The Audit Society: Rituals of Verification
Michael Power Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0198296037 |
Book Description
Since the early 1980s there has been an explosion of auditing activity in the United Kingdom and North America. In addition to financial audits there are now medical audits, technology audits, value for money audits, environmental audits, quality audits, teaching audits, and many others. Why has this happened? What does it mean when a society invests so heavily in an industry of checking and when more and more individuals find themselves subject to formal scrutiny? The Audit Society argues that the rise of auditing has its roots in political demands for accountability and control. At the heart of a new administrative style internal control systems have begun to play an important public role and individual and organizational performance has been increasingly formalized and made auditable. Michael Power argues that the new demands and expectations of audits live uneasily with their operational capabilities. Not only is the manner in which they produce assurance and accountability open to question but also, by imposing their own values, audits often have unintended and dysfunctional consequences for the audited organization.Customer Reviews:

ASIN: 1881052273 |
Book Description
The challenge of the '90s is to create sustainable societies in which business and government can satisfy our current needs without diminishing the prospects for future generations. Business managers today are seeking guidance in the new ways of thinking that are called for to meet this challenge. This book takes a major step in that direction by helping business people identify what can be done to reduce the impact of their companies on the environment. It shows how to systematically set priorities and create an action plan for implementing improvements. It will also help sell an impact reduction program to top management. In contrast to the current practice of "compliance auditing, " a process focused on meeting governmental regulations, this Elmwood Institute guide shows how to conduct an "eco-audit" - a complete examination of an organization in relation to its long-term ecological sustainability. Such an audit scrutinizes every aspect of the organization and its operations, including product design and manufacture, management techniques, corporate culture and goals. EcoManagement is the first book to provide a comprehensive and practical guide to the new era of business ecological responsibility. It features a framework for companies planning to design their own audits, and offers thirteen checklists to guide managers through the audit process, covering such topics as energy, materials, wastes, finance, marketing, transportation, and international business relations.

Management Accounting in the Digital Economy
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0199260389 |
Book Description
There is mounting evidence that the deployment of digital technologies by enterprises affects not just their functioning in economic terms, but also mobilizes broader social, institutional, and organizational effects. At a technical level, digitization directly influences organizational processes. Notions of its potential also define managerial pursuits and the search for enhanced organizational performance. Inevitably, digitizatoin impacts the form, substance and provenance of internal accounting information with attendant consequences on the behaviour and actions of decision makers. Knowledge about the influence of digital technologies on management accounting thinking processes and practices is starting to emerge. A variety of issues relating to pricing strategies, cost management and control mechanisms are evident. But the implications for the field are far wider. Aspects of trust, organizational power, cultural shifts, strategization, convergence of product and information elements, and newly perceived contingencies between information dimensions and contextual factors are altering management accounting systems, structures, thinking, and practices. This book explores these and other issues along different planes of reference. The first part of the book consists of chapters that discuss accounting and management control systems and wider structural shifts connected with the advent of digital technologies. In the second section, the contributors analyse organizationally focused shifts occurring concomitantly alongside digital transformations in the economy. The final part of the book comprises chapters that consider avenues of accounting transformation that may be pursued in specific contexts both in terms of practice and as concepts that afford insights into possible management accounting futures. Broadly, the fourteen chapters of this book bring together practical commentaries, conceptual frameworks, and theoretical argumentation and explore wider narratives regarding the interface between management accounting and the digital economy. Management Accounting in the Digital Economy will be of interest to scholars, advanced students, and practitioners concerned with the management accounting and control implications of the growing ubiquity of digital technologies across organizational spaces and economic platforms.

Transformation of Plants and Soil Microorganisms (Biotechnology Research)
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521450896 |
Book Description
Over the past fifty years plant breeders have achieved impressive improvements in yield, quality and disease resistance. These gains suggest that many more modifications might be introduced if appropriate genes can be identified. Current DNA techniques allow the construction of transgenic plants and this important new book reviews the current state of knowledge. A team of leading researchers provide in-depth reviews at the cutting edge of technology for laboratory techniques for the transformation of important soil microorganisms and recalcitrant plants of economic value. The book is divided into three sections: soil microorganisms; cereal crops; and industrially important plants. The most effective methods used to date are compared, and their merits and limitations discussed. Some chapters emphasise case studies and applications. In cases where obstacles remain to be overcome, an overview of progress to date is given. The book will serve as a general guide and reference tool for those working on transformation in microbiology and plant science.
