Overall, I found the book pricey given the quality... The layout is also not as user friendly as other textbooks in the field. For every topic it does give an example, but does not always clearly outline the steps obtained to achieve the displayed solution. Not to mention the fact that there is almost one error in every larger example.

This book is ideal for managers of internationally oriented businesses who want to get a grip of the financial accounting statements produced by accountants and auditors.

The positive message that the authors send out is that accounting is not that difficult. This book is clear in its structure and language. The reader is gently taken by the hand and shown how to dissect any financial report, whatever its underlying accounting methods.

Readers have to be aware that because of its international perspective, the prime focus is on analysis and not on writing a financial statement.

Public accountants are being attacked from all sides. Stock and bond holders, the United States Congress, the Securities and Exchange Commission, clients, and even members of the profession itself, all accuse accountants of failing in their watchdog duties as auditors and of approving financial statements that follow questionable accounting rules. Academic as well as other critics fault the profession for failing to innovate, particularly in respect to accounting for the effects of inflation. The attacks often take the form of litigation that has resulted in the payment of hundreds of millions of dollars in damages by firms and their liability insurers. This situation is not unique to the United States. Similar attacks can be observed in Canada, the United Kingdom, and other countries. On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying accounting and bookkeeping machines? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of accounting and bookkeeping machines vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of accounting and bookkeeping machines? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing the regional markets for imported and exported accounting and bookkeeping machines. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for each region, is based on a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the shares that countries are likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information for strategic planning purposes.

Experiential learning is something we understand or should understand. We learn from experience and this has been well documented in prior work on experiential learning. Collaborative learning strategies, simulations, games, and apprenticeships are all about experience. In this groundbreaking book, the authors provide the first referenced text on conversation as learning. If you really want to understand the experience of learning in conversation, I highly encourage you the read this outstanding book. The authors provide specific case studies of the concepts that they provide and their work is well referenced. This is one of those books that I have a hundred or so references tabbed for regular use. I refer to this work on a regular basis. Very powerful.

Couldn't even finish it.......2005-11-02

With the disclaimer that I refused to invest any more of my life in the completion of this book, I have to say that this is among the worst books that I've never read. I was attracted to it because of (i) Rhodes' reputation, and (ii) the legacy of, and current connection to, farming in my own family. My intimate familiarity with farming (see note ii above) might have made me more sympathetic to, or perhaps more critical of, this book - I don't know. Anyway, I found it to be flat and uninspired. Perhaps it is a good read for someone who has never, ever stepped foot on a farm. However, I think that listening to an ag report on the radio would be just as informative, and about as interesting.

A safe antidote for suburban cluelessness.......2002-09-02

What a damned shame this book is out of print! If it were up to me, this book would be required reading for anyone planning to relocate to the midwest from either the east or west coast, particularly if you grew up in the suburbs.

FARM details the deceptively complicated life of a midwestern farm couple, their 3 kids, two dogs and assorted friends, crops, livestock, farm machinery, etc. Farming is certainly no walk in the park. The further you venture into this book, the more emotionally exhausted you feel as Rhodes brings home in brilliant detail all the pulls, pushes, tugs, restraints and jolts that go into this lifestyle. How do they do it?

Around the biographical data concerning the Bauer family, Rhodes introduces a staggering array of ancillary subjects, summarizing each with deadly accuracy coupled with a comfortable and easy-to-digest writing style. (Even soils and compactor mechanics are rendered comprehensible for those of us who never "tested well" on mechanical reasoning!)

For east/west coast new arrivals to the midwest who couldn't feel more lost if they'd just landed on Jupiter, this book sheds lots of light on many of the onstensibly incomprehensible mores, rhythms, habits and tendencies of midwestern life that persist in the behavioral patterns of even those who are more than a generation removed from the farm or the small town. With Rhodes as your guide, it's easier to understand the positive aspects of why they do what they do and less painful and exasperating to conform yourself to behaviors that will make them accept you more. I'd need a calculator to add up all the dumb mistakes I could have avoided over the past 10 years if I'd been armed with the information contained in Rhodes' book.

However, 1989 was a long time ago. Since then a new breed of "agri-preneurs" led by Ron Macher, Small Farm Today, the various editors of Storey Books and others is slowly guiding America's farmers away from traditional wholesale masochism toward direct marketing of specialty crops and livestock.

Rhodes' FARM and Macher's MAKING YOUR SMALL FARM PROFITABLE form a veritable old and new testament of American farming -- and an important primer for the aging suburban Boomer who wants to replace lifelong cluelessness with a practical body of knowledge with which to become at least a small part of the solution -- the voting booth, perhaps?!!

a pretty good effort for a city boy.......1999-04-23

As an american farmer, I was curious as to how a non-farmer would depict a way of life so diffrent from his own. I think Richard did a fine job in showing just how tough things can be sometimes and also the humor that goes along with this way of life. I did find a few technical errors that would not be noticeable to any one unfamilar with farming or its equipment. Overall this is a very good book for any one curious about "life down on the farm" or any one just looking for a good light read. I have read and reread this book several times and will probably do so again in the future. So there you have it, an endorsement from a farmer for a book about a farmer.

This book was so good that I had to limit myself to a few pages a day in order to make it last as long as possible. Dayton Hyde has such an appreciation of nature, wildlife, and the delicate relationship between man and his surroundings. It was just an incredible book.

One of my favorite books.......2003-09-26

I first read the diary of Mary Dodge Woodward several years ago. Because I love the sound of Mary's written voice, I've reread it several times. It never fails to enchant. Reading this book is almost like time traveling back to the Bonanza Farm days. I found this story so compelling that I actually searched out the site of this old farm and visited with it's current residents. The site of the old Dodge farm is just west of Sheyenne Road, a half mile west of the Garrison Diversion substation. I stood in the remains of Mary's old cellar, and showed my children the location of the old barn that had the skull and crossbones sign painted on it. The location of the machine shop continues to hold so much old oil from Mary's time that grass does not grow on the site. This is a wonderful book for anyone that likes to read about the early days of Dakota territory.

A friend loaned me The Checkered Years, and after reading it, I purchased two copies, one to give away and another to lend and ultimately to keep in my library. From the day-to-day writings of Mary Dodge Woodward, the reader begins to understand the central role of weather in the life of the early Dakota settlers - the awesome cold, wind, and heat; the blizzards, drought, and flood - all matter-of-factly but beautifully described in an unpretentious diary. The diary entries give a hint of the tremendous effort it took on Mary's part and that of her family to build up a large wheat farm, and along with that, the uncertainties she faced as a widow growing old. I wish the book had more background information in its introduction and more diary entries that, even though they probably would have seemed repetitive, may have given more focus to the people mentioned in the selections.
