Comparative Labour Law And Industrial Relations In Industrialized Market Economies 2004
A. Gladstone Manufacturer: Kluwer Law International ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9041122893 |
Book Description
Comparativism is no longer a purely academic exercise but has increasingly become an urgent necessity for industrial relations and legal practitioners due to the globalisation of the economy, the massive introduction of new information technology, the growth of multinational enterprises and the impact of international and regional organizations aspiring to harmonize rules. The growing need for comprehensive, up-to-date and readily available information on labour law and industrial relations in different countries led to the publication of the International Encyclopaedia for Labour Law and Industrial Relations, in which almost 70 international and national monographs have been published thus far. This book, Comparative Labour Law and Industrial Relations in Industrialized Market Economies, goes a step further than the Encyclopaedia inasmuch as most of the chapters provide comparative and integrated thematic treatment. Our aim is to describe the salient characteristics and trends in labour law and industrial relations in the contemporary world. Encouraged by the warm reception of the first six editions, we hope that also the seventh edition will serve as a textbook and reference work to facilitate the task of teachers and students of comparative labour law and industrial relations. We hope, too, that the book will provide labour lawyers, HRM and industrial relations specialists with the necessary insights to cope with a world which is increasingly international.

`The Fourth Edition of International and Comparative Employment Relations continues to set the standards for learning about this subject' - Professor Thomas A Kochan, Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
How is globalization impacting on employment relations? Which are the most appropriate theories for explaining such impacts? What is the context for human resource management in other countries? What can we learn from the experiences of other countries? Which are the major issues in employment relations in the world's leading economies?
One of the main reasons for studying the experiences of other societies is to gain a better insight into your own country and practices. In this important new edition, experts from ten countries analyze employment relations in their countries, including the characteristics of the major groups and parties concerned, and the nature and types of bargaining and power relationships.
Earlier editions of this book became the standard text for a worldwide readership of students and specialists. It was widely recommended on courses and used by governments, companies and unions around the world. This new edition has been completely revised and is being translated into several other languages. Comparative chapters examine globalization, trends and theories across developed market economies and an appendix provides valuable comparative economic and labour-market data. It also includes useful www references and is supported by a web site, which you can access by clicking on the companion website logo link above.
Each country is analyzed according to a similar format, with an examination of the environment of employment relations-economic, historical, legal, social and political-and the major `players'; employers, unions and governments. Then follow descriptions of the main processes of employment relations, such as local and centralized collective bargaining, arbitration and mediation, joint consultation and employee participation. Important and topical issues are discussed, such as: non-unionised workplaces, novel forms of human resource management, labour law reform, employee involvement, multinational enterprises, differences between Asian and western companies, small and medium sized enterprises, migrant workers, technological change, labour market flexibility and pay determination. These issues are important in most countries and valuable lessons can be learnt from the experiences of others.
This book is essential reading for practitioners and students of industrial relations and human resource management at graduate and undergraduate level, for specialists in international business and economics, and for practitioners in governments, employers and unions.

Decent Work in Denmark: Employment, Social Efficiency, and Economic Security (International Labour Office)
Manufacturer: International Labor Office ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 9221132978 |
Book Description
One of the central challenges in the international community today is how to make globalization work for the benefit of all. This volume examines Denmark-one of the few countries to successfully integrate the global economy on the basis of balanced social and economic policies.Sustaining competitiveness at a global level while maintaining high standards of labour and social protection is often a challenge, but this study reveals how Denmark has pioneered mechanisms to achieve this crucial balance and promote decent work for all. In fact, this volume shows how such standards are not only a consequence of economic growth, but also an essential basis for growth and competitiveness. It demonstrates how the integration of social and economic policies and the role of social dialogue are instrumental in this regard. Likewise, other dynamic Danish policies are highlighted, such as systems of vocational education and training, active labour market policy, combination of labour market flexibility and income security, social protection and welfare reform and other programs for reconciling work and family life.
With a view to drawing useful lessons, this book presents Denmark's policies as an excellent starting point for other countries looking to create greater economic strength and social cohesion in this ear of globalization.

The Embedded Corporation: Corporate Governance and Employment Relations in Japan and the United States
Sanford M. Jacoby Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0691119996 |
Book Description
Is there one best way to run the modern business corporation? What is the appropriate balance between shareholders, executives, and employees? These questions are being vigorously debated as layoffs, scandals, and restructurings rattle companies around the world. The common assumption is that globalization is merging the varieties of corporate capitalism. Yet, as this book shows, corporations in Japan and the United States are responding differently to the pressures unleashed by globalization. In America, shareholders have emerged as dominant while employment is more transitory and market-oriented. In Japan, shareholders are gaining influence but employees still play a key role in corporate strategy and governance. In The Embedded Corporation, Sanford Jacoby traces this enduring diversity to national differences in economic history and social norms, and, paradoxically, to global competition itself.
The book's vantage point for exploring the varieties of capitalism is the headquarters of large corporations--in particular, their human resources departments, where changes in markets and technology turn into corporate labor policies affecting millions of workers. Jacoby reveals the inner workings of these departments. Despite some cross-fertilization, Japanese and American corporations maintain distinctive approaches to human resource management, with Japanese HR departments occupying a more central position within the corporation. As Jacoby shows, this has important consequences for how firms compete, for corporate governance, and even for the level of inequality in Japan and the United States.
The Embedded Corporation is a major contribution to our understanding of comparative management and the relationship between business, society, and the global economy.

Affirmative Talk, Affirmative Action: A Comparative Study of the Politics of Affirmative Action
Augustus J. Jones Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275936813 |
Book Description
Affirmative action programs have been implemented in over 50 jurisdictions in the United States, yet studies of a number of these communities have shown that most efforts to meet proposed race-conscious hiring goals have been unsuccessful. This unique comparative case study investigates the reasons for the success or failure of affirmative action programs in two Southern communities. Augustus J. Jones, Jr. challenges the findings in the literature that affirmative action efforts are doomed to failure. This analysis does what similar studies have failed to do: it identifies and defines those elements--communications, resources, commitment, political-social conditions, and bureaucratic arrangements--required for the successful execution of any public policy program, and then offers appropriate strategies in a detailed, step-by-step approach for successfully executing affirmative action goals. Research for the volume includes over 50 interviews of city, state, and federal officials responsible for implementing affirmative action goals, on-the-spot observations of the communities' affirmative action shops, and written records of city and country commission meetings. Following an introductory chapter that outlines the purpose, justifications, and methodology of the work, the second chapter compares variables within the two communities, such as their civil rights records, political orientation, and progress in meeting affirmative action goals. Five subsequent chapters focus on the key elements in race-conscious hiring programs, including communications, resources, commitment, political conditions, and organizational arrangements. The final chapter offers conclusions, a recipe for successful affirmative action programs, and speculations about the future of these programs. This useful assessment will become a standard affirmative action how-to book for scholars, students, policy analysts, bureaucrats both inside and outside government, and equal opportunity officers at the federal, state, and local levels who are responsible for implementing and enforcing equal opportunity laws and affirmative action goals.

The American Workplace: Skills, Pay, and Employment Involvement (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics)
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521650283 |
Book Description
This volume contributes to a growing consensus about effective workplace practices. The collection combines detailed studies of single industries (automobile assembly, apparel, and machine tools) with cross-industry studies of financial performance. Compared to most past investigations, the research here has better measures of both workplace practices and organizational performance. The contributors find that systems of innovative human resource management practices can have large effects on business performance. Success does not come from any single innovation, but from a coherent system encompassing pay, training, and employee involvement.
