Book Description
An eye-opening look at the phenomenon of school and workplace shootings in America, Going Postal explores the rage-murder phenomenon that has plagued — and baffled — America for the last three decades, and offers some provocative answers to the oft-asked question, "Why?" By juxtaposing the historical place of rage in America with the social climate that has existed since the 1980s — when Reaganomics began to widen the gap between executive and average-worker earnings — the author crafts a convincing argument that these schoolyard and office massacres can be seen as modern-day slave rebellions. He presents many fascinating and unexpected cases in detail. Like slave rebellions, these massacres are doomed, gory, sometimes even inadvertently comic, and grossly misunderstood. Taking up where Bowling for Columbine left off, this book seeks to set these murders in their proper context and thereby reveal their meaning.

good stuff.......2007-08-01
It may not be politically correct or very American, but this book really drives home some of the major problems in American society, well presented and not willing to pull punches, it may be to close to the truth for most americans
Former federal employee concurs.......2007-07-26
Mark Ames must have had some hardened life. He gets it right on the money when he describes the institutional torment that leads to destructive behavior. In the end, when the institution takes everything including truth, compassion and dignity, the rational response is rage, murder and rebellion.
This is a well-researched book, put out by someone who spent a lot of time researching and documenting the pattern. Ames' unlikely connection between slavery and the working man is made convincingly, with slavery occasionally being the more humane of the two.
I left government service recently, after watching three supervisors fall prey to love-hate dependency-based work relationships. All of them eventually succumbed to rage. I spent time speaking with other office employees, both former and current, who lost their emotional balance and faded into oblivion, whether fired or effectively incapacitated. I had to read this book to understand the dynamics behind this less-than-rare phenomenon. Ames' validation is a double-edged sword. What is frightening is the notion that this oppression occurs frequently, but is never documented until someone commits mass murder. Ames notes in his book that rebellion occurs with great infrequency, as the unknown is always more frightening than the known, however unpleasant.
"Going Postal" is a must-read book, although it is less gory than it is reflective. Ames is an excellent historian and consolidator of relationship dynamics. His ability to interview his subjects and pick up on the details -- sometimes even humorous in a macabre way -- makes this a facinating documentary.
Duck!.......2007-07-18
This book gives a frightening insight into the harsh policies of corporate America and the so-called "wackos" who rebel.
A Society without God.......2006-07-07
Contrasting the opinion of a reviewer before me, in his work, Mark Ames very clearly shows the motivations, the reasons of conduct of slaves in the past and pupils and workers today. He impressively shows how everyone, starting at nursery school, is everyone's enemy and how this leads to anger which sometimes is disposed of in the form of a workplace/school shooting, more oftentimes however in imitaging the bahaviour of foremen/teachers/bosses once on is in their position. Blame in America is always cast on the weak, the poor, the helpless. And in the end, the slaves worship their master because he, their tormentor, is what they desire to be. From page 242 of the book: "Why do we need to celebrate, with a kind of malicious pride, our worsening condition? What the hell is wrong with us? Have we lost all of our dignity?"
A mindset, such as the American, which measures everything in terms of material success, popularity and immediate gratification cannot support notions such as solidarity, sympathy or justice. This book is an upright tome on the degeneration of American society in it's last days. Sadly, the book does not portait ways out of the vicious circle of hate, which is the only lack the work has. Buy it, read it and change your life!
Amazing!.......2006-05-05
Going Postal is the most important book of the 21st century. Out of everything I have read about workplace and school shootings, I think Mark Ames finally gets it right. Unfortunately, no mainstream press dared to pick this up, but I think the book will change the minds of anyone who happens to read it. I definately will recommend this book to everyone.

A quick read - but missing some important points.......2007-09-01
This is a quick read and a useful primer to workplace violence. That being said, I thought the author was a bit unrealistic in more than a few areas. First, if your employer doesn't have a workplace violence policy that doesn't leave you with a lot of support. In fact, you could be viewed as an alarmist if you suggest one. Second, anyone who thinks their co-workers are going to be able to help (with specific training or prior experience) in a workplace violence incident are, I suggest, wishful thinkers. Bottom line - you have to look out for yourself in the workplace, just as you do on the street outside. However, I thought the biggest missing element was also the most obvious: if you have a real wacko at work that you are convinced is about to "go postal" - quit the job. I don't care what the excuse is, it's simply not worth risking your life over a job - especially where your employer won't keep you safe. Think about it. If your company is big enough that there are most likely wackos that you don't know about, then this book might help raise your awareness.
True story: one of my clients (I'm a consultant) terminated two long-time middle-level managers. My contact said that several of the co-workers thought one of the ex-employees was going to "lose it". My first comment - did they make a discreet check with that ex-employee's home town police department to see if they had a gun permit? (In this state you need a permit for any kind of firearm.) Of course, that fell on deaf ears. And guess what? The layout of the offices is such that the executive offices are in the back of the building in ambush territory. Fortunately, nothing happened (so far.) To this day I'm bit on edge when I go to see that client, and stay close to the exists during the meetings. As they say in the book, somewhere between Condition Yellow and Condition Orange.
Essential Reading!.......2005-05-27
Did you know that according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, workplace homicide is the leading cause of death among female workers in the United States and the second leading cause of death among men? 18,000 people a week are victimized by some sort of violence in the workplace in this country alone! Understanding how to protect yourself and your employees is indispensable knowledge.
I was privileged to receive an advanced copy of this important work to review before its official publication and found it well written, informative, and packed with essential information. Loren Christensen is one of my favorite authors. A retired police officer, Vietnam veteran, and 7th Dan black belt he really knows his stuff. For the record, I have a library of over 230 martial arts books. Many are in mint condition; stuff I've read only once, didn't finish, or never got around to. Christensen's are all dog-eared with sticky notes and scribbles in the margins, solid material I read over and over again. As always his advice is practical, useful, and easy to read.
In 'Surviving Workplace Violence' Christensen does a great job of making readers aware of the threat and presents solid strategies for keeping us safe. It is pretty short, a mere 105 pages, yet extremely valuable nevertheless. Its pithiness positions it as an excellent reference manual that just about anyone can read and understand in a few short hours. Clearly you cannot become an expert in such a short time yet the materials herein could literally save your life.
The vignettes in this book are startling and very informative. For example, it describes a situation where a 70-year-old salesman attacked and killed his former boss with a mason's hammer several months after she fired him for spitting on another employee. This clearly points out that just about anyone can be a potential hazard. Christensen describes warning signs (employee behaviors) that may indicate a higher likelihood of threat.
The author covers essential survival strategies for the employer (e.g., company policies/committees), as well as for the employee. The latter include awareness, stages of alertness (i.e., white, yellow, orange, red, black), hiding places, escape routes, incident response, combat breathing, mental imagery, and fighting back. He offers specific techniques that can be used against common weapons (e.g., knife, handgun, rifle) as well as descriptions of how to use common implements (e.g., stapler, pen, coffee cup) to help you fight back should you be forced to do so.

Product Description
This book is the unique, proactive viewpoint of three professionals who are gravely concerned about the devastating, deep wound effects of violence and bloodshed in our modern school workplace. These highly skilled practitioners, each from his own field of expertise, pour into this book their combined decades of hands-on experience in three main forces involved in this disruptive trauma our dedicated educators and staff must grapple with daily. (Isn't their focus supposed to be just to educate, mature, and enlighten our children?) But now, three over-arching, non-educational concerns have crashed the school house and shoved education aside: (1) the legal rights, concerns and recourse for all parties involved with violence; (2) aberrant student behavior and how to manage it; and (3) health-safety protection. This team-writing approach to this festering problem eliminates your need to research data in the three professions comprising this book and areas of school violence. From the Introduction....

From the supplier: Many companies have been reluctant to purchase insurance to cover employees for workplace violence since the policies are only cover death or injury in the workplace, which leads employees to suspect hazardous working conditions. Cigna Reinsurance: Life, Accident, Health has developed a rider to Accidental Death and Dismemberment policies that will cover the employee in the workplace and anywhere else. Cigna expects this policy to be more popular with employers and their employees.

It Was Good But...........2007-03-14
I learned some about pigs in this book but... have you ever tried to render your own lard??
This book says just to boil pig fat in water for awhile
That won't make lard
Took me four tries to finally get it right
Practical experience taught me more than this book
Learning about pigs.......2007-01-10
This is a great starter for raising pigs. It gives a lot of the basics on different breeds of pigs. The book is very helpful. Thank you.
Geared toward farmer, not homesteader..........2004-05-23
Overall, I would consider this a good but not great book. I was left with a vague feeling of incompleteness after reading it.
For example, it had several pictures of pigs with 'good muscling' (or 'nice topline' or 'great frame' or whatever). Granted, I'm a novice at pigs but it would be nice if it had pictures (preferably side-by-side) of an example of 'poor muscling' (or whatever) so I can see the difference.
I also found the 'butchering' section to be lacking. For example, when 'scalding' a carcass, it only talks about dipping the entire carcass into the hot water. Nowhere does it even mention dipping out the hot water and pouring it over the carcass (which is more manageable for a large pig). And the actual butchering (cutting up) part is minimal ('separate the carcass into the larger primal cuts with a butcher's knife').
My impression is that this book is geared more toward a small farmer wanting to raise a small herd for profit as opposed to a homesteader wanting to raise 1-3 pigs as food. It's just a different mindset. So - if you're a farmer - I would rate this book a '5'. A homesteader would still find it useful but not complete.
(I can't believe that pot-bellied pigs aren't even mentioned anywhere.)
A must for Raising Pigs...Tonasket, WA 2002.......2002-05-02
This is a must for pig raisers! I should know, I raise 5 breeding sows and write my own farm books, and I even mention this book in my resources section! It's that much of a needed book for pig farmers. Every subject you want to know about pigs is found in this book, from showing at the fair, breeding the pigs, to the business aspect of running a farm...
Great Book.......2002-03-28
My husband and I were thinking about raising pigs and bought this book. We read it cover to cover and found a lot of valuable information. We raised two pigs last summer and referenced this book constantly; it is always close at hand. If you are considering raising 1 pig or 50 this book will come in handy.
