Book Description
Spread trading is an integral part of the commodity futures marketplace, yet relatively little has been written about spreads. There are more fingers on one hand than books about spreads.
Most books present little more than a cursory look at spread analysis. This book concentrates on the analysis of spreads and spread price action. Spread analysis is aimed at the discovery and execution of profitable spread trades. The seasonal spread texts are simply one of the tools the spread analyst uses. Before this book, futures periodicals have provided most of the published material about spreads.
This book is like having an experienced spread trader mentor take you through his experiences and getting immediate answers. It is like attending a spread seminar headed by experts. It really provides answers.
Courtney provides basic spread analysis techniques which stimulate readers to do their own research. Another goal of this book is to increase interest in spreads and provide the marketplace of ideas with a larger supply of spread trading analysts.
Mr. Smith's techniques will not make you a millionaire overnight. It didn't do it for him. On the other hand, these techniques have provided significant profits when most traders were taking losses. Each reader of this book will acquire something different from it. Some traders will be attracted to the technical analysis, while others will prefer the fundamental and statistical analysis.
The key to the successful use of this book lies in trying the methods outlined. Only through experience can traders understand what is being said. After reading this book, traders will must find the method they feel is the most profitable and best fits their perspective on the market, the one they feel most comfortable with.
Customer Reviews:
Well worth it!.......2005-11-08
This book is great for the beginner who knows nothing at all about spreads but who desires to learn and also for the intermediate trader who wants a greater depth of knowledge. The information is quite comprehensive, and presented in language that is very readable. This book help me get an understanding of the fundamentals behind markets. It belongs in the library of every trader.
Spread textbook.......2001-11-07
Courtney Smith's textbook is specifically and comprehensive about spreads.
His whole book is about spreads and nothing but spreads. Probably the most useful Spread book from the fundamental perspective.
He has a lot to teach there is a lot to learn. It is the kind of book you'll keep in your spread-trading library. But will not by itself excite you to get up and trade.
It is comprehensive in that it stays on the subject like a dog with a bone, unlike Schwager's books that are all over the futures game.
He has a lot of experience and is well known in the field of spreads. This book is in my top ten Spread Traders library.
Book Description
Focusing on price-forecasting in the commodity futures market, this is the most comprehensive examination of fundamental and technical analysis available. Treats both approaches in depth, with forecasting examined in conjunction with practical trading considerations.
Customer Reviews:
A "must-read" for any investor.......2007-10-02
Schwagers book is captivating and informative. The discussion on regression provides useful insight for people interested in fundamental and technical analysis but may offend random walkers. Overall the book will enhance any readers understanding of the stockmarkets.
Classic, encyclopedic in scope........2004-07-02
Schwager is the starting point for any serious reading on futures and options trading. Disregard comments below on its being to quantitative. No, you don't need a Ph.D. in math nor high school calculus (there isn't a single integral or differential equation in the whole book). You should have a starting basis in statistics as well as some pre-existing intuition about markets.
It is well-written and clear, and truly encyclopedic in scope : every conceivable options trade, with all permutations thereof, is discussed and dissected, even inadvisable ones (they too are informative). A classic book whose age (mine is copyright 1984!) testifies to its enduring worth. To summarize, you can't really trade futures or options and expect to make money without it.
Futures Textbook.......2001-11-07
Schwager's textbooks while not specifically about spreads are comprehensive and complete about futures. This book has a small section about trading commodity futures spreads.
A good reference for traders who like Math/Stat.......2001-08-07
This book could be renamed as "The Mathematics of Trading". The traget readers are traders who use lots of Mathematics and Statistics.
The experience of Schwager helped me a lot. He said he was good in analysis but not trading. Many people, including me, thought Mathematics, Statistics and Economics were essential for good trading. So they went to college, studied hard, got a degree and hope they could make money in the market. This simply never happen! Otherwise everyone should got a PhD before trading. You still need to develop a method or system. But what is vital is to control your ego. Admit mistakes quickly. This was the most interesting and useful conclusion that I got from Schwager.
Schwager covers a whole lot of material.......1999-12-10
Very comprehensive book. Much if it is difficult to understand. Excellent writing, the clearest in the business, but author gets into some complex info. I feel he is not always fair in giving credit to other authors.
One side issue, a book this costly and technical should have a durable binding. Mine fell apart the first time I opened it. It's glued together like a paperback novel.
All in all it's the most complete single source I have seen in the commodities trading field, even includes chapters on economic theory. It's worth the price. Info on fallacies in fundamental analysis (reading the news) is unique and helpful. Also lots of very wise trading tips
Book Description
Spread trading, a low-risk, high-profit technique, involves buying a contract in one market while selling a different contract in another market to profit from the imbalance between those markets. The Complete Guide to Spread Trading covers the step-by-step mechanics for successfully executing more than 25 calendar, intermarket, interest rate, volatility, and stock index spreads. It explains both basic and advanced spread techniques and strategies, revealing market situations where spreads are most appropriate as well as clarifying what it means to buy or sell a spread, and more.

Spreads for Arithmetic lovers........2006-01-06
My name is -oo0(GoldTrader)0oo- Amazon will not let me hook up this post with my other lists. So when you do a search add this one to those. Amazon sucks!!
Complete Guide to Spread Trading by Keith Schap
ISBN: 0071448446
The greatest American chess champion still alive once wrote a book on how to play chess. After explaining the game, he simply teaches you how to kill. Similarly Ross's Spreads & Seasonals teaches the game simply, and dives straight to the heart of how you can place your first winning seasonal spread trade.
Mr. Schaps textbook is much more complex. It is written for the already active trader, who may want to switch to or try new spreads. Advanced traders, practicing spread traders, mathematicians, and employees of hedge funds and financial firms, will find this book useful. As a result it covers everything, and updates the older spread books into this century. Mr. Schaps works for the CBOT. He does not see a conflict of interest is suggesting that traders rely on brokers for research, I do.
The author explains spreads from the left hemisphere of the brain. Anything that can simply be shown to both sides of the brain in a picture, graph or chart, is instead reduced to a complicated array of digital formulas and intricate equations.
"Spreads ... produce better results than outright trades in futures or stocks."
General principles as well as advanced ideas in the various ways to spread are taught. You do not have to read it straight through, but you can move to the areas that address your current interests. Besides futures, he goes on to cover Option spreads.
"Spreads trade around long term means ... they work back towards the mean."
Instead of using the normal spread charts, where all a trader has to seek is the spread differential to go up. Schaps takes it two levels deeper with exhibits of columns of numbers, formulas, and statistics. If you don't use arithmetic every day, run far, far away from this book and its complicated mathematical explanations of otherwise simple concepts.
"It is a good idea to focus on the spread as a whole, not on the individual legs of the spread."
In normal spread teaching, the long contract is stated first the short second. Schap because he is using rows of numbers, has to remind you what is widening and what is narrowing for each type of commodity. You buy the widening or sell the narrowing. Any mix up as to what widening means and you can find yourself on the opposite side of the spread.
"A valid spread must have a structure that ties it to the economic reality you are trying to capture."
While other writers may use simple charts showing the historical tendency. Schap examples show a much shorter period of only one or two years. Where Schap does use charts, he shows two lines instead of one. Usually he uses exhibits with columns of numbers, as an alternative to charts.
"Price has no history. Only spreads have history."
Spreads carry messages about how the market needs to draw supplies into and out of storage. "The price differentials of the spreads help the markets to regulate the flow of goods into and out of storage." A carry (contango) market (price plus storage), wants product to go into storage. An inverted (backwardation) market (penalizes storage), wants product moved out of storage.
Schaps dispenses with the confusing terms of inter and intra delivery, but uses terms like "cointegration," and "yield curve shift."
A "Normal yield curve shows a healthy economy, inverted curve, near yield higher than far yield shows slower growth. How it is changing widening or narrowing is the question. When it is widening suggests increasing demand for credit. When the yield curve is narrowing, suggests that the fed is cutting back on the amount of credit it is creating relative to the demand for credit."
Because spreads isolate the effect of change in the width of the yield curve spread. Yield spreads carry information in advance.
Unlike many spread books that may suggest vague trade dates, for spreads. Schaps has an overview and advanced concepts of spread groups for traders to refer to before making a spread trade in a new commodity. He takes you to deeper layers with the widening, & narrowing. Deeper still the effect it has on storage.
Many spread books have been criticized for using optimized trade dates. Schaps often uses unoptimized exchange expiration dates to exit many of his spreads examples.
Many books may have a chapter about spreads. Only a handful of books are about spread trading. Anyone who takes trading seriously would want to have access to all of the Spread Trading books in his personal library. One successful spread trade could buy the whole lot! In a case like that, Schaps book must be included. " The Complete Guide," is not for the beginner or uninitiated trader. As a preview to the experienced mathematician about to trade a new futures group "The Complete Guide to Spread Trading," by Keith Schap is indispensable..
Hard to understand, difficult to read.......2005-09-30
I have been trading futures for about 3 years, and wanting to learn more about spread trading. This book is very dry reading, and difficult for a beginner to go through. No color graphs. Just boring tables with numbers, and many words. Not an easy book for a visual learner. Seasonality is hinted upon, but no good charts provided, and he does not really tell you when to do what, or what triggers or conditions to look for to enter a position. His section on spread options trading is perhaps easier to grasp, and I did learn a bit from that. A more advanced trader might perhaps glean more from this book than I did, but I do not recommend it for the beginner.
A BIT SUSPICIOUS!!!..........2005-09-19
I have yet to read this book, however, so far the ***** average rating is quite suspicious... Each one of the three *****-reviewers, does not have a single other review in their profile. I am at the stage where I am trying to learn as much as possible about spreads' trading, so I would greatly appreciate if someone who actually has real-life experience trading futures spreads and who has also read this book, to do everyone of the rest of us a favor, and post an honest review - please, we need a counterbalance to the nonsense posted by those who are most likely associated w/ the author or his publisher...
Another Winner From Schap.......2005-09-02
The best book I have seen on spread trading. Many successful commodity traders trade spreads - and why not - spreads provide profit opportunities, typically with lower risk than trading outrights. Schap has written an informative book that will teach spread trading basics to beginners and probably teach the veterans a few new tricks. Also, you will have a few laughs in the process.
Good reference book on spread trading.......2005-08-19
It covers almost everything about spread trading. Although some of the spreads referred in this book are not good trades any more, they give excellent inspirations.

Product Description
Animals, Vegetables And Minerals - From A To Z links an animal and a nutritional concept in the form of a four line verse to each letter of the alphabet. The humorous alliterative verses enhanced by the colorful witty illustrations make learning about a healthy life style fun for kids and delightful for parents to read to them. In view of the national concern about childhood obesity this book is not only educational but particularly timely.

Vitamins in Animal and Human Nutrition
ASIN: 0444513671 |
Book Description
This comprehensive textbook and reference manual presents concise, up-to-date information on mineral nutrition for livestock and poultry, as well as comparative aspects with laboratory animals and humans. Chapters are organized by established and most common minerals, and present information on each mineral's history, properties, distribution, and natural sources, as well as their requirements, metabolism, functions, deficiencies, supplementation methods, and toxicity for various animals. Those minerals for which naturally occurring deficiencies or excesses are known to be of economic importance are emphasized.
A unique feature of this book is the description of the practical implications of mineral deficiencies and excesses, and of the conditions that might result. A large number of classic photographs illustrate mineral deficiencies and toxicities in farm livestock, laboratory animals and humans. Furthermore, it places strong emphasis on mineral supplementation in each chapter, and devotes an entire chapter to this subject.

Book Description
The southern hemisphere is undergoing a phase of intense "activity". On one hand, a number of exciting new facilities (ranging from optical and near-infrared to radio and millimeter) are, or will soon be, available. On the other hand, many new deep surveys, covering most of the electromagnetic spectrum, are underway. This will provide large databases and make coordinated radio, infrared and optical projects in the southern hemisphere ever more attractive and significant. With all these new facilities, important progress will be made regarding large-scale structure of the universe, the very early universe and the associated first epoch of galaxy formation. This book presents a collection of papers presented by experts in these fields at a workshop designed to address how southern hemisphere astronomy could best coordinate its efforts to maximise the use of the new generation of 8-10 telescopes in studying the key questions in these fields. It is aimed at research astronomers.
