Book Description
An Insightful Model for Understanding Industry Change
From Xerox to K-Mart to Sotheby's, great companies have failed to translate extraordinary innovation into better profitability. Why does this happen?
Anita M. McGahan argues that great companies fail to profit from investments in innovation when they break their industries' rules for how change can take hold. In this book, she shows how to develop a strategy that is aligned with the rules of industry change. By understanding and operating within the rules, executives can better appreciate the tradeoffs that are unique to each company's evolutionary path-and consequently improve performance by making smarter, more profitable strategic bets.
How Industries Evolve is based on extensive statistical studies of 700 global industries and more than twenty-five case studies. McGahan identifies four models of industry evolution-progressive, creative, radical, and intermediating-and shows how a company can diagnose which model most closely describes the trajectory of change in its industry. The book then explains how company strategists can use their understanding of this model to carefully coordinate choices about R&D, alliances, internal venturing, leadership style, compensation, modularization, and time-to-market.
By supporting executives' efforts to recognize and respond to shifts in industry structure, this book will ultimately help companies to achieve and sustain superior performance.
Customer Reviews:
Understand the Status Quo - then Blow it up!.......2006-04-03
One of the first steps I take in analyzing a company is to timeline its' industry. McGahan offers up a detailed model of the various stages and life cycles of industries. Within How Industries Evolve, McGahan identifies four models of industry evolution; progressive, creative, radical, and intermediating.
My recommendation is to read this in conjunction with Blue Ocean Strategy. Some of the concepts mesh well in that you are either leading or following at any point in time. It's also true that you must either create sustaining innovation or reposition yourself by expanding into new territory.
Seven chapters create the core of How Industries Evolve:
1) Introduction and overview
2) The four trajectories of industry evolution
3) How change unfolds on each trajectory
4) Assessing the nature and stage of evolution in an individual industry
5) Conforming to the rules of change within an industry
6) Creating a business-unit strategy that exploits the opportunities in industry evolution
7) Diversifying across businesses to capitalize on industry evolution
No matter what your business, your success depends largely in part to overall industry dynamics. More importantly, understanding how other industry players think will go a long way towards achieving a distinctive competitive advantage - and keeping it.

"Business Success through Innovation"
Academic but worth it.......2005-09-27
This book was written by a b-school professor based on many years of research. The framework takes a little while to absorb. We read and reread the book several times. Once we "got it," though, this really made a big difference in helping us understand how our business threatened larger firms. We made much better pricing decisions after reading it.
Even radical change takes a long time.......2005-09-27
The best aspect of this book is that it offers a detailed model for the stages of radical and intermediating change. It deals with the emergence, convergence, co-existence and eventual dominance of one industry over another. The book explains that each of these stages may take a long time on the order of decades. This provided us with a very helpful way of thinking about what is happening in our business.
Excellent framework.......2005-09-21
While the framework is nicely structured, I was not able to get a good picture of how to implement the idea. As a startup's founder, I find the book of little help - maybe for established incumbents it would be different.
Interesting Thoughts on how Industries Evolve and Making it Work.......2005-06-23
Prof. McGahan (BC and HBS) has written an interesting book on how industries evolve and how a business executive can identify those trends and make $ out of it.
These are the key insights from the book,
1. 4 types of industry evolution patterns - Progressive (retail), Creative (pharma), Radical (fedex) and Intermediating (financial brokers).
2. These rules can be applied across core assets or core activities.
3. Two categories of phases of changes - [Fragementation, shakeout, maturity, declining]or [Emergence, Convergenc, Co-Existence and Dominance]
4. Her prescriptive approach to apply it to the industry,
- Identify what is your industry
- Determine Evolutionary Trajectory
- Determine nature of change - architectural/foundational
- Determine phase of change
- Apply principles of competition for each type
5. 2 kinds of tradeoffs - Leading vs. Following, Repositioning vs. Sustaining.
As you can well see these perspectives are not driven from lot of data and hard stats but more conjectures and hypothesis that are not well proven. I am not sure using this approach will help you make $ of money of these trends but it can get you tenureship at the local university.

VERY HELPFUL BUT NOTHING NEW.......2007-01-04
A good all purpose book, very useful but nothing new to an experienced reader.
Ed is the man.......2006-05-25
I have been useing Ed's books for years. I follow his column in heads magazine and Cannabis Culture magazine. He knows what he is talking about. This book is the ultimate handbook. It tells you everything you need to know to get a garden started. I think this book is very easy to follow and is a great buy. Theinformation is priceless. I trust Ed and this book.
One of the better ones.......2005-04-07
I read 90% of this book front to back when I first recieved it. It could have been organized better, and yes it did seem to jump around a bit, but it had some quality information that are the building blocks for the best techniques available.
great handbook.......2005-01-11
This is a great starter book for any grower. I still refer to this book many times. The information is great and useful. A book for people who are starting to grow.
Good Presentation - Fair coverage of marijuana topics.......2003-06-05
This is an okay reference book. I found this book easier to navigate than Indoor marijuana Horticulture by Jorge Cervantes which is packed with information but not well presented. Between both of these guides I was able to improve on my cultivation techniques but there are gaps still not covered by both works. If you find yourself in this kind of a situation then I recommend that you look for normal botany books on growing. I have a collection of other readings which helped. You might have to go down that route too.
Well worth the read but you will need much more than just these two books.

good but needs more photo's.......2007-09-02
The book has a lot of good info, but the author did'nt have to many color photos to follow along with and they keep you hopeing that yours will be just like that, he has some drawings of various grow situations and machines ,, It does cover from the experienced to the begginer it does go good with the other one Jorge 's Horticulture book, between the two you should at least have a better than average start...Peace, Sugo
Execelent.......2007-08-21
Impresses this neophyte. Seams almost complete (but, not quite see other ref.). A one reference source. Almost can't go wrong. So, buy it!
Brilliant, charming, breathtaking, and timeless!.......2004-08-12
For anyone who has ever tried to grow this precious herb, you know how difficult it can be. With this magnificent how-to guide, I have had no difficulty in growing bountiful harvests. A special section toward the end of the book describes the best place to get seeds and how to smuggle them in. Best of all, the entire book is printed on hemp. Thank you for this treasure trove of marijuana maintenance magic!
this is the book that puts the info together .......2004-07-27

Read this Book: You'll be able to grow ANYTHING.......2007-03-17
My brother, a botanist at a large research institution, gave me Mel Frank's book for my birthday. We call it The Bible. It is the first book and still the best book on the subject. It is clear, the pictures are great, follow the directions and you'll grow whatever you want. So far the weed is flourishing, nothing has exploded or turned to toxic sludge. Its way easier than cooking.
Blacksquirrel45 (Kalamazoo, MI.).......2005-06-05
This is one of the finest books I've read on the subject of Cannabis growing. It may be a bit outdated, but man has been cultivating cannabis for 8,000 years, and it's still grown the same way, only with a little technology applied. I've been reading this book & "Marijuana Grower's Insiders's Guide" also by Mel Franks, and between the two books, you won't a more knowledgeble person on the subject of Cannabis growing.
Surprised to see this one still here.........2003-12-22
My uncle used to keep this old grow book in his drawer. This is the oldest of the modern grow guides if my memory serves me correct. I have read a few editions of this since. Not a bad grow manual but a little bit on the old side now.
EXCELLENT.......2002-04-01
The book is an excellent read for anyone who smokes marijuana, whether or not you're interested in growing it. The first two chapters provides an excellent history or Cannabis Sativa as well as a detailed account of the U.S. Government's attempts to undermine the drug. The rest of the book provides simple yet scientifically accurate information that is crucial for anyone looking to grow pot.
It is an excellent book.
This book has been left behind........2002-03-29
I have a very old copy of Mel Frank's "The Indoor Outdoor Highest Quality Marijuana Grower's Guide" which is out of print now - so that goes to show how long I have been following this man's work. Back in the 1970's he completed that little pamphlet sized book which basically discussed methods of growing cannabis. It had a few black and white photographs and some back pages explaining light dispersal patterns and strengths. The inaccuracies of that first book can be seen by comparing it to this volume of work. This pattern is found in all of Mel Frank's work and if you compare any of these old books to any new good grow book then you will understand why.
Mel Frank's contribution to the cannabis literature world is good but fails to grasp what a grow book should be about. Basically this book describes what cannabis is, where it can grow and how it grows. Unfortunately it does actually explain in detail how it is done but simply dictates the cannabis cycle both indoors and outdoors by talking about the different stages of growth in each environment. This is done by addressing cannabis in a series of chapters which briefly cover history, species type, techniques, harvesting, curing and smoking.
This book is not a grow book which is a common misconception about it. It is an overview of cannabis from the perspective of Mel's experiences with the plant and what he has learned through studying the plant and it`s life cycle. The chapters are not as deep as one would like them to be (expect chapters that only last a couple of pages on a vast topic such as species type, cloning, making seeds).
The idea behind this kind of book is that it should back up it's concepts and views with references to actual experiments and garden designs. You will not find them here in this book. If you are looking for a full analysis of the cannabis plant and gardening designs (which is extremely important if you want to learn about HID light systems, hydroponics etc. ) then you should try out books like - "The Cannabis Grow Bible: The definitive guide to growing marijuana for recreational and medial use" by Greg Green or "Indoor Marijuana Horticulture - The Indoor Bible" by Jorge Cervantes. As many of the other reviewers have correctly pointed out - this book is old and even the revised edition is old. So do not expect to find any of the new growing methods (or new equipment!) in this book. Times have changed and this book has not. Can anyone here say that they would use a grow guide that is over a quarter of a century old to conduct a growing project? Many have done so but no one in the 21st century would consider it. The reality is that there are many new and better books on the market.
For example, the problem with Mel Frank's work is that there is an extremely limited botanical foundation to his work. Some of the concepts like force flowering are now void and replaced by a more correct approach to calyx development. The nutrient advice is not as solid as it is today and cloning techniques are very different. Where and how to get seeds is not covered. Also it fails to hit home with extremely important points like - obtaining good genetics is a primer to getting good yields! People will not be impressed with bag seed by any means. There are so many important areas not covered in this book and they are extremely important to know about.
Do not let this review put you off buying this book though. We all have it because it is an oldie. My advice is to get something new as well so that you can keep up with the times and produce better results. Also you can compare this book with the new ones and see the difference for yourself.
Customer Reviews:
No, really, THIS is the best book.......2007-03-17
"Oldtimer" needs to chill. I am an actual adult, (41 years old, voting in elections and payng taxes.) I have used this book for years, and own other books by Mel Frank; I was recently given a new book my Mel Frank, illustrated by Linda kallan. Mel Frank works for me. He is clear and concise, he is the first word on the subject and is liberally quoted (and ripped off) in almost every other book on marijuana growing. I recommend Mel Frank to anyone interrested in the indoor growng of just about anything. My brother agrees.
Read the date carefully - 1989........2001-07-30
This is 2001. What you get is a book that is not up to date on cannabis growing techniques and procedures. So make sure that you know this before you buy this book. But it gets worse......let me think back to 1990 when I got this book. I can tell you that it was not even up to date back then. This is a PROBLEM will Mel Frank's books. They are old and dated and not followed up on. Because cannabis growing was somewhat new to these people and because of laws banning cannabis production in the U.S, you can guess that these guys did not have a lot of information to play around with. What you get is the best that they could offer at the time, but unfortunately I would really have to invite you to consider the fact that this writer is just a writer and not a good grower. That is probably the reality of the situation too. Maybe he does a great deal of research or maybe he has tried to do his best, but his words do not work out in practice. This book, much like his other works, contains information that is not correct, not factual and will not help you grow a good plant. What you will get is some very basic information on growing that will cause you to make mistakes. Learning comes through experience but at the same time when people try to sell you information like this, they should at least try to get the basics right. They have not done this and even worse, the book's growing advice is not good.
If you ask the cannabis growing community about writers like Mel Frank they will tell you that they got the book, read it, tried it and then went to seek help from someone who knew what to do. This has been the backbone for major complaints that the growing community has had about this book. That it seems to have been written by somebody who does not grow, or does not grow well and that is the bottom line about this book.
When you read reviews from people who are praising this book and other Mel Frank books you might consider the fact that they have never actually applied his words to practice or have seen what proper well produced cannabis plants look like in reality. Mel Frank is very popular among 16 year olds who show this book to their friends, and really that is the books market. It is for teenagers who like to read books about pot. If you want to learn how to grow cannabis and are serious about growing a nice plant or two in your garden or indoors, then find something else other than this book. This book will not give you a proper grounding in basic cannabis growing.
A complete, concise guide for everything you need to know........1999-03-25
I had never grown before. I borrowed this book from a friend that highly recommended it. He was not wrong this book leads you through every step of the process. It covers indoor and outdoor growing along with all methods used to produce a crop. It starts by telling you how to select your seeds which was some much needed insight! This enabled me to produce a higher percentage of females. I am an outdoor grower yet it has all the information to set up light, irrigation, and care taking system for indoor growing and hydro. It gives you suggestions on what types of lights to use and how to arrange them (large or small operation). Soil mixes are also discussed and how to aquire the needed ingredients. The book provides practically a step-by-step approach to maintaining your crop. From the germination to harvest stages. I am now on my third year of bountiful crop production all because of this book. Mel Frank has really outdone himself on this one!
Concise, thorough, full of good information. Get it!.......1997-07-26
This book is the preferred title for anyone, novice or expert, growing indoors. Well written, detailed, and from an unimpeachable source. This book contains all the info. you might need to successfully bring C. Sativa to healthy maturity. Highly recommended

Wow!This book Is possibly one of the best around on Marijuana cultivation!I found it wonderful in its use of detailed sections including everything a closet homegrower or garden grower would need: lighting, soil, seed strain, plant cycle etc... Although I read it for *informative* reasons only (he he) I definetly want to go out and start growing my own.Written with Ed's lyrical way, it provides an enjoyable read on its own or is perfect for first time growers or professionals. This book is Extremly desireable!
