Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A practical primer.......2003-04-10

For those who are interested in the management of organizational knowledge and intangible assets, 'Valuing intangible assets'should prove to be highly practical. There are many knowledge management frameworks out there that assist business executive to manage their intangible assets (such as Sveiby's intangible asset monitor), the practical usage of these frameworks would be greatly enhanced by incorporating the valuation aspect of intangible assets. Reilly has provided a comprehensive illustration of both the 'scientific' & 'artistic' aspects of valuating intangible assets. 'Valuing Intangible Assets' is easy to read & loaded with useful examples, it is a rare one in the market.

5 out of 5 stars Recommend Purchase!.......2002-08-13

A larger portion of the value of a company nowadays comes from Intangibles (brands, patents, workforce & related contracts, durable customers etc.). This holds true in several industry sectors. Measurement of intangibles is a fascinating subject, but until this book was published, there was no single body of knowledge available to guide the general reader, or a Valuation professional. You had to work in one of the reputed valuation firms to be exposed to the techniques. This book is by far the best practitioner-oriented Intangibles Valuation book I have come across. It is very comprehensive in terms of the topics it covers, and does a wonderful job of covering almost all intangibles of interest. Each chapter is written by a relevant expert, and this invariably leads to variations in quality and some lack of consistency. However, for the most part, it is very well written, and definitely worth the price it sells for.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book.......2001-12-31

A great book for anyone or performs valuations of intangible assets or wants to learn how. I believe that this book will become to intangible valuation what Pratt's book is to business valuation.

5 out of 5 stars A complete manual of intangible valuation methods.......2000-08-28

The authors rely on their extensive professional experiences in this field to provide a comprehensive description of the three valuation methods for intangible assets--cost, market, and income methods. Easy to read, this book explains the nuances of each method in more detail than similar books available in the market. It reads more like an accessible textbook than a vague primer on the subject. It also contains many insightful and valuable case examples of how the methods are applied to different real life cases. As an MBA student, I have benefitted greatly from this book and will probably use it as a reference in the future.

I hope future editions will include option pricing valuation methods.

                      Book Description

This book examines one of the greatest challenges facing Japanese multinationals as they continue to expand foreign direct investment: how to integrate local managers into the management process of overseas subsidiaries, as well as in that of the parent companies themselves. In the majority of Japanese subsidiaries, management control has remained in the hands of Japanese managers at extremely high cost, but now Japanese firms are considering integrating local nationals into the management process of their companies, a process that may yield significant competitive advantage.

                        Book Description

The earth's fragile ecosystems support all life forms. The continued survival of these ecosystems will determine the survival of different species, including humans. The scope of Environmental Change and Challenge includes such topics as how marine and terrestrial ecosystems work; how predator-prey relationships form part of the intricate web linking all species; how the survival or extinction of one species affects the survival of others in a food chain; how humans have caused lasting environmental damage; and how we must now learn to manage the resources we depend on in much more effective ways that encompass adaptive management, conflict resolution, stakeholders and partnerships, and sustainable management. The book encourages readers to take a proactive approach by becoming better informed about the planet's life-support systems and by taking more responsibility as individuals for minimizing their impact on the environment. Boxes highlight suggestions for recycling and reducing waste and consumption, as well as interesting facts, such as how to identify animal tracks and how Native peoples have used traditional ecological knowledge to manage the resources they depend on. There are numerous photographs of wildlife, ecozones, wilderness areas, and the effects of human activities. Illustrations show, among other things, the composition of food chains and how various cycles function. Sidebars contain quotes from a number of sources. An appendix of conservation organizations--including ones involved in preserving endangered wildlife, oceans, and rainforests, as well as those that work to conserve energy, water, and lands--is a useful resource for the reader who wants to become more proactive in conservation. A glossary of selected terms rounds out this comprehensive perspective on humans' role in the future of the environment--and in our own future.

                          Book Description

This book presents a study of foreign labor policy of the four selected Asian territories: While it has been strongly believed that labor migration is closely associated with a rapid transformation of many industrialized nations of the globe, the phenomenon is now increasingly emerging in other parts of the world, notably in newly industrialized countries. It is therefore not surprising that prior up to 1950s, foreign laborers were merely found to be concentrated mostly in the West European and the United States. However, after the 1950s and 1960s, the transmigration of laborers started occurring in the Asia (notably Middle East) and after 1970s and 1980s in the Asia Pacific. Among the Asian countries, the importation of foreign laborers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore has been a necessity when these countries, at different stages of their economic developments, were facing a chronic shortage of laborers. In order to address the existing situation, a number of policy measures were undertaken, among others, open up some rooms for the entry of foreign laborers. This eventually led to a rapid increase in their number in different ways and phases. All these have resulted in an acrimonious debate on the issue of foreign laborers that attracted the attention of various groups of people, scholars, policy makers, administrators, businessmen and businesswomen as well as entrepreneurs. The inflow of foreign labor from one country to another has now become a global issue.

The objectives of The Uplands Program are (i) to create the scientific base for developing and testing sustainable production and land use systems with increased productivity in ecologically fragile and economically disadvantaged mountainous regions in Southeast Asia; (ii) to develop concepts for rural institutions that can contribute to a sustainable reduction of rural poverty and food insecurity, and (iii) to advance methods for analyzing complex ecosystems and their interactions with the socio-cultural, economic and institutional environment. The research activities integrate the priorities of stakeholders involved in the management of natural resources and in rural development processes. Participation, sustainability and interdisciplinarity are central components in The Uplands Program.

                                Book Description

Do you know what your doctor really thinks or how your doctor really feels about medicine and about you? The seeds lie in the critical first few years of a medical education, and Dr. Robert Marion, director of the Center for Congenital Disorders at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, draws from his own experiences as student, intern, and resident to provide some surprising -- and sobering -- answers.

In the course of twenty gripping, illuminating, and extraordinarily candid stories, Dr. Marion reveals the dehumanizing, slightly insane, and often brutal process of medical training. You will experience not only the intense pressure and chronic exhaustion of the doctor-to-be, but also the price the patient must often pay. While each story stands alone as an adventure in medicine, taken together they are a call to change. With profound eloquence and compassion, Dr. Marion explores ways in which to assure that humanity and idealism survive the grueling and destructive path to technical competency.

This book is really a great read. Marion tells it like it is and doesn't hold back. Easy to read. It is all about the ups and downs of becoming a doctor within the social and cultural society that we have become. This is a great book to read if you are interested in the medical field. Look for more books by Marion, he is a great writer.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest book for all pre-med.......2001-05-30

There are only a few books that I enjoyed as much as this book. Dr. Marion is an amazing writer. He manages to keep readers interested without being unrealistic. I recommand this book for anyone interested in becoming a doctor or even dating someone that is thinking of becoming one. The book explores the shortcoming of modern day medical training and the emotional stress that students go through in the process. A must read for pre-med students!

                                5 out of 5 stars Why can't I write like this?.......2001-05-28

I'm going to keep it plain and simple. This is one of the few excellent medical books that are avialable. I have read many and I highly recommend this one. I just wish I could forget everything I have read so that I could read it again for the first time. I couldn't put the book down. In case you are interested some other great books are "When the air hits your brain", and "first do no harm, reflections on becoming a neurosurgeon". Enjoy!

                                5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2001-01-25

I really enjoyed this book! Dr. Marion is very honest about his experiences. The stories are sometimes disturbing and sad, but sometimes happy and they are well written. This book is much better than White Coat by Dr. Rothman because it is much more honest. When I read this book, I felt like I was right there with Dr. Marion.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST read for anyone interested in medicine.......2000-03-22

This book was absolutely the best true to life book I have read about the medical journey. I could not put it down. Marion is honest about his medical experiences, and although it is dated it is one of the best books I have ever read. If you are interested in becoming a doctor, read this first!

                                  Book Description

The explosive growth of knowledge in the field of space exploration and, in particular the interdisciplinary character of the subject of collisions in the solar system, put the scientific interest of planetary and galactic astronomers, as well as specialists in geophysics, dynamics, and cosmochemistry in a common focus. Obvious highlights include the explosion in the rate of discoveries of Kuiper belt objects; better understanding of dynamics of main belt asteroids and the processes affecting their injection into the inner planets crossing orbits; growing understanding of the importance of comets and asteroids in the delivery of volatiles to the inner planets and even possibly in life origin on the Earth; great acceleration of NEO discovery and more reliable prediction of their future threat to the Earth. All these topics are thoroughly addressed and discussed by the top-level specialists in the field on the most comprehensive and unprecedented basis. Owing to its interdisciplinary character the book will undoubtedly meet an interest of specialists in the different fields of astronomy, planetary and Earth sciences.
