3 out of 5 stars Its a good book but not the best.......2001-11-01

I found it very good in explaining what are the tests and how are they beneficial for the people who are going to take it and as well as who are going to give the tests.

It would have been more useful if it had more practice questions.

But i know you would enjoy reading it.

    Book Description

An average breeder will produce one stakes winner for every 48 matings. But if you know how to do it, you can, on average, produce one stakes winner from every eight matings. This is the book that tells you how it is done. Estes' formula for breeding a stakes winner is based on sound genetic principles and is statistically reliable. He debunks the myths of horse breeding and explains in simple language the precise method of dramatically improving the odds of breeding (or buying) a stakes winner.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great.......2004-07-29

I enjoy some of the facts, thoughts, and ideas that were in the book, BUT there was nothing there about breeding that 99% of anyone could figure out. All his 'formula' is is basically breed a mare that earned and race very well with a stallion that earned and race very well, and you PROBABLY will get a foal that will earn and race very well.

To be frank, well DUH. Breeders have been doing that for CENTURIES. I don't think there is a breeder out there who does not take his best mare and try to breed her to the best stallion they possibly can. I might why would you do anything else?

Mr. Estes made some wonderful contributions to the Thoroughbred breed and his AEI charts are interesting and a good tool, but his breeding advice is not that great.

Still, it was an easy read and was quite interesting, but I was hoping for something more in-depth, like possible pedigree factors, different lines having different traits, not just 'breed a racehorse to a racehorse and you should get a racehorse'.

2 out of 5 stars The Estes Formula for Breeding Stakes Winners.......1999-12-31

After reading Mr. Joseph Estes's book, "The Estes Formula for Breeding Stakes Winners", I was very disappointed with its content and would not recommend it for the established Thoroughbred or Standbred breeder looking to improve their chances of producing a stakes winner with existing breeding stock.

The focus of the author is purchasing broodmare prospects that are the cream of the racing crop that are often overpriced and out of reach for the average breeder. It is unfortunate that the information provided within this book has been known for decades, "Breed the Best Mares to the Best Stallions and hope for the Best." Mr. Estes attempted to support this statement using the Average Earnings Index (AEI) and page upon page of statistics. A major drawback with the book is the author uses a very small percentage of the overall horse population in his examples. It was also disappointing that the author used only the best race mares and offspring from the 1930's and 40's to prove his point.

In summary, the book relatively easy to read and may be helpful for the first time owner looking to start a breeding operation but lacks information for improveing your chances of producing a stakes winner from existing breeding stock. The breeding of racehorses is still a gamble where Mother Nature is the only one who can predict the outcome. Don't be decieved by the book's title, this book provides nothing new and only attempts to support the statement, "Breed the Best Mare to the Best Stallion and hope for the Best".

    Book Description

In this Cinderella tale from the Southwest, each of the sisters has an encounter with a magical hawk, but the heroine is kind to the bird and receives a gold star on her forehead. Her spiteful stepsisters go in search of their own gold stars but are rewarded with a donkey's ear and a cow's horn. You can imagine which sister the prince marries!

The cloth version is in its third printing with more than 15,000 sold.

Joe Hayes (Santa Fe, New Mexico) is one of America's premier storytellers. Nationally acclaimed for her folkloric style, Gloria Perez died of cancer before completing the illustrations, but she passed the task to her daughter Lucia Angela Perez (Fort Worth, Texas). The transition is wonderfully seamless.

Marta C.Valdez-Menchaca; Grover J. Whitehurst. ?Accelerating Language Development through Picture Book Reading: a Systematic Extension to Mexican Day Care. Developmental Psychology, 28.6(1992):1106 Hayes, Joe. Estrellita de Oro Little Gold Star. Illus. El Paso Texas: Cinco Puntos Press, 2000

A Cultural Wonder Gold Star is a picture book that takes the classic tale of Cinderella and adds the Mexican heritage to it. Arcìa is the young heroin of the story. She begs her father to marry her neighbor, Margarita because Margarita is so nice to her. Finally the father agrees and marries her. Margarita turns out to be a bad person who only cares for her two daughters. Arcìa?s father buys all the girls a sheep so that they can raise and take care of them so that later they can shear and sell them. Each girl takes her sheep to bathe at a river where they meet a hawk. Arcìa is nice to the hawk and receives a gold star on her head but the other two sisters are mean to the hawk. One gets a donkey ear while the other gets a greenhorn. When it is time for the ball the sisters cover their obscenities and go. Since Arcìa doesn?t have any shoes or nice clothes, she goes and watches from a window. As in most Cinderella tales, the Prince goes on a hunt, but this prince goes on a hunt for the girl with the golden star. Arcìa marries the prince, and they live happily ever after. Joe Hayes retells the classic story of Cinderella with a Mexican her flair. On the last page of the book Hayes tells us that Cinderella was very popular in the mountain communities of New Mexico. This version, he says, retains most of the traditional details. This includes the golden star on the forehead. Hayes says that the symbolic reward of the golden star on the forehead appears almost in every episode, but the star is more central in his tale. Also in most traditional versions, a fish takes the wool, the sheep is slaughtered and his intestines are stolen. Hayes says that these details where a bit too gruesome for a picture book. The blessed virgin (the fairy godmother) who usually guides the girl does not appear in Hayes?s story. He says that he based his story on a plot form that doesn?t require her intervention. This book combines the Mexican culture and a classic fairy tale. The wonderful illustrations add life to the story. Mother and daughter painted the story illustrations. Gloria Osuna Perez did the first three pages because she was sick with ovarian cancer. Her daughter, Lucia Angela Perez, did the last twelve illustrations in honor of her mother. The oil painted illustrations show a part of Mexican culture. Being panted by the Perezs they put their heritage and soul into the illustrations. Any child will enjoy these wonderful drawings. I enjoyed this rendition of Cinderella. Arcìa didn?t need a godmother-like character to help her. She did it with her own will and personality. The book deals more with the human spirit and the power it has. Arcìa is kind hearted and doesn?t think about herself. Even when Margarita doesn?t give her new shoes or nice gowns, Arcìa doesn?t complain or show any remorse. Her kind heart is what gets the golden star put upon her forehead. This book can be used to help young children learn. By using Spanish or any other language in reading a child can learn and interact more with the picture book . The book is written in both Spanish and English, which helps readers easily learn a new language. Foreign languages are being taught in elementary schools and they are required to get into most colleges. If a child is taught young, he will have a better grasp on the language when he is older. This picture book would be a good way for a child to be introduced to another culture and language. I enjoyed reading this book. Seeing Cinderella written from Mexican heritage is educational as well as enjoyable. The illustrations are as wonderful as the story.

This children's classic is beautifully written and illustratedin both English and Spanish, which makes it truly unique andextraordinary. Many books are translated into other languages from English but this book was written in both lanuages and reflects the culture of the southwestern United States and Mexico.

I am sharing this reading experience with my four year old granddaughter. I highly recommend you share it with a child that you love.

    Book Description

This lyrical book is Estrellita's farewell song to her island home. The gentle words paint a picture of her beloved environment in vivid strokes, filling our minds with images of, in Estrellita's charmed words, the "little island/darling little piece of my heart!"

Estrellita's beautiful tribute is framed by the window of the gigantic airplane that carries her away from her beloved world that will forever be framed in the window of her mind's eye. She brings to us the rooster calling to her in the morning, the coquí appearing in her bed, and the people that populate her lovely countryside.

Estrellita's song of her home gives readers aged 3 to 7 a peek at her world, introducing them to a love of the island and the love of a home. Estrellita gives a magical taste of her island, leaving us hungry for another read.
