1 out of 5 stars No university/college should use this.............2007-08-19

I had to use this book for an online course while earning my bachelor's degree. This book was horrible. This group of 3 authors did not do a good job. The ideas and points did not run smoothly together from one point to another. It seems like the 3 authors did not work very close together to make sure their ideas connected and related directly with each other's ideas. It was as if the authors went from talking about point A, skipping all the way to point F, then going to point C, then back to point F, etc. etc. Their ideas did not flow in an understandable sequence. I also agree about the examples. The examples were no help and they were not thorough examples of material that you would run into the real-world. The examples needed much more details in them.

2 out of 5 stars Huge waste of money.......2007-07-06

Horngren makes a notoriously dry subject even worse. It is filled with long winded verse and practically devoid of dynamic examples. Accounting is something that 'works' and can be worked out. It's best learned when applied to real world situations...this book aims to have you memorize boring definitions and then support those definitions with scarce examples. Even our professor said he's been lobbying to get this book out of my school's curriculum...too bad that didn't happen BEFORE I came along.

This book was not at all what I expected and was not very useful.

4 out of 5 stars Introdution to management accouting.......2006-09-02

Very good. Cover is a little worn. Some pages have been written by pencil.

4 out of 5 stars Used in MBA program - Intro to Accounting.......2006-04-06

I have had experience with accounting and found this book to be fairly basic. However, if you are a beginner with no knowledge of accounting, this is a good textbook. I read one of the other reviews about how there is a bunch of useless junk on each page and while this is partially true, it would be UNBEARABLE to read if there wasn't this so called "junk" on every page. Overall a good textbook that I will keep around as a reference for accounting basics.

Book Description

This widely respected financial accounting text captures the predominant market share among graduate, MBA, and higher-level undergraduate programs. With great clarity, it presents both the basic concepts underlying financial statements and the terminology and methods that allow students to interpret, analyze, and evaluate actual corporate financial statements.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rigorous Book.......2007-01-03

I believe that the book assumes that reader has the ability to read and digest complex ideas. It's not for people who like the Dummies or Idiot's series.

I would think that any person who intends to get an MBA should be able to follow this book.

The only downside is that the initial chapters give too much information which might cause the reader to be overwhelmed.

Don't worry. This information will be repeated many times as the book progresses.

5 out of 5 stars PRACTICAL AND CLEAR APPROACH TO AMERICAN ACOUNTABILITY SYSTEM.......2006-07-03

THIS BOOK CONTAINS A CLEAR EXPLANATION OF THE AMERICAN ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM.
IT HAS A LOT OF EXERCISES BASED ON REAL FIRMS THAT IT MAKES A MUST -HAVE BOOK FOR PEOPLE INTERESTED IN THIS ISSUES.
GOING THROUGH IT IS A FASCINATING APPROACH TO HOW A COMPANY WORKS AND WHY TAKES ITS BUSINESS DECCISSIONS IN A CERTAIN MOMENT.
I HIGHLY RECOMEND THIS BOOK FOR ITS EASY COMPREHENSION AND FOR ITS PRACTICAL EXAMPLES.

2 out of 5 stars I paid $150 for this???.......2006-01-23

This book has potential but is overshadowed by several flaws:
1) Perhaps the biggest flaw: I was surprised at how many mistakes were in this book -- I encountered chapter review problems that mathematically did not work out or were missing information that was necessary to complete the problem.
2) It claims to be a text for students with no previous accounting knowledge, but I found it very difficult to follow until after my professor had already taught the material. I consider myself to be an intelligent person, but I found this book too advanced until I had a basic understanding of the concepts.
3) The book frequently directs you to refer to problems or information on previous pages. I find it frustrating to have to keep flipping pages to understand the concept being described.
4) The 11th edition deleted references to T-Accounts -- yet that was how my professor taught much of the course.

1 out of 5 stars This is not a textbook..........2006-01-22

This is at best a reference for professional accountants. For students, like me, it is not helpful, to say the least. To understand what the authors want to say, I had to refer to other accounting texts in the library or on the web.

4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-12-12

I liked the examples in this book. If you purchase this book with solution manual and study guide you can really get a lot out.

5 out of 5 stars Great soft coral primer........2000-12-08

I'm more of a technical reader that needs very definite explanations and whys. Great book. I read the whole book in 1 sitting. Too bad it had to end so soon. The laminated pictures are cool too.

                  4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2000-09-30

Very informative book about soft corals, but it could have been a lot better: it speaks too vague about corals, it talks about the families and class of soft corals. I've learned some things with this book ( why soft corals uses iodine, etc ) .. Its a shame that it doesnt go more deeper and more informative: it could select the most representative corals from each family and make a quick guide ( light, position, etc etc ). It does contain a LOT of pictures, all of them in excelent quality. Too bad the book its so small ( 64 pages ... :( ), but you cant ask much more for a 10$ book. I'd recommend it to the begginner / intermediate reefer, no information for a advanced one ( a part from listing all the classes and taxonomy of soft corals ).

Add this book to your order if you make a big order and would like to read something in the bus :)

                    Book Description

This book, which will complement Ben Evans’ previous work: Space Shuttle Columbia – Her Missions and Crews, is designed to cast minds back to a time when the Shuttle was truly the future: untarnished by disaster and bolstered by apparent success. It was a time when astronauts confidently expected to fly seven, eight or nine missions in their careers, when missions would be launched twice a month, when virtually anybody could travel into space and the fabled final frontier was drawing inexorably closer as each year passed. The book will tell the stories of Challenger’s missions from the points of view of the astronauts, engineers and scientists who flew and knew her and the managers, technicians and ground personnel who designed her and nursed her from humble beginnings as a structural test article into one of the most capable Shuttles in NASA’s service.

It will combine technical esoterica with interviews, stories and anecdotes from the lifetime of this remarkable spacecraft. Challenger veterans, including Gordon Fullerton and Vance Brand, will describe their experiences and the differences between Challenger and her sister ships. The development of Challenger herself will be explored in detail, including her design, development, construction and preparation for missions.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and informative at the same time.......2001-06-15

This book is a children's introduction to the most awesome (if unseen) inhabitant of the night sky: the black hole! Using simple words and concepts, the book explains where black holes come from, and describes their nature. This is all done using the vehicle of a small boy first talking to an astronomer, and then using his imagination to travel to a black hole wearing a space suit.

My seven-year-old son jumped at this book. I liked that it was pretty easy for him to understand (except that the author repeatedly mentioned "mass" without ever defining the word). The pictures are wonderfully whimsical, while still contributing forcefully to what is being discussed in the text. Overall, I would say that this is a great book for children - funny and informative at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Real science presented in easy words and great illustrations.......1998-05-30

What happens to a star when it dies? A small child dons a spacesuit to find out. The gravity of the black hole stretches him out. Another child considers a thimbleful of black hole on a seesaw, outweighing a stack of elephants.

This book is full of hard science. But it is presented in easy words that a child of 4-8 can understand. The bright illustrations are full of motion and lend understanding and excitement to the subject.

2 out of 5 stars Easy puzzles, silly content, totally unrealistic.......2004-01-30

The publisher states the reading level is age 9-12. I used this as a read aloud for my 6 year old and the content was fully understandable. This is a non-consumable puzzle book. My son enjoyed it and thought much more of it than I did.

The format is comic-book style with cartoon-like illustrations. The storyline is a bit silly. Two school children on a field trip to a space center walk into a horizontal-lying space shuttle, which then suddenly takes off and lands on the moon. The shuttle is running on autopilot. The moon is inhabited by a human who was an engineer for the government; he runs an army of robots that attack the children. They escape unharmed and take off for Mars. En route they are hit by a comet, which results in minor damage to an external camera. They teach themselves to fix it while the shuttle continues on its' journey. When they arrive on Mars they meet "rock people" who are talking, walking red rocks with legs that talk backwards and eat rocks. Suddenly the man from the Moon appears and is happy to meet the rock people. He decides to live there. The boy and girl return to the ship. They are told they were accidentally locked inside for 20 minutes. Their pockets are full of proof that they really did go space traveling, though.

On each double-page spread there is a question that must be answered. Sometimes the answer lies on previous pages and other times it takes careful looking to find the answers. An example is where did they see the man on the Moon before? Answer: his face was on a poster at the space center.

The entire storyline is silly and unrealistic. Children who love learning about space may not appreciate the parts that go against reality (i.e. a man living on the moon alone). Most of the questions are not very challenging, even for a 6 year old.

This is one in a series by Usbourne.
