4 out of 5 stars Review from experienced business owner.......2007-10-05

I am surprised at some of the negative reviews.

I have started over a dozen businesses over the past 26 years. This book is an excellent overview and help to business owners. If you're expecting one book to give you all the answers and then trash the book because it didn't, you're not dealing with reality.

If you're experienced in business this book will give you many helpful reminders to keep you on track.

If you're inexperienced in business this book is one of the best to give you an overview and starting point.

I haven't yet bought any of Brad's other books but I will be giving some of them a try soon.

1 out of 5 stars The Biggest Scam Ever!!.......2007-08-28

I purchased two of the series because its high ratings. Then when I went back and read the review again, I found an very interesting pattern. That is, all the reviewers who give 4's or 5's to the series are the same people. What is more, when you see their review history, you will find that they only have reviews for the series only. What a coincidence!

I am not implying the author or his company fake the rating. I am just pointing out the fact for yourself to decide. And I think amazon should definitively take action to investigate this kind of activities. I lose faith in amazon's rating system because of this incident.

      A disappointed book lover

4 out of 5 stars Business coaching - good advice with a sales pitch attached.......2007-07-03

The book was a very good read, and contained a great amount of helpful ideas and concepts to help small businesses grow. It is also very informative, in a generalized way, to someone looking to start a coaching business. The details are saved for the franchise pitch that is strongly hinted at throughout the book. I enjoy Mr. Sugars style of writing and ability to get across his point quickly, without a lot of extra fluff. The story format made the reading enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Business Success from Start to Finish.......2007-06-07

I really liked this book because the format used a case study of Joe and Nellie's business to walk through the process of transforming their business into a commercial, profitable enterprise that works without them.

I liked the way the process unfolded, using examples and teaching to help Joe and Nellie implement changes in their business. The important areas covered included the 6 Steps to Business Success, 5 Ways to Improve Profit, and the 6 Keys to a Winning Team. This enabled me to put theory into practice and see the results clearly illustrated at each step along the way.

The other benefit I got was seeing how a business coach works to educate, motivate, and inspire entrepreneurs to fill in the gaps in their knowledge and make the changes they know they need to make to improve their business and lives.

4 out of 5 stars The Business Coach (Instant Success) (Instant Success).......2007-05-16

I haven't finished reading total book, but so far it is a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars A REAL Guide to Real Estate Investment.......2007-06-11

This has to be the best overall guide to real estate investment I have read yet. Brad Sugars puts concepts into place that seem (and are) simple compared to many other books of this type. Through his explanation of Wealth Wheels, Brad makes sense out of many of the other books you might read on Real Estate Investment. Use this book to craft your investment strategy, and the techniques described by other writers will become much clearer. A must read for any current or potential investor!

4 out of 5 stars Good Starting Book.......2006-08-09

An easy read with several key tips for the novice investor and many tips and principles are in bold text for you if you if would like to recall at a later date. I would definitely recommend reading this book.

I gave 4 stars because I would have liked more explanation or analysis with financial discussions, especially since getting the financial analysis right is key. For instance, there are tax rules associated with property investing and it's not clear what some of these inherent rules are which were used in financial analysis. For instance on page 35, it calculated a $1,615 after tax cash flow. I guess one must assume that even though you don't pay any federal income taxes on your investment property you can actually get a refund back from the government. If this is true, it's a pretty important point and should be considered being clarified and highlighted.

In addition on page 35 it says "let's assume it grows at just 5 percent". Then the lower table used an analysis of 6%. I think this might be a typo, but if not this too is not clear to the reader why there is a difference between the figures.

Also, he mentions to buy income producing properties with an interest only loan. However, it's not clear if one should do this all the time. For instance when you know the rates are going up do you still keep it in an interest only loan? When do you pay it off or refinance to a fixed, if ever?

Also, the financial cost of real estate agent fees were not calculated, and I suspect may make a difference between a buy, hold, or sell decision. There might be a reason for this but again it's not clear.

Overall it's a great book for beginners such as myself, and I would recommend this book along with a follow-on book which can go into detail on the financial aspects of real estate investing.

4 out of 5 stars Sound Principles for a Beginer in Real Estate.......2006-06-26

The Real Estate Coach: A Story of Real Estate Investing Success, by Bradley J. Sugars

"Remember this fact: How happy would you be if your grandmother had bought 10 properties 80 years ago in downtown Los Angeles, London, Sydney or Tokyo?"

"Investing is about your future- your family's future- it's not about tomorrow. Making money tomorrow is what your job or business is for; investing is about 3, 5 or even 10 years from now."

"Keep this one principle in mind: you don't have to be rich to invest, but you have to invest to be rich."

This book will give someone who is thinking about investing in real estate the push they need. It's a cute - quick story about a middle aged couple who are seemingly well off, yet want to build assets and net worth for their future and happen to be introduced to a real estate "coach" or mentor who explains the benefits and strategies involved with investing in real estate.

A particularly interesting concept was the "Property Wealth Wheel" which is simply a way of looking at or bunching different types of properties together so the quick profit from a flip will fund further property purchases and the cash flow from some properties will help cover others that don't have cash flow but are expected to appreciate at a faster rate.

By Kevin Kingston, Author of, A 20,000% Gain in Real Estate: A True Story...

      5 out of 5 stars A must read book.......2006-06-21

Reading the Real Estate Coach is a MUST if you are thinking of investing in Real Estate.

It is so easy to read and contains very useful strategies to help you make smart investments.

      I definitely recommend this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Essential reading.......2006-06-19

Why didn't I read this book before I purchased my first property...I would have saved thousands.

Brad's simple to understand yet powerful property negotiation and development techniques are benefitial to both the novice and professional developer.

You will learn powerful techniques to buy the right properties at the best possible prices in any market.

      5 out of 5 stars CORNUCOPIA.......2001-05-03

Over three hundred pages of USA coaches clinics transcripts with plenty of diagrams. 39 USA coaches give insights on various topics. Concludes with Legends interviews which include discussions with Bill Walton, Ray Meyer, Guy Lewis, Ed MacCauley, George Ireland, Pete Newell and Jack Hartman.

You can tell that these clinic sessions cover a considerable period of time, from recently to several years ago. References to or discussions of teams and players indicate some of the sessions were fairly recent and some go back several years. There is still a lot of value in the older stuff, though.

Over 30 pages by John Wooden include his pyramid of success, quite a bit of theory, philosophy, and instruction, and 2 detailed (minute by minute) practice schedules including one from January 14, 1975.

Plenty of information by various coaches on

      A) various offenses (including Ron Felling on Indiana motion offense, Roy Williams on Kansas offense, Pete Gillen of Zavier on attacking the match up zone, Coach K on the Duke Offense & others on zone attack and man attack, etc.),

      B) defenses (including Matchup Zone, and zone, man, pressure, zone press, are among the defensive schemes discussed by various coaches),

      C) and transition (plenty on pressure, pressing, fast break and transition),

      D) and special situations (such as out of bounds plays) are covered.

There are also articles (clinics) on such topics as sports psychology (& bench coaching), motivating, organizing practices, shooting techniques and drills, rebounding, developing post players (including one on this topic by Rick Majerus).

There is enough material here for a coach's manual (lots of play and drill diagrams) and also plenty to help the individual player. However, the book is primarily organized according to Coaches and then topics. Some coaches cover 3 or 4 topics (Wooden more than that).

The schemes and philosophies are not always compatible with each other. You'll find different ideas about when to shoot the 3, try to penetrate, double team, pull a player out of the game, etc.

Yes, there are a few womens' teams coaches, including Muffet McGraw on Fast Break.

I expect this won't be the last book in this series that I will purchase.

Only a fraction of the quotations in this entertaining compendium are humorous, but quite a lot of them are witty, and most are wise. You can dip into it anywhere, and never fail to be diverted for however long you want, from seconds to hours.

"A drug is a substance which when injected into a guinea pig produces a scientific paper."

This book is meant not only for amusement but for scholarly reference. Anyone wanting to include a relevant quotation (famous or not) in their own writings can use this volume to find the best quotation. The Gaithers provide an index of subjects, by author. They also provide a separate index of authors, by subject. Whichever you have, and whichever you want, this book helps you get the right thing, and get it right. The compilers have scrupulously traced quotations to their sources, listed in an exhaustive 26-page bibliography. Readers finding gems from a source they never heard of can easily track down the whole book. Equally, it can remind you of an old favorite that's worth looking up again.

Max Planck: "An Experiment is a question which science poses to Nature, and a measurement is the recording of Nature's answer."

The cartoons by Andrew Slocombe fill out pages in good humor.

Dr. Leonard McCoy: "I'm a doctor, not an escalator."
                    "I'm a doctor, not a brick layer."
                    "I'm a doctor, not a mechanic."
                    "I'm a doctor, not a coal miner."
"I'm a doctor, not an engineer."

This book has extremely few proofing errors. The repetition of quotes from page 249 on page 250 are the worst - and trivial. Typography, printing, and binding, are all excellent, as expected from Institute of Physics Publishing. Other quotation books in the Gaithers' series from the same publisher, in similar bindings, cover most sciences and engineering.

John Allen Paulos: "Consider a precise number that is well known to generations of parents and doctors: the normal human body temperature of 98.6° Fahrenheit. Recent investigations involving millions of measurements reveal that this number is wrong; normal human body temperature is actually 98.2° Fahrenheit. The fault, however, lies not with Dr. Wunderlich's original measurements - they were averaged and sensibly rounded to the nearest degree: 37° Celsius. When this temperature was converted to Fahrenheit, however, the rounding was forgotten and 98.6° was taken to be accurate to the nearest tenth of a degree. Had the original interval between 36.5° and 37.5° Celsius been translated, the equivalent Fahrenheit temperatures would have ranged from 97.7° to 99.5°. Apparently, discalculia can even cause fevers."

Even in such a fine resource, I can quibble with a few choices. I wish the dates were included, where known. A lot of medicine has changed from dangerous, a few hundred years ago, to comparatively safe. Quotations of wisdom vary by the realities of the times, and those times are not noted.

A few items are parody songs, to sing to a well-known tune. But that isn't noted till the end of each item, by which time the reader has already read it unmusically. When an item should be sung to a certain tune, tell the reader before starting the lyrics.

"Cold: A curious ailment that only people who are not doctors know how to cure."

The decision to start each section on a new page means that the many sections with one or a few entries leave lots of white space.

This book belongs in many of the same places that The Journal of Irreproducible Results belongs: in all medical libraries and staff lounges, and with professionals who could use a diversion. It would make a good gift, and a good award.

Will Rogers: "We were primitive people when I was a kid. There were only a mighty few known diseases. Gunshot wounds, broken legs, toothache, fits, and anything that hurt you from the lower end of your neck down was known as a bellyache."

                    Book Description

Rupert Sheldrake, one of the world's preeminent biologists, has revolutionized scientific thinking with his vision of a living, developing universe--one with its own inherent memory. In The Rebirth of Nature, Sheldrake urges us to move beyond the centuries-old mechanistic view of nature, explaining why we can no longer regard the world as inanimate and purposeless. Sheldrake shows how recent developments in science itself have brought us to the threshold of a new synthesis in which traditional wisdom, intuitive experience, and scientific insight can be mutually enriching.

5 out of 5 stars an interesting book for anyone interested in nature, not only for biologists.......2006-11-02

It may appear that the division into serious scientists and con-men of the scientific world is something obvious and undeniable. Nevertheless, there are people who are real scientits, but they profess controversial, or even revolutionary, theories, called by some a scientific heresy. One of the representatives of this group is Rupert Sheldrake, a British biologist, educated in Cambridge and Harvard, publishing in Nature and other renowned journals specializing in natural sciences. The basis for most of his theories can be found in "The Rebirth of Nature. The Greening of Science and God".

In "The Rebirth of Nature" Sheldrake describes the animistic theory of nature in contrast to the mechanistic one, starting with a solid, historical introduction. The original, old beliefs, based on the power of Nature and the Mother Goddess and, in consequence, on matriarchy, gave way initially to the aggressive male gods, resulting in the end of simple haromony, and beginning of wars and hostile human attitude towards the surrounding world (Sheldrake is very interested in feminism, and vice versa, proving, that all theories and philosophies, even at the surface very diverse, somehow, somewhere have a point in common).

The next, and, according to the author, much more important breakthrough was the end of search for scientific proofs of existence of the soul, ether and any divine, or experimentally undescribable, elements, warranting the existence of life. The faith in the divine was then substituted by the mechanistic theory - which says that we, humans, together with all beings, are governed solely by the laws of physics and these laws explain absolutely all functions of ou organisms as well as personal and social behavior.

This breakthrough was initiated in the Renaissance by simple experiments, such as lack of weight difference between alive and dead animals proving, according to the scientists of that era, that after death the mechanism simply stops working. According to Sheldrake, the common sense says that this very experiment can be interpreted in the way disadvantageous for the mechanistic theory, because if nothing material decides if the organism is alive or dead, the life cannot be explained by the part of the physical mechanism... (besides, what about the "21 grams"?)

Paradoxically, the breakthrough was reinforced by Reformation and the Protestants' sober attitude to life, and stabilized in the Enlightment period. The theory of evolution beutifully confirmed the mechanistic theory, at least in the initial stage.

In spite of all, many contemporary theoretical biologists lean towards the holistic concept of natural philosophy, linking physical laws of nature with the belief in the forces and connections among all the animated and non-animated components of the Planet Earth.

The important part of the holistic theory are fields. The discovery of fields, such as gravity, magnetism or electricity, in physics, shaked the mechanistic theory to a certain degree, because gave the examples of "immaterial" energy interactions (the author somehow omits the physical particle element of these interactions, but never mind). Sheldrake postulates, by analogy, the existence of the morphogenetic fields, responsible for the formation and evolution of life. He also gives interesting examples of phenomena, which are not yet explained or completely deciphered by sciene.

One such phenomenon is memory - indeed, although lesions in particular parts of the brain cause various types of memory loss, it is not known, where and how the memories are stored and segregated. Sheldrake compares the brain to a TV set: it is equally vain to search in the neurons for the traces of past events, as to look in the circuits for the traces of the TV shows. The destructions of a component will cause problems with the reception of a given channel, but does not prove that the trace of this channel, its memory was in the damaged component (this is such an oversimplification... and I am even not sure if it is accurate, but definitely it is a good image).

Sheldrake supports the contemporary, holistic natural philosophy with the Gaia hypothesis, conceived by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis. The Gaia hypothesis, or the hypothesis of Earth as an organism (according to Lovelock; Margulis tones down his expressions quite a bit, saying thet our planet cannot really be called "a living organism" without complete re-definition of the term "life") - at least as a self-regulating biosphere and biotope, explains, how the Earth could have maintained relatively constant environmental conditions for a long time (for example, the constant salt concentration in seawater is explained with the mechanism of lagoon formation) and warns against (caused, of course, by mechanistic way of thinking) influence of our species on the environment. One of the main points of the Gaia hypothesis is treating Homo sapiens as one if the nods in the network of interactions, together with other species of living organisms and also with the unanimated components of our environment, not, like we are used to, as a higher intelligence created to rule over the world. (the problem with using the Gaia hypothesis to prove anything is that it is a HYPOTHESIS).

Sheldrake develops his theory, discussing many scientific unknowns, getting through the weak points of the theory of evolution and medical mysteries to the thoughts about the Big Band abd the beginnings of the Universe. He concludes with a statement that the old, mechanistic theory still exists, but in a conspiratory form, the proof of which seems to be Richard Dawkins and his book "The Selfish Gene". I am rather on the side of Dawkins as long as the scientific beliefs go, but Sheldrakes arguments (despite the fact that the theory of selfish genes creating our bodies and influencing emotions is not, as Sheldrake would want, a simple depiction of living creatures as robots manipulated by DNA, like by a computer program - even Dawkins formulates it differently now and clearly the title of his book was mostly a commercial trick) make a lot of logical sense and it is difficult to argue with them - they require a lot of solid knowledge (many tried).

"The Rebirth of Nature" is a good (albeit biased) introduction to contemporary theoretical biology and a proof of importance of this branch of biology, so neglected in the age of molecular biology and biochemistry.
The other advantage of this book is a good bibliography, full of references to original publications. It is not necessary to agree with the author and it is possible to close an eye to many obvious simplifications, but it is interesting to learn, what is the way of thinking of one of very active scientists, who is not present in a school curriculum and also get some distance and critical attitude towards the knowledge, nowadays commonly agreed to be right.

5 out of 5 stars A Cogent and Revealing Look at How We Think.......2004-09-01

Rupert presents a balanced and logical presentation of how scientific thought began, describing
its progress from the dawn of civilisations through the Renaissance, to modern-day empirical
platitudes. He shows that both sides are manifestly wrong in their attempts at explaining what
is truly observed in terms of behaviour and function. He concurrently presents an alternative
argument based on morphic fields and the fact that everything any living thing does is
recorded into these fields forever, to be called on whenever a resonance with a living member
of that species occurs with these fields. For example, DNA does not explain why, amid the same
protein building blocks, and DNA pattern in each cell, an embryo's arm grows differently to
its leg. Morphic fields, however, remember how the blocks go together and exert an influence to
                    survival-successful ends.

I cannot recommend this book enough. It is superb and really eye-opening. For example, the
parallelism between marsupial and placental mammals, shows how the same design, but with slight
variations, can come about through universal morphic fields. It also leaves room for
speculation as to how the morphic fields caused by this planet, match those on other life-
supporting planets in the universe, and hence, how similar aliens might be to us. A really
wonderful read, and one of my top books ever.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring and challenging.......2004-05-26

I am in a constant search for new and challenging ideas and this is one of the books that offers something truly new. The author tries to reconcile historic and scientific findings from various advanced fields with spiritual ideas for which never will be a scientific proof. The variety of presented angles makes the reading difficult at times. Ideas presented in the book may never be scientifically proofed but intuitively they just make sense.

The idea of morphic fields introduced by the author is extremely powerful. It is very interesting to think how the ultimate force in the Universe often called God can affect our lives and life of our planet through the non-local morphic fields that govern Life we know. It made the concept of God much more acceptable to logic.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting ideas!.......2003-12-04

In this book Sheldrake proposes that nature and its evolution has purpose and meaning beyond mere random mutations, natural selection, and survival. He contemplates on a deep sense of consciousness beyond what we are familiar with in traditional science, a type of consciousness that exists in all matter. I believe the author is onto something very interesting and worth exploring in the future. Toru Sato in his revolutionary book, "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" discusses this possibility from a very different perspective as well. This is perhaps the future direction of science. These books are well worth a read if you are interested in cutting edge theories on consciousness.

2 out of 5 stars Mystical new theories on the Earth, Science and Nature.......2003-02-06

In his book, The Rebirth of Nature: The Greening of Science and God, Rupert Sheldrake proposes some ideas about nature, the planet earth and the universe which at first look, sound interesting, but upon closer examination may seem somewhat far fetched. Many of his ideas are rooted in spiritual concepts, yet he also discusses science, its characteristics and its history. Sheldrake attempts to link scientific concepts to his ideas, while at the same time showing disdain for the scientific way of thinking, which he terms "close minded." His ideas of "morphic fields" and "formative causation" are presented without convincing evidence. At best he offers anecdotes to support his claims, which include: the idea that animals can communicate telepathically across time and space, and that crystals influence each other through "morphic resonance." Reasonable people who have some knowledge of science will likely see there are less magical explanations for the phenomenon he discusses. At the same time Sheldrake scolds the reader as "mystery intolerant" if unwilling to accept the author's assertions. Sheldrake has purposely tried to blend science, which works through well thought out experiments to lead to the development of theories, and mysticism, which allows for leaps of faith to reach beliefs. Some may find this combination refreshing, while others might view the juxtaposition of these two methods of understanding, as intrinsically incompatible. Sheldrake's end goal seems to be to convince the reader of the great value of planet earth, and the importance of living in harmony with our environment. Indeed, this concept is crucial to the future of humanity and all life. Yet many will not need Sheldrake's extraordinary theories to lead to the recognition of this great truth.
