      Book Description

“This is the first book to comprehensively summarize and extend cutting strategy research with a focus on transition economies. It provides a readable and refreshing overview for seasoned scholars and executives working in this field, as well as valuable insights for newcomers. The book combines theoretical rigor with up-to-date evidence on a highly relevant topic. Mike Peng is already one of the world’s leading strategy and management scholars working on transition and emerging economies, and this book adds significantly to his standing.” —John Child, Guiness Professor of Management Studies, University of Cambridge, England and Visiting Professor of International Management, Tel-Aviv University, Israel “The widespread shift from centrally planned to market-based economies has been the most profound change in the world economy since World War II. While a great deal of work has examined the broad economic implications of this transition, far less work has examined its implications for firms and managers. In this seminal work, Professor Peng draws on his extensive experience in transition economics, together with his knowledge of strategic management, to describe how firms in these economies can seize opportunities for growth and success.” —Jay Barney, Bank One Professor of Corporate Strategy, Ohio State University “A welcome contribution towards our understanding of firm – level issues in transition economies. A particular strength is the chapter-by-chapter consideration of how strategies vary depending on whether one is a state-owned enterprise, a privatized firm, an entrepreneurial start-up, or a foreign investor.” —Paul Beamish, Royal Bank Professor of International Business,University of Western Ontario, Canada A comprehensive account of transition economies from a firm strategy perspective. Thoroughly researched and thought provoking, this book is a most valuable tool for both academics and business executives seeking to operate in this promising yet uncertain territory. —Oded Shenkar, Ford Motor Professor of Global Management, Ohio State University and Professor of International Management and Tel-Aviv University, Israel Business Strategies in Transition Economies probes into the workings of business strategies in former socialist countries in East Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union, which are collectively called “transition economies.” It provides a rich and in-depth understanding of fundamental strategic issues confronted by domestic and foreign firms competing in these newly opened markets. Written by one of the leading scholars in the field, this timely book is comparative, interdisciplinary, and relevant. Focusing on firm-level issues confronting top executives acting as organizational strategists in transition economies, this book covers business strategies of 1.) state-owned enterprises, 2.) privatized and reformed firms, 3.) entrepreneurial start-ups, and 4.) foreign companies. Since transition economies, taken together, promise to be the world’s largest emerging markets in the 21st century, this book will be an invaluable resource for students, scholars, and managers seeking a better understanding of business challenges and opportunities in these markets.

        Book Description

This collection examines the design of financial systems for central and eastern European countries engaged in the transition to market-based economies. It highlights the need for better approaches to measuring performance and providing incentives in banking and for financial mechanisms to encourage private-sector growth. Written by leading European and North American scholars, the essays apply modern finance theory and empirical data to the development of new financial sectors.

Two broad themes emerge. The first is the critical relationship between reforms in the financial sector and in the real economy. Lending policies, which have a significant impact on business performance, need to discourage bad firm performance without prematurely liquidating potentially profitable enterprises. Conversely, the quality of firms influences the financial sector. If banks cannot find good credit risks, they cannot improve the quality of their portfolios. Until a critical mass of viable firms is built, equity markets will not develop sufficiently. The second theme is that the lack of fully developed markets and institutions may distort the policy outcomes predicted under models based on fully developed economies. Reliance on these models may therefore be inappropriate for transition economies.

This book investigates the concepts and instruments for managing change in companies striving toward a market orientation in Poland. The focus is on the identification of factors, which have led to the considerable success of certain corporations, in spite of the very dynamic environment in transformation countries since 1989. The analysis considers problems and solutions for all the relevant stakeholder relationships. Although the case study is largely based on Poland, the book also contains research papers on the economic, political, and social context of doing business in Central and Eastern Europe.

Alon and his contributors provide a comprehensive look at how economic transition affects marketings strategies across a wide range of industries, including telecommunications, the auto industry, the hospitality industry, the airline industry, textiles, cosmetics, and wine. In addition, they discuss the changing situation of joint ventures, collective enterprises, and state-owned businesses. Bringing divergent perspectives to bear from Hong Kong, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and China itself, the marketers and scholars who contributed to this volume have integrated research relating to economic transition with strategic considerations for more effective and competitive marketing plans. In addition to the industry-specific information, this volume includes chapters on entry barriers, e-commerce, market research, branding, and promotion.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on a niche market.......2003-05-30

The book provides excellent analysis of several Chinese industries. As a CTO of a software development company I found the sections regarding Chinese e-Commerce and web sites trends insightful. The author covers the dot com effects on Chinese computer consumption and its impact on US markets. I strongly recommend this book to anyone looking to gain a well researched (and well written) perspective on Chinese businesses and behavior.

                Product Description

Is there a new development paradigm? This volume brings together a number of studies on the major issues of adjustment as they apply to countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The authors draw on economic, political and institutional theory in order to appraise and compare the development models, identify the determinants of sustained growth, apply the new development concepts to the case of MENA countries, and suggest viable options to reduce the political and social constraints to reform. Four sets of issues are vividly highlighted throughout the book: the issue of integration into the global economy and the speed with which foreign trade should be liberalized; the issue of divestiture and the merits of following various privatization strategies; the issue of state intervention in the context of liberalization and private sector orientation; and the issue of democratization and the political economy of reform. Contributors: Fikret Adaman, Nazih Ayubi, Driss Ben Ali, Amar Bhattacharya, Ha-Joon Chang, Byron Gangnes, Giacomo Luciani, Seiji Naya, Jeffrey B. Nugent, John M. Page, Jr., Raed Safadi, Mona Said, Khaled Sakr, Murat Sertel.

                    Book Description

The transition process of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which started more than a decade ago, has been the focus of much attention for both practitioners and scholars. Few studies however, address management issues involved in the transition process and no study has, until now, assessed the strategies and tactics which individual companies have pursued over the past decade as part of their adaptation process. This book fills this gap and will leave the reader with a better understanding of the adaptation process at single firm level.

                        Book Description

All civilizations, ancient and modern, are founded on agriculture. In this fascinating account of one of the most fundamental aspects of humankind's march from prehistory to the present day, the author considers the evidence for the origin and evolution of agriculture in various parts of the world and presents a balanced view based on the archaeology, botany, genetics, ecology and anthropology of domesticates and their wild relatives. The book describes the basic agricultural systems that emerged from areas yielding traces of the earliest plant and animal domestication and considers their drastic modification in recent times. The present situation is reviewed and the possible risks of a system that now relies on a relatively small number of species to supply the majority of our food are discussed in a concluding chapter. This book will interest professionals in the fields of agriculture, archaeology, and anthropology.

                            Book Description

In this first study of Doris Lessing's science fiction, Fishburn devotes a chapter to each of Lessing's seven novels. Her major argument is that Lessing uses these novels to change our perception of reality by describing worlds that are simultaneously similar to and different from our own. Of particular importance is the fact that each narrator, by functioning as an intermediary or guide-leader, helps skeptical readers to experience the alien worlds of Lessing's imagination. As she traces the development of these seven narrators, Fishburn shows how they eventually fulfill the role of the idealized author Lessing described in "The Small Personal Voice." In examining how these texts challenge us to change, Fishburn discusses the influence of Marxist and Sufi thought on Lessing and also points out the striking similarity betwen Lessing's philosophy of wholeness and the discoveries of modern physics.

5 out of 5 stars About The Narrative Universe:.......2004-01-17

The Narrative Universe by Gianluca Bocchi and Mauro Ceruti is fascinating to read. It is indeed a remarkable feature of modern science, from high energy physics to chemistry and biology, that we have moved to a different view of nature that emphasises the narrative element levels of observation. Gianluca Bocchi and Mauro Ceruti present a global and impressive view of this narrative aspect starting with mythology and the early history of humanity and going from there to biology, physics, and chemistry. The Narrative Universe is a unique book. It will be of great interest for everyone who cares about the memory of the past as well as humanity's position in the universe.

A remarkable work of transdisciplinary scholarship. The Narrative
Universe is a rich and fascinating work that offers a new perspective
on evolution that emphasizes the importance of human choices and
actions, and the possibility for creating a partnership world.

Drawing from biology, complexity science, cultural history, cosmology, linguistics, mythology, anthropology, as well as the history of religions, literature, and twentieth century film, Bocchi and Ceruti have crafted our time's most comprehensive and compact survey of contemporary science. Their choice of scientists is unfailingly accurate, and their presentation is simultaneously thorough and clear. Their book will be most appreciated by individuals who are outside the world of science, but have on occasion wondered what the excitement is all about. Here, in a single volume, is a record of most of our century's greatest scientific triumphs.

The Narrative Universe is a wondrous book, whose very title is the message. The authors takes us down the highways and byways of the world of knowledge, to tell us that we live not only in a contingent universe but are engaged in the creation of contingent knowledges (the plural here is
Important). We are forced to think about assumptions we never realized needed to be questioned. It is a resolutely hopeful, creative work about a creative universe. It is at the same time a very rigorous exercise - science at its best.

Immanuel Wallerstein, SUNY Binghampton, author, The end of the world as we know it. Social science for the 21st century

Reading The Narrative Universe was a real pleasure. Ceruti and Bocchi have written a challenging, brilliant book that is required reading for anybody who wishes to participate in the intellectual revolution through which we are now living.

Jerome Bruner, New York University, author, Actual Minds, Possible Worlds

A marvelous book in several senses: I marvel at Bocchi and Ceruti's erudition, and at the grace with which they apply it. Here we have a masterful narrative well told about the history of consciousness, from the earliest dawnings of human awareness to the latest reflections on evolutionary theory about our evolution.
