Does failure to use what this book advocates make one a proponent and practicioner of racist education? Does an exploration, for example, of the links between, say, Alexander Hamilton's plan for absorbing state debt and encouraging manufacturing and the fact that the US was surrounded by the British in Canada, the West and at Sea...does teaching this make one a racist? A proponent of white, male hegemony?

The problem with this book and the whole gamut of "multicultural" (it should be called what it is: leftist and politicized and dishonest) pedagogy is its presumption that curriculum in the United States is racist and that it must be reformed if racism is to end. That is bull. Multiculturalists define something largely apolitical as a political extreme and thus give themselves permission to be the extremists that they are.

Don't let the title of this book veer you away from it - as a registered Republican, I at first thought that this would be a diatribe of Liberal brain washing

quite the contrary - the book is filled with lesson ideas and suggestions, towards teaching, on how we can better use ethnicity and culture as a strength within the ways we teach, rather than alienating these topics from ourselves and the teaching

The book takes race itself, and shows how we can make a curriculum out of it, that is free of bias, non-alienating to anyone, and most of all, creates fun learning environments

highly recommended, especially for teachers!

As someone in the field of anti-racist public education, I found this book very useful and thought-provoking. There are background and theory articles, lesson plans, handouts, and a complete range of resources. And all these items are in bite-size articles and excerpts that make them very practical and useful for staff and students. I was thrilled to find this book and even more thrilled to read through it!

Theoretically complete, but doesn't help practically. You can learn about adult learners, but how to develop an actual program... I don't know, it's not enough!

This book is a great read for anyone who is interested in the programming aspect of any type of organization or educational setting. The author explains the somewhat complex programming process in a simplistic manner that novel and experienced program planners can comprehend. There are numerous workesheets and tips to guide you to presenting a great program. It is trull an excellent source of knowledge.

This book is in logical order and is well written but it lacks visual aides and clearly labeled examples. For these reasons, it appears to be incomplete and hard to follow.
I will be happy to review adult education text book or manuscripts for a fee.

Staff development for librarians.......2005-12-12

This is the only staff development book my library system has so I read it, even though it is not my area of interest. Even though the title does not say so, you might guess from looking at the author that the book is intended for staff development at libraries, and you would be correct. I'm interested in staff development in educational settings. However, I think that the book has useful information that can be applied outside the library, if it is used as a basic primer. The book includes all the steps you need to take to help develop your staff, what obstacles you might ecounter, and how to overcome them. If you already know about staff development from other books, this one may not provide you with new information. The book is thin both in size and the amount of detail it gives. Its better to use as a jumping off point. I gave it 4 stars as a book for librarians to use, as it seems to be intended for that audience, and 3 stars for anyone else who might read it.

All You Need.......2001-02-19

This is such a great book. I originally got it for a Park Resource Management class while pursuing my Master's degree. This is definitely one of those books that you hang on to after you finish the class.

Wildland Recreation has so many different resources. There are pictures, charts, graphs, diagrams, and my favorite- case studies and examples of research. It is a great reference to use when writing papers or doing other research, because you can go look up the study. Not only that, but at the end of each chapter, all the references are provided, making it easy to search for what you need outside of this book.

Wildland Recreation is well written and understandable. The information is clear and straightforward, easy to comprehend. The chapters and sections are nicely divided into categories. This is a great book for anyone interested in any aspect of wildland management.

It's filled with full-color photos, sky charts, and vivid full-color art renditions of objects in outer space. Diagrams and illustrations explain the origins of the universe and our solar system. Photos taken from powerful telescopes capture visions of comets, nebulae, stars being born, distant galaxies, the surface of our Sun, and the earth's neighboring planets. The composition of the Earth, as well as other planets, is shown and discussed. Also shown and explained are both ancient and modern telescopes, including giant, state-of-the-art radiotelescopes located in various parts of the world. The book's final section shows and discusses the history of space exploration, starting with early twentieth-century experiments in rocket science, and extending to the international manned space station currently under construction. Here's a great volume for amateur astronomers of all ages, and a fine textbook supplement for high school science classes.

Bad Book: Contains Factual Errors.......2003-12-31

I just received a copy of "Essential Atlas of Astronomy" as a gift from a relative. I am an amateur astronomer. After leafing through this supposed "educational" work that was translated from a spanish work published in 2001, I noted that there are major factual errors in this book.

Examples:

On page 31 it is stated "It is calculated that the Milky Way [our home galaxy] contains around 300,000 stars." First of all, there is no such specific "calculation." There are many credible estimates that vary from one billion stars to one trillion stars. I have never even heard rumors of a definitive calculation, let alone one so low.

On page 23, under "Nebulae" it stated that the colors of nebulae "vary with their temperature." This is just factually wrong. The colors of nebulae vary with their constituent gases which are being ionized (hydrogen gives off a reddish color, for instance).

These examples are not typographical errors. They are just factually incorrect statements.

Someone from Barron's needs to seriously scrutinze this book and determine whether it is appropriate as educational material. In the meantime, I would steer clear of it as either entertainment or education.
