4 out of 5 stars A good book for beginners who want to know the basics.......2000-12-31

This is an excellent book for beginners in accounting or business who need to understand how accounting works and what the basic principles of accounting are about. It is an extremely easy book to read ( I tell people it takes less than 50 minutes to read the entire book), yet very informative. If you want the basics of accounting, this is a good, quick book. If you are looking for depth of theory and practice, get a more thorough book.

        Book Description

Origins of the Organic Agriculture Debate takes an historical look at two contrasting streams of ideas. The first view comprises the flow of ideas in chemistry and biology that have created the conditions for modern medicine, modern food production and the biotechnological revolution. The second view is the vitalist reaction to the rise of modern science and the resulting rejection of modern agriculture.Contemporary proponents of organic agriculture and the anti-genetically modified food movement believe that pure food confers some special kind of virtue both on those who produce it and those who consume it. They fail to acknowledge that organic chemistry, genetics, and molecular biology have been as essential to twentieth century advances in agriculture such as plant breeding, and are instrumental to ensuring that there is enough food for everyone.Origins of the Organic Agriculture DebateBegins with an exploration of the factors involved in our modern fear of technology, a fear which forms the foundation for anti-technology beliefs and practices.Argues that vitalism is at the core of an array of contemporary anti-science and anti-technology movements.Helps readers fully understand the ferocity with which certain beliefs about homeopathic medicine and the organic are held against all evidence to the contrary.Explains the history of nitrogen in life and in agriculture, countering myths of scarce resources and beliefs about the sufficiency of organic nitrogen to feed the world 's population.Purports that technology creates resources, debunking the idea that resources are natural, fixed and finite.Updates and clarifies issues discussed in the author 's previous works: A Theory of Technology (1985), Agriculture and Modern Technology (2001) and The Environment, Our Natural Resources and Modern Technology (2002).We need to better understand the forces of scientific and technological change if we are to control the negative elements of these forces, continue to advance the development of science and technology, and facilitate fuller participation in the benefits of our advancing capability to further the human endeavor. Origins of the Organic Agriculture Debate will provide a basis for this understanding..

4 out of 5 stars A Thought Provoking Book - A review by John Purcell, Ph.D........2004-08-19

Thomas DeGregori has written a thought-provoking book that explores the historical foundations of the fundamental views toward science that some advocates of organic agriculture harbor. In his book, "Origins of the Organic Agriculture Debate" (Iowa State Press, 2004), DeGregori asserts that 'vitalism', the eighteenth century belief in the mystical nature of life that "set it off from the non-living world" is at the core of the organic movement. A fundamental tenet of such beliefs is that these vital elements cannot be explained by science. DeGregori lays out how scientific advances in chemistry and biology have demonstrated that vitalism was just a form of mysticism that should hold no place in serious scientific circles. He maintains that still today, anti-science and anti-technology sentiments fuel the organic movement's disdain for modern agricultural methodologies.

The author uses organic agriculture's view on fertilizers as one example of vitalism's link to current organic practices. DeGregori points out that the use of organic fertilizers are a necessary component in organic agriculture as only these molecules can deliver the 'life force' necessary to promote growth. Because of this belief, nitrogen based fertilizers are not allowed in organic agriculture. Obviously this runs counter to decades of practical experience that have clearly demonstrated that nitrogen based fertilizers are an extremely valuable tool for agricultural productivity that help address the massive food demands of a growing population. This is just one example cited by the author of how organic agriculture eschews modern, efficient agricultural practices for purely ideological reasons.

DeGregori asserts that the rejection of modern science and technology lies at the heart of the organic movement's rejection of biotechnology as a tool for agriculture. His belief is that anti-modernists blame science and technology for many current environmental and social ills and see biotechnology as just the latest technology waiting to unleash its horror on the planet. The author stresses the irony of such a position when it is science and technology that have provided the advances necessary to keep a population of "six billion who are living longer, are better fed and are in better health than ever before". He clearly rejects the "romanticizing" of the past and lays out cogent arguments on how an unhealthy level of reverence for the past is problematic when it impacts social policy decisions.

Thomas DeGregori has used an examination of the origins of the organic agriculture movement as a gateway into a discussion on the merits of using modern technology versus a retreat into the methods of the past. He lands squarely on the side of technological progress, arguing "modern science and technology gives us the opportunity, as never before, to create a better world for all".

        Book Description

Star-gazing with binoculars is rewarding and, for many, a lifelong passion! Patrick Moore has painstakingly researched Exploring the Night Sky with Binoculars to describe the optimal use of binoculars for astronomical observation. He explains basic astronomy and the selection of binoculars, then goes on to discuss the stars, clusters, nebulae and galaxies that await the observer. He charts the sky seen from the northern and southern hemispheres season by season, providing detailed maps of all the constellations. In addition, the reader can also observe the Sun, Moon, planets, comets and meteors. New to this Fourth Edition are: An improved presentation of all star maps, rendering a clear impression of what the night sky really looks like; planetary data through 2010; and advice on eclipse watching, including total eclipses of the sun. With many beautiful illustrations, this handbook will be helpful and encouraging to casual observers and those cultivating a more serious interest. The enjoyment of amateur astronomy is now available to everybody!

        3 out of 5 stars Unnecessary detail.......2006-06-11

If you are looking for a beginner book with a goal of recognizing the constellations, there are better choices (consider "The Stars, a new way to see them" by HA Ray). Moore's comprehensive description of each star in a constellation tends to drag, and details go well beyond the beginner level. A lot of the data will repeat what should be contained in a good star atlas. On the other hand I liked his viewing perspective, mostly aimed from northern latitudes ca 50 deg. I liked his easy literary style, and he does have an enviable lifetime of experience. He uses D-shaped star maps, that work well for stars near the horizon, but these maps aren't so good for stars overhead. Some of the introductory chapters are simple overviews of astronomy facts that are better covered in my university textbooks. Ultimately the superficial details aren't useful once you are beyond that beginner stage. I could still see holding onto a copy of this, or it's cousin "Stargazing", if only as a supplementary reference to a star atlas. However, for it's stated description as a beginner's guide to the sky, it falls short.

3 out of 5 stars An Average Book. Some good details, at times tedious........1998-10-21

A lot of the information is given in metric system. Pricing information is given in the British Pound. Much of the information given is very good and the advise he gives is sound in regards to binocular size. There are many instances when the subject mater drags and I found myself drifting off or jumping ahead.

2 out of 5 stars Should have been included free with the product it's pushing.......2007-08-07

For the price, this is a very slim offering. Some nice information, great illustrations, but it's barely a pamphlet. And it spends a good amount of its ink telling us how we really should buy the author's planisphere. This little 'book' should have been included with the plainisphere. That would have made a nice package -- one I'd gladly have paid for. As it is, I just feel ripped off.

If you own NightWatch: A Practical Guide to Viewing the Universe, save your money. Dicknson's book has great star charts, and they point out which objects make good binocular subjects.

        A disappointment.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2003-12-10

We own www.NightSkyMurals.com and we have been contemplating writing a book to leave with our customers that would give a general overview of the Night Sky to help familiarize them with it. When I read David Chandlers book I thought that it was more than what I was going to put together.

It is excellent! It should be easy for older kids to read and understand and yet not in any way too childish for their parents.

It explains so many things for people, in plain English, who have caught the bug to learn about the Night Sky around them or for beginning astronomers.

Most excellent! My customers will be getting this book.

        4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good.......2003-07-19

Took me quite a while to outgrow this little book and I still come back to it every now and then. Even if you don't intend to seriously dive into astronomy, this book provides a good guide for an occasional backyard outing with a pair of binoculars.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning astronomers!.......1998-06-30

Exploring the Night Sky is great at sparking interest in atronomy.

While this book offers clear and useful guidance, you won't need a college course just to understand the terminology or an expensive model of telescope to make use of it.

Exploring the Night Sky With Binoculars is perfectly suited to helping beginners experience and *enjoy* the stars!

                    Book Description

The Sun provides amateur astronomers with one of the few opportunities for daytime astronomy.

In order to see the major features of our nearest star, special telescopes that have a very narrow visible bandwidth are essential. The bandwidth has to be as narrow as 1 × 10 -10 m (1 Angstrom) and centred on the absorption line of neutral hydrogen. This makes many major features of the Sun’s chromosphere visible to the observer. Such narrow-band "Fabry-Perot etalon filters" are high technology, and until the introduction of the Coronado range of solar telescopes, were too expensive for amateur use. The entry-level Coronado telescope, the PST (Personal Solar Telescope) costs under $500.

Solar prominences (vast columns of plasma, best seen at the edge of the solar disk), filaments, flares, sunspots, plage and active regions are all visible and can be imaged to produce spectacular solar photographs. Philip Pugh has assembled a team of contributors who show just how much solar work can be done with Coronado telescopes, and explain how to get the best from these marvellous instruments.
