      Book Description

In order to make sure that a not-for-profit is able to best complete its mission, a manager of the organization must determine how to allocate the resources it has today, and ensure the financial future of the organization by managing the funds to work for them in the long-term. This second volume of the widely-respected Mission-Based Management(r) Series outlines a not-for-profit organization's plan for financial success. It highlights the eight characteristics of financial empowerment, and provides the skills and concepts that a nonprofit organization and its managers will need to survive, including estimating cash needs, treating funders like valued customers, developing money-making businesses, determining the financial options that are available, and implementing an empowered budget process.

4 out of 5 stars International Fund Raising for Not-for-Profits.......2000-03-29

An absolutely indispensable guide to the complexities of international philanthropy. Alumni relations, corporate contributions and international organization pros should have this tome on their desks before writing next year's strategic plan. Yes it is expensive! But, it should both save you money and potentially make an enormous impact upon your mission. Although it is a growing field, (in which I am a practitioner) international fundraising has very few seasoned professionals. Wiley should be congratulated in selecting the best person imaginable for this daunting work-in-progress.

I found the definitions to be of value (although I do not always agree with some of the nuances) and quality of contributors to be first-rate. Sure, there a some weaknesses. But, as this is to be the first of several editions, it is bound to grow in value with each printing.

            5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2006-05-12

This is a fantastic resource for accountants entering into not-for-profit organizations for the first time or to review further for accountants wanting more clarity in their current management positions. This book covers everything and has excellent sections on accounting and reporting guidelines for the many entity types of not-for-profit organizations. Also has a chapter covering entities on public not-for-profit (GASB). This book truly is worth keeping in the office as a valuable resource.

4 out of 5 stars midnight accounting help.......1999-12-07

Sometimes you may be serving on the board of a nonprofit group and discover that your funder requires GAAP. Well what is that. This book will help you understand the nonprofit world of accounting. This work has been a resource that I have turned to at midnight myself aand have recommended many times. At times it is a little technical. But it helps to use some "accounting" language in the next board or committee meeting that you will be discussing budgets or finalcial presentatons.

Also, I have used this as a guideline when I consulted a small group that needed help with internal controls.

4 out of 5 stars This book is very valuable for Not-For-Profit Organizations.......1999-10-18

I felt this book was basically well written. It at times is a little too technical, but basically is easy to follow. I do find it an invaluable tool for reference information in the not-for-profit industry.

4 out of 5 stars It is helpful to me........1999-05-25

It was lucky to find this book. I'm a college student. I am preparing to take a AICPA exam. The library of my college doesn't have enough books about Not-for-Profit Organization accounting. This book gives me friendly and detailed explanations. well, a shortness of this book is a tedious text, such as one color text, no graphic figures. I just worried about objective judgements, because I didn't study other Not-fot-Profit books. Anyway, this book makes me come to Not-for-Profit accounting more closely. I'd like to recommend this book.

                  Book Description

The vital importance of the improved utilization and development of employee competence as part of a comprehensive strategy to improve the competitiveness of American business and industry is undisputed. In this book, European and American scholar/practitioners present a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary perspective on how to reorganize and re-design work activities aimed at developing workforce quality. Based on the premise that work itself is an important source of learning and competence development, the authors combine a sound conceptual framework with a practice-oriented guide to participatory processes that enhance both individual skill and competence and collective learning and organizational change. Placing the challenge of work and organization re-design within the macro context of the economic and industrial relations environment, the forces that foster or inhibit successful employee participation are brought into focus. Following the introduction of a conceptual model of competence development through work activity, a succinct historical overview of the evolution of different work design concepts in this century is presented. The relationship between work design for competence development and the challenges faced by today's enterprise become evident in the discussion of examples of currently emerging work design alternatives. Three case studies from the manufacturing and service sector illustrate the practical application of a framework for how to think about and approach work and organizational change. A variety of analytical tools and exercises are offered, among them a step-by-step procedure for initiating a participatory change process that avoids the pitfalls of many short-lived employee involvement programs. Issues of how to gain supervisor support and the role of unions in employee competence and skill development and implications for traditional compensation practices are addressed. Both a conceptual and a practical tool, this book is an important resource for executives, consultants, union leaders and human resource development scholars in search of ways to create competent organizations while protecting and enhancing employees' standard of living and quality of work life.

                      Book Description

Did socialist policies leave the economies of Eastern Europe unprepared for current privatization efforts? Under communist rule, were rural villages truly left untouched by capitalism? In this historical ethnography of rural Hungary, Martha Lampland argues not only that the transition to capitalism was well under way by the 1930s, but that socialist policies themselves played a crucial role in the development of capitalism by transforming conceptions of time, money, and labor.

Exploring the effects of social change thrust upon communities against their will, Lampland examines the history of agrarian labor in Hungary from World War I to the early 1980s. She shows that rural workers had long been subject to strict state policies similar to those imposed by collectivization. Since the values of privatization and individualism associated with capitalism characterized rural Hungarian life both prior to and throughout the socialist period, capitalist ideologies of work and morality survived unscathed in the private economic practices of rural society. Lampland also shows how labor practices under socialism prepared the workforce for capitalism. By drawing villagers into factories and collective farms, for example, the socialist state forced farmers to work within tightly controlled time limits and to calculate their efforts in monetary terms. Indeed, this control and commodification of rural labor under socialism was essential to the transformation to capitalism.
