        4 out of 5 stars Still Pertinent?.......2004-04-24

As it was written near 2000, a chapter or two suffer from obsolescence already, but the excellence of the rest of the content make it very forgivable.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for IT Managers!.......2002-01-20

As the MIS Director for a large educational institution, I have felt the impacts, first-hand, of recruiting and retaining top IT professionals in a tight job market. Yet there is clearly a methodical approach that can be followed to target the "right" employees and, once hired, ensure that they remain happy and content within your organization.

This book does an excellent job of outlining that process in a simple, easy-to-follow, step-by-step approach. The author not only covers all aspects of the hiring process but also reminds us of best practices that we too often (and too easily) forget to ensure success once we bring top players on board.

This book was pertinent and informative. I intend to pass it around to all of the managers on my staff.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for High Tech Executives and HR.......2002-01-19

Adamsky has produced a superb guide to the Hiring Process that is of great interest to Executives, Recruiters and Job seekers alike. The book is applicable to a wide range of industries well beyond the IT industry.

The book provides a great deal of actionable ideas that you can put into place now to improve your hiring practices, land the best candidates, and keep them as satisfied productive employees. Similarly, the book helps potential applicants better understand the hiring process and get inside the mind of hiring managers. It also contains a plethora of valuable and interesting ideas and commentary on the HR landscape. Truly an enjoyable and informative read !

        5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise!.......2001-12-18

I didn't actually buy this book but won it as a door prize at an industry trade show. I tossed it in my briefcase and didn't give it much thought to it until I was stuck in an airport on my return trip home. Although I don't hire a great number of "information technologists", the book was filled with excellent advice for any manager. His advice applies to the dynamics of locating, interviewing, hiring and retaining exceptional individuals. I like to underline when I read, and when I finished the book I realized I had underlined just about everything! Don't let the title throw you off because this is an excellent resource that truly cuts across all industries. He has his hand on the pulse of human nature, and an incredible insight into those people who understand how (technically) the world works.

I have already given a copy to a friend that owns a small company and has found it a challenge to find and retain good people. If my friend follows the program outlined in the book I am sure he will see the results. One thing I really liked about Adamsky's writing style is that it's light on philosophy and academic drivel and packed solid with the experiences of someone who has obviously been in the trenches.

5 out of 5 stars A boon to job seekers and providers alike.......2001-12-04

I feel better prepared to operate in today's challenging job market after reading this book.

As an IT professional I have had occasion to be on both sides of the interview desk. This book clarified and reinforced many of the beliefs that I formed from these experiences. However, I derived an even greater benefit from those sections that challenged my preconceptions. Mr. Adamsky's use of logic, examples, and self-deprecating humor helped me to see things from a different viewpoint. I am confident that a company can only benefit from the encorporation of his strategies.

Dubinsky and Skinner have uncovered 13 drivers of discretionary effort, or why employees go above and beyond what is expected of them in the job. If you are aware of these drivers, and if you use their prescription to recruit, manage and retain employees with these attributes, you can realize a company of High Performers.

        3 out of 5 stars A Soild Effort!.......2004-10-25

This is a very short book and most of what authors Alan J. Dubinsky and Steven J. Skinner have to say seems like straight, plain common sense. That is so rare in books about human resource management that this seems like a small gem. Most of its content consists of vignettes of high-performing employees who go out of their way to serve customers. But the authors have arranged their material well as they discuss boosting employees who do good work in lower-level management or staff positions. Each chapter covers a trait that motivates top performers and includes succinct tips for managers. The authors also outline, on a matrix, the relationship between performance motivation and managerial initiatives. While you can easily read this book in less than an hour, putting its recommendations into effect will be the work of an organizational lifetime. We believe it will be work well rewarded.

          Book Description

Are You Chasing a Purple Squirrel? (purple squirrel n: an ideal job candidate who, in reality, does not exist) Too often, managers waste time chasing a purple squirrel. A sales candidate may be skilled at selling, but can he or she relate to your industry sales cycle, costing systems, delivery schedules, and manufacturing processes? Recruiting talent is the number one issue facing companies today. How do you attract and retain elite talent in today's tight labor market? How do you evaluate motivation and ability to sell competitively in your industry? These are just some of the questions Russell Riendeau addresses in Finders Keepers. Other questions addressed include: Is your organization attractive to the best sales and management personnel? Is there a magic commission formula that will keep talent on your team? What can you do about expensive turnover in your sales force? Why is it important to brag about sales reps who have left your organization? Why should you find your replacement?

                          Book Description

Opinions on the large-scale structure of the early universe range widely from primeval chaos to a well-ordered mass distribution. P.J.E. Peebles argues that the evolution proceeded from a nearly uniform initial state to a progressively more irregular and clumpy universe. The discussion centers on the largest known structures--the clusters of galaxies, the empirical evidence of the nature of the clustering, and the theories of how the clustering evolves in an expanding universe.

                          Book Description

Enormous progress has been made in inflationary cosmology in the past few years and this book is the first to provide a modern and unified overview of the subject. Coverage examines every aspect of inflationary cosmology and carefully compares predictions with the latest observations, including those of the cosmic microwave background, the clustering and velocities of galaxies and the epoch of structure formation. Problems are included throughout to help the student develop a thorough understanding. An ideal introduction to what promises to be one of the most fruitful topics of research in science in the next decade, this volume will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers in astrophysics, cosmology, particle physics, theoretical physics and applied mathematics.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Textbook.......2006-04-18

This book by Andrew Liddle and David Lyth is on a far more advanced technical level than the other book by A.Liddle I reviewed earlier for Amazon(An Introduction to Modern Cosmology). So when the reviewer calling himself "a reader" declares that "the level of mathematics is pretty much nil, anyone with basic algebra could cope", Dr Liddle must have chuckled, and so did I ! I wonder if this reader has really read the book, because no one, not even a Fields Medalist, would consider topics such as the Laplace equation,spin-weighted spherical harmonics, Bessel functions, the gamma fuction, the Riemann tensor and the Bianchi identities etc.. as falling in the category of "basic algebra".Dr Liddle himself, in the Bibliography to "An Introduction to Modern Cosmology", considers this book to be in the "postgraduate" category, so, prospective reader, beware!
Now to come to the book itself: this is an excellent textbook, and the authors lead the reader from one level of understanding to a higher one in the clearest way possible . No wonder, since the authors have been instrumental in developing inflationary cosmology, in particular the concept of "slow-roll inflation".Sure, there are some conceptual errors, which are listed and corrected in a comprehnsive "errata" list on the book's webpage. This list is regularly updated, and I know from experience that Dr Liddle is happy to receive any remark about a genuine error that a reader has spotted.Unfortunately this book's webpage does not contain (contrary to what the same "reader" suggests) any information on new developments in the field. But it is noteworthy that most predictions in the book,(e.g angular power spectrum for temperature and polarization anisotropies)have been verified by the one-year and , recently, three-year WMAP data.We can say with pretty much confidence now that LCDM is a viable cosmological model that requires only one thing to become definitive: a physical explanation of dark matter and dark energy.
However, I have one misgiving about the book: it does not contain a full treatment of acoustic oscillations and their relation to acoustic peaks from first principles, and these concepts are essential for the understanding of the physics that lies behind the angular power spectrum of CMB anisotropies. To be more precise, the treatment of Acoustic peaks given in paragraph 5.2.7 is purely qualitative, whereas it could have been analytically related to that of Acoustic oscillations given in paragraph 4.5.4 .It would have been good to show how the theoretical curves of Figure 5.10 are generated from the solutions of equation (4.133), instead of referring the reader to " the publically available CMBFAST code of Seljak and Zaldarriaga". I am pretty sure that Drs Liddle and Lyth will consider introducing a section on this issue in the next revised edition of this masterly book.

This is a nice book that introduces all of the basic material for inflation. I found that most of it can be found elsewhere (eg. in Peacock's book), and it isn't necessarily any more comprehensive in Liddle & Lyth, because the pace of exposition is slow. However, it's worth buying for the insights the authors give, for the careful treatment of cosmological perturbation theory and gauge choice, and because it is approached from an explicitly supersymmetric direction. (There is no technical information about supersymmetry, however, and if you are after a book on supersymmetric cosmology, then you will have to look elsewhere. I think Peter D'Eath has a book of this sort, published by CUP.) There is a "beyond the slow roll approximation" section, which is good, and the chapter of inflationary model building is the best I have seen. The level of mathematics is pretty much nil, anyone with basic algebra could cope. Other points of interest are that (1) the authors develop all spectra (power spectrum, spectrum of tensor perturbations etc.) from what they call the "curvature perturbation", which is new to me, although there's absolutely nothing at all wrong with it, (2) the section on large-scale structure (Press-Schecter et. al.) which is included, and (3) the fact that the bibliography gives eprint numbers for the quoted papers. A minor downside is a small amount of forward referencing. It's concise, modern and lucid, and the website has up-to-date info. Excellent.

                            Book Description

This controversial book examines one of the most fundamental questions of modern cosmology: how much matter is there in the Universe? This issue affects theories of the origin and evolution of the Universe as well as its geometrical structure and ultimate fate. The authors address this debate and point out the most likely avenues for determining the actual density of Universe matter in both visible and invisible forms by pulling together evidence from all available sources. They conclude that the balance of arguments presently lies with a density of around twenty percent of the critical density required for the Universe to ultimately recollapse. Written by two eminent cosmologists, this topical and provocative book will be essential reading for all cosmologists and astrophysicists.

                                Book Description

Gamma-ray astronomy began in the mid-1960s with balloon satellite, and, at very high photon energies, also with ground-based instruments. However, the most significant progress was made in the last decade of the 20th century, when the tree satellite missions SIGMA, Compton, and Beppo-Sax gave a completely new picture of our Universe and made gamma-ray astronomy an integral part of astronomical research. This book, written by well-known experts, gives the first comprehensive presentation of this field of research, addressing both graduate students and researchers. Gamma-ray astronomy helps us to understand the most energetic processes and the most violent events in the Universe. After describing cosmic gamma-ray production and absorption, the instrumentation used in gamma-ray astronomy is explained. The main part of the book deals with astronomical results, including the somewhat surprising result that the gamma-ray sky is continuously changing.

                                  Book Description

The Local Group is a small cluster of galaxies of which thirty-five members are currently known, including the Milky Way. With characteristic clarity of expression, Sidney van den Bergh provides a complete overview of all that is known about the galaxies of the Local Group and their evolution. He also places this knowledge in the wider context of continuing studies of galaxy formation and evolution, the cosmic distance scale, and the conditions in the early Universe. This volume thoroughly details our current understanding of each of the thirty-five members of the Local Group, as well as those galaxies previously regarded as possible members. The book goes on to examine the mass, stability and evolution of the Local Group as a whole and includes many important, previously unpublished results and conclusions.

The Local Group is a small cluster of galaxies of which 35 members are currently known, including the Milky Way. At least half of all galaxies in the Universe are thought to belong to similar groups. This authoritative volume provides a comprehensive and up-to-date synthesis of what is currently known about the Local Group. It begins with a summary of each member galaxy, as well as those galaxies previously regarded as possible members. The book examines the mass, stability and evolution of the Local Group as a whole and includes many important previously unpublished results and conclusions. With clarity, Professor van den Bergh provides a masterful summary of all that is known about the galaxies of the Local Group and their evolution, and expertly places this knowledge in the wider context of on-going studies of galaxy formation and evolution, the cosmic distance scale, and the conditions in the early Universe.

It is one of the best books to introduce the subject, very easy to read and learn even without instructor, I highly recommend it undergraduate level, in spit of it a little bit expensive but it is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars The biggest things in the universe..........2003-05-21

The book `Galactic Astronomy: Structure and Kinematics', by Dimitri Mihalas and James Binney, is a classic, basic text for those interested beyond the basic level of what a galaxy is and how it is structured.

This is a revision of a text first written in 1967 -- as scientific advances have proceeded at an ever increasing speed, this text too is lacking in many of the most recent discoveries and interpretations. However, it still provides a significant introduction to many basic ideas and patterns that have not changed over time. There has been a follow-up by James Binney and Michael Merrifield published recently.

Galactic astronomy, with the increasing understanding of large-scale physics and the increasing data from telescopes, both visual and extra-visual, has made great strides in understanding the composition, motions and developments of galaxies -- not only spiral galaxies such as our own, but other galactic shapes and structures, too. This book addresses the structure and kinematics. A word of explanation: kinematics is the study of motion without reference to the forces which cause the motion -- dynamics addresses that, and that is not included in this text, but rather left for a second volume.

This volume begins with a basic overview of the our conception of our own galaxy, giving a brief historical overview of explanations about the Milky Way and how this developed into the idea of a disc of stars; the recognition of our Sun being not in the centre but rather in a more unremarkable spot on one of the arms of the galaxy; the increasing knowledge from better and better observational data of the number of stars and other constituents of the galaxy, and the plotting of movement of individual stars and the collective motion of the galaxy. With the additional charting of dark matter, globular clusters, and other pieces, an increasingly accurate portrait of our home galaxy has been made.

The volume then gives a 'refresher' on astronomical terminology and concepts as related to galactic astronomy. Positions and coordinate systems, motions, measurements using parallax, stellar spectra, magnitudes and colours, energy distributions, and a refresher on the cataloguing system help to put the rest of the text in perspective. Particularly as galaxies are primarily made up of stars, the physical properties stars--masses, evolution, types of stars--are examined in detail, along with information about interstellar absorption and other galactic constituents.

Then, galactic astronomy begins in earnest, with a discussion of the distribution of stars and other elements in our own galaxy. Methods of star counting, apparent versus real distribution of stars and elements, distribution in the disc and distribution in the spheroidal component, as well as stellar populations are covered. From here, a description of other types of galaxies (morphology, magnitudes, distances, spectrophotometric properties) enlarges the ideas of galactic ideas. In examining other galactic types, Mihalas and Binney give a cautionary tale, one that is true in observational astronomy generally -- one thing may look like another, even with the most sophisticated of measuring tools. People may make assumptions about observational data trends that can skew large-scale ideas of the entire universe.

`Biases of the kind...may affect our understanding of the Universe in two important ways. (1) We may be unaware of the existence of numerous compact galaxies or diffuse, faint galaxies, which together might contribute significantly to the mass density and dynamics of the Universe, and which might feature prominently in the world views of observers whose skies are either darker or less hazy than our own. (2) We may seriously misjudge the nature and size of 'normal' galaxies.'

While our data today is yet again much better than that used when this text was compiled, these caveats are still of importance, as the hunt for dark matter, less luminous objects, and hidden material still continues.

In discussing the kinematics, the motion of galaxies, Mihalas and Binney begin with solar and stellar motions, and then proceed from there. Using relative parallax measurements and motion around the galactic centre, they proceed to describe the kinematics of stars both in the disk and the halo (the spheroidal-component), also observing the varying velocities. Estimation and application of general rotation laws from our own galaxy to other galaxies is a rather difficult one to observe, given the continuing difficulties of pinpointing individual constituents in vastly distant galaxies for measurement.

This is a book on how galaxies are, and some basic information about the motion of galaxies. A follow-up volume, published in 1987, dealt with galactic dynamics. Many questions remained unanswered at the time of publication, and still remain unanswered. However, for the serious astronomer (amateur or professional -- and astronomy is one of the few sciences in which to be an amateur is a respected status), this book gives insight and information on a fascinating branch of the study of the universe. Intended for late undergraduate and graduate-level study.

This collection of the original papers of one of the pioneers of black hole and big bang theory is an excellent compendium of work on the subject. It shows the development of the theory, along with various co-authors, such as Penrose, Hartle, Gibbons, etc., from 1970 to 1992, during which most of this theory was developed. He discusses various possible quantum states as well as topologies of the universe and their possible outcomes in terms of its evolution in time. Highly technical, for the specialist only, not the general public, as were some of his other books.
