If There Were a Ten Star Rating.............2002-03-27
This is a wonderful book, both for Jefferson fans and gardeners. Since I'm both, it is doubly wonderful. You can read Jefferson's records of what he planted when, his observations about all sorts of garden topics, his letters to friends and family about gardening, and see the voluminous records he kept about all things horticultural.
Forget About Other Organic Gardening Books!.......2000-10-16

Thomas Jefferson's Farm Book 1774-1826.......2002-12-27
There are many entries in Jefferson's "Garden Book" that are more appropriate to his "Farm Book," just as there are entries in the "Farm Book" that belong to his other memoranda books. But Jefferson was often inconsistent with the record of his jottings; probably he just placed them in the books at hand.
The "Farm Book," then, is not a farm book in the limited sense, but a plantation book embracing multitudinous activities on his several plantations, the center of interest always being either Monticello or Poplar Forest.
I found reading through this book to chronicle how Jefferson, as a plantation manager, worked to plan ahead in order to provide food and clothing for the one hundred-twenty slaves on the five thousand acre estate. Jefferson set himself to apply on his own farms the results of a lifetime of sturdy and experiment in agricultural theories. The letters and notes he left to posterity and the mechanical models he designed and made record his contributions to scientific agriculture. All of which are brough to our attention within the pages of this volume.
The narrative is free flowing and easily comprehended and it is a joy to read. As Jefferson once wrote... "I am going to Virginia. I am then to be liberated from the hated occupations of politics, and to remain in the bosom of my family, my farm, and my book." The pages are copies of the original pages of the farm book with commentary and relevant extracts from other writings follow these pages. Nevertheless, you get a feel that running a farm wasn't an easy job.

The Farm Book by Thomas Jefferson with light notes and annotations by Sam Sloan
Thomas Jefferson Manufacturer: Ishi Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0923891803 Release Date: 2007-01-24 |
Book Description
The Farm Book is the primary source for all studies about Thomas Jefferson and his slaves. It is a notebook kept and maintained by Thomas Jefferson from 1774 until just before his death in 1826. Unlike his letters and correspondence which Thomas Jefferson clearly intended to be kept for posterity, the Farm Book contains his private notes that he probably never imagined would be scrutinized and studied by future generations. The "Farm Book" derives its name from those two words that were written on the inside cover. The Farm Book starts with the genealogy of his favorite horse, Caractacus. It then moves on to the first inventory of the Slaves of Thomas Jefferson: "A Roll of the proper slaves of Thomas Jefferson, Jan. 14. 1774." There are 29 slaves listed here. After Thomas Jefferson had inherited slaves from his father, his mother, his father-and-law and his wife, after they all died, the number of his slaves grew to 187, the most famous of whom was Sally Hemings, his presumed mistress. The question of whether Thomas Jefferson really fathered children by Sally Hemings remains controversial. However, putting that aside, a little appreciated fact is that the majority of slaves of Thomas Jefferson were not at Monticello but were at Poplar Forest, in what is now Lynchburg, Virginia. After Thomas Jefferson died in 1826, the slaves at Monticello were sold at auction and were widely disbursed, with the exceptions only of Sally Hemings and her two remaining sons. This was because the land around Monticello was not suitable for cultivation. However, the slaves at Poplar Forest, where the best farmland was, stayed right where they were. Their descendants are still there today, where they attend Jefferson Forest High School. The Farm Book, which groups slaves by their slave families, with husband, wife and children grouped together, needs to be studied in detail by anybody interested in the genealogy of these slave families.

Book Description
"I am going to Virginia," Jefferson wrote late in 1793. "I am then to be liberated from the hated occupations of politics, and to remain in the bosom of my family, my farm, and my books." Although Jefferson's liberation from public life was to prove temporary, in 1794 he did enjoy and extended interlude from political service. He set himself to applying the results of a lifetime of studying and experimenting with agricultural theories on his own farms. The letters, notes, and drawings that Jefferson left to posterity record his contributions to scientific agriculture. The heart of these records is the Farm Book, a journal of plantation management that Jefferson maintained from 1774 until just before his death in 1826. The Farm Book, reproduced here in facsimile, is a wide-ranging depiction of the agricultural and industrial activities on Jefferson's plantations, primarily Monticello and Poplar Forest. In Thomas Jefferson's Farm Book, the late Edwin Morris Betts, professor of biology at the University of Virginia, embellishes this agricultural journal with illuminating commentary and relevant extracts selected from Jefferson's correspondence and other memorandum books. Organized topically, the annotations and extracts paint a uniquely complete portrait of plantation life and activity.
Jefferson's records reveal an experimental farm, implementing such innovations as horizontal plowing, a crop-rotation plan, and Jefferson's own revolutionary moldboard plow. In addition, the Farm Book is a window to slave life, containing Jefferson's notes regarding the rations his overseer distributed, the daily tasks required by particular slaves, and the number of yards he purchased for slaves' clothing. The book also portrays the industries pursued by enslaved and free workmen, including the Mulberry Row nailery, joinery, blacksmith's shop, and spinning and weaving house.
Wide-ranging and minutely detailed, Thomas Jefferson's Farm Book provides the most complete record of plantation activity in early America, casting light on the life of the Monticello plantation, its owner, and its inhabitants, both free and enslaved.

Towards an Integrated Global Geodetic Observing System (IGGOS)
Manufacturer: Springer-Verlag Telos ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540670793 |
Book Description
The international symposium, "Towards an Integrated Global Geodetic Observing System", held in Munich 5-9 October 1998, analysed the state of the art of geodetic space techniques and looked into the possibility of the establishment of an integrated global observing system. Considering that most geodetic space techniques have reached or approached the one part per billion relative precision level, the question is what their joint and coordinated operation could offer to the study of the Earth system. The symposium was divided into four topics: (1) reference system and datum integration; (2) strength and weakness of space techniques; (3) upcoming gravity field satellite missions; (4) implications for Earth sciences.Books:
