      Book Description

Ruthanne Lum McCunn, author of the acclaimed THOUSAND PIECES OF GOLD, introduces the fascinating life story of Gim Gong Lue, a nineteenth-century horticultural pioneer. The dynamic narrative is told from the perspective of the three women who knew him best, his mother in China, a New England spinster, and his friend, a former slave.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story weaving.......2000-06-24

Wooden Fish Songs is a fascinating story that weaves together the worlds 19th Century China, New England and the post-Civil War South. McCunn's extensive research makes this true story come alive and her talent makes the three women who tell the story real and believable. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Chinese literature and culture. This book portrays the difficult life not only for the Chinese immigrant in America, but also for the family left behind. I recommend this and any other of McCunn's works.

5 out of 5 stars Moving and factual........1998-04-15

I received a copy of Wooden Fish Songs as a gift from my father, who is a familial descendent of Fanny, and the New England people with whom Lue Gim Gong lived in America. Many of my father's recollections about his relatives were given to the author as the book was written, and helped to maintain the story's factual basis. It is a moving historical account of the difficulty and pain encountered when east/west cultures came together, when differences in peoples were terribly feared, and when cultural mores and expectations within the family were not to be challenged - even for love.

4 out of 5 stars for citrus growers.......2007-01-27

a very useful and short guide for citrus amateurs growers. Very imortant and good information about citrus USDA zones and many citrus varietes carefully described. I think there is a essentail book for amateur citrus growers in temperate zones (atlantic europe coast)

4 out of 5 stars Nice Guide for the Novice.......2007-01-10

The nursery where I bought my citrus tress recommended this book. I think it provides a very comprehensive coverage of growing citrus in AZ. This is a must for your reference library.

3 out of 5 stars Great pictures, but could have been better.......2004-07-18

The book is attractive and does contain a lot of information about different citrus varieties. My main criticism is that the Planting and Care section could have been much more substantial. Specifically, since the descriptions of various citrus ailments (poor nutrition, inappropriate watering, infection with pests) are not accompanied by photos of the symptoms, it makes it harder for the reader to figure out what these problems might actually look like. The black-and-white pen-and-ink drawings of pests are somewhat informative, but they're very limited compared to what might be conveyed by a photo.

Also, a few diagrams to help illustrate "good pruning" would have been great.

I'm not suggesting that this book should have been a definitive technical treatise on citrus, but I think it would have been more useful if more attention had been paid to what goes wrong when you're trying to grow citrus.

5 out of 5 stars subtropical fruit for third world country's information.......2001-12-20

This book has informatiom for the professional as well as the village farmer in Africa , its teachings are simple and clear for all those interested in the subject to follow , the illustrations and instructions are simple even for those with a basic knowledge of subtropical fruit growing. Africa is not covered in the distribution map never the less the fruits are for example the mango tree is synonymous with Africa , it gives food, and shelter from the elements and fuel what more can you want from a tree. Every African school would benefit from a book like this , and i know one that will.

5 out of 5 stars Great citrus guide with wonderful pix/info.......2001-10-10

I have read several other books on citrus cultivation, but this book is by far the best i've run across. It has excellent photographs of the hundreds of citrus fruits, both on the tree and of the inside of the fruit itself. It has some great citrus recipes, but it mainly focuses on the cultivation and care of each variety. This book tells the grower what he/she can exactly expect to see, and how to best care for your tree. If there is ANYTHING this book lacks, it is more info on out-of-zone citrus gardening. For example, i live in NC and i have phenomenal success with all my trees in containers (i winter them in a "cheap" plastic greenhouse). That is my only criticism of this book---otherwise, all cultivar info is detailed and well illustrated!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book on Citrus.......2007-05-15

I live in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean and my Supervisor who has travelled extensively around the world has recommended "Citrus Varieties of of the World" having himself bought a copy a few years ago while in California.

I presently work in the Citrus Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Trinidad and I wanted a book that can explicity explain the various types of Citrus varieties that we propagate having originally acquired the planting material from California. I had very little knowledge initially on the new types until reading this book.

Now my work seems less hectic when I have to explain to farmers about the different types of Citrus.

The book explains the varieties from history to development to taste and I would recommend it to anyone that has an interest in Citrus.

Most historical books of this area center around Tampa and Tarpon Springs, ignoring the rich and unique atmosphere that is Lutz and central Pasco County of the early 1900's and late 1800's. That's what makes this book so special. It is jammed packed with local history as well as hundreds of old photos, and as a native to this area, I couldn't put it down. Native or not, if you love old Florida history and want the real history of backwoods Florida with all of its lore of the railroad, logging industry and of the pioneers of its times, you will love this book.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-05-06

I purchased this book since I have citrus trees in my back yard in Florida and had a particular disease or pest. The photos helped some. I did have to consult a much larger book at the Home Depot on citrus problems published by Ortho. Between all the reading, the internet and talking with others, I chose the proper chemical and am pleased with the results. The info on Hawaii wasn't of much value, however I guess they are in a sub-tropical area as well. Not sure how one achieves the beautiful fruit pictured on the front cover though. Our trees in this area have had a blight spread by wind and many nice trees have been cut down to prevent the transfer. Of all the varieties I have seen growing here, very few have nice skin or unblighted foliage. Hopefully I will be able to reach that goal. The book also covers a number of fruits that I have not observed in our area. The book is well laid out and is a good guide for basic reference. Appreciate Ortho publishing this book for us amateurs.

5 out of 5 stars Very good overview.......2002-12-21

This book provides a very helpful overview of subtropical fruits. I was interested in finding good fruits to plant that are hard to obtain in stores and do well in my climate. By perusing this book multiple times over the course of several months, I was able to begin to get a feel for what would be good candidates. I have since planted several of them, am enjoying good fruit, and still like glancing through this book in a free moment...

1 out of 5 stars Way too vague.......2002-12-02

If you want to know how to take care of your tropical fruit you won't learn it here! If you want to see pictures of citrus fruit, that you will see. I have pineapple plants along with banana, mango, orange, key lime, tangerine, and papaya trees. This book was worthless to me. I already know what they look like.

        5 out of 5 stars Straightforward.......2001-07-29

I bought this book when I was in middle school and memorized it :-p. Now I am a college junior and I'm working towards interning at a tropical fruit grove later on. I won't say this book started me on that journey, but it's a pretty good guide for learning

3 out of 5 stars Interesting book but needs to answer more questions........1999-09-21

I read the book from Ortho on "All about Citrus and Subtropical Fruits" but in my reading was not able to find out which type of trees could and could not be planted around a swimming pool. I am very interested and would appreciate a more detailed review on this.

                Book Description

Stars, Nebulae and the Interstellar Medium: Observational Physics and Astrophysics complements the author's highly successful Astrophysical Techniques, Fourth Edition (2004). This book describes those characteristics of stars, groups of stars, and the material between the stars that can be directly observed or inferred from the study of electromagnetic emissions and, occasionally, high-energy particles. Providing a wealth of material of interest and use to a wide range of readers, the descriptive chapters are accessible to scientifically literate nonspecialists while the complete text is suitable for most advanced undergraduates in astrophysics.
