If you are in the accounting profession, stop reading and buy.......2007-03-08
This was the very first book I ever read on proposals. To tell the truth, it sat on my shelf for a good three months before I opened it. Who wants to read about proposals? From the moment I cracked opened the book until I put it down there was quite a bit that Kaye Vivian had thought about that I hadn't. The process she lays out is alone worth the price of this book.
A must read for anyone writing proposals (for accounting firms).

Book Description
"The Executive's Guide to Controlling Health Care and Disability Costs is much more than a standard guide to cost containment techniques. Rather, it brings together the achievements of leading organizations, the most current research, and a strategic vision incorporating quality and value imperatives, continuous learning and improvement, and information-driven action commitments. The authors show the opportunity for improvement is great regardless of the direction of change in state and national public policies." Mary Jane England, MD President Washington Business Group on Health "A groundbreaking book offering both innovative strategies and concrete solutions for employers. A must for any executive interested in regaining control over health and disability costs." William D. Hager President and Chief Executive Officer National Council on Compensation Insurance "This book integrates the key ingredients for successful control of health care and workers' compensation costs: active, hands-on management by the employer, attention to the human beings involved, an effective organizational culture, and the same care and attention as given to quality." Douglas F. Stevenson Executive Director National Council of Self-Insurers "The Executive's Guide to Controlling Health Care and Disability Costs injects a much needed dash of optimism into a pessimistic broth. We all need to be reminded that there are things we can do to manage this problem and that waiting for Washington to solve it is simply not enough." John W. Rowe President and Chief Executive Officer New England Electric System "Management of their own employee health plan ranks among the most significant challenges facing the 1990s executive. The authors explain managed care and outline all the critical associated issues in an uncommonly insightful, nonjargonistic manner. The chapter on the new importance of health care information systems is essential reading." Brian S. Gould, MD Senior Vice President United Health Care Corporation
Customer Reviews:
Executive's Guide is top shelf resource for 24-hour plans.......1997-05-06
Despite the insurance industry's tendency to tout integrated disability and medical management plans, there remains a dearth of available information to guide the interested business manager through the process. The Executive's Guide to Controlling Health Care and Disability Costs: Strategy-Based Solutions provides an excellent overview and in-depth treatment of why companies should pursue an integrated approach toward disability and health care management, and how exactly they should do it

Book Description
Drylands, which cover over half of the world's area, have witnessed rapid development, exploitation and change with the discovery of mineral reserves, urbanization, and population growth. Environmental management is critical to the conservation and sustainable use of resources. Now available in paperback, this comprehensive book offers a systematic study of the physical nature of drylands and the history of human response to and uses of these harsh landscapes. Detailed case studies including urban as well as pastoral drylands from California to Soviet Central Asia, the Middle East, the Sahara, and Australia contrast different management approaches and problems.

this white boy's got soul.......2004-07-27
It's unusual to find fiction that is elegant without being pretentious. These stories are quirky, imaginative, wonderfully crafted and really quite profound. Malone has a Texan's gift for dialogue. He writes with an unusual, just-right mix of magic and realism - and without a wasted word. But it is the emotional power of the stories that ultimately makes the book memorable. These stories have stayed with me since I bought the book in Fort Worth while driving through Texas almost a decade ago. This book deserves more attention and so does Malone. This guy's the real thing. He's won awards for every book he's published but seems to get overlooked by people in New York. Esquire editors? Are you listening?

The Original Columbia Plateau.......2002-01-25
As exemplified in song by Woodie Guthrie when he extolled the virtues of the great dams on the Columbia River and the subsequent development of irrigated agriculture, man's focus on the Columbia Plateau has been on how it can serve him. Now a new book has emerged that explores the geology, soils, flora and fauna of the region and its shrub-steppe ecosystems. This book serves as primer for all who would seek to understand these natural systems...a starting point for further exploration, both on the ground and in the regional libraries. The book is a gentle reminder of the natural richness of this region and the need to preserve the remaining habitat for future generations so that the land can continue to serve man, but in a different way, enriching our lives through the knowledge that soils derived from the harsh reality of volcanic eruption in conjunction with simple associations of grasses and shrubs can form the basis for a complex and enduring living system.

Book Description
Dryland degradation and desertification now affect almost a billion people around the world. Tragically, the biological resources and productivity of millions of acres of land are lost to desertification each year because people remain unaware of strategies and techniques that could improve yields, reduce risk, and begin healing the world's deserts. A Guide for Desert and Dryland Restoration is the first book to offer practical, field-tested solutions to this critical problem.
Author David Bainbridge has spent more than 25 years actively involved in restoring lands across the American Southwest. A Guide for Desert and Dryland Restoration presents the results of his years of fieldwork, as well as research and experience from scientists and practitioners around the globe.
The book discusses the ecology of desert plants, explores the causes of desertification and land abuse, and outlines the processes and procedures needed to evaluate, plan, implement, and monitor desert restoration projects. It sets forth economical and practical field-tested solutions for understanding site characteristics, selecting and growing plants, and ensuring that they survive with a minimal amount of water and care. Each chapter represents a guide to a critical topic for environmental restoration; extensive photographs, diagrams and drawings give detailed information for immediate application, and additional resources are included in appendixes.
A Guide for Desert and Dryland Restoration is the first comprehensive book focused on restoring arid regions, and clearly demonstrates that arid lands can be successfully rehabilitated. In addition to restorationists, the book will be an invaluable resource for anyone working in arid lands, including farmers, ranchers, gardeners, landscapers, outdoor recreation professionals, and activists.
Customer Reviews:
Bainbidge 2007 New hope for arid lands.......2007-09-21
Excellent practical advice on all aspects of arid land ecological restoration. I have no doubt that the copy on my reference shelf will soon grow dog-eared through use. I strongly recommend this book to restoration ecologists and environmental consultants seeking to make their services more useful and cost effective
