teaching a graduate course on the interstellar medium. It has good explanations of a lot of current material, and includes some very detailed derivations for the advanced or interested reader. However, a lot of the basics are glossed over or not clearly explained - this book really needs to go hand in hand with Spitzer's "Physical Processes in the Interstellar Medium" to provide a complete picture. In any case, the big problem with this book is the ridiculous number of errors and typos (I and my students found over 100). This would just be annoying if all these errors were minor things like spelling mistakes. However, many of the errors are catastrophic, e.g. explaining spectroscopic notation but getting the labels all wrong, errors in the derivation of atomic levels, a calculation of cooling timescales which is wrong by a factor of 10^5, etc etc. This proved a very frustrating experience for me and for my students. Unless a second edition comes out with all these mistakes corrected, next time I will likely use this book for reference, but not recommend it to the students, so as to spare them this pain.

                          Book Description

Solid particles are followed from their creation through their evolution in the Galaxy to their participation in the formation of solar systems like our own, these being now clearly deduced from observations by the Hubble Space Telescope as well as by IR and visual observations of protostellar disks, like that of the famous Beta Pictoris object. The most recent observational, laboratory and theoretical methods are examined in detail. In our own solar system, studies of meteorites, comets and comet dust reveal many features that follow directly from the interstellar dust from which they formed. The properties of interstellar dust provide possible keys to its origin in comets and asteroids and its ultimate origin in the early solar system. But this is a continuing story: what happens to the solid particles in space after they emerge from stellar sources has important scientific consequences since it ultimately bears on our own origins - the origins of solar systems and, especially, of our own earth and life in the universe.
