Finally the Truth about the Missions!.......2001-08-07
So-called scholars dismiss this book as "propaganda", but it is without question the best book about the missions of California. Both of the authors are American Indians and Rupert Costo was a famous Cahuilla Indian from the Southern California region. This book does not use written sources which is why historians dismiss it. However, they interview the Indian people whose ancestors were in the California missions and they relate the oral histories that have been handed down for the last 200 years. The bottom line is that here is proof for all who care to listen that California Indians HATED the missions. Historians can write what they want, but this is the real history direct from the people. Every kid in California should be required to read this.
Propaganda Rather Than History.......2001-08-01
The Costos have edited a volume which makes the Native American case against the Spanish/Mexican mission system in California. This is an entirely legitimate and plausible position to take, but the manner of its presentation here falls far short of normal standards for responsible history. Unsubstantiated rumors, personal diatribes, and factual inaccuracies take the place of careful research or any striving toward a balanced assessment. Students of contemporary Indian politics will nonetheless find some interesting and useful material mixed in the volume. As a whole, though, the mixture does no credit to its editors or its publisher.

This book reproduces the proceedings of the last of a series of EUROCONFERENCE dedicated to the on-going near-infrared sky surveys DENIS and 2MASS. It presents the current status of both projects and some of the most outstanding results they have recently achieved in various areas of galactic and extragalactic astronomy. They deal with the determination of basic parameters of the galactic structure, the stellar content of the bulge, the construction of unbiased and statistically significant samples of isolated very low mass stars and brown dwarfs, the improvement of the low-end of the stellar luminosity and mass functions, the complete census of young stellar objects in nearby giant molecular clouds, the accurate determination of the luminosity function of late-type giants in the Magellanic Clouds and the structure of the local universe. The analysis of a very small subsample of the full expected set of data promises an extraordinary harvest of discoveries in the next few years especially when these data are merged with the results of major related space missions such as Hipparcos and ISO.
