Book Description
Fragile Evidence--a critique of reading assessment informed by newly emerging conceptualizations of validity and reliability--brings psychometric theory, reading theory, and social critique to bear on reading assessment. Taking its lead from contemporary psychological theory and other fields which ponder the role of evidence and argumentation in making claims about social issues, this text examines the historical and contemporary ways in which such claims have been made for reading assessment. Traditional individualized and standardized tests are critiqued from a variety of perspectives. The assumptions and operational bases of contemporary revisionist assessments (e.g., large-scale performance-based assessments, authentic assessments, etc.) are considered in terms of what they include and what they omit. Collected here in one volume is a systematic analysis of several different reading assessment instruments and conceptualizations of reading assessment, with particular emphasis on the evidence of reading they provide--a type of analysis usually found only in separate articles in journals and edited volumes. This important volume:
* Offers a systematic (rather than generalized) critique of popular standardized norm-referenced group and individualized measures of reading.
*Looks at the consequential validity of standardized tests.
* Includes interviews with stakeholders who consider the question of how to describe reading without making reference to standardized tests.
* Considers how tools such as miscue analysis influence reform.
* Provides a critical analysis of contemporary reform efforts.
Customer Reviews:
The emperor is naked.......2003-06-17
This book does an excellent job of pointing out internal and external validity and reliability issues with a wide range of standardized tests used to assess reading. I found it remarkable to note that most of these tests seldom (if at all) ask readers to read real connected text. The authors do point to some alternatives for reading assessment. Most knowledgeable literacy educators will already have a wide array of means for developing a full picture of any child's literacy development. This book opens the doors wide toward having a conversation around the reductionistic perspectives represented by standardized reading assessments, the purposes they are used for, and the impact they can have on children's literacy.
Fragile conclusions.......2000-05-15
The authors clearly care a great deal about how children are educated and evaluated. However, the conclusions that are drawn go too far. While these are steeped in much current literary theory, that theory itself is still very speculative with little firm research to support it. Furthermore, although the book roundly condems most current types of reading tests, no promising alternatives are put forth. The main mission of Fragile Evidence is not to reform standardized reading tests or tackle the difficult task of improving them, but rather to just get rid of them altogether. Still, there are a number of good points raised about test validity, reliability, and perhaps most importantly the poor uses to which tests are put.

Title: Critique: where art meets assessment: assessment doesn't have to mean students sitting at their desks taking standardized tests. In the arts, it is something quite different. Ms. Soep takes readers behind the scenes at Youth Radio, where young people are producing an audio documentary and engaging in the highly dramatic and motivating form of assessment known as critique.

Book Description
This manual summarizes the accumulation of information and knowledge of environmental microbiology in a single source. It details the natural fate of microorganisms in the environment as well as the intentional attempts to eliminate from the environment microorganisms that are pathogenic to humans or to plants and animals. The basic principles of environmental microbiology and general analytical methodologies, common across the range of the environments covered, are presented first. The core sections are structured with regard to the type of environmental medium being discussed. This landmark effort defines the study of environmental microbiology as we know it today and serves as an essential contribution to the literature. Customer Reviews:
Wow!!!.......2002-06-25
One word describes this book - wow! This book is a great source of information for everybody that is seriously interested in environmental microbiology. The wealth of information given in this book is divided into 98 "short stories", most of them on average 10 pages long, each written by a different scientist. Even though the book is presented in a very scientific manner, it reads surprisingly easy, although the reader should have some knowledge of microbiology and biochemistry. This is not a textbook! Those of you who are looking for a pretty picture book should look elsewhere. There are no fancy appendices or glossaries, no CD-ROM, just an index. Pictures and graphs are held to a minimum and are used for the more complex concepts only. At the end of each chapter, a bibliography invites to further exploration of the particular topic. Here are the main sections of the book: 1. Introduction to environmental microbiology, 2. General methodology, 3. Water microbiology in public health, 4. Aquatic environments, 5. Soil, Rhizosphere, and Phyllosphere, 6. Subsurface and landfills, 7. Aerobiology, 8. Biotransformation and biodegradation. In conclusion, this book has quality and substance, just as you would expect from a book published by the ASM.

Book Description
Environmental Microbiology: A Laboratory Manual is designed to meet the diverse requirements of upper division and graduate-level laboratory sessions in environmental microbiology. The experiments introduce students to the activities of various organisms and the analyses used to study them. The book is organized into three thematic sections: Soil Microbiology, Water Microbiology, and Environmental Biotechnology. The first section includes experiments on the soil as a habitat for microorganisms, and introduces the main types of soil microorganisms, how they interact with the soil, and the techniques used in their analysis. Experiments in the second section cover assays of microbial pathogens--bacteria, viruses, and protozoan parasites--used in food and water quality control as well as an exercise in applied bioremediation of contaminants in water. The final section on biotechnology includes applications of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of bacteria and the use of enrichment cultures and a computer-based, physiological test bank to isolate and identify a bacterium useful in bioremediation. Designed for maximum versatility and ease of use for both the student and instructor, each experiment is self-contained and includes theoretical, practical, and pedagogical material.
* New edition incorporates new experiments and the latest techniques

Book Description
The Manual of Immunological Methods represents the collaboration of the Canadian Network of Toxicology Centers, a non-profit network of university-based scientists dedicated to research, training, risk assessment, and communication. This manual provides detailed immunological methods that can be utilized by researchers or practitioners who want to enhance the successful application of this science. It emphasizes the need for continuously improving the quality of experiments performed and maintaining consistency in the results obtained. The Manual of Immunological Methods presents validated assays that are accompanied by a series of tools that will guide readers in performing their own laboratory work in the spirit of the Good Laboratory Practices. It covers specific methodologies including sample collection, preparation of cells, assay conditions, and data evaluation. Discussion of species differences and comparisons of a wide variety of species is an important feature. Both graduate students and practicing researchers in the areas of immunology and immunotoxicology will appreciate the Manual of Immunological Methods as a guide to standard operating procedures in the laboratory.

Transient Electronics: Pulsed Circuit Technology
ASIN: 3540437010 |
Book Description
This book deals with the design of pulsed, non-destructive coils for the generation of high magnetic fields. Its purpose is to provide the designer of a pulsed field facility, the curious student, and the scientist with a concise and comprehensive text describing every aspect of coil construction. Special emphasis is placed on first-order calculations, which allow estimations with pencil and paper and are important for an understanding of the basic design principles. These design formulas are then supplemented by numerical calculations and simulations.
