The consulting profession has become one of the fastest-growing industries in the '90s, and observers expect that both the demand for such services and the avocation's undeniable allure will continue to draw people into the profession. Customer Reviews:
Covers the "business side" of consulting quite well.......2007-01-09
This book is great for learning about how to run your consulting business. It's assumed that you already know about to do the consulting work, so the focus is specifically on managing the business. It covers topics like financials, record keeping, billing, managing client relationships, and marketing efforts.
On the plus side, the book offers a lot of creative ideas to the reader - especially when it comes to managing client relationships and marketing efforts. A potential downside, however, is that many people may not feel comfortable with a lot of the ideas...many are kind of "off-the-wall" and would really require just the right kind of personality to be pulled off well.
A "Must Have" for All Consultants.......2005-10-05
The subtitle of this book should be "What You Always Wanted to Know About Consulting But Didn't Know Who to Ask." Elaine is very generous in sharing her knowledge and experience with colleagues and potential competitors. The book is straight-forward, practical, and immensely readable. It covers everything from what to carry in your briefcase to what ethical considerations you may face. Not just for new consultants, this book has something for everyone in the profession.
Very light on content.......2002-11-01
This disappointing book skirts the issue of consulting and instead uses generic advice about building any business. It consists of laundry lists, not usable advice. Bottom line: This will not help anyone build a consulting business.
An Excellent Read!.......2002-10-17
One of the difficulties of independent consulting is the loss of colleagues to "bounce ideas with." Elaine's book helps to fill that gap! It's extremely easy to read, full of information, very practical, and well-organized! Elaine talks about lifestyle changes as well as business considerations-the complete guide for a new or an experienced consultant!
It's a waste of money even for beginner.......2002-05-02
Sure this book is only for beginner or outsider of Cosulting business. But then, for the price of this book, I would rather buy a much cheaper book but with more useful information and ideas - such as Consulting for Dummies. The book is full of motherhood statements and it is more liked written by a grand mom and she called herself consultant; But come on, Consulting is a highly skillful business that require structural, systematic yet creative thinking. Overall, I think this book is a waste of money for experienced consultant. While for beginner, the reader will risk the wrong impression that it's this easy to win a consulting work - highly unlikely in a complex and competative world.

Book Description
This could be the most important book you will read this year. Around the office at Chelsea Green it is referred to as the "pharmaceutical Silent Spring." Well-known author, teacher, lecturer, and herbalist Stephen Harrod Buhner has produced a book that is certain to generate controversy. It consists of three parts:
1. A critique of technological medicine, and especially the dangers to the environment posed by pharmaceuticals and other synthetic substances that people use in connection with health care and personal body care.
2. A new look at Gaia Theory, including an explanation that plants are the original chemistries of Gaia and those phytochemistries are the fundamental communications network for the Earth's ecosystems.
3. Extensive documentation of how plants communicate their healing qualities to humans and other animals. Western culture has obliterated most people's capacity to perceive these messages, but this book also contains valuable information on how we can restore our faculties of perception.
The book will affect readers on rational and emotional planes. It is grounded in both a New Age spiritual sensibility and hard science. While some of the author's claims may strike traditional thinkers as outlandish, Buhner presents his arguments with such authority and documentation that the scientific underpinnings, however unconventional, are completely credible.
The overall impact is a powerful, eye-opening expos' of the threat that our allopathic Western medical system, in combination with our unquestioning faith in science and technology, poses to the primary life-support systems of the planet. At a time when we are preoccupied with the terrorist attacks and the possibility of biological warfare, perhaps it is time to listen to the planet. This book is essential reading for anyone concerned about the state of the environment, the state of health care, and our cultural sanity.
Customer Reviews:
Compassion for Plants.......2007-10-02
The beginning of the book held my interest, but then it waned. Somehow I just lost interest and still have not finished it. But I will try.
Excellent and thoughtful reading!.......2007-01-10
This book is a change of pace. It is a book that makes you ponder about life itself.
A Beautiful and Poetic Call to Action.......2006-09-16
This book is absolutely wonderful and exquisitely written. I loved the author's writing style, but especially appreciated his much-needed message. I can only hope that more people will continue to read this book and take away its powerful statement and do something with it! I plan on buying some of this author's other works, and couldn't suggest this book more! It's a true gem!
Powerful and Profound.......2006-04-13
This is a staggeringly powerful and important book. Our relationship with the earth and all of its inhabitants is crucial to our continued biological, psychological and spiritual health and our survival as a species. Why we continue to ignore and deride this very real fact is a devastating mystery to me - this book, however, not only illuminates, in poignant and heart-breaking ways, our continued ignorance, but offers the reader the opportunity to begin learning how to reestablish this most fundamental of relationships. Liberally sprinkled with some truly excellent quotations from various authors, activists and thinkers, and full of some terrifying information about the pharmaceutical industry, this book is a captivating read. It is an incredibly useful text for anyone, most especially for those practicing a plant-based system of healing, as it gives a philosophical groundwork that every holistic herbalist can incorporate into their practice and their lifestyle.
A labor of love that speaks from every page.......2005-02-26
This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Thoughtful, poignant, well written, it even brought me to tears at some points. I learned so many things I didn't know, which doesn't happen for me very often, sad to say. I have a pretty good idea how destructive man has been to the environment, but there were chapters in this book that opened my eyes even further, particularly when it comes to the ripple effect of the pharmaceutical industry.
But more than that, the author discusses with due respect the indigenous history of working with plants and how dismissing that history in the name of profit, power and control serves no one.
This book is truly a labor of love that speaks from every page. I had no idea what a page-turner it would turn out to be. Consider yourself forewarned.

Book Description
Bioprospecting--the exchange of plants for corporate promises of royalties or community development assistance--has been lauded as a way to develop new medicines while offering southern nations and indigenous communities an incentive to preserve their rich biodiversity. But can pharmaceutical profits really advance conservation and indigenous rights? How much should companies pay and to whom? Who stands to gain and lose? The first anthropological study of the practices mobilized in the name and in the shadow of bioprospecting, this book takes us into the unexpected sites where Mexican scientists and American companies venture looking for medicinal plants and local knowledge.
Cori Hayden tracks bioprospecting's contentious new promise--and the contradictory activities generated in its name. Focusing on a contract involving Mexico's National Autonomous University, Hayden examines the practices through which researchers, plant vendors, rural collectors, indigenous cooperatives, and other actors put prospecting to work. By paying unique attention to scientific research, she provides a key to understanding which people and plants are included in the promise of "selling biodiversity to save it"--and which are not. And she considers the consequences of linking scientific research and rural "enfranchisement" to the logics of intellectual property.
Roving across UN protocols, botanical collecting histories, Mexican nationalist agendas, neoliberal property regimes, and North-South relations, When Nature Goes Public charts the myriad, emergent publics that drive and contest the global market in biodiversity and its futures.

Book Description
As the medicinal plant industry blooms into a billion dollar business, it reaches beyond collection, propagation, harvesting and sale of crude vegetal drugs into product formulation, packaging and dispensing of sophisticated phyto-pharmaceuticals and herbal preparations. The scientific study of these medicines and the systematic uplifting of the industry to preserve the ancient and serve the modern, is now a global challenge. The Medicinal Plant Industry puts together the various facets of this multi-disciplinary industry and its global interest. It discusses the dire need for developing countries to acquire technologies and techniques for programmed cultivation of medicinal plants. It addresses a wide variety of topics including the old philosophies, modern impact of traditional medicines, and methods of assessing the spontaneous flora for industrial utilization. It covers aspects of cultivation and climatic variations, biological assessment and formulation, process technologies, phytochemical research and information sources. The book reviews highly developed traditional medicine in China and India, and covers experiences in Africa and other continents.

Book Description
Make sure your crops are market-ready with the aid of harvest and post-harvest mechanization
Medicinal and Aromatic Crops presents harvest and post-harvest mechanization methods for the profitable production of market-ready medicinal crops. This practical handbook includes photos, detailed figures, and schematic drawings of machines that will help bring existing design ideas to life and inspire new ones for use in harvesting and primary processing. The book also includes general information on medicinal and aromatic plants, current production trends, and "how-to" instructions for improving the production process.
Even though the use of mechanization contributes not only to a marked increase in production, but also enables uniform quality and a decrease in drudgery for everyone involved, there's a distinct lack of material available of the subject. Medicinal and Aromatic Crops fills in the gap, providing a thorough, comprehensive look at every aspect of the mechanism of growing, harvesting, and processing, including production steps and procedures, safety and quality, plant drying, the use of renewable energy sources, dry processing, extraction, industrial usage, financial analysis, and software usage.
Medicinal and Aromatic Crops examines:
environmental concerns
manual and semi-mechanized harvesting
transport
the use of solar energy and solid biomass energy
pre- and post-drying processes
plant parts removal
cutting, crushing, and milling
post-drying separation and classification
water and steam distillation
and much more!
Medicinal and Aromatic Crops is an invaluable guide to harvest and post-harvest mechanization for anyone involving in plant production and for agriculture educators and students.

Book Description
The world production of citrus fruit has risen enormously, leaping from forty-five million tons a year to eighty-five million in the last 30 years. Today, the potential applications of their essential oils are growing wider, with nearly 40% of fresh produce processed for industrial purposes. Citrus: The Genus Citrus offers comprehensive coverage on all aspects of the botany, cultivation, processing industry, chemistry and uses of Citrus and its oils. It describes the different citrus species; their environmental, geographical, and historical context; and their chemical composition and properties in detail. Following a chapter on citrus juice technology, the international panel of contributors describe the stages of preparation and processing methods of the juice, from cold extraction and distillation to the use of supercritical fluids, and the chemical reactions involved. The authors also discuss by-products, quality control, world markets, and regulations in the industry, and how analytical methods, such as mass spectrometry and HPLC, are used to characterize the Citrus essential oils. Citrus: The Genus Citrus explores the current and future applications of Citrus oils, which include flavorings for alcohol, soft drinks, food, as well as fragrances for cosmetics and beauty products. Authors also discuss the therapeutic properties of these oils in traditional medicine and modern pharmaceuticals. Anyone involved in food sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, cosmetics, and plant sciences will no doubt find this volume to be of great value and interest.
