      Book Description

`If there in one word to describe the issues addressed by Peter Gronn in The New Work of Educational Leaders it's "timely" And if there is one book that education policy makers, system CEOs and education ministers should find the time to read, this is it' - Educare News

`This book is essential reading fro those involved in educational leadership and policy development. This work is also valuable for those interested in the locally organized and interactionally achieved context of institutional work' - Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics if Education

`Though based in Australia, Peter Gronn shows familiarity with the British education system, and this boo is relevant to those in the compulsory and post-compulsory sectors interested in the themes of education leadership' - Learning and Skills Research

In The New Work of Educational Leaders, Peter Gronn provides a new framework for understanding leadership practice. The work of leaders will increasingly be shaped by three overriding but contradictory themes: design; distribution; and disengagement. These are the `architecture' of school and educational leadership.

Designer-leadership is the use of mandatory standards of assessment and accreditation for school leaders, such as the National Qualification for Headship (NPQH) in the United Kingdom and the (Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) standards in the United States. Distributed patterns of leadership have developed in response to the intensification of school leaders' work under policy regimes of site-based and school self-management. Disengagement describes a culture of abstention, in which school systems anticipate leadership succession problems, such as projected shortages and recurring recruitment difficulties.

            Description:
The use of knowledge-based systems (KBSs) that use evidential reasoning for land-cover mapping derived from remotely sensed images is spreading widely. In recent years, KBSs utilizing the Dempster-Shafer Theory of Evidence (D-S ToE) have been found most successful in a wide range of remote sensing applications, partly because of their ability to combine diverse information sources. An important feature of the D-S ToE is that it provides a measure for the evidential support (belief) accumulated for each object class at each pixel. Despite the importance of cumulative belief values (CBVs) in representing the weighting of supportive versus conflicting evidence for each class, their analysis has received little attention in the literature. The objective of the present study was to assess the performance (represented by the kappa coefficient) of a KBS based on D-S ToE and of an unsupervised classification (ISODATA), with relation to the CBV distribution determined for each class. This was done for the task of crop recognition in a wide heterogeneous region in Israel. It was found that while KBS performs very well in cases of conflicts and moderate support, the US classification performed well only in cases of homogeneity and uniqueness. Crop recognition by means of KBS was applied to almost one-third of the country's agricultural areas, and it provided a high level of differentiation among seven crop types, orchards and natural vegetation types.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive resource on Jupiter.......2005-11-22

Oh, yes, there are several excellent books about Jupiter for the layman. But if you have a technical background and want to learn about Jupiter, why not get the real thing? And this book is indeed the one to get. It has an introduction, twenty-six excellent papers by noted experts in their fields, and a CD with some additional color images. It contains information discovered by the Voyager, Galileo, and even the Cassini missions, as well as from a variety of telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope.

The book starts out by addressing questions of Jupiter's origin and interior. A major question is the ratio of helium to hydrogen. That value has to be above the minimum set by cosmology (Big Bang nucleosynthesis), given that the high metallicity of both Jupiter and the Sun suggest that we're not dealing with primordial matter. And one would expect it to be less than the ratio for our Sun, given that the Sun has produced some helium by burning hydrogen. But measurements of this ratio seem a little low, and we're treated to some possible explanations.

Next, we learn about the Jovian atmosphere. An interesting question here has been the amount of water and its significance. And we learn about some of the photochemistry of the stratosphere. As the editors say, "if you like your hydrocarbons fricasseed and you like to dance under a strobe of X-rays, then Jupiter's middle and upper atmosphere is the place to be."

After this, we move a little higher up, to discuss Jovian dust, including Jupiter's rings. How thick are they? How dense? And are the gossamer rings really composed of micron-sized particles and smaller? We then are introduced to the outer satellites and the Trojan asteroids.

There are papers discussing the major satellites in some detail. We learn about Io, its tidal heating, and its volcanoes. And about Europa, including its tides and tectonics. There's material about Europa's Laplace mean motion resonance with Io and Ganymede. And a discussion of astrobiological issues: if Europa has liquid water under its crust, and if there are hydrothermal vents, it is possible that life exists there. There is a paper about the atmospheres of the satellites, and another about radiation effects on satellite surfaces.

Jupiter's large size and 10-hour rotation period are responsible for an immense Jovian magnetosphere, and the final papers in this book discuss various aspects of it. We learn about magnetospheric interactions with satellites. And about the Io plasma torus. And there is a paper on the dynamics of the magnetosphere. One fundamental question here which still has not been totally resolved is the process by which this magnetosphere manages to accelerate the Io plasma from basically a few electron volts to well over 100 thousand electron volts. And there is a fascinating paper about Jupiter's aurora.

The final paper is on the Jovian radiation belts. Issues include the basic electron energy spectrum in the inner radiation belts and the wave modes that may be present there. And there is a practical issue as well: if we don't know what radiation fluxes we're facing, it will be tougher to design the next deep space probe to Jupiter.

If you are interested in studying any aspect of the Jovian system, this book is a good place to start. I highly recommend it.

                Book Description

This textbook is intended to be used in a lecture course for college students majoring in Earth Sciences. Planetary science provides an opportunity for these students to apply a wide range of subject matter pertaining to the Earth to the study of other planets and their principal satellites. In this way, planetary science tends to unify subjects in the Earth Sciences that are traditionally taught separately. Therefore, planetary science is well-suited to be taught as a capstone course for senior undergraduates in geology departments and as an introduction to the solar system in astronomy departments. Both groups of students will benefit because planetary science bridges the gap between geology and astronomy and it prepares geologists and astronomers to participate actively in the on-going exploration of the solar system.

The subject matter is presented in 24 chapters that lead the reader through the solar system starting with historical perspectives on space exploration and the development of the scientific method. The presentations concerning the planets and their satellites emphasize that their origin and subsequent evolution can be explained by applications of certain basic principles of physics, chemistry, and celestial mechanics and that the surface features of the solid bodies in the solar system can be interpreted by means of the principles of geology.

                  Book Description

                  G. Beutler's Methods of Celestial Mechanics is a coherent textbook for students as well as an excellent reference for practitioners. The first volume gives a thorough treatment of celestial mechanics and presents all the necessary mathematical details that a professional would need. The reader will appreciate the well-written chapters on numerical solution techniques for ordinary differential equations, as well as that on orbit determination. In the second volume applications to the rotation of earth and moon, to artificial earth satellites and to the planetary system are presented. The author addresses all aspects that are of importance in high-tech applications, such as the detailed gravitational fields of all planets and the earth, the oblateness of the earth, the radiation pressure and the atmospheric drag. The concluding part of this monumental treatise explains and details state-of-the-art professional and thoroughly-tested software for celestial mechanics. The accompanying CD-ROM enables readers to employ this software themselves and also serves as to illustrate and reinforce the related theoretical concepts.

                              Book Description

The classical restricted three-body problem is of fundamental importance because of its applications in astronomy and space navigation, and also as a simple model of a non-integrable Hamiltonian dynamical system. A central role is played by periodic orbits, of which many have been computed numerically. This is the second volume of an attempt to explain and organize the material through a systematic study of generating families, the limits of families of periodic orbits when the mass ratio of the two main bodies becomes vanishingly small. We use quantitative analysis in the vicinity of bifurcations of types 1 and 2. In most cases the junctions between branches can now be determined. A first-order approximation of families of periodic orbits in the vicinity of a bifurcation is also obtained. This book is intended for scientists and students interested in the restricted problem, in its applications to astronomy and space research, and in the theory of dynamical systems.

                                Book Description

Although most people have some knowledge of the essential structure of the Solar System, few are familiar with the large and varied array of objects that travel with and between the planets in their journeys around the Sun.

Imaging techniques from Earth continue to improve, while missions such as Voyager, Galileo and the Hubble Space Telescope have yielded many excellent images. Most significantly of all, several missions in recent years have shown a huge diversity of objects in close-up for the first time. The book will take advantage of the rich pool of images that is available, to tell a story of the Solar System that has not been told before.

Smaller Bodies will be a collection of approximately 72 stunning images, all from the public domain but not hitherto gathered into a coherent collection, with supporting text and graphics. Each main image will be accompanied by a graphic showing the location in the Solar System of the featured object. All of these graphics will be based in a simple template providing a simple representation of the Solar System. Text will not be extensive, allowing page design to have a high priority, and will be of three kinds. ‘Main text’ (approximately 200 words) will provide stimulating introduction and some key ideas. Text headed ‘The object(s)’ (25-75 words) will provide a brief description of featured objects. Text headed ‘The image’ (25-75 words) will provide information on the source of the image and some brief technical information where required (such as in describing use of false color).

The book is intended for anybody who lives in solar orbit and takes a general interest in the solar neighborhood.
