    Book Description

'Globalization' is one of the key concepts of our time. It is used by both the right and the left as the cornerstone of their analysis of the international economy and polity. In both political and academic discussions, the assumption is commonly made that the process of economic globalization is well under way and that this represents a qualitatively new stage in the development of international capitalism. But is there in fact such a thing as a genuinely global economy? Globalization in Question investigates this notion, providing a very different account of the international economy and stressing the possibilities for its continued and extended governance. The new edition of this best-selling text has been thoroughly revised, updated and expanded to take into account new issues which have become salient in the period since the first edition was published, including the impact of the internationalization of economic relations on the welfare state; the various debates about the concept of "competitiveness"; the Asian crisis; and the relationships between the North and the South in terms of their effects on wage rates and living standards.Globalization in Question, Second Edition, is a timely intervention into current discussions about the nature and prospects of globalization. The book has far-reaching implications which will be of interest to students and academics in a number of disciplines including politics, sociology, economics and geography, as well as to journalists and policy-makers.

4 out of 5 stars Globalization in Question (1996 version).......2003-10-23

This is a book about globalization that has a simple and well-defended thesis: that the debate about the extent of globalization in the world economy is polarized between those who say it is already globalized and those who say globalization is nonexistent or irrelevant. They argue that the truth (as usual) lies somewhere in between.
-- there is a vast difference between a strictly global economy and a highly internationalized economy in which most companies trade from their bases in distinct national economies. In the former national policies are futile, since economic outcomes are determined wholly by world market forces and by the internal decisions of transnational companies. In the latter national policies remain viable, indeed they are essential in order to preserve the distinct styles and strengths of the national economic base and the companies that trade from it (p. 185).

Because the academic debate is between polarized positions, it has been less than helpful as a guide to political actors. The myth of extreme globalization, in the author's view, "exaggerates the degree of our helplessness in the face of contemporary economic forces," (p. 6) while the denial of globalization makes it difficult to address the very real problems of governance posed by an "internationalized" world economy.

Governance is defined here (somewhat vaguely) as the "control of an activity by some means such that a range desired outcomes is attained..." (p. 184). It is meant to represent activities carried out not just by governments of nation-states but also by supranational organizations like the European Union, transnational actors like the multinational corporations, and subnational actors like the regional and provincial governments of federal national systems. While internationalization of the world economy creates incentives and opportunities for international governance that bypasses or transcends national governments, national governments will still have a role, say the authors, in assuring that the new governance structures are coherent and (if coherent) democratic.

The book contains some interesting arguments about the changing nature of governance in Europe, especially since the formation of the European Union. In Chapter 7, the authors assert that responsibility for governance in Europe has shifted to some extent toward the Union level, but also to some extent toward the local and regional (provincial) level, in order to compensate for the inability of national governments to address certain problems. According to the authors, "Regions are small enough to possess 'intimate knowledge' and yet sufficiently large to aid and regulate local economies through a significant revenue base." [p. 167] However, the authors also assert that the national level will remain significant because the "Union could not conceivably create central institutions fast enough and with enough legitimacy to achieve an effective federal-regional division of labor, marginalizing national government sin most economic regulatory functions." [p. 168] As a result, "Europe will be divided into successful and failing regions.." [p. 168]. While this is not a very cheerful prediction, it is a well-argued one.

In general, I found the authors' arguments about the continued relevance of national governments persuasive. I also liked their point about the increased importance of subnational and supranational regions. However, I found the discussion of the activities of multinational corporations (MNCs) in Chapter 4 to be rather dull and long-winded, despite the fact that the authors were presenting their own analysis of newly collected data. The main assertion made in that chapter was that MNCs are not very global yet, since most of their production (and other important activities) is still national, and most of their international activity is with neighboring countries. This is not a particularly novel point, and it could have been made in a crisper and more interesting manner.

Chapter 2 does a good job of placing the debate about economic globalization in historical perspective by looking at data on internationalization prior to World War I. The main point of this chapter is to show that the current upturn in internationalization is not unprecedented.

Chapter 3 provides a useful overview of data on the growth of foreign direct investment since the end of World War II. It is a little deficient in its discussion of the rapid increase in Japanese FDI since the 1980s, but it does a good job of describing the general phenomenon. Toward the end of the chapter however, the authors attempt to speculate about whether the growth in investment activity by multinational corporations can help to reduce global economic inequalities, but only rather cursorily and inconclusively, thus weakening the impact of the earlier empirical arguments.

Chapter 5 of the book is devoted to the question of whether the developing countries of the Third World have benefited from internationalization. In this chapter, the authors argue that most of the people of the Third World have not benefited from internationalization but that they must do so in the future, even if this means greater market intervention on the part of the world's governments. Hirst and Thomson are pessimistic about the ability of Third World countries to copy the policies of rapidly growing Asian countries like Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea. They agree with Paul Krugman that the rapid growth of the Asian newly industrializing countries (NICs) will not last because of the exhaustion of the benefits from converting from agricultural to industrial pursuits. Finally, they point out that NICs depended on relatively open markets for their exports in North America and Europe, and that the growing protectionism in the industrialized countries reduces the likelihood of future success in export-led growth strategies. The main changes the authors advocate to produce "a fairer world" are more foreign aid, "ethical private capital investment," and policies to improve the terms of trade for developing countries [p. 120]. I found this chapter to be overly pessimistic about the future prospects of developing countries and weak on prescriptions for change.

I was disappointed by the authors' avoidance of any serious attempt to define rigorously the key concepts of globalization and governance, but, on the whole, I found this book to be well written and well argued. I would recommend it as supplementary reading for upper division undergraduate and beginning graduate students. Its primary strength is that it contains a reasoned and reasonable thesis about the limits of contemporary economic globalization.

5 out of 5 stars Antidote for the globalist myth.......1998-09-26

The authors make this "Globalization In Question" a great antidote for people (especially in the Business and Administration area) that can't stop repeating that "the world is globalized, the world is globalized" like parrots. It's very pleasing to have some kind of skepticism about this whole discussion. In countries of the Third World, this talk about globalization is particularly dangerous since glued to it comes the neoliberal talk. And don't be scared by all the "economics". After reading this one, I can garantee that you will pay more attention to the books you're buying about the "global world".

      Book Description

While it is often acknowledged that we live in a "postindustrial" age, our economic concepts have lagged far behind our postmodern sensibility. In this incisive new work, the well-known sociologist, Fred Block, sheds obsolete and shopworn economic analysis by presenting a bold, sweeping reconceptualization of the economy. Postindustrial Possibilities provides a fresh understanding of the dynamics of postindustrial change while offering a roadmap for future economic thinking.
Block takes as his point of departure the tired concepts of neo-classical economics which, while still dominant, fall short as tools for comprehending contemporary economic forces. In Block's mind, the failure to revise the concepts of industrial economics means that the reality of today's economy is increasingly understood as "through a glass darkly." Intent on reinvigorating thinking in this area, Block masterfully critiques the central categories of neo-classical economics, such as the market, labor, and capital.
Block argues that the neo-classical tradition has obscured the fact that capitalist prosperity has been built not on "free markets" but rather on systematic constraints on market freedom. He further suggests that measurements of capital have become increasingly problematic and that the concept obscures the critical sources of productivity within organizations. In his far-reaching analysis of the Gross National Product, Block shows that there is a growing divergence between the factors that determine people's well-being and trends in measured GNP.
Postindustrial Possibilities sets forth a new intellectual paradigm that might be called "Qualitative Growth." One of its primary foci is a shift toward improved product quality and greater priority for various non-commodity satisfactions such as leisure, interesting work, economic security and a safe and clean environment. It also promotes a recognition that greater economic efficiency rests not on infusions of capital but on cooperative labor relations and on institutional reform.
Wide-ranging, intellectually vibrant and lucid, Postindustrial Possibilities will engender controversy and debate. It is an enormous contribution that social scientists and policymakers will need to come to terms with.

You will love this book for its insights and constructive approach in the neo-conservative tradition. It requires a understanding of both economics and ethics (Catholic Social Teaching).
You won't agree with this book if you're in the socialist or New Deal tradition.

4 out of 5 stars Sensible Ethics, sensible economics.......1999-11-29

An unusually sophisticated joining of ethics and economics -especially interesting if you are informed about Catholic Social Teaching.

I bought this book for my 7 year old. She picked him for her class project and she needed to read his biography from a book, not from the internet. George Washington Carver was definitely an inspiration to his peers as well as all generations that came after him. My daughter really got into this book! She was fascinated by Mr. Carver because he invented peanut butter. I would recommend all school-age kids to read about Mr. Carver, he is truly a woven part of American history.

In 1976, NASA's Viking orbiters photographed the surface of Mars and sent pictures back to Earth. What some people see in these pictures, a distinctly humanoid face, has been hotly debated ever since, prompting the question, "Are there artificial structures on Mars?" If you haven't heard of the face on Mars, then you haven't been paying attention to the news about the photos taken by the recent Mars Global Surveyor mission or Art Bell's late night radio talk show about paranormal phenomena or even the covers of the supermarket tabloids. The face is nearly everywhere.

The Case for the Face examines the original NASA images using a battery of different techniques, from stereo imaging to fractal analysis, in an effort to determine if the face is simply a trick of the light or a structure fabricated by an extraterrestrial intelligence. Rather than handing out unchallenged assumptions, The Case for the Face explains how the evidence is gathered, what tests are used for analysis, and gives the reader a crash course in geometry, Martian geology, and computer-image enhancement. The authors present a strong case for the belief that the face, and many other structures in the area, were artificially constructed. In doing so, they also make a compelling argument for opening a new era of manned space exploration and further investigation of this enigmatic portrait in stone. --Brian Patterson

Don't let your preconceived notions about what is possible and what is not possible prevent you from reading this book. It is objective and reasonable and quite possibly the best book on the subject I have read. Keep an open mind and understand the scientists who wrote this book just want a chance for a scientific study of the evidence, but the current climate at NASA is denying them the opportunity. How many other marvelous discoveries have been lost to us because of other people's closed minds? Why is it so impossible for people to believe there may have been an ancient civilization on Mars? We have them on Earth! They came from somewhere! Let them have their objective investigation, but don't close the door on the means to find out the truth, one way or the other. If the truth is stifled then we all loose out on what may be the most profound discovery of human history. We need to know one way or the other!

I can drive to Utah and Arizona tomorrow and see over 1000 rock formations, in a 1-week trip, which all resemble something, from Snoopy on his doghouse(near Sedona), to giant mittens(Monument Valley), to huge arches and phallic symbols(Arches Nat'l Park). Oh, and there are also a million rocks that look like...uhhhhhh....nothing but ROCKS. Big surprise!

The truth is, human beings throughout history have some bizarre need to look at things in the natural world(rock formations, clouds, etc) and somehow correlate them to man-made formations or animated objects. When a rock or a volcano or a canyon or whatnot, especially in conjunctions with shadows, the right combination of light, and viewed from a specific angle or distance, looks like some kind of symmetrical man-made form, there is a word for this kind of phenomenon; COINCIDENCE. With the billions of rocks on this world and other planets, I find it quite comical that people are doofus enough to not realize that, given enough wind and rain and erosion, a LOT or rocks are going to look like something besides a rock.

"The Case for the Face" is a thoroughly sensible and compelling account of a small handful of resarchers with the intellectual clout to tackle an enigma mainstream science has labled "off-limits": the possible existence of alien artifacts in our solar system. The contributors raise fascinating possibilities that we would be wise to examine in depth. Validating the existence of probable artificial structures on Mars is an opportunity we can't afford to miss through fear of offending the status quo.

This book is a valuable tool and aid to anyone interested in obtaining certain information about the anomalies located on Mars. Some chapters are very interesting and provide compelling evidence for alien artifacts while others are very dry leaving the reader slightly bored. The book can definitely be used as a research aid from the library, but I do not recommend it for casual reading purposes. Although quite imaginative and informative I believe there are probably better books to read on the Martian anomalies than this one. I would consider other sources before choosing to purchase this book.

                        Book Description

The papers in this volume cover a wide range of subjects covering the most recent developments in Celestial Mechanics from the theoretical point of nonlinear dynamical systems to the application to real problems. We emphasize the papers on the formation of planetary systems, their stability and also the problem of habitable zones in extrasolar planetary systems. A special topic is the stability of Trojans in our planetary system, where more and more realistic dynamical models are used to explain their complex motions: besides the important contribution from the theoretical point of view, the results of several numerical experiments unraveled the structure of the stable zone around the librations points. This volume will be of interest to astronomers and mathematicians interested in Hamiltonian mechanics and in the dynamics of planetary systems.

                            Book Description

The Earth's evolution is a part of the evolution of the Solar System and of matter itself. Abundances of chemical elements can be explained only by going back to the formation of planets and earlier, to the nucleosynthesis processes. Comparisons with other planets, at different stages of development are necessary in the study of the formation and growth of the Earth's core. The same can be said of the global mobility of the outer layers of the Earth - the lithosphere. Consequently, the Earth's evolution can not be treated separately, but should be described within a broader framework.

This fifth volume in the series presents ideas on evolution of the Universe, the Planetary System and the Earth. It explains the formation and early evolution of the Earth and Planets, presenting an introduction and providing background to problems of the Earth's evolution and plate tectonics – the problems to be presented in the last volume of the s

                                Book Description

The Origin of Stars and Planetary Systems is a collection of tutorial reviews that critically and systematically discuss the current state of our knowledge of star formation and early stellar evolution, from the genesis of giant molecular clouds to the birth of young stars and their surrounding planetary systems.
The chapters are written at the graduate student level by a group of twenty internationally distinguished scientists. The emphasis is on fundamentals rather than recent research results. The book thus provides a rigorous treatment of the basic empirical and theoretical foundations of modern star formation research. The book is a unique reference, based on the authors' own pioneering research.
Readership: Primary or supplementary text for graduate courses on star formation. Basic reference for professional scientists needing a solid background in the area.

                                4 out of 5 stars A great introduction.......2000-05-18

This is a nice introduction to the field of star and planet formation. It is a bit more instructive than the similar _Protostars and Planets IV_, meaning that many of the chapters are genuinely useful at the graduate student level. However not all of the chapters are written equally well. Some contain breath-takingly comprehensive looks at their subject matters (e.g., the chapters by Chris McKee, Telemachios Mouschovios, Rafael Bachiller), while others could have been fleshed out a little more. All in all though, the book is a great companion to the larger (but same priced) _PP IV_. Although it was published first and so is slightly more dated and it is not as comprehensive as that other volume, I would recommend this over _PP IV_ for students in astrophysics on a limited budget--mainly because of its readability for second year and above graduate students.

                                  Book Description

Several major breakthroughs in the last decade have helped contribute to the emerging field of astrobiology. Focusing on these developments, this fascinating book explores some of the most important problems in this field. It examines how planetary systems formed, and how water and the biomolecules necessary for life were produced. It then focuses on how life may have originated and evolved on Earth. Building on these two themes, the final section takes the reader on a search for life elsewhere in the Solar System. It presents the latest results of missions to Mars and Titan, and explores the possibilities of life in the ice-covered ocean of Europa. This interdisciplinary book is an enjoyable overview of this exciting field for students and researchers in astrophysics, planetary science, geosciences, biochemistry, and evolutionary biology. Book Description

`Are there other planetary systems like ours? Other planets like ours? Is there life elsewhere in the Universe?' So asks Dr. Lew Allen Jr. in the Foreword. In December of 1992, theorists, observers, and instrument builders gathered at the California Institute of Technology to discuss the search for answers to these questions. The International Conference, entitled `Planetary Systems: Formation, Evolution, and Detection' and supported through NASA's newly formed TOPS (Toward Other Planetary Systems) program, was the first of a series of conferences uniting researchers across disciplines and political boundaries to share thoughts and information on planetary systems. The conference was sponsored by NASA, hosted by JPL at Caltech, and endorsed by the 1992 International Space Year Association.
These proceedings include discussions of topics ranging from stellar, disk, and planetary formation to new ways of searching for other stellar systems containing planets. The authors represent a wide range of nationalities, disciplines, and points of view. The second international conference took place in December of 1993.
