Book Description
Brenner examines whether the 21st Century will be another American century; the financial and regulatory changes required to adjust to a more mobile world; religion and nationalism; the connection between democracy and financial markets; and the links between higher education and myths societies live by. And all this is in clear, compelling writing that is devoid of jargon.
Customer Reviews:
Force of Finance worthwhile reading.......2006-11-30
"The Force of Finance: Triumph of the Capital Markets" by Reuven Brenner, Stoddart Publishing Co. Limited, Toronto, 2002 and Texere Publishing London & New York, challenges unsupported conventional thinking in many areas including economics, finance, capital markets, prosperity, freedom and democracy.
"Prosperity is the consequence of one thing and one only: matching talent with capital, and holding both sides accountable," as illustrated by the economic successes of 17th century Netherlands and the modern Asian Tigers. Brenner warns of the injury caused by public policies of confiscation and unproductive regulations, but reports, "for the moment, the U.S. alone has the fundamentals right."
Chapter 2 considers the relationship between capital markets and democracy and elaborates extensively about the 1997 observations of Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., "democracy requires capitalism, but capitalism does not require democracy." More simply stated capitalism thrives where democracy cannot. The legal recognition of private property, open capital markets and dispersion of political power augment both democracy and capitalism. More than any other single factor, "low taxes" bring "economic miracles."
Brenner calls macroeconomics the "twentieth-century pseudo-science" because it is built on the false Keynsian view that governments can or should manipulate economic outcomes.
In Chapter 4 Brenner points out that "voting rights were not much of an obstacle to governments intent on doing harm." Thus, Brenner reasons that democracy and capitalism are safer when politicians possess less, rather than more, power: "referenda significantly diminish the power of politicians and bureaucrats." Experimentation with political change and tools of citizen involvement was truncated and stalled by the Great Wars, the Depression, and the Cold War; but now the time is ripe for renewed interest in reforms, which should be cause for optimism.
Chapter 7, titled "Extracting Sunbeams out of Cucumbers," explores how "ideas that have no foundation gain scientific status." For decades economists have used the lighthouse analogy to advocate government intrusion. If government did not provide lighthouses, then there would be none. However, private-sector lighthouses existed for centuries. How could so many great minds get this fact wrong? Ronald Coarse published the historical correction in 1974, but the false analogy continues to appear in new textbooks. Students "arrive at the intended but utterly misleading conclusion. The frequently repeated idea thus passes for fact." "Students are not being taught science; instead, they are being taught obscure linguistic exercises masquerading as science." "Matching ideas to real-world events is the meaning of being scientific. It is unscientific to either ignore or reject discovered patterns." The non-science of the social sciences and humanities hide in a maze of obscure rhetoric designed to bar critical review by outsiders and to ridicule innovators as lacking understanding. "Aesop was right: Obscurity often brings safety." It is the conformist who survives. "Followers are taught to be blind." Chinese inventiveness ceased when state power increased; it always does.
That so many politicians and economist were attracted to Keynesian views is simply evidence that people respond to incentives. The opportunity for bigger and more intrusive government benefited both groups irrespective of whether the ideas had merit.
"Precedents are incorporated into behavior and institutions, and often outlive the circumstances that created them." "Prosperity requires people to abandon old industries and old ways of doing things, and bet on new ones and new ways."
"Backward-looking societies stay poor." "Stable currency does not guarantee prosperity" ... but "it is a necessary part." "Out-of-the way Iceland, Australia, and New Zealand are all prosperous and technologically up to date. They are not close to either big markets or principal sea routes. ... they have open capital markets."
"In the absence of democratized capital markets, "freedom" is an empty word." "With open markets the poor can move up." "Limiting access to capital markets is the means by which groups can stay in power." "Indeed, the democratization of financial markets and the adoption of the institutions of direct democracy are, the keys to lasting prosperity."
"The United States has its share of bad laws, outdated regulations, complex taxes, and controls inherited from the past, many of these are still unquestioned."
"... as a condition of receiving Western capital, countries should open up their financial markets." Brenner predicts, "If Putin carries out his promise to impose a 13 % flat tax ... Russia will soon prosper, attracting critical masses of talent and capital, reducing corruption, and leapfrogging over many other countries."
In short "The Force of Finance" offers a comprehensive vision for freedom not yet appreciated by many leaders. All peoples will benefit when economic and political freedoms are enlarged. The key is the opening of and access to financial markets and the dispersion of political power, which tends more to interfere with, rather than facilitate, open financial markets. The sooner people gain the courage to confront and change archaic regulatory and political institutions the sooner people will benefit from increased wealth and freedom.
"The Force of Finance" is recommended reading for those interested in deeper understanding of the interdependency of economic and democratic freedoms.
A deeply original synthesis of finance, economics and politics.......2006-07-27
Money, capital markets, brain drains, direct democracy, corruption, crime and gold are woven together with skill to produce a stunningly original picture of the world. The argument that society is shaped by the imperative of access to capital, and that when one channel is blocked another opens, is used to explain a wide variety of historical and current events. You can dam the force of finance to change the direction of the river, but sooner or later, one way or another, the water will get to the sea.
An Inside Look Into A Positive Global Economy.......2002-06-07
Reuven Brenner, an intense, dynamic, and iconoclast economist, has entered a very weighty two cents into the current thought on the world economy with this new book.
With multiple clear examples of politics and history, he shows the difference between America's open capital markets and most of the world's nations closed capital markets, and why America has been at the forefront of econonomic and capitalist development for more than 50 years.
His main argument: Citizens of any nation should have access to capital in order to embark on ventures that will produce profit. The most valuable resource any nation has are its talented citizens, by denying them access to the ability to be entrepreneurs, the nation is hurting itself and its growth. The answer: Let them access the resources they need, but hold both sides accountable. It won't keep an Enron from happening, but it will keep it from happening again, as is obvious with new accounting reforms.
Using examples from pre/post Communist Russia, Latin America, Islamic Fundamentalist states, and budding open capital markets, Brenner proves that any system that restricts access to capital is doomed to fail. Sure to open your mind and expose you to the true story of the global economy, The Force Of Finance is the penultimate book on how to turn a third world nation into a modern state that is living up to its potential.

Free Money.......2001-12-20
Title is very mis-leading..grants only apply if you live in certain states. If you need money why would you spend money for a book that does apply to you...waste of money..
A good buy if...................2001-09-19
This book is a good buy if you live in California, Washington, New York or Floridia or if you are Jewish, elderly or disable or any combination of any of the above listed. I live in Illinois and there was NOT a lot of information for people living here(well not a lot of info. that one who lives here doesn't already know about). If you have the chance to get this book from the library before you buy it, I would suggest that you do so, then you decide.
Not helpful at all.......2001-01-04
I found that if you live in Indiana and you are not old, your health is not failing or you are not of a certain faith...FORGET IT there is nothing available to you. Not very helpful for me. Would not recommend wasting the time to buy this book. In 5 min I was done with it. Hardly worth the anticipation waiting for it.
Good for some.......2000-10-03
There is some good information in this book. Alot of the sources come from the north, although if you take note, you will find some info useful. It is out of date for some references.

Book Description
Among the major professions, certified public accountancy has the most severe underrepresentation of African Americans: less than one percent of CPAs are black. Theresa Hammond explores the history behind this statistic and chronicles the courage and determination of African Americans who sought to enter the field. In the process, she expands our understanding of the links between race, education, and economics.
Drawing on interviews with pioneering black CPAs, among other sources, Hammond sets the stories of black CPAs against the backdrop of the rise of accountancy as a profession, the particular challenges that African Americans trying to enter the field faced, and the strategies that enabled some blacks to become CPAs. Prior to the 1960s, few white-owned accounting firms employed African Americans. Only through nationwide networks established by the first black CPAs did more African Americans gain the requisite professional experience. The civil rights era saw some progress in integrating the field, and black colleges responded by expanding their programs in business and accounting. In the 1980s, however, the backlash against affirmative action heralded the decline of African American participation in accountancy and paved the way for the astonishing lack of diversity that characterizes the field today.

A Must Read for Every African American current and potential CPA.......2005-08-15
As an African American CPA since 1980, this book is very comprehensive in describing the trials and tribulations of our entry into the accounting profession. My father was born in 1927 and had wanted to become a CPA after hearing about Jesse Blayton. Due to the limitations described in this book, he never realized his dream. Because of his interest in accounting, I studied bookkeeping in high school and became hooked.
In 1974, I got very lucky and was admitted to the accounting program at North Carolina A&T State University. There I studied under Dr. Quiester Craig who is chronicled on page 111 on the book. Just as Craig said in his story, at that time, all our students were naive; however Dr. Craig established that the program at NC A&T would be geared toward preparing every accounting graduate to pass the CPA exam.
This book is a must read for every African American CPA and potential CPA and should be textbook material in every HBCU accounting program in the country. Again, against all odds, we have achieved remarkable things.
Inspiring, Exhilarating Yet Heartrending.......2002-08-23
From my vantage point as a black CPA, this book is at once inspiring and uplifting yet heartrending and depressing. After having read about the trials and tribulations of the pioneers of my profession and of my race(who were/are heroic in some sense), I feel compelled to take advantage of today's opportunity out of respect for what they've done to pave the way for those who have followed.
The author does a fantastic job of taking an erstwhile research paper and making it extremely enjoyable to read. This book is must reading for CPAs in general and black CPAs in particular.
Important, Moving, and Entertaining.......2002-08-06
Hammond chronicles the stories of the remarkable individuals who blazed the trail for African-Americans in the accounting profession. Or I should say, began blazing the trail, because as Hammond points out it is still by far the most segregated profession. When most people hear "accounting" they think of something very dry and technical. But this book is far from that. You learn about the profession and how institutional racism operates, but always as a context for the amazing stories, struggles, and personalities that Hammond conveys. She obviously spent many hours interviewing these pioneers and she tells their stories with academic rigor, but also with compassion, respect, and a sense of humor.
Super Duper!.......2002-07-19
Ok, so maybe I haven't read the book, but since I doubt this is going to break best seller records, I figured I could give some information about the author.
She was my accounting professor last semester in a class called Accounting Information Systems. Theresa is funny, engaging and most importantly a very passionate individual, especially about the struggle for racial equality.
She is undoubtedly the first person to do any research on the subject, and in her powerpoint presentation of the book she unravels an interesting tale of the business world's most caucasian profession. The African americans which are the subject of her narrative show themselves are driven by their interest in this niche profession long after all hope has vanished. The quirky personalities of her story tell a story that sheds light upon the grit of the human spirit.

Book Description
New Arenas for Violence examines the history, nature, and causal factors of occupational homicide--murder in the workplace--with a view to the development of a comprehensive understanding of the issue and the introduction of prevention measures designed to establish a safer work environment for the American worker. Through the analysis of a number of actual incidents of homicide, the author constructs a new framework for understanding occupational homicide and its perpetrators. Kelleher develops a new method of categorizing and evaluating crimes of this sort and offers an invaluable profile of the potentially violent worker or client. The book concludes with a compendium of prevention methodologies that are both practical and applicable to a wide variety of workplace environments.

Book Description
How did animal breeding emerge as a movement? Who took part and for what reasons? How do the pedigree and market systems work? What light might the movement shed on the assumptions behind human eugenics?
In Bred for Perfection, Margaret Derry provides the most comprehensive and accessible book yet published on the human quest to improve and develop livestock. Derry, herself a breeder and trained historian of science, explores the "triangle" of genetics, eugenics, and practical breeding, focusing on Shorthorn cattle, show dogs and working dogs, and one type of purebred horse, the Arabian. By examining specific breeders and the animals they produced, she illuminates the role of technology, genetics, culture, and economics in the system of purebred breeding. Bred for Perfection also provides the historical context in which this system arose, adding to our understanding of how domestication works and how our welfare--since the dawn of time--has been intertwined with the lives of animals.
Book Description
A comprehensive training manual for the introductory levels of this popular healing therapy.
• Takes the reader step-by-step through traditional Reiki level I and II classes, with comprehensive instruction in the basic hand positions.
• Includes photographs and medical illustrations.
• Discusses Reiki's origin and purpose, the attunement process, and the many scenarios in which Reiki can provide appropriate healing support.
Reiki, a touch therapy used to recharge and rebalance the body's energy, is quickly joining other complementary therapies like acupuncture and massage in such conventional settings as hospitals, hospices, and psychotherapy practice. An ancient hands-on healing art with origins in the Tibetan sutras, Reiki is a means for both active self-care and administering to others.
This comprehensive book takes the reader step by step through traditional Reiki level I and II classes, discussing Reiki's origins and purpose, describing the attunement process by which a student is imbued with the power to channel life-force energy, and illustrating the many scenarios in which Reiki is an appropriate support for healing. Comprehensive instruction in the basic hand positions and extra positions used in administering Reiki are accompanied by photographs and medical illustrations. Considerations for establishing a professional practice and opportunities for further learning in both traditional Reiki (level III) and nontraditional schools complete the discussion, making this the first book to serve as both an extensive training manual for students and compelling reading for those considering taking a Reiki class.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource!.......2007-03-28
This book is wonderful - absolutely wonderful. I discovered Amy's book in 1999. It is what inspired me to become a Reiki Master/Teacher. I read it from cover to cover as soon as I bought it. Her down-to-Earth writing style keeps you engaged, and she easily explains Reiki, and how it can help you in your own life.
Essential for your reiki library!.......2005-01-21
Amy has done it! I am currently writing a doctoral dissertation on reiki and this is the best reiki recource book I have found! As a reiki practitioner, it is evident that her stories add depth and help paint the true picture of the art of reiki. Thank you for this wonderful reference. It is the most comprehensive reiki book on the market today.
The gratitude shows through.......2000-11-18
From the first paragraph I was drawn into this book. Having just become a first degree practitioner, I felt an amazing sense of gratitude for the special gift that I have been allowed to share. While the way my master taught me is somewhat different from what was described, respect for differing approaches was embedded within the writing. A great deal of information was presented with an accepting attitude for differences. The true spirit and love of Reiki was apparent.
A comprehensive & loving explanation of this amazing power........1999-05-13
This would be the book I'd recommend to anyone first interested in the subject and to those who have been attuned. It is a loving treatment of the subject that sticks closely to the subject, and unlike other books on Reiki, comes with no baggage or axes to grind...just information of Reiki, its healing power, and the application of this power. This book has the best mental preparation for the student, by example, for the loving healing power of Reiki. Highly recommended.
Very Informative Read!.......1998-08-25
Reiki Master, Amy Rowland, takes you step by step through Level I and II classes. She discusses the history behind this ancient healing method, and detailed hand positions are clearly shown through pictures as well as text. The section on practical human anatomy is excellent and goes a long way in relaying what ailments are helped by each hand position. This book serves as an extensive practice manual for students. The author even discusses how to establish a professional practice, so TRADITIONAL REIKI FOR OUR TIMES is also compelling reading for anyone who might consider teaching this wonderful healing art. Anyone who is interested in Reiki must own this book!

Book Description
The papers in this volume cover a large range of questions concerning the dynamics of objects of the Solar System, from theoretical Hamiltonian mechanics to the study of the dynamical behaviour of specific objects, with a strong emphasis on the detection, causes and effects of chaotic behaviour. Several papers describe the very latest contributions in two very lively and recent topics which are considered as a major breakthrough in numerical dynamics: symplectic methods of numerical integration of Hamiltonian systems, and methods for spectral analysis of numerically computed orbits leading to refined tools for the detection and evaluation of chaos. The dynamics of the asteroid belt and other small objects, a fast-moving topic with important implications for the origin and evolution of the Solar System, is also extensively covered. The volume will be of interest to mathematicians and physicists interested in Hamiltonian mechanics and in the dynamics of the Solar System.

Book Description
This book reviews the current state of knowledge of the atmospheres of the giant gaseous planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The current theories of their formation are reviewed and their recently observed temperature, composition and cloud structures are contrasted and compared with simple thermodynamic, radiative transfer and dynamical models. The instruments and techniques that have been used to remotely measure their atmospheric properties are also reviewed, and the likely development of outer planet observations over the next two decades is outlined.

Customer Reviews:
Great Vintage Science Book for Children.......2007-06-25
I like this book for it's beautiful illustrations and the simplicity of explanations. It also has some interesting inaccuracies which would make it perhaps add to it's collectibility. THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN PRIOR TO MAN LANDING ON THE MOON. Pages 22-23 have an illustration of men in space suits holding long ice picks and leaping on some mountains on the moon. In the background is a red rocket ship which has landed on the moon. The caption states, "The first explorers will find the moon a vst desert, with lofty mountains and big craters dotting the dusty plains. The Moon's weak gravity will allow the explorers to move in great leaps."
The chapter on MARS: PLANET OF MYSTERY, is interesting as well:
Page 27 explains, "Mars has no rivers, no oceans, or lakes. But it has a tilt like Earth's and therefore has seasons. When it is winter in one hemisphere, ice or snw covers the area around the pole. This polar cap is probably less than a foot deep, but it contains nearly all the water on the planet! In spring, the ice cap begins to melt. Through the telescopes, we see the dark greenish patches appear along the edges of the cap. These are perhaps areas covered by green moses--the only life believed to exist on the planet...As autum comes, the greenish areas turn brown. As winter sets in, winds carry the water back to the pole, and there it freezes again."
The next chapter covers "MEN OF MARS" It discusses how people thought the canals seen on mars must be irrigation ditches to lead water from the melting snow caps to the farmers fields..."But few astronomers take these ideas seriously...In 1956 Mars came closer to earth than it had come in many years. Astronomers all over the world watched it through telesopes, photographed it, and studied its light with spectroscopes. STILL THEY FOUND NO SURE SIGN THAT THERE IS ANY LIFE ON MARS EXCEPT FOR LOWLY MOSSES...But even if there are no people on Mars, we can look forward to the day when Earth men may explore it."
I think this book is a great collectors piece to contrast our view of the solar system in the 1950's vs now, and how far we have come. It is also lovely for its beautiful illustrations.
What a great fun-to-read book!!!

Book Description
Our Worlds provides a rare "insider" look into the universe and planetary science during the current golden age of space exploration. Readers are guided on an exciting voyage of discovery by eight distinguished researchers who explore the universe with cutting edge techniques. From Chief Scientist on NASA's New Millennium Program Ellen Stofan to planetary theorist Bill McKinnon, each writes from a personal point of view, sharing to the fullest the science and emotion found in the most enticing discoveries and the wonders of the solar system. This volume gives readers an up-close view of Mars, Venus, and the Moon; a trip with Halley's Comet; a visit to the moons of Io, Titan, and Triton; and the ability to experience asteroids in their natural element. Coverage details the most current knowledge of the solar system learned from space missions, including Magellan and Galileo. This volume fully captures the breadth of planetary science, from inner to outer worlds, from telescopic to robotic exploration, and provides an unique glimpse into the drives and interests of the men and women behind the science. It is the most encompassing book on the subject to date and will interest anyone who looks at the night sky and wonders what it would feel like to be able to get a closer look. Alan Stern is a planetary scientist and astrophysicist with both observational and theoretical interests. He is the leader of the Southwest Research Institute's Geophysical, Astrophysical, and Planetary Science group located in Boulder, CO.
