Book Description
Book Description
Now can you become a more successful manager, a stronger team leader, and a motivator who gets the best results from a group? Ken Blanchard and Marc Muchnick's The Leadership Pill provides the answer. In the bestselling tradition of Whale Done! and The One Minute Manager, their entertaining and inspiring new book is a parable about the competition between two leaders with totally different management styles -- a story that reveals the ingredients of truly effective leadership.
Consider this tantalizing possibility: What if there were a pill that could actually stimulate the natural powers of the mind and body to provide leadership? In the story, an amazing new pill heightens one leader's powers, but contains the wrong ingredients, stimulating him in an obsessive and shortsighted direction with disastrous results. In contrast, the Effective Leader, working without a pill, proclaims that "only through sustainability can our teams remain motivated and successful." An inspiring and supportive leader, he supplies the right ingredients, earning his team's respect and trust with a blend of integrity, partnership, and affirmation. The hard-won result is a highly motivated team producing consistent top performance and genuine success. Ultimately it is recognized that "leadership for a lifetime" is much easier to digest than a pill for leaders looking for a quick fix.
Destined to be a transforming experience for countless readers, The Leadership Pill shows business managers at any level how to apply the right techniques for getting both results and the commitment of their people, even when the pressure to perform is high.
Customer Reviews:
A complex metaphor that makes an excellent point.......2007-08-09
While it is all a complex metaphor for many of the problems leading to incompetent business management, the leadership pill is an idea where the point is well understood and is an excellent one. The premise is that all of the qualities that make a good manager have been discovered and concentrated into a pill. Of course, the business world in general considers it the best of all possible quick fixes. However, one person, called "the effective leader", doubts the value of the pill.
The effective leader is so convinced of his position that he offers to take over as manager of a group that is currently dysfunctional and work there for a year with a pledge not to take the leadership pill. His performance and that of his company will be compared to the achievements of another company where the leader is using the leadership pill.
As first the achievements of the effective leader's company are dismal and the other company's are spectacular. When pressed, the effective leader refuses to change, staying consistent with his themes of integrity, partnership and affirmation. During the course of the year, the performance curves of the companies cross, with that of the effective leader eventually surpassing that of the other company by a wide margin.
It is often amazing to me how simple the strategy for effective management is yet how difficult it is to put in practice. Being honest and forthright in dealing with your employees and allowing them the credit for their accomplishments is a simple way to succeed as a manager. Yet it is such a rare thing. One can only hope that some of the people who have listened to this tape will act on it in their work place.
Typical Ken Blanchard.......2007-07-03
This is a leadership "story" (fable) told in a very Ken Blanchard style. I didn't find anything new in it. However, if you've never read Ken Blanchard, or if you are new to "leadership", I think it would serve as a very good introduction. If you have been into "leadership" for some time, and you are looking for a quick refresher of salient points, this should work.
Great tips to motivating others.......2006-10-30
The Leadership Pill is a easy and great read, and gives great tips to motivating people. It tells us that "Leadership Is Not Something You Do to People, It's Something You Do with Them."
Integrity
* Leading with integrity means being the person you want others to be.
* Trust is what happens when values and behaviors match up.
* People are more apt to trust and respect you when what you say and what you do are one and the same.
Partnership
* The key to effective leadership is the relationship you build with your team.
* Sharing the big picture puts everyone on the same page.
* It is easier to get up the hill when you climb it together.
Affirmation
* Praise is the easiest way to let people know they are appreciated.
* Each of us has the power to recognize the goodness in others.
* You will go a lot further if you stop to refuel.
Perfecting the blend
* People will think for themselves when you quit doing it for them.
* Leadership is the process of getting everyone to the place they are suppose to go.
* The highest achievement as a leader is winning the respect and trust of your team.
Great!.......2006-08-04
As I began this book I thought at first it might be a little "cheesy" but a little further into it I realized what a great book this was. It left me with some good ideas as a Manager. It was short and to the point but very motivating as well and definitely proved that positive leadership is what motivates people!
Commonsensical ..... BUT.......2005-11-13
Pros:
The Secret Blend: Integrity, Partnership, and Affirmation
Excellent read, The Leadership Pill does a great job of describing the Secret Blend in an easy to follow story format.
Cons:
The Leadership Pill is short and the authors spent approximately 20 percent of the book telling a story that need not be so long.
The build up to the challenge was described in an excessive and grandiose manner to say the least.
Oversimplified the qualities needed to be an effective leader
Littered with little catch phrases (again see page 110)
Overall, The Leadership Pill is a commonsensical book with oversize font that left be me wishing I had only borrowed it.

A Necessary Daily Tool for Supervisors.......2001-11-16
101 Recognition Secrets is a tool that I have used daily since purchasing. This book provides quick, easy-to-use ways to recognize your employees. The author is obviously knowledgeable about what works to build a successfuly team, using motivation and recognition as building blocks for success. My employees can't wait to put their best foot forward!
This is the only book I consistently recommend.......2001-01-21
Outstanding! I received this book several years ago when Roz spoke at a meeting of the Northern New Jersey Chapter of ASTD. It's about time someone listened to what employees want, and Roz has certainly done that. From "15 Ways to Get Rid of Your Staff" to "What Kinds of Recognition Would You Like to Receive," the book is a no-nonsense primer on recognition and rewards. Without exaggeration, I've recommended this book to easily a hundred or so colleagues, clients, and classmates over the past few years, and plan to distribute some copies as well.
Lots of white space, not many ideas..........2001-01-03
I purchased this book with about 6 others to investigate new ways to recognize employees. This book is only 106 small pages long, but even at that length, the author and publisher padded almost every page with big fonts, cheap clip art, and LOTS of white space. I could look past this if only the few remaining ideas were valuable, but the book is full of ideas like "Give your employee a $100,000 bar (a candy bar) to recognize them for a good idea" or "Make everyone a big mug of hot chocolate"...

Outstanding..easy to read..excellent desk reference guide.......1999-03-29
This is the type of recognition QUICK reference guide every manager should have on his/her desk. This book seems to hit on almost every occasion where recognition could be a form of reward. The book is small, easy to ready, down-home and applies to all employees, from executives to blue collar. In addition to the book, Ms. Jeffries does an outstanding job with the seminar for managers. Every organization should experience.

Horrifically Prejudiced Drivel.......2001-08-22
Although too disgusted to continue beyond a few chapters, I can honestly say this book is easily the most offensive drivel I've read in years.
The book's synopsis, which ascribes such sweeping generalizations as "an extended adolescence, feel disillusioned, are materialistic" to the young workforce, was in itself enough to rouse my anger. The crude chapter concerning twentysomething managers ("The Yellow Sneaker Syndrome") managed to turn my stomach, while the pages of mean-spirited and heavily prejudiced stereotypes motivated me to write an angry letter to the publisher.
Having worked in the technology industry, where under-30 employees comprise 40+ % of the workforce, I have seen first hand how untrue all the precepts of this book are. When in history has a demographic worked longer hours (60 - 70 + /week) or in worse circumstances (the increasingly unstable technology economy) with more globally impacting results (see Jamie Zawinski's contributions to Netscape)?
Although I'm sure the authors have some right to their "expert" status, no professional should lay claim to such ignorant and blatantly one-sided misrepresentation of an entire generation. Should all the "twentysomething" references be replaced with any of a variety of ethnic labels, outraged public reaction would be immeasurable; the ignorance that prompted similarly charged racial stereotypes 50 years ago should not be heralded as sage advice when expressed in reference to an age demographic.
I would suggest "disillusioned" and "materialistic" more accurately describes the producers of this book, feeding on the fear of middle-aged workers forced to compete with a younger age group in an economy that has rendered many old-school business practices obsolete.
Twenty-Something: Managing&Motivating Today's New Workforce.......2000-06-23
Lawrence J. Bradford and Claire Raines Twenty-Something: Managing & Motivating Today's New Work Force attempts to provide managers and supervisors in all types of organizations a practical guide to better understand and lead their young employees. This book examines the background and work orientation of today's new worker by examining the values of younger workers between the ages of 17 and 27. There are growing frustrations from managers and supervisors across the nation about the new workers' lack of work ethic and loyalty, dominated by self-interest, and their non-caring attitude. Bradford and Raines provide insight into this "so-called" disrespectful, cynical, but yet educated, innovative, and energetic group of young workers by helping managers and supervisors alike, better understand the values that drive their behavior. The book identifies eight core values of these "Generation X" employees: they are self-oriented, want "quantity" time, have an extended adolescence, feel disillusioned, are materialistic, want to have fun, are slow to commit, and don't bow to authority. Understanding these core values provides managers and supervisors more effective methods of motivating and leading these young workers. Throughout the book, the concept of effective leadership is intertwined with understanding. In order for managers and supervisors to lead effectively they must learn new leadership strategies in leading twentysomething workers. Bradford and Raines feel that the information about twentysomethings will help managers and supervisors better understand and lead these new workers successfully. This consists of outlining specific responsibilities, goals and performance standards, communication paths, advancement opportunities and rewarding their young workers. Managers and supervisors must not assume their workers have the same values and views of work as they do, or that they are driven by the same things that they are. Today's young workers are learning new management models in college that gives more power to front-line employees and flattens the organizational chart. In knowing this, managers and supervisors must get to know this new "breed" of young workers, their expectations, and provide them constant feedback and communication. Bradford and Raines have provided some useful information and background into this new type of worker. Their book is well written and provides good insight that helps the "old school" manager or supervisor lead, manage, and ease the impact of this generational conflict. Overall, the successful leader, manager, or supervisor of the twenty-first century will be a coach, mentor, a supporter, and a people person.

Customer Reviews:
Shame.......2003-11-02
It's a shame that these respected Agricultural Economists would allow such a poor example of a textbook to be published under their names. While there may be some meagre updates, the book is so watered down that it is probably more appropriate to a high school class than college. In addition, at 54 cents a page, its price far exceeds the price of most other quality books dealing with agriculture. A decent faculty member would never, in good conscience, require that students purchase this book.
"Policy Lite".......2003-08-11
The 4th edition of this text was a truly outstanding edition. It fit the needs of a wider vairety of courses ranging from the traditional Ag Policy course to courses focusing on the environment and rual development. Unfotunately, this is 5th edtion. If the reader wants a "CLiff-Notes" version then this is the text. It lacks the depth and breadth of a decent college textbook. The authors would have served the academic community much better by giving this watered down fifth edition a totally new title while leaving the 4th edition in print.
I have taught Agricultural Policy for a number of years. Count me out on adopting this edition.
