Book Description
Retirement brings with it the promises of leisure and freedom as well as the risks of boredom and isolation. When retirees rid their schedules of anything resembling the kinds of obligations that once had been imposed by work, they will experience a sometimes-uncomfortable absence of structure. In The Experience of Retirement, the distinguished sociologist Robert S. Weiss provides a detailed description of how some people plan their retirement, what life in retirement is like, and what makes for a fulfilling retirement. His engaging book can thus serve as a most useful guide. Weiss shows us both retirement's benefits and its possible costs, both the relief retirees can feel once free of work's stresses and constraints and the discomfort that can be caused by loss of the positive aspects of working life.
The book is based on extensive interviews with eighty-nine men and women before and after their retirement from middle-income careers. Weiss makes vivid their experiences by presenting, in their own words, their descriptions of leaving their careers, considering what to do with their time, confronting issues of income in retirement, dealingsometimeswith social isolation, and reorganizing their lives. The interviews reveal the way in which retirement affects marriages and other familial relationships. Weiss concludes by presenting advice about retirement based on the actual experiences of retirees. For anyone approaching the age of retirement or already retired and looking for a more satisfying post-career life, for personnel managers, health care professionals, and all those who provide services for the retired, The Experience of Retirement will be an illuminating guidebook to this phase of life.
Customer Reviews:
should have read it sooner............2006-03-09
excellent book on the experience of retirement.... i only wish i had read it before i took early retirment from college teaching.... makes me feel a lot saner reading the interviews in this book!
Need livelier experiences.......2006-03-02
As a career consultant and former academic, I am a great admirer of Robert Weiss. I continue to recommend Learning From Strangers to students who want to learn qualitative research. And I am of an age when retirement can be a realistic option for the current or near future.
So naturally I looked forward to this book, hoping for new insights and ideas.
Experience of Retirement is based on interviews with a sample of retired people in the Greater Boston area. As the author explains, most were chosen from middle class neighborhoods, although a few self-selected after reading about the study. The book itself comes from depth interviews with these retirees, divided into chapters based on typical retirement issues.
Perhaps the best part of the book comes in the Introductioon, where the author reflects on his own retirement. Unfortunately, the rest of the book seems as prosaic (and almost as dated) as the gold watch pictured on the front cover. Authors rarely get to choose their own cover art, so we have to ask why the publishers chose a stereotypical image for a book that questions retirement stereotypes.
Because the interviewees were chosen to be "typical" or "ordinary" middle class retirees, their stories are, well, typical. It's not realistic to generalize beyond this rather narrow sample and in any case, their insights just aren't that profound or novel. Retirees enjoy extended breakfast hours...well, okay, but so what?
The biggest gap of the book is the lack of reference to single, never-married retirees. Some interviewees have been divorced or widowed, but I don't recall references to bachelors. Some time ago I read research suggesting that single people actually fared better on their own because they had learned to enjoy their own company.
Other sections are simply too short to be useful. His relocation advice on pages 184-185 seems completely accurate and helpful (based on my own background as a relocation "expert"). Dependence on an automobile and separation from friends creates special challenges, often arising from a wish to move to a lower-cost, slower-paced small town.
But I'd like to go deeper. Volunteer work has a different kind of energy than paid work. Someone who misses the challenge and competition of working for pay needs to explore new worlds, such as working online.
Those who want to work face social pressures to look younger, and these pressures have financial impact. A woman could easily spend $100-$200 a month or more on hair, makeup and manicures. It's no longer enough to cover gray: now you're judged on highlights. And a sixty-something woman may be less than thrilled by what's considered the requisite fashion in shoes.
I wish Weiss had drawn on his superb sociological background to develop a sustained theoretical framework to explain retirement. Do retirees take on new roles in society? Are they a form of new social class -- a lower class, to be sure? A new culture? He could have referred to the seminal book Becoming an Ex, a sociological classic about leaving one role that formerly defined us.
But perhaps there are more basic difficulties with the whole notion of retirement. It's difficult to accept the retirement experience from the aging experience. And the greatest challenges of aging may be inherently sociological. The aging cohort clashes with the values and demands of the younger cohorts. We face an outdated social infrastructure, designed for a time when age fifty meant "old" and geographic boundaries made sense.

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A533903. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis investigates the wage and salary differentials experienced by military retirees in their post-service second career in the civilian labor market. The 1990 Census of Population and Housing, Public Use Microdata Samples was used as the source of data. Log earnings regression models were specified and estimated to determine earnings differences between military retirees and two comparison groups. The effects of the number of weeks and hours worked, education, location and receiving retirement income were controlled in the earnings regressions. The results indicate the proportion of military retirees not in the labor force is substantially higher than the proportion of non-veteran civilians or non-retired veterans not in the labor force. The data also reveals that retirees tend to work less weeks per year and hours per week. Finally, retirees earn on average $4,347 less annually than both comparison groups. Thus, military retirees not only tend to work less but when they do work they tend to take jobs that pay less. The present value of the earnings difference between a retiree and a non-retired veteran is approximately $48,534 (11.38 percent).
Book Description
I visited Cancun numerous times over the years, but could never learn much about the city its self, only the tourist strip. Because I thought Cancun such a beautiful place, it occurred to me that I would want to retire there someday. Therefore I needed to know the real Cancun, where the workers in the resorts lived, what the city was like.
Most of all I wanted to be able to find my own way around in an affordable manner. Since I did not like being at the mercy of cab drivers that determine what fare they charge by the colour of my skin and my nationality, I wanted to know how to use the buses to explore the city. I am not alone; fellow travelers have related repeatedly this same frustration at being at the mercy of cab drivers in the city. Their reaction was always to take the first bus they could get out of Cancun. Now they can stay.
I have compiled this guide to help visitors affordably explore the city, and learn for themselves just what makes Cancun so special and such an ideal place in which to retire.
Today we are facing declining petroleum supplies resulting in higher prices for heating fuels and gasoline. As a result, many of us are facing choices that we had not planned for in our retirement years. Do I eat or heat? The answer is found in Cancun and surrounding area. You can eat and you don't have to heat. In fact, paradise in your golden years can be yours.
In this book I show you how to know the city, and where to go for the help you need to move here. I've answered the questions I had about Cancun when visiting and when moving here. If you are like most visitors to Cancun and ask yourself if you could live here year round, the answer is yes, and this books makes it easy to realize such a dream.

Book Description
The significant store of knowledge about publicly regulated pensions for old age has grown even more rapidly in the past decade. This book explores current research in four critical areas for pension policy: the political design of pension institutions; the iron links among fiscal deficits, private savings, and pension reform; how macroeconomic policy should be conducted after large private pension funds have emerged; and lessons on efficient organization of the pension industry, drawn from international comparisons including Australia, Chile, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom.

Book Description
Anthropologist Steve Striffler begins this book in a poultry processing plant, drawing on his own experiences there as a worker. He also reports on the way chickens are raised today and how they are consumed. What he discovers about America’s favorite meat is not just unpleasant but a powerful indictment of our industrial food system. The process of bringing chicken to our dinner tables is unhealthy for all concerned—from farmer to factory worker to consumer.
The book traces the development of the poultry industry since the Second World War, analyzing the impact of such changes as the destruction of the family farm, the processing of chicken into nuggets and patties, and the changing makeup of the industrial labor force. The author describes the lives of immigrant workers and their reception in the small towns where they live. The conclusion is clear: there has to be a better way. Striffler proposes radical but practical change, a plan that promises more humane treatment of chickens, better food for the consumer, and fair payment for food workers and farmers.
Customer Reviews:
4 stars for Chicken.......2006-11-10
This book is a must read for anyone who eats Chickens. You should know what you are supporting and the dangers of the product.
A readable informative look at a little-analyzed subject.......2006-09-06
A harsh indictment of the aggressive tactics of the poultry giants, Striffler's work gives a grim view of the consequences for farmer, worker, and consumer. This book can be enjoy equally by activist, academician, and voracious reader all equally. Imminently readable, Striffler's work not only conveys a sense of the author's ideology but more importantly, backs up his concerns with hard and fast statistics.
Even for those who don't wish to endure a frontal assault on Tyson Foods and other major agribusiness corporations, the discussion on how American consumerism around chicken has changed over the last 20 years. For those who are old enough to remember a world without McNuggets, its an interesting cultural retrospective.
the best available book on workers and the meat processing industry.......2006-04-03
I bought and read Striffler's book to gain a better understanding of the largely immigrant-filled workforce in the meat processing industry. This book more than satisfied me. It serves not only to introduce you to the growth of the chicken industry, but also to describe insightfully immigrant workers' experiences, in any industry.
It is a very timely book given this year's focus on immigration reform. This industry will likely be more affected than any other if any major legislation is enacted.
grisly and hazardous work.......2006-01-25
Striffler gives an inquisitive peek at an industry that most people have little awareness of. Much of his book studies the workforce that mans the chicken abbatoirs. The prose shows a somewhat grisly job, that is also repetitive, mind-numbing and dangerous. The ever sharp knives and scalding liquids give rise to the inevitable workplace injuries.
Yet hope shines through in portions of the book. Many of the workers are Mexicans, who more or less legally migrate to these factories, which are often located in the American South. To the Mexicans, the work offers a good income that can support entire families back home.
A Must Read!.......2006-01-10
Wow! An academic who can write! This is a great book from beginning to end. Striffler actually worked in poultry processing plants and lived to tell about it -- and tell about it he does! He really provides an excellent, if critical, look at not only the industry, but how we raise, cook, eat....food in general. And he is a great writer. It really makes you think.
One other thing. I noticed one reviewer on Amazon was critical of Striffler for caring more about poultry workers than chickens. Uhh? I hope he cares more about people than birds! Is this a bad thing? I am an animal rights activist, and I wish there was more on this subject in the book, but that would be a very different book for a very different audience. This is just not a book about animal rights; it is much broader in perspective. But I found the book to be very informative, and even suggestive for those of us interested in animal rights....because Striffler provides the whole picture. The fact is that most people eat chicken, and will do so for some time -- so the question is how do we make the system better for everyone, including the birds. On this, Striffler is very critical of the industry; his analysis is superb and his ideas suggestive. Let's not lose perspective!

Book Description
In this book the processes of agricultural production and their management are described in terms of activity analysis, since this permits integration of theory with practical evaluations. Analytical tools developed in the book involve the construction of spreadsheet models, and readers are able to construct their own PC spreadsheets from the book's examples and case studies. Economic principles are presented that will assist in improving the design of agricultural processes and technologies, in guiding their appropriate combination in a business setting, and with the making of decisions through time and in recognition of noncertainty. Activity analysis models that allow the design and combination of agricultural activities to be optimized are also discussed. The book is aimed at advanced students of agricultural economics, business and management.

Book Description
Research is never free of pressures and constraints and to understand its results properly these have to be assessed and analyzed. In agriculture, research into biotechnology and GMOs as well as pesticides and herbicides is big business - agribusiness. This book looks at the crucial roles of funding and the political context on the research agenda and its results in agricultural development. It provides the first critical evaluation of the participatory methods now widely used, and explores the ways in which research into biotechnology have reflected the interests of the various parties involved.

The First Three Minutes: A Modern View of the Origin of the Universe
ASIN: 0521629721 |
Book Description
The evolution of our Universe and the formation of stars and galaxies are mysteries that have long puzzled scientists. Recent years have brought new scientific understanding of these profound and fundamental issues. In lively prose, Professor Padmanabhan paints a picture of contemporary cosmology for the general reader. Unlike other popular books on cosmology, After the First Three Minutes does not gloss over details, or shy away from explaining the underlying concepts. Instead, with a lucid and informal style, the author introduces all the relevant background and then carefully pieces together an engaging story of the evolution of our Universe. Padmanabhan leaves the reader with a state-of-the-art picture of scientists' current understanding in cosmology and a keen taste of the excitement of this fast-moving science. Throughout, no mathematics is used and all technical jargon is clearly introduced and reinforced in a handy glossary at the end of the book. For general readers who want to come to grips with what we really do and don't know about our Universe, this book provides an exciting and uncompromising read. Thanu Padmanabhan is a Professor at Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune, India. He is the recipient of numerous awards and author of three books, Structure Formation in the Universe (Cambridge, 1994), Cosmology and Astrophysics Through Problems (Cambridge, 1996), and, together with J.V. Narlikar, Gravity, Gauge Theories and Quantum Cosmology. He is also the author of more than one hundred popular science articles, a comic strip serial and several regular columns on astronomy, recreational mathematics, and the history of science.
Customer Reviews:
Challenging but Comprehensible.......2000-05-20
True teachers want their students to understand their subject. Padmanabhan is a true teacher and he has taken the trouble to carefully and simply explain so that the motivated reader can understand. If you are not a professional astronomer and you really want to understand astronomy, buy this book. But don't read it just once - read it again and again because each time you do, you will find your understanding of astronomy growing by leaps and bounds. When you do, you will catch a few minor flaws and typos but these are irrelevancies in what is a tremendous effort by a great teacher.
Good ideas; Needs editorial help.......2000-01-10
The book focuses on the evolution of large structures in the universe. Many other topics are included to supplement/support the general theme.
The biggest downfalls of the book are the writing and editing. It's hard to believe this is a Cambridge University Press book. There are editorial and typographical mistakes. The writing is often repetitive and, sometimes, disorganized, or at least inconcise. I think that with good editorial help, this book could have been shorter and clearer.
The figures are the strongest feature of the book. They appear to be very well thought out and are well executed.
I learned things from this book. I guess that's the bottom line.
Excellent Book, a must read........1999-09-23
When I began reading this book, I thought I made a mistake buying it. But as I read on, I began to realize this book was explaining things other books I have read take for granted. For example, I really appreciate the author explaining why the big bang predicts the primordial hydrogen and helium abundances. I have always known what they are, but until I read this book I not understand why. Thank you. Also, I loved the explanation of why the cold and hot dark matter models don't really fit the observed clumpiness of the present day universe. And there are more subjects treated in detail laymen can easily understand. I wish more authors would elaborate on these subjects with such detail and not just state them as fact. As an amatuer astronomer with an interest in cosmology, I thank the author for the detail in this book concerning particle physics and cosmology. I recommend this book for anyone looking for explanations of some aspects of the big bang theory. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is due to its few, seemingly unnecessary, elementary chapters. I wish the whole book was as good as it's strongest chapters.
Specifically targets origin of Large Structures.......1999-06-07
This book provides an excellent treatment of the formation of large structures (galaxies and clusters of galaxies). It includes discussion of all of the various theories on the origin if these structures and good descriptions of all of the methodologies for collecting information about the early universe.
It does not, however, contains any information about the formation of structure within galaxies, star formation or planet formation.
Masterwork for simplifying a complex topic.......1998-12-19
This book is all strengths. No failures. Manages to describe most of the physics relevant to cosmology with no mathematics. Explains how science works -- excellent interplay of observations, the models they stimulate and the reverse process, as the theorists suggest observations that would distinguish between alternate models. Book focuses on science, not on scientists. The latter (preoccupation with whimsical stories about colleagues) is one of the most annoying features of similar books. Those authors speak down to readers -- this book never speaks down, and never introduces gossip. Really, you couldn't do better if you want to learn the current status of thoughts on cosmology
