      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2000-10-30

I really enjoyed this book. It was wonderful reading about women who are no different then me being highly successful in the male dominated business world. Great reading

5 out of 5 stars The Eleven Commandments of Wildly Successful Women.......2000-03-22

This book is highly recommended. It asks questions that you need to be able to answer for youself in order for you to be successful. It also gives a great source of references at the back of the book for other female organizations to help support you in your path to succeed.

      5 out of 5 stars "Thou shalt...."ÿ.......2000-01-12

I agree with Lillian Vernon: This is a "must-read for women of all ages, with positive and original ideas, giving a refreshing and personal perspective." I also think it is a must-read for men...at least those in management positions who (perhaps motivated by self-interest, if by nothing else) want to develop "wildly successful" people of both genders. Most of us have been "stone-walled" at some point in our careers. Or perhaps we have on occasion felt that we have hit a "brick wall." Encountering a "glass ceiling" is far worse because we can see through the glass to what lies beyond...to what we are denied. I am reminded of Tantalus who, according to Greek mythology, offended the gods. His punishment was to remain in Hades for eternity, thirsty and hungry, placed up to his neck in water he could not drink beneath clusters of fruit he could not eat: So near and yet so far.

It is Pamela Boucher Gilberd's assertion that "Women's economic creativity is one of the best-kept secrets in business today....It's time to acknowledge the truth -- that working women have the tools to create wild success for themselves and others and that we use those tools every day." Written in 1996, The Eleven Commandments of Wildly Successful Women is based on 125 interviews with a wide-range of women who have achieved "wild success." Their collective experiences suggest eleven "commandments" which Gilberd introduces and then illustrates by cross-referencing the experiences and insights of those she interviewed. The final chapter is perhaps the most valuable. In it, she shares Angi Ma Wong's 15 "Golden Rules for a Successful Life" and then her own 10 "Ways to Keep the Cycle of Success Going Strong."

Since 1996 when this book was first published, many organizations have raised the so-called "glass ceiling" and I guess that's progress. ASAP, however, every "glass ceiling" must be permanently eliminated if there is to be equal opportunity to achieve "wild success." Intangible assets are much more valuable than are tangible assets. I refer specifically to the talent (albeit under-utilized) and the experience (albeit under-appreciated) of those within any organization. The remarkable women whom Gilberd interviewed are to be commended for what they accomplished, especially given the obstacles they had to overcome. They are also to be commended for sharing so generously what they have learned. In this instance, they are following the Eleventh Commandment: Give Back to Keep the Cycle of Success Going. Those who read this book will be well-prepared to overcome all manner of obstacles at work to achieve their own "wild success"...and to help others to do so also.

4 out of 5 stars An Uncommon Interdiciplinary Collection.......2000-03-28

The book is a useful collection of paper (some long, some short) on the definition and physics behind the "habitable zones" around stars. While perhaps not technical enough for all applications, it's nice to finally see many of these issues discussed in one volume, instead of spread throughout many different journals and texts. The climate of such planets is covered of course, but the addition of topics such as how stellar evolution influences the habitable zone (how long is the habitable zone habitable, for instance), the implications of high planetary obliquity, and atmospheric collapse of tidally locked planets round out the presentation. While somewhat lacking in math for such a text, perhaps the biggest negative I can see is that some of the material is not as up-to-date as I would like, but in a field like this that would be hard to do even if it was annually updated.

                  Book Description

The papers contained in this volume arise from the 34th Herstmonceux conference, held in Cambridge, U.K., which addressed in particular the behavior of matter surrounding stars in the later stages of evolution. Highlights include the latest observational results that show how various types of stellar ejecta differ in shape, and a unified view of the physical processes involved; as well as the latest results on the media around Supernovae 1987a and 1993j. Other topics include late stages of evolution of low and high mass stars; physics of stellar winds; morphology of nebulae around stars; binary stars and bipolar nebulae; collimated flows and condensations; novae and supernovae revealing previous ejecta; and supernovae occurring in dense media. This timely volume will serve both as an excellent introduction for graduate students and a reference for researchers who want to keep abreast of developments in the field.

                    Book Description

The phenomena observed in young stellar objects (YSO), circumstellar regions and extra-galactic nuclei show some similarity in their morphology, dynamical and physical processes, though they may differ in scale and energy. The European Workshop on Astronomical Molecules 2004 gave astronomers a unique opportunity to discuss the links among the observational results and to generate common interpretations of the phenomena in stars and galaxies, using the available diagnostic tools such as masers and dense molecular gas. Their theoretical understanding involves physics, numerical simulations and chemistry. Including a dozen introductory reviews, topics of papers in this book also cover: maser and dense gas diagnostics and related phenomena, evolution of circumstellar regions around protostars, evolution of circumnuclear regions of active galaxies, diagnostics of the circumnuclear gas in stars and galactic nuclei. This book summarizes our present knowledge in these topics, highlights major problems to be addressed, and finally proposes future work.

                        Book Description

The rapid progress in research on mass-losing pulsating stars has now taken us far from its early photographic light variation study to the world of massive photometry and interferometic observations. Still some fundamental problems such as the pulsational mode and the mass-loss mechanism remain a mystery. In this volume the modern theoretical works are confronted with the latest observations and the active discussions indicate the directions of future research. Among the subjects presented in this workshop are: recent results of massive photometry; pulsation and properties of mass-losing stars; optical and infrared observations of circumstellar matter; radio and mm observations of circumstellar matter; distribution of maser sources in the Galaxy; VERA and other future projects. Thorough and up-to-date information on mass-losing stars provides invaluable references for all researchers and students who are interested in the AGB evolution, pulsation models, circumstellar matter, precision astrometry, and the Galactic structure.

                        Book Description

Opacity is a quantity which determines the transport of radiation through matter, and is important in many problems in physics and astronomy. To calculate opacities one requires atomic data for a large number of processes involving the absorption and scattering of radiation. Stellar opacities are of particular interest in astrophysics because of their importance for theories of stellar structure and stellar pulsations. Taking advantage of advances in computational atomic and plasma physics and of the availability of powerful supercomputers, a collaborative effort - the international Opacity Project - has been made to compute accurate atomic data required for opacity calculations. The work includes computation of energy levels, oscillator strengths, photoionisation cross sections and parameters for pressure broadening of spectral lines. Several different methods of computation have been used to calculate the same data thereby providing a check on the validity of the data. The Opacity Project Team is made up of 30 experts drawn from 13 leading laboratories and observatories in atomic physics and astrophysics in the USA, Europe and South America. The Project has been running since 1986. ^IThe Opacity Project Volume 1 is the first of a two-volume reference work produced by the international Opacity Project. It is divided into two parts: * Reprints of 31 key research papers elaborating the theoretical physical basis and computational methods used to produce the data. These papers provide essential background for researchers to understand how the data are produced. * Tables of energy levels and oscillator strengths for atoms and ions of the elements He to Si. Volume 2 contains tables of energy levels and oscillator strengths for the elements P to Fe. The amount of data will be similar to that of Volume 1.
