Book Description
For many years much attention has been focused on the changing roles of women and minorities. Here is one of the first accounts of the status and power of American white men in a diverse and democratic society--their contributions, their failures, their future in the 21st Century. This book takes a wealth of information, organizes, synthesizes and makes it understandable with practical answers to racism and oppression, economic opportunity and success, power and privelege in America.

Understanding Diversity Through the Anglo-Saxon Male.......2006-06-28
Dr. Ipsaro, a double P.h. D. in Psychology and Administration, identifies a new and innovative way to change the productivity of a diverse workforce - including the white male. In a detailed and logical way, Ipsaro illuminates the history and role of white men, women and minorities in society and the work place. Ipsaro argues that many old world behaviors of the white male are still present today in businesses and society- mainly that they are still resource providers, directors and protectors. In essence, this means that they are still the ruling class and behaving by the standards of yester year. According to Ipsaro, the world has changed and most white males have not evolved into the new world. In order for diversity to be actively engaged in business, argues Ipsaro, the white male must become involved and lead the change. For instance, Ipsaro uses the Motorola Company as an example of a company that has empowered women and minorities. As a result, the company has promoted a substantial amount (more than 50 %) of women and minorities into senior leadership and management positions. The innovative change in diversity has positively impacted the morale and production of the company. With inclusion, as evidenced by Motorola, companies will be better served in diversity initiatives, and ultimately more successful businesses. Ipsaro concludes with a call for white males to become the driving force for leveraging diversity programs and incentives in the workplace.
SOME OF THE KEY THEMES OF THE BOOK INCLUDE:
* Inclusion of the white male is essential for positively changing the diversity of the workforce: Ipsaro notes that many white males are in senior management, and although many of these executives have planned and implemented diversity programs, few have included themselves in these programs. Ipsaro notes that old world values are obsolete in the world today, and white males must share leadership with women and minorities. This, in his words, would "relieve some of the burden" white males feel about leading a workforce. According to Ipsaro, this would allow more time for white males to balance personal and professional life and lead to a more diverse and productive work force.
* A fusion between organizational, unit, and self integrity is essential in developing a diverse workforce: Ipsaro notes that "trust is what holds a family, a group, an organization, a country together." Although everyone is different, argues Ipsaro, it is essential to find common bonds that unite a group in the pursuit of a common goal. Ipsaro notes training, group discussions, and an environment that encourages open dialogue as vehicles to increase self, unit, and organizational awareness of diversity in the workplace. Things such as empowering employees, matching talents to tasks, sharing and promoting a blending of cultures are keys to successful fusion in the workplace. This takes time and hard work.
Dr. Ipsaro is an expert is his field with many years of research and advisement on an international and national level in both the private and public sector. His concept that white males fail to include themselves in diversity movements is very relevant in the workplace today. Although White Men, Women and Minorities was published in 1997, it is still a legitimate reading in 2006 - as it touches on the issue of white males as diversity change agents in the workplace
Book Description
Providing the theoretical and conceptual framework for this continually evolving field, Agroecology: The Ecology of Sustainable Food Systems, Second Edition explores environmental factors and complexities affecting agricultural crops and animals. Completely revised, updated, and reworked, the second edition contains new data, new readings, new issues and case studies, and new options. It includes two completely new chapters, one on the role of livestock animals in agroecosystems and one on the cultural and community aspects of sustainable food systems. The author clearly delineates the importance of using an ecosystem framework for determining if a particular agricultural practice, input, or management decision contributes or detracts from sustainability. He explains how the framework provides the ecological basis for the functioning of the chosen management strategy over the long-term. He also examines system level interactions, stressing the need for understanding the emergent qualities of populations, communities, and ecosystems and their roles in sustainable agriculture. Using examples of farming systems in a broad array of ecological conditions, the book demonstrates how to use an ecosystem approach to design and manage agroecosystems for sustainability.

EASY TO READ: and .......2007-05-21
so most text books are really dificult to fallow. NOT THIS ONE. it's easy to read the chapters, at about 10 pages of easy to to read print with a high degree of readability. This book is about CONCEPTS. it's just that simple not real indepth. i think the first comment should drop out of college because if he can't read this book, he just wont make it in the real world.
This book is taking concepts about our enviroment and using them in our agricultural production. however he spends alot of time talking about mexico, which has some huge enviromental hinderances. This book isn't indepth, not technical it's just an "idealistic" way of production.
The class i had the book in was about the ecology of agriculture with an emphasis on recognizing sustanible systems.
BEST BOOK ON AGROECOLOGY.......2000-09-04
I highly recommend the Book Agroecology by Steve Gliessman. It reflects indepth knowledge of agricultural issues of today food production systems. Those of us interested in challenging thoughts and ideas to achieve sustainability must look at the contributions of this book. Some chapters demand basic knowledge of Ecology while other chapters demand higher level of ecology and Biology. The book provides examples from different parts of the world (tropical and temperate zones) so that it should be very useful to agronomists, and agroecologists from countries other than the US. As an agroecologist I highly recommend this book. I find it very useful to teach Agroecology and Ecology, in both agricultural schools and Biology students.
Take No-Doz if you're going to read this book!.......2000-01-12
My gosh, I've never fallen asleep faster! I pity all of you students who are required to read this pathetic work of literature. While Mr. Gliessman definitely knows his agroecology, he has difficulties conveying his thoughts to the reader. Also, you may be in a bit of trouble if you don't have a Ph.D in this field as the book takes off with a very complex vocabulary and may as well be Morse code: you can figure out what he's trying to say with the help of numerous other reference books. One suggestion to those students needing to buy this book for a class: DROP OUT!

Book Description
Agroforestry in Sustainable Agricultural Systems examines the environmental and social conditions that affect the roles and performance of trees in field- and forest-based agricultural production systems. Various types of ecological settings for agroforestry are analyzed within temperate and tropical regions. The roles of soil, water, light, nutrient and pest management in mixed, annual, woody perennial and livestock systems are discussed. Important new case studies from around the world offer innovative strategies that have been used successfully in raising forests and tree products on a sustainable basis for commercial harvesting and for providing other environmental services in land conservation and watershed management.

The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
ASIN: 1897766890 |
Book Description
This work powerfully asserts the idea that rather than using pesticides, the key to helping crops resist attacks from pests is to improve their strength through natural processes. Many of industrial agriculture's fundamental principles for fighting disease, in particular the reliance on pesticides and fertilizers, are explained and convincingly challenged and a new set of guiding principles for an ecological agricultural system are presented as a genuine alternative to the widespread use of chemicals.

Clears up a lot of misunderstandings.......2007-07-15
Good book for understanding how agriculture really works. You can get the gist of it in a few overview pages or delve deeply.
Book Description
Everywhere you look people are more aware of what they eat and where their food comes from. In a cafeteria in Los Angeles, children make their lunchtime food choices at fresh-fruit and salad bars stocked with local foods. In a community garden in New York, low-income residents are producing organically grown fruits and vegetables for their own use and to sell at market. In Madison, Wisconsin, shoppers select their food from a bounty of choices at a vibrant farmers' market. Together at the Table is about people throughout the United States who are building successful alternatives to the contemporary agrifood system and their prospects for the future. At the heart of these efforts are the movements for sustainable agriculture and community food security. Both movements seek to reconstruct the agrifood systemthe food production chain, from the growing of crops to food production and distributionto become more ecologically sound, economically viable, and socially just. Allen describes the ways in which people working in these movements view the world and how they see their place in challenging and reshaping the agrifood system. She also shows how ideas and practices of sustainable agriculture and community food security have already woven their way into the dominant agrifood institutions. Allen explores the possibilities this process may hold for improving social and environmental justice in the American agrifood system. Together at the Table is an important reminder that much work still remains to be done. Now that the ideas and priorities of alternative food movements have taken hold, it is time for the nexteven more challengingstep. Alternative agrifood movements must acknowledge and address the deeper structural and cultural patterns that constrain the long-term resolution of social and environmental problems in the agrifood system.

Book Description
While traditions are very important to a culture, there is a need to challenge, as well as to respect, those traditions that have given rise to a particular rural research and development system. The authors examine the broad themes of "knowledge transfer" and the organization and conduct of research and development, based particularly on the system operating in the rangelands of Australia. The need to adopt a novel approach arose because the existing practice of agricultural extension did not meet the needs of the farming community there, and the funding bodies were dissatisfied with the return on their investment. The way in which the relationship between the rural community and researchers might be differently, and perhaps more fruitfully, managed are discussed. The issues addressed have relevance in a wider context and, as a result, this book will be of importance to any professional involved in agricultural management and policy making.

Book Description
Sustainability has become an important concern for environmentalists, agricultural researchers, farmers, politicians and ordinary voters. All agree on the importance of ensuring that agricultural systems of production can, in some sense, be sustained, i.e. be operated in such a way that quality of output can be maintained year after year, without degradation of the environment. There is less agreement, however, on how this concept of sustainability should be interpreted, or precisely defined, let alone measured. It was against this background of lack of precision in defining the sustainability concept that the Rockefeller Foundation commissioned an international research study on sustainability to exploit the wealth of potential information in established long-term experiments. Six major centres of long-term experiments were invited to conduct detailed studies of their data and to address the issue of definition and, in particular, to make proposals on how to measure sustainability in quantitative terms. The book is divided into three sections:
- Part I considers basic issues of definition and the choice of appropriate economic and statistical methodology
- Part II presents the results of the six research studies
- Part III draws together the conclusions, addresses the thorny issue of environmental externalities and makes proposals for future research and implementation.
The book has been structured as a comprehensive and unified contribution to this important issue and will be a valuable resource for researchers, professionals and policy makers interested in sustainability.

Book Description
Systems approaches for agricultural development are needed to determine rational strategies for the role of agriculture in national development. Mathematical models and computer simulation provide objective tools for applying science to determine and evaluate options for resource management at field, farm and regional scales. However, these tools would not be fully utilizable without incorporating social and economic dimensions into their application. The second international symposium,
Systems Approaches for Agricultural
Development, held in Los Baños, 6-8 December 1995, fostered this link between the bio-physical sciences and the social sciences in the choice of keynote papers and oral presentations, a selection of which is included in this book. The book's contents further reflect how systems approaches have definitely moved beyond the research mode into the application mode. The large number and high quality of interdisciplinary research projects reported from different parts of the globe, to determine land use options that will meet multiple goals and yet sustain natural resource bases, is a key indicator of this `coming of age'. At the farm level, where trade-off decisions between processes and products (commodities) feature strongly, much progress is also evident in the development of systems-based tools for decision making. This book will be of particular interest to all agricultural scientists and planners, as well as students interested in multidisciplinary and holistic approaches for agricultural development.
