Love Ben !!.......2007-10-01
Really enjoyed this book. I'm an experienced investor and still came away with useful information. For those who believe this was all gloom & doom....WAKE UP ! While I do believe they used a worst case scenerio their messages are right on. Start saving now, live below your means and learn about various investment options so you can take care of yourself in retirement. Great book to help pull peoples head out of the sand. I love Ben !!
Retirement Planning Made Comfortable.......2007-05-19
Ben Stein & Phil DeMuth have a simple rule for the new millennium: "If you're old enough to have sex, you're old enough to save for retirement." The same could be said for reading "YES, YOU CAN RETIRE COMFORTABLY!" Though targeted primarily for Baby Boomers, many facing an immanent retirement crisis, this fact based easily understandable book will benefit every generation old enough to reproduce.
The news is not good. The government does not have the resources to handle the Social Security and Medicare obligations of the soon to retire Baby Boomers let alone the generations that will follow them. Nor is there a plan in place to remedy this impending crisis. So don't count on Uncle Sam. For the 16% of Americans that that receives guaranteed-benefit pensions from their employers, things look a little better, but that's assuming the plan is adequately funded and that you'll ultimately get the benefit. Don't count on that either. According to the authors, "The pension liability has the potential to mushroom into one of the largest financial crises in U.S. history." How about 401 K's, the do it yourself pension alternative? On average 401 K balances are abysmally low. Whoa!
That's a lot of doom and gloom to absorb, and if you're waiting to hear who's coming to the rescue: it's you. Stop spending, start saving and start making wise investment decisions. No quick fixes. Ninety percent of the book is devoted to addressing the problem. The plan you need to follow is laid out in detail. What's more, it's a fun read because Stein and DeMuth write with clarity and humor.
A book that gives you a look at most of the current variables to consider.......2007-03-13
After reading this book, I can't say I felt reassured about "retiring comfortably" but I can say that I learned quite a bit. Stein and his co-author do provide formulas for both the conservative and more risk-tolerant saver and investor, including a "couch potato" formula for the conservative investor. Another point worth thinking about - how much you should have in U.S. investments and how much in international funds, especially in our ever global economy. Stein delves into this quite a bit.
I think the title of this book is a bit misleading and should read, "Yes, you MAY still Retire Comfortably" - IF you are able to save enough, inflation and taxes don't spiral out of control, etc. The ONE point I got from this book is that there are no formulas that guarantee a comfortable retirement but there are guidelines that up the chances of reaching that goal considerably.
Trouble is, if you want to be reasonably sure you'll have enough money for retirement you have to save a LOT more than the average American does and, ideally, carry little to no credit card debt. The figures, I'll admit, shook me up. Most Americans have HUGE mortages, significant credit card deb and are paying off debt (slowly) when they should be saving.
However, as grim as the picture may seem to be, Stein allows for readers to tack in variables such as expected Social Security income, various rates of inflation, etc. If the "best case" scenario occurs, people may not need to save as much. If the "worst case scenario" takes place, watch out!
I think most people reading this book will discover that they need to save FAR more than they think per year, stop counting on Social Security as a "given" , etc. The outlook for Baby Boomers isn't great, IF they don't heed the advice in this book and start thinking carefully about how important that designer outfit is - versus living decently in retirement.
SAVE MORE NOW!.......2007-02-13
A good wake up call. Very good practical advice. An easy read with classic dry Stein humor. Good for family and friends who are not paying attention.
Full of sound advice.......2006-12-04
I was very impressed with this book. It is full of sound advice for both the accumulation phase and distribution phase of investing.
The author's simple 2 Index Fund approach will probably beat most active fund approaches plus you can do other things besides managing your portfolio full time.
The authors also allowed up to a 50:50 split in the stock portion of their asset allocation between domestic and foreign stocks.
I also enjoyed their comparisons of alternative withdrawal strategies during the distribution phase.
The book has an excellent explanation of why companies can give a higher payout ratio to immediate annuity investors versus investors self-annuitizing their portfolio. This magic is due to insurance companies being able to pool their risks and plan for an average lifetime where investors must plan for their maximum versus average lifetime.
I found no flaws in their methodology for planning how much you need to save for retirement. The combination of tables (with spreadsheets on their web site) is a little complex to follow. It would have been nice if they put it together into one financial planning program on their web site.
Last, the authors have reached the same conclusion I have based upon the net worth and US savings rates data: Most Boomers will not save and invest enough to retire when they want to. The only choices that will be left to them are work longer, buy immediate annuities, sell your house using a reverse mortgage, or sell your house and trade down to a smaller house in an area with a lower cost of living.
I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including:
The Richest Man in Babylon

The Millionaire Next Door

Customer Reviews:
Good Basic Overview.......2006-11-12
This book is a good introduction to retirement plans. It explains the pros and cons of each type of plan in plain English. This book is recommended for people who want a good background before they talk with a plan administrator, financial planner or tax professional.
However, for people who want more detailed information on how each plan works, especially if you're a sole proprietor, I would suggest "Creating Your Own Retirement Plan: A Guide to Keoghs and IRAs for the Self-Employed" (Nolo Press, 2002) by Amy Delpo, John C. Suttle and Twila Slesnick instead.
Too little, too simple.......2006-11-07
Not quite enough information or detail for my use. Perhaps useful for the very small business or for a very basic introduction.
A tough topic tamed.......2003-11-24
For business owners, senior execs and their advisors, Jean's book is straight forward reading with valuable charts and graphs. It includes tips and tricks from seasoned advisors and ample references.
Beyond 401(k)s for Small Business Owners.......2003-11-18
This book has a narrow audience and most people would have no interest. But if you, like I, own a small business: buy this book!!! The subject (keeping the money you have earned) is quite complex, with many different plans and programs. This book makes you aware of your options and shows you the steps you need to take to put each plan in action. Perhaps the best benefit of all is a review of the costs and complexity of each plan type. A plan that can shield you from taxes, but costs a fortune to put in place and maintain, has obvious limitations. But the salesperson trying to sell you that type of plan may not give you all the detail on the long term costs. If you own a business and ever plan to retire, buy this book.
WOW - so when was this topic easy to understand?.......2003-10-29
"Mumbo jumbo best left to the professionals" is how I always felt when confronted with decisions on these topics. Atty Sifleet has made this an easy read and so understandable. Even a one-person company techie like me can figure it out. Congratulations Jean!

Generalized information ,too little detail.......2003-04-26
This is a good book if you have never owned rabbits and this will be one of a few a books that you plan on reading, because despite the authors experience and education on the subjects in the book he seems as if he is rushing it just a little, granted it is old (last pub date was 1988), and also as if he is preaching his way rather than letting you develop experience through guidance through learning your own way, there are ways to screw up and there are those who get it no matter what. I highly suggest that you do your research before you consider owning rabbits, I disagree with the authors view on raising rabbits primarily for meat, with my animals I raise primarily for the coats and angora wool which I tan the hides and spin with down from my chickens) and sell them locally, meat is mearly a by product for me and believe me it can really help on your grocery bill. Just do yourself and all the rest of us who are in this business a favor, educate yourself first before you even buy a rabbit.
It's old.......2000-01-05
this is a great book but it was revised in 1988. That is hardly the modern way. Actually, most things don't change but I found a few things that are not true (like what kind of hay to feed). Any way, consider all your possibilities before investing in this book.
Not quite enough.......1999-11-03
As beginners, we didn't feel this book gave us enough detailed information to care for the rabbits confidently.
This book is good for commerical and show rabbits........1999-03-28
As a small homstead rabbit rasier, I was disappointed in buying this book. It seemed to be only for the commerical and show rabbit rasiers.
An excellent book about rabbits.......1998-12-01
This is one of the finest books ever written about rabbits . I use mine on an average of weekly, this book is a must have for rabbit raisers and breeders.
