Book Description

The ins and outs of emerging markets
Emerging markets are an integral part of the global business scene. The 1997 Asian meltdown and the Russian debt default scared investors, but as the domestic market becomes more overvalued, investors have begun seeking returns elsewhere. Destined to become a standard in the field, Emerging Markets fills the niche for a balanced evaluation of the investment opportunities in the riskiest markets throughout the world. This practical guide covers what an emerging market is, why corporations and investors should or should not invest in them, and what the risks are. Jeffrey Hooke's new book is ideal for corporations and investors who are starting to look to emerging markets as ways to improve investment returns, expand into new markets, or diversify their portfolios.
Jeffrey C. Hooke (Chevy Chase, MD) is Managing Director of Hooke Associates, LLC, an investment banking firm. He was formerly director of Emerging Markets Partnership, a $4 billion fund focusing on emerging markets, and senior investment officer of the World Bank Group.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars realistic guide to the developing world.......2002-05-20

The book provides a hard hitting summary of both the risks and opportunities of the developing countirs. It also included a lot of solutions to the problems one faces. I liked the way in which it addressed issues from an operating company, equity investor's, and lender's perspectives. Nobody else does that. The anecdotes on various regions were entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-06-27

Former investment banker Jeffrey C. Hooke now carries out financial deals in the developing world. He describes the potential for doing business or investing in the world's 156 emerging markets. Hooke is realistic about the great risks - such as unstable governments in impoverished countries - but he highlights future potential. His book is a solidly researched and clearly written guide to assessing the business climate and deciding what types of products make the most sense in different developing countries. After an overview of the nature of emerging markets, why companies want to participate in or avoid these markets, and how to invest and make loans there, he looks at particular markets in Latin America, Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. We [...] recommend this worthy book to those considering working or investing in emerging markets, but academics or readers interested in how business is conducted in foreign places may also be intrigued.

    Book Description

The introduction of the Mercedes-Benz Production System (MPS) is exemplary of a trend within the automotive industry: the creation and introduction of company-specific standardised production systems. This book contributes to the debate about production systems by examining the social and economic implications of the role of standardisation in production systems. In this context it addresses three core issues: First, the driving forces behind the changing forms and functions of standardisation and the role of institutions therein. Second, the impact of standardisation on the evolution of automotive production systems. Third, based on the author's own empirical research conducted over a three year period at the Mercedes-Benz plant Stuttgart-Untertürkheim/Germany, the book examines the influence of standardisation on the work of actors on the shop floor in terms of organisational learning processes and the regulation of work.

      Book Description

World soils contain about 1500 gigatons of organic carbon. This large carbon reserve can increase atmospheric concentrations of CO2 by soil misuse or mismanagement, or it can reverse the 'greenhouse' effect by judicious land use and proper soil management. Soil Processes and the Carbon Cycle describes soil processes and their effects on the global carbon cycle while relating soil properties to soil quality and potential and actual carbon reserves in the soil. In addition, this book deals with modeling the carbon cycle in soil, and with methods of soil carbon determinations.

        Description:
Thermal gradient apparatus has been used to study enzyme activity and carbon cycling in peat collected seasonally from a Northern upland peatland. A thermal optimum was observed in the peat where maximum carbon-cycling enzyme activities (phenol oxidase and @b-glucosidase), phenolic compound concentrations, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and microbial respiration (CO"2 efflux) were all found in a given season. The thermal optimum for these carbon-cycling processes coincided with the highest ambient soil temperature recorded at the time of peat collection, suggesting microbial acclimation to the external conditions. Under the waterlogged conditions of this experiment, phenol oxidase activites correlated positively with phenolic compounds (winter 0.96, P <0.01; spring 0.92, P <0.001; summer 0.94, P <0.001; autumn 0.88, P <0.001) and @b-glucosidase activities with DOC (winter 0.91, P <0.01; spring 0.85, P <0.01; summer 0.92, P <0.001; autumn 0.72, P <0.05). We propose, therefore, that the relative activities of these enzymes is crucial in mobilising DOC from the peat matrix, with implications for carbon exports to the receiving waters (magnitude and molecular weight distribution) and CO"2 efflux to the atmosphere. The pronounced seasonality in carbon processing found here, must be taken into account when modelling carbon flux in and from these systems, if responses to climate change are to be predicted satisfactorily. Furthermore, because the optimum activity of these carbon-cycling enzymes shifted with seasonal changes in temperature, it is essential to perform enzyme assays in soil ecological investigations at field temperatures (rather than standardised temperatures), when information on natural process rates is required.

Danny Goodman felt that he couldn't trust any of the documentation on Dynamic HTML (DHTML) that he read (too many contradictions), so he wrote this book as a reference for working with his own clients. After testing tags and techniques on multiple releases of the main browsers, Goodman came up with very practical information--some of which you may not find in any other resource.

Goodman assumes a solid foundation, if not expertise, in basic HTML and an understanding of what DHTML is all about. From those assumptions, he presents a meaty, information-dense volume. The first of the book's four sections discusses industry standards and how to apply the basic principles of DHTML. He emphasizes the differences in Web browsers and discusses how to build pages so that they work well in both Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The second section is an extensive, quick reference of all the tags, objects, and properties of HTML, cascading style sheets, Document Object Model, and core JavaScript. A particularly handy cross-reference guide to this information follows, helping you locate it in alternate ways. The final section contains appendices, with useful tables of values and commands. --Elizabeth Lewis

If you are a Web content developer these days, you have a lot of information to keep track of. You need to stay current on the relevant Web specifications, like HTML, CSS, DOM, and ECMAScript. You also need to know how the latest Web browsers from Netscape and Microsoft actually implement these standards, since browser implementations of the standards are less than perfect. Right now, you're forced to keep multiple reference books open on your desk (or multiple browser windows open on your screen), just to develop a simple dynamic Web page that works properly under both Navigator and Internet Explorer. Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Reference changes all that. This book is an indispensable compendium for Web content developers. It contains everything you need to create functional cross-platform Web applications, including: o A complete reference for all of the HTML tags, CSS style attributes, browser document objects, and JavaScript objects supported by the various standards and the latest versions of Navigator and Internet Explorer. Browser compatibility is emphasized throughout; the reference pages clearly indicate browser support for every entity. o Handy cross-reference indexes that make it easy to find interrelated HTML tags, style attributes, and document objects. o An advanced introduction to creating dynamic Web content that addresses the cross-platform compromises inherent in Web page design today. 5 out of 5 stars The Bible, Third Edition.......2007-09-17

The finest review of this book I can give is simply this: I bought the first edition in 1999, the second edition in 2003, the third edition in 2007, and as long as Danny Goodman and O'Reilly keep up the good work, I'll buy the fourth edition in 2011. There is no more indispensible book available for the Web GUI professional.

One caveat: This book is not for beginners. If you don't already know how to build a modern DHTML/CSS/JS/Ajax interface, this book will likely be a waste of money. Moreover, if you're looking for how-tos and recipes, look elsewhere. This is a comprehensive encyclopedia of the DHTML universe, nothing more and nothing less.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamic HTML: The Definitive Reference.......2007-07-19

If you do any sort of web design, whether as a do-it yourself novice or as a professional web designer, Dynamic HTML is a must have resource. This all inclusive guide includes a myriad of features for design elements, objects, and styles organized in several easy to understand and easy to use sections: Alphabetical HTML Reference, Shared DOM Reference, Alphabetical DOM Reference, Event Reference, CSS Reference, and Java Script Reference, Cross Reference. All of these examples include actually bit of code that the reader can use as well as associated attributes and their code to tailor that element, object, or style to your desired specifications. This aspect allows the reader to follow through virtually step by step taking a new concept from inception through to a professional look and feel.

I can already tell that Dynamic HTML is going to be one of those desk references that I keep close by my computer. The book is already plastered with a number of post-it notes in places that I need to fix on my existing web pages, concepts that want to experiment with in the future, or ways that I could make my websites more accessible. Having a good book with these aspects all in one place is a boon.

Still, where I will probably gain the most valuable use of this book is in the comparative aspect of the entries. Along with each of the detailed entries in all of the categories, the author has included information about how each feature translates in the different browsers (Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla, Safari, Opera, and W3C HTML). Anyone who has spent weeks making their website just perfect only to have their best buddy with a different type of browser say that it's all wonky knows that a good detailed cross reference resource is invaluable. Having one as well organized and intuitive as this one is nothing short of amazing.

5 out of 5 stars This book just keeps getting better.......2007-06-04

Each iteration of this book gets better and better. This third edition has been expanded with an amazing CSS reference, updates for AJAX, and now includes information on IE, Netscape, Mozilla (e.g. Firefox), Safari, Opera, and the HTML DOM. By far, this is the most comprehensive version of this book to date.

One of the biggest gripes I had with previous editions of this book was that it felt very IE-centric. In prior editions, the Mac was completely ignored as was Opera and pretty much anything other than IE and Netscape. This has all changed in this latest update.

If you have never seen a copy of this book before, it is divided into 9 sections: a standard HTML reference, an alphabetical HMTL reference, standard and alphabetical DOM references, a Javascript language and event reference, an outstanding CSS reference, and appendices. The book is designed in such a way so as to be easy to quickly find material on the HTML tag, CSS attribute, or Javascript method desired.

Of particular note in this edition is the update for AJAX. In the Javascript section, the reader will now find nearly 50 extra pages dedicated simply to handling and processing XML in Javascript.

Hands down, this was--and still is--the absolute best dynamic HTML reference available today. While each edition gets better and better, I think this edition in particular is a real standout. The expansion of the CSS reference section, the addition of documentation related to AJAX, and the expansion of the reference sections to cover Mozilla, Safari, and Opera make this book a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Comprehensive Reference.......2007-04-24

Looking for a single reference for all your web development needs? Well, Dynamic HTML: the Definitive Reference isn't quite that, but it comes awfully close. It's not simply a DHTML reference; there's detailed reference info on XHTML, CSS, DOM, and Javascript -- all of which are necessary to create good DHTML.

Most of the book is divided into five sections, including the above mentioned references, as well as a section on Events. The references are easily navigated, clearly explained, and provide nice examples. The most valuable bits of information for many web developers are probably the compatibility info provided for each entry in the reference sections.

The remainder of the book offers handy cross-references and appendices. The cross references include: an HTML/XHTML Attribute Index, and DOM references by Property, Method, and Event. The appendices include info on colors, special characters, ASCII key codes, editable content commands, elements/attributes available in W3C standards, and the relationships between various Mozilla based browsers.

Of course, this is a reference book, so there's limited cohesion in the examples. There is no theme to follow and re-create a full-featured DHTML web site. But the book is intended to be a reference. There are other books for step-by-step DHTML development.

Likewise, this is a comprehensive reference, and therefore quite a thick book. There are separate CSS and JavaScript references available (also very handy), but this single volume packs a lot of punch.

A combination primer and reference manual specific to Microsoft Internet Explorer 5, IE5 Dynamic HTML Programmer's Reference is a very useful companion for Web coders. The first half of this title presents dynamic HTML (DHTML) rapidly yet thoroughly. The rear of the book comprises a series of reference tables and listings that form a quite comprehensive repository of coding information.

The book begins with an overview of DHTML, followed by a look at how style sheets let you assert much greater control over your pages than plain HTML. The authors then explain the Dynamic HTML Browser Object Model and the Dynamic HTML Document Object in depth, pointing out along the way how each provides control over page and element levels. With this background covered, the book then moves into dynamic techniques such as event handling, scripting, and manipulating page elements. The first part concludes with a useful discussion of data binding and a quick introduction to Extensible Markup Language (XML).

The reference portion of the book includes a formal specification for the Browser Object Model, as well as DHTML properties, methods, and events. Next comes a full listing of DHTML tags with syntax specifications and code examples. This section doesn't stop with DHTML, however. It also includes tutorials for VBScript, JScript, and special character tables, making this book a well-rounded tool. --Stephen W Plain

The Code works the examples are easy to follow and the title of the book says IE5 Dynamic HTML which means that it has to work with vbscript. this is another excellent Wrox book

2 out of 5 stars examples use VBScript, not Javascript.......2001-07-25

Although the subject matter is well covered, all the code examples that I saw are written in VBScript. That renders the book effectively useless if you code your client side script in javascript (which is the industry standard).
If you are a javascript coder then get Danny Goodman's Dynamic HTML, published by O'Reilly.

            5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2001-07-25

Although web browsers have evolved beyond IE5, this is still a great book. It is well organized and easily referenced. I keep it handy for the quick look up need without having to go into the MSDN library. There is a heavy emphasis on VBScript. It is worth the investment.

            5 out of 5 stars Really usefull Programmer's Reference.......2000-03-09

I knew some (D)HTML before buying this book, but I was looking for a book I could use when I needed to make something besides "normal" DHTML (use on many sites). AND THIS IS IT!

The books first half is about Dynamic HTML (methods, events ect.), and the second half is a really great reference!

This gave me the opportunity to make better pages than on so many other sites, so if you're looking for a book where you don't have to read many pages of useless stuff before getting to the point, then this is defiantly what I would advise you to buy! (A great combination with this book could be "Professional VB6 Web Programming" - Wrox)

5 out of 5 stars Best book on this topic I've read.......1999-05-26

This book is very readable, gets right to the point, and will not put you to sleep. Several others (such as Inside DHTML) are so anhydrous they'll suck up all the rain in Seattle. This book however is a great intro to DHTML. You don't have to be an expert in HTML to get a lot out of this book. Has good appendices on HTML, DHTML, JScript, and VBScript.

2 out of 5 stars Over assumes scope of knowledge.......2001-09-24

This book was rather hard to understand. In order to use it, it assumed you knew all VBscript, alot of CSS, and some JavaScript. The web address's for downloading the source code are obsolete, and it's just plain hard to understand. Not that I have anything against DHTML, except the person who wrote assumes you are a seasoned programmer who knows how and why you pre-declare variables, fetch properties and methods, have CSS down pat, ad infitum. Sic. By the way, I am really 13.

            5 out of 5 stars Clear-cut, right-to-the-point, and perfect!.......1998-03-12

I've been creating web pages for about a year and a half. I heard about DHTML, and I wanted to learn it.
Suffice it to say that my second Wrox book was almost as good as the flawless first. I reccomend it for any webmaster with a solid grasp of HTML and a basic knowledge of either JavaScript to VBScript. The clear, concise explanations assume you have no real expereince with DHTML (such as in my case), so it's explained quite well.

            BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Well done guide in a great format........1998-01-02

This book is certainly well done, especially for it's smaller format. A few things should be noted, the most important of which is that you should have prior knowledge of both HTML 3.x and some knowledge of scripting. With out these mental tools, I could easily see how someone could get confused by this book. For anyone intermediate or above though, this book will quickly get you up to speed on IE4 DHTML with clear lessons on the basics, and a fantastic reference. My only complaints really is that the scripting was done in VBScript, not JavaScript.

5 out of 5 stars Great book! Good for beginner or intermediate webmaster........1997-10-29

This is a great book. The samples are clear, easy to follow and give you something that you can use in your web development. The last half of the book is a great reference section that I use a lot. It covered the subject very well at the beginner and intermediate level. But, it left me looking for more as I discovered just how powerful DHTML really is.
