Way too religious!!!!!!.......2006-11-28

I bought Reflections from a Mother's Heart as well as A Father's Legacy. When I first received the books, I was very excited because they were beautiful on the outside. The questions at first seemed great, until I realized that 1/3 of the book was questions about God, church, Christmas and Christianity. Coming from a family of mixed religion, these books were completely inappropraite and from information provided on Amazon, I did not know this when I purchased it. Unless you are a hardcore Christian, I would not reccomend these books. I was beyond disappointed about these books. I am debating on keeping them and maybe changing some of the questions, but I will have to see.

I picked this book up over the summer at a yardsale for twenty cents. I started writing in it this week and I love it. The book asks a question on each page and it is up to the writer to answer. Lazy people may only write a direct answer to each question, but I have filled almost every page. The questions have a way of asking the things that will bring out antecdotes. I one day hope to give this book to my children and hope that they enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it.

I wish that my own father had a book like this. It would have been great to read about his childhood adventures. I am not planning on leaving the Earth anytime soon, so my children will never miss out.

This is a wonderful book for fathers and hopefully to be regifted, used, to the children. This would be wonderful for an expectant father to get at a baby shower. It does ask quite a few questions about religion, but I think it is important for your kids to know your views and history with that as well. Some people may object to the overtones though.

Overly Religious for my taste.......2005-12-28

The concept is fantastic... it is what I was looking for...
However, the continuous questions about my Christian thoughts and upbringing are not what I was looking for... while I am a practicing Christian, I find the constant probings of my beliefs and actions annoying.
The author should have made this book a more general thought provoking and informational journey of a Father's life that would be read by his child(ren) later on in life.
This book is of absolutely no use to any father who is not a Christian and might be considered insulting to someone of another faith that purchased it.
I will be returning this book. I think I will be better off starting a personal journal of my own in a good high quality blank journal.

Great book but..........2005-12-13

Overall it's an excellent book to capture details of ourselves to pass down to our children. I just wish the author had not woven religion into nearly every section of the book. Questions such as "When did you bcome a Christian?" and "Do you remember your first communion?" are not applicable to everyone.

While one could certainly just leave those pages blank, it would have been much better if the author had left a larger "notes" section at the end of the book or at the end of each chapter... or if the book was printed in a fashion that would enable us to remove pages that are not applicable.

Otherwise a very nice keepsake.

Priceless Keepsake.......2005-04-06

I gave this book to my father in 1992. He faithfully completed every single page. He became ill in late 2003, and we found it as we were sorting through some things during that time. This book has been such a treasure. Dad passed away on 3-4-04. We brought the book to the nursing home and as people came to visit before he passed away, we had something to read and reflect upon. It was certainly a conversation starter and we told some stories and laughed.

There are some really funny questions-like "When was your first date?" Some of the answers surprised us-like "What was your favorite sport?" My Dad played basketball all through highschool and for the KU Jayhawks. His favorite sport was basketball? No, it was actually baseball! We learned that from this book.

This book should be purchased for your Dad now. Encourage him to fill it out. I know I'll be sharing it in years to come with my children. Grandchildren my Dad will be able to watch over but never meet. It will give them a sense of who he was. Kind, gentle, caring. He was a physician, and on page after page he mentioned a wish for good health for everyone. It reinforced that he was able to do what he loved (healing) and given us comfort as we miss him so much.

I'm now trying to get my Mom to complete it too. It's great to have now, and will be a family treasure in years to come. If you can't tell, I love this book.

A great way to start.......2006-08-29

I found this journal to be a great place to start since at the top of each page it asks a question. Although it's broken up into each month, you don't have to follow the design of the book, Sometimes, I just randomly open it and see where it will take me. The only problem I have is sometimes there is not enough space to write although there are a couple of 'note' pages in the back and space for photos which make good writing space too. I found myself wishing my own mother had done something similar for me. My only close relatives are my siblings and I have so many questions about our parents lives that I will never know.

One Problem.......2006-03-24

The overall quality of this journal is great. The only problem with it is that the gold on the side of the pages flakes off very easily. It gets all over your hands and your clothes. However,the book is put together very well and the pages are thick and sturdy.

Priceless Tool to Have On Hand.......2007-08-31

This book has been an invaluable tool for me over the years. I bring it along whenever I carry my Bible and make notes from sermons or teachings as I feel led. It gives me a chance to record my impressions and review my notes later. Each one lasts me about three years and they wear very, very well. They've served to document my growth and are a written testimony to my life in chronological order. I've never found anything to compare to this book and would highly recommend it to anyone. Even someone who is generally not inclined to take notes will find this useful.

This is a great journal for taking notes. There is plenty of room to write on the front and back of each page. Also, every page has lines on them so you don't have to worry about writing all over the page. The references at the back of the book are great and I highly recommend this book for any note-taker!

I've been meaning to write for a while now to say how much I'm enjoying this book. I laughed out loud at the "Soup" piece. But, mostly, it's just nice to have the company of a truly sane person in this crazy world. I love all of his meditations and I wish I had written most of them!

What a surprise this book was for me. I rarely read essays, usually preferring books that offer more color and action. Although I live in California, Upper Turkeyfoot and Jeff O'Brien kept me totally involved with his life in the mountians of Pennsylvania. Something about his writting seems to keep you totally involved. I even identified with the mice that live in his typewriter. I highly recomend this book a an absoring read and look forward to more works by this author.

Reading this book is like taking a walk in the woods with a dear friend. I like this guy. O'Brien combines the wonders of the natural world, philosophy and an unusual wit to serve up a healthy dose of reality in a world gone mad. It's Thoreau meets Thurber. It's a vacation for the mind. Quality time. Soul food. If you can't find a quiet place where you live-- this book will open the door to one, even if you're perched on a fire escape two stories above Fifth Ave. Thanks so much.
