Surprisingly Useful.......2005-10-26

A surprisingly useful and insightful guide. My first response was that a style guide for email was oxymoronic; and that, I guess, is exactly the author's point. Email is thought to be exempt from the rules of clear communication; but of course, its not. The more concise, and clear, your message is, the more likely you will get a satisfactory response. I consider myself a veteran, long-time, high-volume, email user (Investment Banker: 80+ emails / day) - yet I found much here that I had not thought about before: unique ways to highlight key points, appropriateness of style, effective formatting, etc.. Includes time saving tips, strategies for managing email, and the obligatory reminders of the permanence of email, and the common pitfalls of casual usage in corporate settings. Highly recommended.

Useful Training Resource.......2005-09-23

Helping people learn to write clearly, efficiently, and effectively is an ongoing process. This book is exactly the kind of resource I'm always looking for. It's comprehensive, yet very easy to use. The information is accurate and addresses all the issues that continually come up when people use e-mail to communicate (which is much of the time). The questions and suggested activities make the book ideal for individual learning, team study programs, and workshops. And the checklists, which can be downloaded from the publisher's Web site, [...], make great handouts to reinforce training. The Best Book on E-Mail Style and Etiquette.......2005-09-20

As the author of an English reference guide/workbook, I think this book is exceptionally helpful to everyone needing to send out professional e-mails. I am new to the 'home office' concept of working. A critical success factor in this setup, where face-to-face human interaction is minimal, is to have powerful telephone skills.

I found that the book is obsolete and does not cover modern-age telephone techniques including the following :

- Effective Conference Calling - Effective Technical Presentations on telephone - Effective 'Bridge Calling' - leaving effective voice mail messages - Telephone Etiquettes - Mobile Phone techniques - Controlled Gossiping - Getting past the secretary to the Boss

Instead, the book digresses into normal sales techniques and telemarketing techniques, contradicting with the book cover : 'guide for manager or business owner'.

The book can better be retitled as 'elementary telephone skills for telemarketers'

Worlds Apart: Acting and Writing in Academic and Workplace Contexts offers a unique examination of writing as it is applied and used in academic and workplace settings. Based on a 7-year multi-site comparative study of writing in different university courses and matched workplaces, this volume presents new perspectives on how writing functions within the activities of various disciplines: law and public administration courses and government institutions; management courses and financial institutions; social-work courses and social-work agencies; and architecture courses and architecture practice. Using detailed ethnography, the authors make comparisons between the two types of settings through an understanding of how writing is operative within the particularities of these settings.

Although the research was initially established to further understanding of the relationships between writing in academic and workplace settings, it has evolved to examining writing as it is embedded in both types of settings--where social relationships, available tools, and historical, cultural, temporal, and physical location are all implicated in complex ways in the decisions people make as writers. These notes are designed as a guide-line for a course in Elementary Particle Physics for undergraduate students. The purpose is providing a rigorous and self-contained presentation of the theoretical framework and of the phenomenological aspects of the physics of interactions among fundamental constituents of matter.

The first part of the volume is devoted to the description of scattering processes in the context of relativistic quantum field theory. The use of the semi-classical approximation allows us to illustrate the relevant computation techniques in a reasonably small amount of space. Our approach to relativistic processes is original in many respects.

The second part contains a detailed description of the construction of the standard model of electroweak interactions, with special attention to the mechanism of particle mass generation. The extension of the standard model to include neutrino masses is also described.

We have included a number of detailed computations of cross sections and decay rates of pedagogical and phenomenological relevance.
