If you read this in high school (as many of us did), it may have shocked you--not bad for a tract written in 1729. It wouldn't be fair to those of you who haven't come across A Modest Proposal to reveal the particulars of the piece; suffice it to say that Saturday Night Live has nothing on Jonathan Swift! Swift's discussion of what Great Britain should do for his native impoverished Ireland is a model of political satire, absolutely consistent in tone and even now still sparkling in its clarity. The balance between, on the one hand, the utter seriousness of the matter in question and, on the other, the outrageousness of the remedy suggested is exquisite. A Modest Proposal is short and comes bound in this edition with several of Swift's other writings. This volume is an excellent introduction to the author of Gulliver's Travels (itself a masterwork) and to one of the world's premier satirical minds. What are you waiting for? --Michael Gerber
Book Description
Treasury of 5 shorter works by the author of Gulliver's Travels offers ample evidence of the great satirist's inspired lampoonery. Title piece plus The Battle of the Books, A Meditation upon a Broom-Stick, A Discourse Concerning the Mechanical Operation of the Spirit and The Abolishing of Christianity in England.
Customer Reviews:
Satire, not slippery slope.......2005-06-15
This read is pretty congested with 18th century European political and religious references, however it is a beautifully witty and priceless satire on the inconsistencies of human compassion.
Perhaps Swift was trying to evoke shock and heart wrenching disgust in readers in the hopes that the reader would see that England's economic exploitation of Dublin at the time was essentially just as damaging to society as something like government ordained cannibalism. Why is it that a reader would be so horrifically devastated by the idea of turning children into food in order to survive, yet remain callous and unconcerned with the fact that all people, adults and children alike, were in reality victims of a government which not only economically exploited the population to the point of utter poverty, but did not care even slightly that human beings were being turned into rotting corpses as a result?
A Modest Proposal - A *Modern* Proposal is more like it........2004-12-01
Swfit was perhaps the first major writer to introduce cannibalism into Western political thought, and incorporate it successfully into practical economics. I'm disturbed that Swfit's visionary solution to Thomas Malthus' omen about the dangers of overpopulation hasn't yet been seriously considered by world policymakers. That's just like politicians though, they do anything to get elected - hence another reason why extending the franchise to the lower rungs of the social hierarchy was a terrible mistake and should be revoked.
Pass the babies, please........2003-11-07
Satire is sadly lacking in today's society. Satire holds human vices and folly up for ridicule. Swift is not advocating the economy of eating babies, but maybe the fact that they are currently eating the body parts of aborted fetuses in China seems to steal something from Swift's modestly porposed satire-or maybe it is too outrageous seeming to be true.
Nevertheless, this is a brilliant work by a brilliant writer. It should be required reading. It is a pristine example of satire. Should we stop choking deaths by improvising starvation-- seek a new president by electing children? Satire is a genius' way of entertaining social change-literally. Although, sometimes though, even what once seemed impossibly satiric does not remain-which is proof of human folly.
the book.......2003-09-20
I think this book was quite interesting but very weird
HI everyone in kingston jamaica
To Mr. Westfall.......2001-05-23
Swifts "A Modest Proposal" was a well written glimpse of what the future would be like. It was written in the 1700s and presents disturbing views of what to do about homeless individuals and people in general. It is surprising that a lot of what the book predicted, as a means to prevent those horrific circumstances came true. In the "Modest Proposal" It presented a terrible vision of what may happen in the future if humans in general would not refrain from treating each other like animals. A lot of it's predicitons came true.
It presents disturbing views because it's sole purpose is to disturb us, so we do not repeat these terrible acts of torture in real life. It is hard to acknowlege the fact that a lot of these acts of human torture are practiced in the world today. I recommend this book be read in order to understand and prevent future torture in society today.

Book Description
Ecology is central to our understanding of how and why weeds invade and yet there are few books that link introductory weed science texts with more advanced ecology books. This textbook introduces ecological principles to students interested in weed science and weed management and includes examples from the weed and invasive species literature to illustrate the ecological principles discussed. It is suitable reading for final year undergraduates and graduates.

theory of everything for dummies.......2007-04-03
I have a long history with this book. I first read it when I was eleven and thought that I understood it completely. Almost ten years later and its ideas still resonate in my brain. I can't think of anyone who wrote about such complicated subjects with the same open-mindedness and lucidity and in the same unpatronizing, honest manner. Uspensky doesn't require superhuman concentration from the reader, like an encyclopedia, it gives you the answers fast. I still re-read chapters from it occasionally and im concistently amazed how well-written it is, even compared to Ouspensky's other work, like totally inaccesible Tertium Organum. It's an easy interesting read even for someone only superficially interested in philosiphy and mysticism.
Ouspensky wrote this before meeting Gurdjeff.......2006-06-26
It is a book I owed for many years and I have been reeding it many times. Written at the beguinning of the past century it is still very actual. I love the chapter on dreams and the story of the Buddha with the saffire eyes.
something to get you out of the grave and worse.......2003-11-23
Well, when I read childish comments some people post-- I can read and write too. And I wanted to set a counterweight against comments that make A New Model look funny.
Namely, the book does not deserve it. What am I about to say? The book is rather good, you see. That's it.
If you buy it-- I indeed don't say you must-- you will find yourself amply repayed for sacrificing few lousy dollars. When you die, and the balance will be set up for you-- FOR YOU-- you will be able to say quietly-- put that book on the positive side...
Of course, the guy is a little tiring with its constant repetition of how man gets to know that things are otherwise than he imagined and how man begins to see that his mental apparatus and results it gives and is capable of giving are questionable and how man is taught in these Schools to distrust his narrow opinions which he cherished so far etc. etc., comma, deep breath, but you will see yourself refunded for such painstaking advance when you get to the and. Pearls of simple mathematical insight used in what is generally NOT regarded as mathematical region in a way that convinces you that man was a genius, though mediocre writer (though be careful with this mediocrity so called, it is not as mediocre as it seems - just a style of tactful Muscovite who certainly - contrary perhaps to his contemporaries - was not in need to be flayed alive to come to some feelings). I can't promise you that you will spot them, why, I don't know what kind of person you are. But if you make yourself read it despite noticing anything worth reading there it will increase your capability of noticing such gems and it will count just that much more when you die-- and die you will-- to give only two reasons. I must say that the percent of people who WILL notice what I'm pointing out but are on the other side of the scale, recognizing the pearl but not appreciating it in too enthusiastic manner simply because they have already gone further will be considerably lower... but they don't need such reviews.

one of the best books I've read.......2003-08-12
I really liked this book. It was challenging and revealing with regards to aspects of human thought. What particularly struck me with this book, is the complete honesty that the author adopts when pursuing an area of interest to him. What this means is that there aren't many assumptions, and the author has no following judgment from assumption meaning he is open to all possibilities in circumstance. Because assumption isn't presented, it tends to rub off on you, and you learn with the refreshing vigour of a childs mind. The authors inquisitive nature coupled with this rare gift of being humbled in the face of mystery, and also looking at the way we think and perceive, has made him a receptacle for boundless knowledge. What will be taken from any situation will be maximal from these qualities alone, and his knowledge gained is presented here. Sometimes you hear of the "Human Factor" as a problem in certain environments, well there is no "human factor" here, just a presentation of pursued lines of thought as honestly recorded as can be. This is an excellent book, ...despite my ramblings!

Very Imaginative.......2006-05-20
I gave this book 5 stars because I love books that are based on the groundbreaking work of Christopher Dunn in his book "The Giza Power Plant".
The author is a physicist but he has enough imagination to believe in mythology, realizing that those myths and legends are based on reality at some level.
Farrell takes Dunn's theories about the pyramid being a machine to a new level. Based on the ideas of Zecharia Sitchin he proposes that the Giza complex was intended to be a military base and weapons platform before it was even constructed.
Because the author is a physicist he focuses mainly on the scientific aspects of his theory while perhaps neglecting the positive, spiritual aspects of how this mystical structure was used for positive purposes.
Farrell compares what happened over 12,000 years ago in Egypt to our own society today where most of the national budget is put into military projects.
However we may as well compare our current society to another planet as far as how similar the world was at that time to today.
While I enjoyed this book immensely I do not believe that the Giza complex was created to be used as a weapon of mass destruction.
Rather as the American psychic Edgar Cayce said about a similar technology on Atlantis it was the misuse of such awesome power that became destructive.
Cayce did say that the terrible crystal technology was used to create a death ray on Atlantis after the evil Atlanteans got control of it.
But that same ray was also used to power their flying saucers and for other things including spiritual things that aren't related to technology.
I guess it is possible that this same scenario played out in ancient Egypt. Those same evil forces may have gotten control of the pyramid machine.
Still this book raises many interesting questions.
After the pyramid machine was built what happened then ? Who was left in charge of it ?
So many questions. When will we ever know all of the answers ?
Obviously the state of the pyramid today is very much degraded from it's original state when it was covered with a polished, highly reflective white limestone and had either a gold or crystal cap stone.
I haven't read any books by Zecharia Sitchin yet but I'm planning to after reading this book. The book contains a lot of references to other occult science type books.
The number 3 is the most mysterious number in the universe and it comes into play with the pyramid.
The mathematical value 'pi' is 3 followed by a fractional number that continues out to an infinite number of decimal places.
There were also 27 pairs of resonators inside the pyramid machine at one time.

Technology.......2006-03-19
Perfect, something to think about and to consider.
After reading the book go and visit Egypt and look at the great Pyramid.
Captivating and well researched.......2004-03-06
Dr. Farrell does a brilliant job in this captivating and well researched book. He is obviously cautious in advancing ideas that no one has put forward before, but unlike most who speculate Dr. Farrell uses scientific evidence to lead the reader to new discoveries. He holds a doctorate from Oxford University and yet is able to write for the layman with an interest in the Pyramids. Hold on for a bumpy ride into new territory! Thanks Dr. Farrell
The Giza Death Star.......2002-11-07
Farrell theorized that the Great Pyramid was a terrible weapon of mass destruction, used by by a technological advanced ancient civilization in the mist of pre-history and sets today on the Giza Plateau disarmed but ready!
Farrell's technical civilization is the 'doner' civilization that provided the foundation of the Egyptian civilization that existed in the Nile Valley some 5,000 years ago.
What kind of civilization would have designed and built such an awsome weapon of mass destruction as envisioned by Farrell, and apparently used it with no hesitation against their fellow man? A civilization not unlike those that arose from the foundations and ashes of older extinct civilizations. A civilization subject to all the faults and foibles of human beings, hatred, love jealously and greed. No different than those in existance today and poised to destroy the world.
Farrell speculates, the "Great Pyramid was a phase congugate mirror(magic mirror of legends),and howitzer, utilizing Bohm's 'pilot wave' as a carrier to acelerate electromagnetic and acoustal waves to a target via harmonic interfermetry." Ferrell believes that the chambers and passageways of the Great Pyramid were used as a series of loops to generate and amplyfy these gravito-acoustical waves and direct them to their target.
Farrell finds traces of this ancient science he calls "Paleophysics" in the ancient and obsecure texts of Egypt.
If Ferrell's asumptions are correct, this ancient weapons system was the most powerful weapon ever to exist on Earth. Even today, with our advanced technology, the technology involved in the building of this weapon system can only exist in dreams. This is the grist for the mills of science fiction that dream of the theories of Nikola Tessla, The Montouk Project, the Philadelphia Experiment, and Area 51. These are the technologies our government is allways accused of developing in secret labortories and witholding from the public.
After reading the "Giza Death Star", readers will never be able to look at the Giza Plateau and its mysterious prymids and buildings in the same old way!
After reading the "Giza Death Star", find a copy of Hamlet's Mill and read it with a critical eye.
Sleep well tonight, keeping in mind that a government scientist in a weapons laboratory at an isolated location may be reading these same works!

Pretty good.......2004-09-01
Can Earth be hollow? Well, the truth to be known the theory that Earth has a core is exactly that-a theory. Noone ever got down or drilled down far enough to know how things really are down there. Most people accept it as fact without knowing anything about a subject and its a shame. I grew up in a country where talking about UFOs, aliens, Atlantis and many other "weird" things didn't immediately classify you as a nut.Even scientists were open about putting forth the various theories that would make people here rolls their eyes and yet Russia produced some of the best scientists to date. The moral of the story is this-be open minded. Nothing about science is written in stone. Now, for the book-its very convincing and easy to read. One thing i didn't like -too many geological and geophysical explanations. Could have been a lot shorter and just as good. Still, i enjoyed it.
Hollow Planets.......2004-07-08
The book was very enjoyable. It gave a great fight on how the earth could be hollow In which sounds (after reading This book) legitimate. If you don't believe it is hollow it is definitely an entertaining thought.
Website for this book.......2003-09-26
The author of this book has a website for it.
It is: WWW.HollowPlanets.com
[terrible material], pure and simple........2002-04-09
With very minimal support, the author attempts to posit theories that are absurd at best. I heartily recommend this book for conspiracy theorists.
Hollow Planets.......2002-02-08
Hollow Planets is a great survey of old & new science theories & evidence for a hollow earth with inner sun. Jan presents a "new seismology" (spherical earthquake dynamic patterns) with grafix of inner earth shells. He explains how mass doesn't create gravity fields in & around earth. Jan explores how moons & planets may also be hollow. He uses logic, with science evidence, speculation & intuition in articulate aray of inner earth potentials. I heard him interviewed on Art Bell & he has a great interactive website. Maybe 'hollow earth' can explain some mysteries of how earth spins, grows & makes life from within?! However, we need a natural geomeetry of cosmic evolution to integrate the inner earth in spiraling patterns, from DNA to galaxies. Keep on evolving our natural earth awareness!

Percy Seymour, The Birth of Christ.......2001-08-04
The bones of the book involve a nice piece of archeological detective work determining a surprisingly exact time for the birth by providing a knowledge of the night sky of the times and a sympathetic understanding of the relevant cultures and thier approach to Astronomy/Astrology.
Seymour introduces many other ideas alongside the title theme, which, for my money, are the greater rewards of the book. (the nature of faith, knowledge and academia, man's place in the world, the neccessity of humility and so on...)
He writes in an accessable and interesting manner, snappy and to the point, the central ideas are clearly expressed and easily navigated.
Seymour discusses how the Earth's magnetic atmosphere is influenced by the movement of the Moon and the interplay betwen the planets and the Sun and develops a highly feasable and quite convincing argument for the confluence of biological and planetary activity.
He also looks at the statistical evidence for astrology.
'The Birth of Christ' provides a compelling challenge to the idea that all astrology is a nonsense and having been presented with a sound rationale, based on the evidence of science, i feel obliged to be more open minded than before i read the book.
A Brillian Book.......2000-10-20
I have never before encountered a book which sifts the little bits of truth from all the chaff concerning astrology. Prof. Seymour takes the results of the statistical analysis of astrology done by previous scientests and applies their empirical results to a theory based to modern astrophysics. No froufrou astral influences here, this book is based on hard science.
Percy Seymour - Awesome and Controversial.......1999-12-16
Dr Percy Seymour tackles the most controversial subject of the last two millenniums - questioning some of the widely held beliefs of most of the modern world with regard to the birth of Christ. It's a scientific journey with awesome implications - an excellent read.

Book Description
A dusty plasma (or complex plasma) is a plasma (ionized gas) in which relatively massive particulates (dust grains) are embedded. Dusty plasmas occur widely in nature and show great industrial potential. This volume reports on the latest developments in dusty plasma physics, from astrophysical to space to laboratory environments. Theoretical and computer simulation advances cover topics such as linear instabilities, nonlinear wave phenomena, and plasma sheaths. Experimental results deal with exciting areas such as particle coagulation, plasma crystals, plasma voids, and microgravity experiments. Four comprehensive overview papers are presented on dusty plasmas in: astrophysics and cosmology, the solar system, and the ionosphere and its environment, as well as on the structure and dynamics of strongly non-ideal plasmas. In addition, eight topical reviews are included, as well as about 90 short research papers.
