A state-of-the-art review of human services programs in the workplace

From their roots in the occupational alcohol programs in the 1940s, human services programs within organizations have grown exponentially. However, the seamless integration of each facet of those expanding programs into a cohesive whole has proven to be a major challenge. The Integration of Employee Assistance, Work/Life, and Wellness Services presents a comprehensive cross-section of experienced professionals who discuss their efforts to fully integrate employee assistance, work/life, and wellness services. This in-depth examination of concepts and practical application of integrated programs in sponsoring organizations provides practical strategies to make your own organization's human services more useful, and therefore help employees be more productive. The latest research is clearly presented, with a wide-ranging review of current program models in notable organizations that illustrates exactly what is most effective in the field of work-based human services.

The Integration of Employee Assistance, Work/Life, and Wellness Services provides a beneficial perspective on the present state of employee assistance, work/life and wellness services in the workplace, and then takes a detailed look at the economics of integration with a value-benefit analysis. Other chapters include program models at various organizations presented by the professionals fully involved in their implementation. Integration strategies are carefully described for academic settings; external service providers; internal programs; hybrid models; and the public sector. An in-depth critical analysis of integration, its effectiveness, and its real value is presented, along with a chapter on the future of the integration of work-based human services programs. The text is extensively referenced with helpful tables and diagrams to enhance clarity of ideas.

The Integration of Employee Assistance, Work/Life, and Wellness Services examines the unique aspects of integrated programs at:

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life!.......2004-03-31

This has to be the best book ever written. It is just soooo full of emotion. Like when Maddy, the little girl with spaz attacks, got out of her wheelchair and walked... I sobbed like a little be-otch. I also love the way the author compares water management to the historic fight for equal rights for inbred hillbilly amputees. And the way he uses Fargo as a metaphore for the universal quest for spiritual truth, blending traditional Christian principles with Eastern religious archetypes is simply Salingeresque in nature. This book is food for the soul! You will never look at Irrigated Agriculture the same way again...

                          Book Description

`This book is a very useful collection for those interested in the impact of agriculture on water resources, and on the allocation of water resources within the agricultural system. It pulls together most of the important theoretical papers since the early 1980s on the economics of non-point pollution control. The book also shows how interdisciplinary modelling has improved our understanding of water quality and quantity issues, and how better management of water resources generates real economic benefits. It will be of interest to all economists working in this area, whether academic or professional, as well as to water managers.'

                          - Nick Hanley, University of Glasgow, UK

The global expansion of irrigated lands during the 20th century and beyond continues to contribute to food production, but also degrades the environment significantly. The consequent search for policy remedies has stimulated a vital body of economic research.

The issues addressed in this comprehensive collection of previously published articles include the effects of existing government intervention on the environmental impacts of agriculture, the economic costs and benefits of environmental regulations for agriculture, and the economic and environmental merits of alternative mechanisms for water allocation and water quality protection.

In this volume the editors present a sampling of economic research on the interface of irrigated agriculture with the environment. The articles included are by leading researchers in this field and span the topics of nonpoint pollution control, salinity management, and the allocation of water.

                            Description:
The aim of the present work was to evaluate the accumulation of selected trace elements (boron, cadmium, chromium, mercury, lead and arsenic) in agricultural soils of the Zone 1 of the Irrigation District 03 (DR03) in the State of Hidalgo, Mexico. The soils of Zone 1 have, on average, been irrigated with raw wastewater for about 20 years (range 6-41 years). A clear positive correlation between the organic carbon contents in soils and the irrigation time was found. The total concentrations of the elements analysed were 0.51-1.89mgCdkg^-^1, 11.59-27.42mgCrkg^-^1, 3.99-47.08mgPbkg^-^1 and 9.2-123.8mgBkg^-^1. Samples of topsoils (0-30cm) were extracted using a modified Tessier method according to a six fraction scheme: easily soluble (F0), exchangeable (F1), bound to carbonates (F2), associated with oxides of iron and manganese (F3), bound to organic matter and sulphides (F4), and the residual fraction (F5). In general, the elements were distributed in the fractions F0, F4, and F5. The concentrations of total arsenic and mercury were below the detection limits (0.03 and 0.01mgkg^-^1, respectively) except for 0.77mgHgkg^-^1 in one soil. The concentrations of total Cr and Pb did not exceed the maximum permissible levels set by the regulations of the European Union whereas total Cd was on the verge. A linear increase between the total metal concentrations and the irrigation time was found. In this study several crops harvested from soils showed Cd and Pb contents higher than those recommended by the Dutch and German guidelines. It can be concluded that the soils may pose a potential risk to the trophic chain and effective restrictions for the cultivation of crops that are sensitive to or known to accumulate heavy metals (i.e. nopal, onions, garlic, lettuce, potatoes, beets, and turnips) should be considered.

There is growing public concern in Zimbabwe over the illegal cultivation of vegetables on soils amended with sewage sludge or irrigated with admixtures of sewage and sewage sludge. Excessive accumulation of heavy metals in agricultural soils may not only result in environmental contamination, but lead to elevated heavy metal uptake by crops, which may affect food quality and safety. The work reported here studied heavy metal concentrations in crops irrigated with sewage sludge and sewage/sewage sludge admixtures at Firle Municipal Farm in Harare. The crops analysed in this study are heavily contaminated with the four regulated elements: Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. This contamination is at its highest in two of the staple dietary crops maize and tsunga. Tsunga leaves contained 3.68mgkg^-^1 Cd, over 18 times the permissible level by the EU standards (0.2mgkg^-^1); Cu concentrations were 111mgkg^-^1, 5 times the EU Standard (20mgkg^-^1); concentrations of Pb were 6.77mgkg^-^1, over 22 times the permissible levels allowed by both EU standards and UK guidelines (0.3mgkg^-^1); Zn concentrations were 221mgkg^-^1, over 4 times the guideline value (50mgkg^-^1). The other plants (beans, maize, peppers and sugarcane) also contained concentrations of heavy metals above the permissible levels. Furthermore, the concentrations observed in this study were higher than those reported by other workers who have examined vegetation from other contaminated sites. This study highlights the potential risks involved in the cultivation and consumption of vegetables on plots irrigated with sewage sludge, a practice which may place at risk the health of the urban population who consume these vegetables.

                                Description:
Benefits and costs of an integrated management system coordinated at the community level to reduce rodent damage to lowland irrigated rice were measured in West Java, Indonesia, from 1999 to 2002. Four villages, each of 120ha (70-80 families per village), were involved in the study, two being allocated as treatments and two as controls following a randomised block design. The emphasis was on integrated rodent management with the overall aim of reducing the need for toxic chemicals in rice fields. Rodent damage to rice can be measured at several stages of crop growth. In West Java, monocultures of lowland irrigated rice, cumulative damage to rice during the dry season was 54% at the primordial stage, 32% at the booting stage, but only 16% at the ripening stage. If measured at the ripening stage, the measured value ought to be multiplied by approximately 6.5 to obtain cumulative damage to the rice crop or by 4.2 for an estimate of yield loss. Rice yield can be estimated by farmers directly or by quadrat samples, the former being on average 20% lower than the actual yield. Integrated rodent management increased rice yields more when rats were common, in both dry and wet season crops. For every 1% increase in tiller damage by rats, there was a decrease of 58kg/ha in rice yield. Wet season crops benefited more from a trap-barrier system (TBS) than dry season crops at the same rat abundance index. The benefit-to-cost ratio for all seasons and years averaged 25:1 but varied considerably from year to year between a low of -2:1 to a high of 63:1. The economic benefit of integrated rodent management was equal to or better than that achieved by conventional management based on synthetic rodenticides.

We evaluated the accumulation and distribution of major and trace elements in agricultural soils of District 03 (DR03) in the State of Hidalgo, Mexico, irrigated with raw wastewaters for an average of 20 years. Samples of topsoils (0-30 cm depth) were extracted using a modified Tessier method. Total concentrations of the species tested were in the ranges of 675-1176 mg K kg^-^1, 277.9-1001 mg Na kg^-^1, 6,708-81,854 mg Ca kg^-^1, 23,800-106,974 mg Mg kg^-^1, 9.2-123.8 mg B kg^-^1, 0.6-1.9 mg Cd kg^-^1, 11.6-27.4 mg Cr kg^-^1, 3.9-47.0 mg Pb kg^-^1. Concentrations of As and Hg were very low. Concentrations of total Cd, Cr and Pb were generally below the maximum permissible levels set by the regulations of the European Union except for cadmium, which was in the middle of the maximum European range allowed for two soils. Regarding lead, one soil (S5) could reach the maximum permissible level of the EU in 6 more years of continued irrigation. On the other hand, contents of Pb in the most mobile fractions (''e'' in this work) were significant (range: 3-28%). This distribution translated into concentrations of soluble plus exchangeable lead of approximately 2 mg Pb kg^-^1 in three of six soils, significantly higher than the Swiss tolerance limit of 1.0 mg Pb kg^-^1 for mobile fractions of lead in soils. Multivariate analysis of the data (Pearson correlation and principal component analysis) quantitatively confirmed that: (i) there is a strong covariance between boron contents and several variables representing the salinity of soils (electrolytic conductivity, a variety of alkaline and alkaline-earth total and fraction concentrations). It appears that there is a problem with high boron content in soils, although the salinity is high only for one of the soils (S3); (ii) a significant correlation among irrigation time, lead content (total, fraction easily exchangeable and bound to organic matter and sulfides) and organic carbon in soils was found; (iii) another association among irrigation time, total contents of cadmium, chromium and boron, and organic carbon was observed.

                                    Description:
Organic fertilizers may differ greatly in composition and as a result there may also be differences in nitrogen oxides emissions following their application to soils. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of mineral and organic N fertilizers on the nitrification and denitrification processes, and consequently on N"2O and NO emissions. Therefore, a field experiment was carried out on an irrigated sandy loam soil under Mediterranean conditions during the maize (Zea mays L.) growing season. Untreated pig slurry (UPS) both with and without the nitrification inhibitor dicyandiamide (UPS+DCD), digested thin pig slurry fraction (DTP), composted solid fraction of slurry mixed with urea (CPS+U) and composted municipal solid waste mixed with urea (MSW+U) were applied at a rate of 175kg available Nha^-^1. Their emissions were compared with those from urea (U) and a control treatment to which no nitrogen fertilization was administered (Control). Accumulated nitrous oxide losses during the crop season ranged from 6.0 to 9.3kg N"2O-Nha^-^1 for the Control and CPS+U, respectively, whereas nitric oxide losses ranged from 0.01 to 0.23kg NO-Nha^-^1, for the Control and U, respectively. The use of digested slurries mitigated N"2O emission by 25% in relation to untreated pig slurry, but NO emissions were similar for both treatments. Dicyandiamide reduced N"2O and NO emissions by 64 and 78% with respect to slurry without the inhibitor. An indirect effect of DCD on denitrification was also observed, with a reduction of 32% in denitrification with respect to the slurry without the inhibitor. In this case, the greatest reduction in denitrification losses occurred during the irrigation period. Composts mixed with urea reduced NO emissions by 56% (CPS+U) and 85% (MSW+U) in relation to the urea treatment, but its effect on N"2O depended on the type of compost involved: CPS+U increased N"2O emission by 27%, whereas MSW+U reduced it by 55% in relation to urea. Denitrification was the most important process responsible for N"2O emissions when organic fertilizers were applied to the soil, while nitrification was the most important for the inorganic fertilizer. The C:N ratio of fertilizers was a good predictor of their NO emissions, denitrification losses and N"2O/N"2 ratio. On the other hand, added soluble N was a good predictor for cumulative N"2O emissions during the period before irrigation. This work shows that an appropriate selection of organic fertilizers based on their composition could be used to mitigate emissions of the atmospheric pollutants NO and N"2O in comparison with urea.
