        Book Description

In China, aggregate investment levels have been high and the cycles of investment growth rate have been remarkable. In order to reveal the mechanisms which drive investment hunger and cycles, this book develops an integrated growth-cycle framework which integrates the standard theory of socialist economies, the distributive barrier-constrained growth theory of developing economies, and the recent technical progresses in the western business cycle theory. It also analyzes the evolutionary dynamics of China's state investment system and the policy trade-off between industrial expansion and agricultural development.

          Book Description

Using practical examples and simple language, this book develops an accounting system that is a new and functional key to making product pricing decisions. This accounting system, which bridges the gap between full and direct costing, is called "Analytical Contribution Accounting." Georges and McGee demonstrate practically as well as theoretically why it is so superior for pricing purposes. The system is based on the relativity aspects implicit in the direct cost method, and on the calculations of a set of differentiated contributions.

              Book Description

A corporate guide to crisis management in volatile financial markets

Current financial crises in Argentina, Japan, and Turkey are being played out on the front pages of newspapers, and these are just the most recent financial crises that have rolled across the globe in the last decade and whose far-reaching impact hurts business around the world. Dangerous Markets: Managing in Financial Crises recognizes that no global corporation or financial institution can afford to ignore the potential of a financial storm and will help top management and financial professionals navigate through this often disastrous maze.

While many books discuss financial crises and their ramifications, none has presented an action plan for managing these storms—until now. Dangerous Markets: Managing in Financial Crises presents a method that allows executives and financial professionals to recognize the warning signs of a financial crisis and act appropriately before the situation spirals out of control. Based on years of research and practice in cleaning up the mess, McKinsey consultants Barton, Newell, and Wilson reveal the warning signs of potential financial catastrophes and provide unique principles that can be followed to shape and manage a strategy for survival.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Good Book to Understand Financial Crises.......2004-03-15

Contrary to conventional belief, the authors propose that roots of a financial crisis lie in microeconomic rather than macroeconomic factors. Their evidence is convincing.

This is a good book for anyone who wants to know why the past financial crises happened and how to cope with them from both the public and the private perspectives. The authors also present the "ten warning signs of a financial crisis" based on macroeconomic data that can be used as a guideline to predict a crisis in certain economy. But the problem is they cannot predict when it will happen.

The authors' objective to "offer some unique perspectives, case examples, and practical solutions, and an actionable, strategic blueprint that our clients can tailor to meet their specific needs" is well presented.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for crisis management.......2003-07-14

If you have no other book on financial crisis management, you must have this one.

The authors succinctly and clearly explain why economies in crisis do not behave the way economies normally do. They then identify key weaknesses in the financial sectors of crisis economies, and explain why they occur.

The book then goes on to provide a thorough and clear exposition on how crisis economies can be turned around, and what needs to be done, both politically and financially.

At this point the book turns to consider bank restructuring (a very specialised subject) and recovery of NPL portfolios in crisis economies. It concludes with recommendations for strengthening the international financial system to limit early economic collapse and prevent international financial contagion.

I really like this book, both as a guide for students, and a "how to" for CEO's and the financial sector. It is brilliantly clear and practical.

If you want to protect yourself and your organisation from financial crisis, or understand what happens when the economy you're operating in suffers collapse, get this book.

5 out of 5 stars A unique and intriguing book.......2003-01-03

If you are interested in financial crises in emerging markets, or have to manage a company during one, you will learn from this book.

Two features make the book unique in the financial-crisis literature. First is real-world experience. While the authors are up on their economic theory, the book's real contribution is the fruit of years of practice. From poring over the innards of banks' loan books to working out a national re-structuring plan, these guys have actually done it, and done it in multiple nations. Until now, the theoretical works of academia and the IMF/World Bank have had the field pretty much to themselves. This book is a refreshing break, and a vital complement.

Second is that the book speaks not just to policymakers, but to the private sector. There's plenty of advice out there for central bankers and finance ministers for crisis-management; there hasn't been anything for corporate executives and bankers. This book fills that void. If I were a CEO managing during a crisis, I'd want this book on my nighttable.

              5 out of 5 stars A must-read for managers and investors........2002-10-31

Very timely. In today's world, managers should be worrying about how to anticipate and avoid financial crises. An important read for both proactive managers and investors.

                Book Description

This book studies the causes and cures of inflation in a monetary union. It carefully discusses the effects of money growth and output growth on inflation. The focus is on producer inflation, currency depreciation and consumer inflation. For instance, what determines the rate of consumer inflation in Europe, and what in America? Moreover, what determines the rate of consumer inflation in Germany, and what in France? Further topics are real depreciation, nominal and real interest rates, the growth of nominal wages, the growth of producer real wages, and the growth of consumer real wages. Here productivity growth and labour growth play significant roles. Another important issue is target inflation and required money growth. A special feature of this book is the numerical estimation of shock and policy multipliers.

                  Book Description

This book includes the results of an International Workshop held at the Department of Political Economy of the University of Siena in December 1986. It focuses on the presentation, discussion, and comparison of two most interesting theories proposed for the explanation of long waves, namely the technological (neo-Schumpeterian) and the "social" approach. One of the main results that emerges is that the two approaches are not mutually exclusive and that an integrated theory of long waves is a feasible construction. The book consists of three parts. The first comprises theoretical approaches including also contributions shaped in the neo-Marxist and neoinstitutional perspectives. In the second part, applied analyses are gathered, ranging from case studies to econometric works on both underdeveloped and industrialized countries. Finally, contributions on economic history, methodological aspects and history of economic doctrines are also presented.

                        Book Description

For more than two thousand years, Ethiopias ox-plow agricultural system was the most efficient and innovative in Africa, but has been afflicted in the recent past by a series of crises: famine, declining productivity, and losses in biodiversity. James C. McCann analyzes the last two hundred years of agricultural history in Ethiopia to determine whether the ox-plow agricultural system has adapted to population growth, new crops, and the challenges of a modern political economy based in urban centers. This agricultural history is set in the context of the larger environmental and landscape history of Ethiopia, showing how farmers have integrated crops, tools, and labor with natural cycles of rainfall and soil fertility, as well as with the social vagaries of changing political systems. McCann traces characteristic features of Ethiopian farming, such as the single-tine scratch plow, which has retained a remarkably consistent design over two millennia, and a crop repertoire that is among the most genetically diverse in the world. People of the Plow provides detailed documentation of Ethiopian agricultural practices since the early nineteenth century by examining travel narratives, early agricultural surveys, photographs and engravings, modern farming systems research, and the testimony of farmers themselves, collected during McCann's five years of fieldwork. He then traces the ways those practices have evolved in the twentieth century in response to population growth, urban markets, and the presence of new technologies.

"Those interested in the history of one of the centers of crop origin and genetic diversity will find this book an invaluable reference."Brhane Gebrekidan, Virginia Tech

4 out of 5 stars People of the Plow.......2001-02-14

Historical evidence in cave paintings shows that the Ethiopian farmer has been using oxen and long-beam plows to till the land for at least two thousand years. Author James C. McCann uses his thorough research into archival evidence and current oral history to demonstrate the persistence of these farming methods to the present time. McCann's easy writing style takes farmers' narrative tales and translates them into social science language.

McCann clearly shows how Ethiopian farmers have been moved, in this century, from self-reliance to dependence upon political whims. Farmers now rely upon the state to provide seed and fertilizer, and so are forced into growing crops from those seeds, whether the environmental conditions cooperate or not.

McCann's writing style holds the reader's interest because he includes so many first person narratives and examples to illustrate his points. More detailed maps that show locations of old and new trade and market centers would be appreciated. McCann often talks about these changes, so maps could have acted to clarify the text if he had placed them near to the specific locations under discussion. His book is meticulously researched. This book is an excellent introduction to the general interaction of government and agriculture and its specific interplay in Ethiopia.

                            Book Description

The silent photographs Wolfgang Laib takes on his travels are perhaps best understood as an attempt to grasp at a fleeting and intangible essence, at the ephemeral, which, according to Laib, is eternal. Many of these images belie a fascination with non-European notions of spirituality, with religions that are embedded in everyday life, with temples and monuments that exert a force in the present. Laib's almost meditative pictures capture the aura of everyday vistas, and often preempt ideas later manifested in his sculptures and installations.
