2 out of 5 stars Like a telephone book.......2006-04-17

I was very dissappointed in this math textbook. I purchased it full price from the university, because they didn't have any used copies, and regretted it. It's basically like a telephone book of math information. You look something up, there's a short entry, and then tons and tons of problems. It contains everything, but the writing style is very dense, like they are trying to cram everything in. Its supposedly for applications oriented work, but I actually find more "theoretical" textbooks to have better and more well-described applications. A lot of the applications are just problems to solve that I question the real world relevance of. Bottom line, if you take a class that requires this book, I'd try to get a used copy or share a copy with some classmates, xerox the problem sets required for your homeworks, and get some other calculus textbooks to study from (one that I think is very interesting, if underutilized, is "Calculus In Context". Also take good notes in class and make sure you know the topics that are covered, so you can learn them somewhere else. Finally, unlike the previous reviewer, I do not hope the authors get cancer, but I do hope universities start carrying other textbooks instead of this one.

1 out of 5 stars OUCH!.......2004-10-03

It assumes that you know a lot about math already so it does _not_ contain step by step. Mostly it just says "Here, this is the problem and this is the answer". How you get from point 'A' to point 'B' is a total mystery.

Bottom line, if the instructor had known that the book was this bad, he would have changed it to something better so that we could actually go through more stuff then we did.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written Piece.......2004-05-06

It's simply a bad math text. I hope the authors get cancer.

5 out of 5 stars Do you like the Matrix??.......2002-08-18

Did you like The Matrix? If you did you will love this book, it is filled with Matricies (the plural version of matrix). So buying this book is like having all three of the Matrix movies at once. All the excitement and all of knowledge, with this book you are "The One" and will never have to wonder what the Matrix is again. If you don't like the Matrix maybe you have wondered what the answer to f(x,y)= 4x + 5y - 6 is. Well I'm not going to ruin the ending of the book for you but the answer can be found in the back of this book(pg. A-90). Oh the suspense!!! Either way this book is a great read and if you are taking the class related to this book, you will never pass without it.

4 out of 5 stars I thought it was pretty good actually.......2001-10-20

I also had this book for two math classes and found it to be pretty good, probably one of the better text books I've had. It explained things better than my teachers did! In all fairness, I knew all the math before the calculus part so I only really read the book in an in-depth manner the last 3 or 4 chapters. Anyway, just a different opinion.

2 out of 5 stars Is this book talking about math? Did I miss something?.......2001-06-21

I am a college student and had the unfortunete experience to have to use this utterly useless textbook for two different courses--a finite math and a calculus course. The text is very technical and wordy, with terrible examples not explaining steps but rather using the authors 'ego-boosting' terms such as 'obvioulsy', 'of course' and 'simply' -- wrongly assuming that drawn out text taught the student something. Do not buy this book if you are looking to learn calc--there has got to be something better.

          5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2004-09-26

I used the second edition of this book many years ago in college. Its easy to understand and does a good job of covering its intended subject matter.

5 out of 5 stars A great textbook for end users of mathematics.......2000-04-27

This book is just very good. It is a top-quality, superbly on target solution for end users of mathematics. I had selected and subsequently used it as a textbook for a freshman calculus course aimed at prospective economics majors at an Ivy League college. My goal was to present a broad scope of the fundamental concepts of applied mathematics relevant to the social sciences, while keeping the exposition at the basic level of mathematical sophistication. Given the objective, one needs a textbook that would replace most proofs with carefully chosen exemplifications, rely on technically undemanding exercises, but enable the teacher to introduce concepts at a lively pace and tie them to interesting applications. This textbook meets all the requirements.

Our course used essentially only the more advanced parts of the book. The selection of topics was systematized by the idea of staying focused on some of the basic mathematical methods designed for solving broadly understood problems of optimization, extrapolation, and prediction. Formally, students were required to learn algorithmic skills, like finding extrema of functions of one and several variables, linear programming, basic routines for ordinary differential equations and Markov chains. Primary emphasis was put on understanding the differences and similarities between continuous and discrete, deterministic and random. The book served us well and we felt truly rewarded by its amazing collection of well selected, well thought-through real-life applications. I am enthusiastic about this book and so were very many of my students.

I used this textbook in my first calculus class. The applied calculus class showed me some of the things this stuff can actually be used for. The authors and editors have combined excellent graphics, and outstanding homework problems. If you are a gluton for punishment from word problems, or if you need help at the most basic level of calculus, this is the book you'll need.

                Book Description

Consumer markets for foods and beverages in developed countries are well supplied and highly fragmented. Yet, the question being asked is how close retailers actually come to fulfilling their customers' requirements. The concept of consumer value is one of the main pillars underpinning the theory of market differentiation. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of satisfaction in relation to the consumption of food, with both food science and consumer science playing central parts. It approaches food quality from both the technical and the consumer satisfaction perspectives, and assesses the roles of management and regulatory tools in delivering food quality for all. Each area is discussed in detail, using the appropriate technical terminology, but keeping the text accessible to readers from both academic traditions, as well as to non-specialist readers.
