Book Description
Why do gardeners start plants from seed instead of just buying a flat of seedlings from their local nursery? Necessity. Seedlings of unusual or exotic plants simply aren't available at garden stores, but they are available in seed. Then there's the cost factor. A few packets of seeds are much cheaper than dozens upon dozens of seedlings. And finally there's the plants' health to consider. Plants grown from seed get a healthy start that can almost guarantee you a magnificent display in your garden. The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom will teach you everything you need to know to germinate and grow more than 500 types of flowering plants. For every plant listed you'll find precise information on whether it will do well in your part of the country; how to sow seeds indoors and outdoors; when to transplant indoor seedlings out in the garden; what light, soil, and spacing requirements are necessary; general plant care; when you can expect the plants to flower; how to encourage more blooms; and how to propagate your plants by cutting, division, layering, or detaching runners.
The book also features more than 500 full-color flower photographs. A quick-reference chart outlines bloom time, color, height, and site requirements for more than 1,000 species, making this book an indispensable reference for planning and planting fabulous gardens.

starting flowers.......2007-08-07
I used this book extensivly this spring for starting all my flowers and veggie. I found it easy to use and most flowers etc were listed. Great book for my library and I will use it in the future for sure.
Excellent.......2007-02-26
This book is an excellent reference book describing seeds.
Giving the botanical name and common name. Most helpful with information on germination and were the seeds will grow best. And the the section that has thumbnail pictures
is excellent. The ease of using the paperback is all so great.
Great book!.......2007-01-04
Bought this for my wife and she loves it! She was reading this book like a novel. Provides good information and tips on a wide range of flowers. Bought this book due to good reviews as well!
Excellent book, but NOTE..........2006-04-07
This book is exactly what I was looking for-- a no-nonsense, complete description of how to start each of the many kinds of seeds that I can never resist buy, collecting, or trading for.
One thing that people should note, though: the plants are listed in alphabetical order by their Latin names. There is an appendix that has the common names and what the Latin name is for each, but I can't imagine doing that for every single plant-- what a pain! I like to know both Latin and common names, so I was fine with this system. But for someone who's only familiar with the common names of plants, this book is going to be a lot harder to use. (On the bright side, learning the Latin names can be a lot of fun, so if you're at all open to the idea, go for it!)
Really and truly useful.......2004-08-10
When a friend recently asked me to suggest a book that would tell her the soil preferences of different flowers, I knew exactly what she needed. The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom has all the answers. In addition to concise profiles of 500 bloomers, there's a handy gallery of color photographs and my favorite section, a 50-page chart that lists major and minor species along with their bloom times, colors, and cultural requirements. This book is designed to be useful, and it is!

Another a top-notch reference.......2000-10-21
Another a top-notch reference from Thomas DeBaggio for herb- gardening enthusiasts. This offers detailed information and instructions for those who want to learn how to grow their own herb plants from seeds, cuttings or division. He covers a variety of herbs, from basic kitchen staples to more exotic types. Along with his book on basil, "Growing Herbs ... An Adventure in Small Miracles" has a choice spot on my bookshelf.

Customer Reviews:
Use the Internet.......2001-10-06
Have a new house and wanted to spruce up the lawn. We were told so many different tips that this book seemed like it would set us straight. Well, the first chunk of the book covers the anatomy of grass. I suppose it's useful to know, but was very detailed. The author even goes into detail on distinguishing grasses from one another, but admits you'd need to sit in your yard with a magnifying glass. We were told to use lime to raise the PH and spur growth. There is NO MENTION of lime in this book at all. My advice: Surf the Web. Bob Vila has a good site and talks about lawncare--including the use of lime.

Sometimes reading like a botany class textbook, this volume is for gardeners who want to follow their plants from conception onward; it is also a great source for those wanting to start a nursery or catalogue seed business. Experts Terry and Mark Silber provide a wealth of information on how to propagate seeds and how to detect the difference between "responsible" catalogues and irresponsible ones, as well as illuminating sidebars about often baffling subjects such as soil pH and the importance of those hard-to-remember botanical names. The book is organized into general directions about germinating seeds--chapter subheadings include 'choosing the right container' and 'buying plants locally.' This general lesson is followed by focused directions for herbs and vegetables, and finally a specific guide to growing 39 vegetables and 48 herbs.
Not for the beginner or the halfway committed gardener, this is nevertheless illuminating reading for someone who wants to understand the garden's life cycle. And while I was taught by my grandmother that growing from seeds meant you were a "glutton for punishment," the Silbers don't seem like masochists at all--they just seem thoroughly immersed in the complexities of plant life. --Emily White
Book Description
An indispensable, wonderfully motivating growing guide, based on three decades of gardening experience, from the cofounders of Hedgehog Hill Farm in Sumner, Maine.
The Silbers tell us how to go about searching for just the right seeds, plants, and information; how to determine the number of plants we need; how to set up a germinating area; how to seed and transplant; how to use cold frames and other methods of "hardening off" our seedlings. They take us into the garden and explain how to evaluate soils and break up top growth. We learn about setting out plants; about direct seeding in mulched areas and open ground; about weeding, watering, and fertilizing. They share their wisdom about controlling insect damage and battling plant diseases; about accommodating animals while protecting crops; about harvesting, fall cleanup, and collecting, saving, and storing seeds from our own gardens.
Specific, detailed instructions are given for growing 37 vegetables--alphabetically arranged from asparagus to turnips--and 51 herbs, from angelica to woad. Well-organized charts make it easy to find essential information quickly, and drawings and photographs provide visual direction. Conveniently located sidebars give us guidance on such topics as growing hot peppers, planting mesclun, making sauerkraut, braiding onions, blanching cauliflower, growing moth-repellent herbs, making herb tempura and vinegars, and crystallizing flowers.
Here is a book guaranteed to inspire us to dig into the gardening catalogues and then into the earth to begin the adventure of producing our very own bountiful harvest.

Growing Herbs and Vegetables from Seed to Harvest.......2001-06-22
I read this book and I use it as a reference for my job. I am a horticulture Specialist with Lincoln University Cooperative Extension. I received some great tips like cutting the seedlings of onions and scallions in half after three weeks of growth to help them come back stronger. The pictures and tips are wonderful. The passion that the authors have for gardening definitely show through in this book. This book is great for the beginner as well as the advanced gardener.

A very good text for the beginning seed starter.......1998-02-14
Even though this text was written when i was a baby, I inherited this book from my mother and its tattered pages are constantly referenced in my library. I have texts from Bubel, as well as Powell, on the same subject matter, but I enjoy this author's nonsensical approach to the subject matter (and her personal experiences in gardening), as well as the wonderful diagrams of seedling leaves on the inside covers!

Book Description
Topological defects are generic in continuous media. In the relativistic quantum vacuum they are known as cosmic strings, in superconductors as quantized flux lines, and in superfluids, low-density atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and neutron stars as quantized vortex lines. This collection of articles by leading scientists presents a modern treatment of the physics of vortex matter, mainly applied to unconventional superconductors and superfluids but with extensions to other areas of physics.
