Book Description
Combining the strengths of human cognition and computer power, this book presents a practical application of artificial intelligence to the problem of retrieving information and facts with high-quality measures of precision and recall. It describes the System for Heuristic Retrieval of Information and Facts (SHRIF), a powerful and versatile system that is designed to exploit the lessons provided by humans who are able to attain partial, conflicting, and fuzzy goals effectively, despite limitations in speed and precision. In addition to information retrieval, SHRIF can serve as a model for any system with a variety of information processing objectives, from diagnosis and troubleshooting to classification and causal reasoning.
Findler employs the methodologies of knowledge representation, clustering techniques, natural language understanding, and information and fact retrieval to make use of the lessons provided by human effectiveness and flexibility in a variety of fuzzy domains. These lessons enable systems to assimilate new information, respond quickly to varying needs for information and facts, find sensible compromises in conflicting situations, distinguish between what is more and less important and between correct and faulty pieces of information, make inductive judgments on the basis of disjoint observations, discover and use partial similarities and analogies, and detect and correct errors.
Nicholas V. Findler is Research Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Arizona State University.

Product Description
In this book an internist with 50 years of medical practice, describes a novel computerized diagnostic algorithm. This algorithm can diagnose diseases that afflict an actual patient, as opposed to existing programs that are useful only for diagnostic training purposes. Emulating human reasoning, it accurately solves complex medical diagnostic problems. The primary purpose of this interdisciplinary book is to introduce the mentioned algorithm. It also is useful as a reference text because it explains in common language-medical terminology and diagnostic principles to computer scientists; and probability, logic, and heuristic concepts to physicians.

Book Description
Fuzzy and Neuro-Fuzzy Systems in Medicineprovides a thorough review of state-of-the-art techniques and practices, defines and explains relevant problems, as well as provides solutions to these problems. After an introduction, the book progresses from one topic to another - with a linear development from fundamentals to applications. Chapters discuss: o a historical perspective of fuzzy systems technology and neuro-fuzzy systems technology in medicine and biology o the relationship of fuzzy logic to the human brain o analysis and classification of signals using fuzzy, neuro-fuzzy, and wavelet methods o wavelet analysis combined with neuro-fuzzy systems in contouring gated SPECT images of ventricles o a detailed application based on a knowledge-based system that uses fuzzy techniques, multispectral analysis, and image processing algorithms o applications in the field of dentistry o a dedicated system for myocardial ischemia diagnosis o a typical expert system used in intensive care units o designing and tuning fuzzy rules for medical diagnosis o knowledge processing, decision-making, and control strategies combined with control methods in medical equipment o current technological problems and trends in the neural and fuzzy hardware implementation field The well-balanced chapters cover all the major fields in medicine and biomedical engineering, including imaging, prosthetics, psychology, medical equipment, diagnosis, and treatment.
Customer Reviews:
Major editorial event for neuro-fuzzy medical comunity.......2000-04-23
The monograph, containing interdisciplinary studies on the use of neuro-fuzzy paradigm in medicine and biomedical applications, is structured in three parts and is composed of contributed papers by independent teams of researchers. It creates a bridge between two scientific communities, information technology researchers, on one side and specialists in medicine and biomedical engineering, on the other side, filling a gap that originates in the lack of communication between the two parties. The book brings to the reader contributions by researchers who have been active in the field in the past few years. The list of authors comprises 35 researchers affiliated to outstanding research and academic institutions that cover a very wide geographic area. The monograph addresses a large range of readers, including fuzzy - engineering community, researchers in medicine and biomedical engineering, teachers, doctoral students. Each chapter is provided with an extended list of references, and most of contributed papers contain comprehensive explanation of terminology. At the end of the book, a very rich index of terms is given. A very good idea is having a section that introduces the contributors to the reader, so the papers can be placed in the larger context of their scientific work. We state that the monograph is a major contribution to the dissemination of knowledge in the scientific community; no doubt that we face an editorial event. The book may be regarded as a good acquisition for the reader involved in the approached scientific domains.

Book Description
Modern medicine generates, almost daily, huge amounts of heterogeneous data. For example, medical data may contain SPECT images, signals like ECG, clinical information like temperature, cholesterol levels, etc., as well as the physician's interpretation. Those who deal with such data understand that there is a widening gap between data collection and data comprehension. Computerized techniques are needed to help humans address this problem. This volume is devoted to the relatively young and growing field of medical data mining and knowledge discovery. As more and more medical procedures employ imaging as a preferred diagnostic tool, there is a need to develop methods for efficient mining in databases of images. Other significant features are security and confidentiality concerns. Moreover, the physician's interpretation of images, signals, or other technical data, is written in unstructured English which is very difficult to mine. This book addresses all these specific features.

Book Description
Terahertz technology has moved on from being a useful but expensive circuit technique, applied largely in astronomy and space science, to become a subject in its own right, with important applications - terahertz imaging in particular. Indeed, the driving force in terahertz technology is currently imaging and spectroscopy. We now have the means to obtain images and chemical information in this frequency band. The images reproduced in this volume are striking and, not surprisingly, the clinical and analytical uses are the subject of intense activity. There is still, however, no complete range of active THz electronic components, but an encouraging conclusion of the book is that THz electronics will become necessary in communications systems in the foreseeable future.
Terahertz technology has come of age, and the future lies open to new, exciting science and vital applications.
