Good intro and review of the material.......2006-03-09

Having read a few books on time series analysis, Enders provides the best introduction to the area. The approach is simple and practically oriented. Explaining the basics of the area with limited use of math is beneficial. With this area developing so rapidly, a new, updated edition would be a welcome book on my shelf.

Excellent as a practical quide - a must have handbook - recent development are here too .......2006-02-04

I bought this book as an introductory reading to time series. And found it very easy to understand, both the theoretical explanations and practical applications. I think it is a "must have handbook" for any economics student. The last edition also covers the recent panel unit root tests, not the 2nd generation ones but Im, Pesaran, Shin panel test is explanained pretty well. Graphical illustrations of series and visual detection of possible problems are nice for beginners. Also, shows how to analyze data step-by-step with plenty of examples. In overall I think it is a great investment for those doing empirical studies and/or starting to learn/work with time series.

Practical book on time series econometrics.......2005-03-29

I am a Financial Engineer working primarily in risk management. Over the past few months I've had to study up on time series-related topics (both GARCH and cointegration-based analyses). This book is excellent for someone who needs to find time-series information and then apply it to a problem in a hurry. The explanations are clear and intuitive, yet mathematically precise. There are plenty of examples on how to apply techniques to real world problems, including lucid discussions of the proper statistical tests to use for the various methodologies.

Like many engineers, I often find myself scrambling to find a good source for a model or system component I will have to design, usually under tight time constraints. This is a perfect example of the type of textbook I always hope to find when starting such a task.

An Elementary Book.......2001-05-20

The book is an introduction to time series and covers ARMA, VAR Unit roots and Basic Cointegration, is a good book for people that want learn time series quickly, the book has some elementary theory of time series and many examples and exercises, the computacional problems needs some of RATS ...the book describes time series without advanced mathematics.

Lead on..........2006-02-09

As an undergraduate, I studied political science; as a graduate student, I studied history (among other things) - however, few if any of my classes ever dealt with the actual mechanics of business, despite dealing with business in a more general sense (as it would fit in the context of history and politics). I decided that it was important to learn some of the basic concepts of business administration, and the Portable MBA series by John Wiley & Sons publishers fit the bill.

This book on psychology for leaders is not a typical rah-rah work of motivation - there are many such books available for both personal motivation as well as motivational strategy manuals (I believe that Zig Ziglar was one of the first such authors I read in that regard; Tony Robbins is perhaps one of the better known motivational speakers around today). While this book will give some insight into how such motivational work succeeds, this book concentrates on giving an understanding of the underlying psychological forces that motivate people in a much deeper way. Conflict management is also high on the list of topics here, for little can sap the motivational energies of people than can unhealthy conflict; on the other hand, healthy competition can often promote motivation.

Beyond the theory, however, this book gives practical suggestions for applying the ideas that come from psychological understanding. It is all well and good to say that trust is important or that listening is crucial, but how do these get presented in a practical way? 'Knowing an idea does not mean that the idea automatically gets translated into action; believing that you should be empathetic does not mean that you are empathetic. This book was written to help leaders build on, extend, and refine their ideas and to encourage discussion and application'.

Unlike many volumes in the Portable MBA series, this one is primarily the work of two authors, rather than an editor or two with a number of contributors. The authors, Dean Tjosvold and Mary Tjosvold, have both academic and professional experience, and do a good job at explaining things in terms that the non-professional can understanding. Anyone with a basic undergraduate background should find this volume accessible, and indeed motivational in many parts.

This book is a good one for the new manager, the manager-to-be (or manager-wanna-be), or the established and experienced leader looking for new insight and ideas.

Finally, the book I needed.......2004-10-25

This book is the one I would most highly recommend to people who are looking to address the many issues found in their business environment. The Tjosvolds have developed a work here which is rich in usable material, is written clearly, and does not trivialize the imporance of the issues they address. This is NOT the usual cookie cutter business book; it is a serious work which is practical and can be put to use immediately in any sized company. I also personally found it motivational and inspiration to my efforts as a change leader.

I think Dr. Vernon Woolf is a very powerful man. Not powerful in the sense of getting his way or making things happen, but powerful in the manner of teaching us how to be become personally empowered beyond all manners of traditional thinking. Dr. Woolf has discovered the multi-dimensionality of our "personal realities" and learned how to access our "quantum selves," - what he describes as our Holodynamic nature..

Dr. Woolf carefully and fully explains how our lives are a product of our beliefs and how our beliefs are a product of our experiences, misinterpretations of life and genetics. He shows us how to "unstick" faulty perceptions (and beliefs) about ourselves and to let our potential flow out of us as it was always meant to be.

Vernon Woolf has experienced everything in life including a huge participation in the unfolding of the rebuilding of Russia after the collapse of Communism in the Soviet Union. Not only did he participate in the deconstruction of the highest Ministries of Soviet government into civilian departments, he was responsible for teaching thousands of people to heal themselves of physical, mental and emotional afflictions and put their lives on track like never before.. Just getting erroneous beliefs out of the way in our lives is HUGE, but he does this and so much more!

This gentleman (in the '70's) reduced the case load of the State Psychiatric Hospital in Utah by 80% over a three year period and completely eradicated drug abuse in communities that he taught in (teaching people how to teach other people), brought gangs members back into the school system, and on and on.

Learn how to track your beliefs, uncover your repressed potential and build a better life for yourself. Learn how and why immature beliefs and values hold you back. Learn how to love where you are so you can start moving on to your possibilities.

I most heartily recommend his book Holodynamics: How to Develop and Manage Your Personal Power and his newer book The Dance of Life: Transform Your World NOW!

it's a good bk and written with mission. It brings me some insight about what music can do. However, to be better in using this bk, you need to have some know-how on music, or you might find it a little difficult to understand. Anyway, it a gd bk !

The Power of Sound.......2003-06-14

Psychoacoustics is the study of how sound affects the human nervous system. One of the pioneer researchers in this exciting new field is Joshua Leeds, a composer, writer, and consultant. He has analyzed and compiled the studies and known data in The Power of Sound, his latest book.

His work is based on the premise that sound is a nutrient for the nervous system. Thus different sounds have varying effects on listeners. Although music is sound, not all sound is music. He discusses exactly what sound is, what it does to us, and what it can do for us. He emphasizes that we need to develop "sonic responsibility," that is, an awareness of the sounds continually bombarding us and taking steps to protect ourselves from harmful noises.

Leeds says that "Sound, like other elements, can fuel or deplete us," adding that "increasing noise pollution affects the planet's citizenry physiologically and psychologically."

He explains vibration, resonance, and entrainment, and how those can have a negative or positive effect on people. He then discusses therapeutic uses of sound, and includes a section detailing how to select particular sounds to accomplish certain goals. For example, high sounds will "charge" the system and increase activity, while bass sounds can "discharge" the system and decrease activity.

He also includes information for health practitioners for use in correcting various conditions, such as learning disabilities, relaxation techniques, and reduction of medications.

Extensive appendices provide additional information on music, sound and music therapy, and resources. Leeds also includes a CD with specially orchestrated music designed for motivation, relaxation, learning, inspiration, productivity, and concentration.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Combining horizontal flow treatment wells (HFTWs) with in situ biodegradation is an innovative approach with the potential to remediate perchlorate-contaminated groundwater. A technology model was recently developed that combines the groundwater flow induced by HFTWs with in situ biodegradation processes that result from using the HFTWs to mix electron donor into perchlorate-contaminated groundwater. A field demonstration of this approach is planned to begin this year. In order to apply the technology in the field, project managers need to understand how contaminated site conditions and technology design parameters impact technology performance. One way to gain this understanding is to use the technology model to select engineering design parameters that optimize performance under given site conditions. In particular, a project manager desires to design a system that: 1) maximizes perchlorate destruction; 2) minimizes treatment expense; and 3) attains regulatory limits on down gradient contaminant concentrations. Unfortunately, for a relatively complex technology with a number of engineering design parameters to determine, as well as multiple objectives, system optimization is not straightforward. In this study, a multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is used to determine design parameter values (flow rate, well spacing, concentration of injected electron donor, and injection schedule) that optimize the first two objectives noted; to maximize perchlorate destruction while minimizing cost.

Interesting read about Texas cotton industry during the 30s.......2006-05-04

Dr. Volanto has written an interesting book about the New Deal's attempt to deal with ever dropping cotton prices and overproduction which only worsened the Great Depression. He writes about the various years and the attempts by FDR and the AAA department to get farmers to voluntarily reduce their crops and pay them to plow up their lands with the goal of bring production under control. He makes an interesting point in the book when he notes that severe droughts did more to help limit cotton production than did the AAA's programs.
It's a short history of just one state's problems during the Great Depression. He does not compare the AAA (Agricultural Adjustment Act) program in Texas with other cotton producing states (which would have been an asset to the book) but it's a good historical read and very informative.

These proceedings of a workshop held at Isle-aux-Coudres, Quebec, Canada in August 1993, provide a comprehensive, up-to- date assessment of a fundamental subject in modern stellar astrophysics. Hot, luminous stars play a crucial role in the rapid recycling of matter in dense regions of the Universe. The most luminous objects generate the strongest outflows of material, which in turn have a profound impact on both the interstellar medium and the underlying stars themselves. However, recent observational and theoretical advances have shown that these outflows are highly unstable and inhomogeneous. These characteristics constitute a fundamental property of the outflows that can no longer be disregarded.
Instability and Variability of Hot-Star Winds provides an in-depth assessment of this important phenomenon from both an observational and a theoretical perspective. It includes up-to- date discussions of the observational diagnostics of time- dependent stellar-wind structure, the theoretical understanding of the origin of such structures, and its consequences for the process of mass loss via stellar winds. The book presents some 40 invited papers, each followed by in-depth discussions which occupied nearly half of the workshop schedule. A round-table discussion summarizes the current state of affairs. This book is suitable for researchers and graduate students studying the radiation hydrodynamics of hot-star winds and related areas of research (e.g. astrophysical flows, turbulence).
