I have been an investment professional for 27 years. One of the most common concerns I encounter is the concern that investors have of retaining the corpus of their estate for their children. Yet, estate planning is a complicated field populated by attorneys CPA's and others with specialized knowledge. The "average man" feels overwhelmed. Now, I have found a source to which I can refer them. Greenway and Shotwell have done an excellent job of explaining the basics of estate planning and have done it with such humor that the book becomes engaging reading rather than a dry estate planning tome. Kudos to the authors!

can't believe a lawyer can write so lucidly and make the estate tax rules so clear. nancy randolf greenway has taken a complex subject and made it understandable....with humor, too. i recommend this book to everyone over the age of forty....a must read before wasting time on an estate-planning professional's billing clock.

This book is the first comprehensive, modern introduction to the theory of central simple algebras over arbitrary fields. Starting from the basics, it reaches such advanced results as the Merkurjev-Suslin theorem. This theorem is both the culmination of work initiated by Brauer, Noether, Hasse and Albert and the starting point of current research in motivic cohomology theory by Voevodsky, Suslin, Rost and others. Assuming only a solid background in algebra, but no homological algebra, the book covers the basic theory of central simple algebras, methods of Galois descent and Galois cohomology, Severi-Brauer varieties, residue maps and, finally, Milnor K-theory and K-cohomology. The last chapter rounds off the theory by presenting the results in positive characteristic, including the theorem of Bloch-Gabber-Kato. The book is suitable as a textbook for graduate students and as a reference for researchers working in algebra, algebraic geometry or K-theory.

This book provides a comprehensive account of a key, perhaps the most important, theory that forms the basis of Taylor-Wiles proof of Fermat's last theorem. Hida begins with an overview of the theory of automorphic forms on linear algebraic groups and then covers the basic theory and recent results on elliptic modular forms, including a substantial simplification of the Taylor-Wiles proof by Fujiwara and Diamond. He offers a detailed exposition of the representation theory of profinite groups (including deformation theory), as well as the Euler characteristic formulas of Galois cohomology groups. The final chapter presents a proof of a non-abelian class number formula.

In this volume, a new functor $H^2_{ab}(K,G)$ of abelian Galois cohomology is introduced from the category of connected reductive groups $G$ over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$ to the category of abelian groups. The abelian Galois cohomology and the abelianization map$ab^1:H^1(K,G) \rightarrow H^2_{ab}(K,G)$ are used to give a functorial, almost explicit description of the usual Galois cohomology set $H^1(K,G)$ when $K$ is a number field.

This volume addresses algebraic invariants that occur in the confluence of several important areas of mathematics, including number theory, algebra, and arithmetic algebraic geometry. The invariants are analogues for Galois cohomology of the characteristic classes of topology, which have been extremely useful tools in both topology and geometry. It is hoped that these new invariants will prove similarly useful. Early versions of the invariants arose in the attempt to classify the quadratic forms over a given field.
The authors are well-known experts in the field. Serre, in particular, is recognized as both a superb mathematician and a master author. His book on Galois cohomology from the 1960s was fundamental to the development of the theory. Merkurjev, also an expert mathematician and author, co-wrote The Book of Involutions (Volume 44 in the AMS Colloquium Publications series), an important work that contains preliminary descriptions of some of the main results on invariants described here.
The book also includes letters between Serre and some of the principal developers of the theory. It will be of interest to graduate students and research mathematicians interested in number theory and Galois cohomology.
