2 out of 5 stars Much Better Out There.......2004-06-06

I got this book mainly because the second edition was published in 2004 so I thought it would have the most up-to-date information on cover letter writing. Out of this whole book, only essentially the first 15 pages address how to write a cover letter--and this they do poorly. The main advice they give repeatedly is to include in your cover letter those skills and experience that match what your potential employer is looking for. Good advice, but they don't really tell you how to do this without making your cover letter merely a smaller version of your resume. I was really dissappointed with this book and would recommend other sources, even if they are perhaps a bit older.

4 out of 5 stars The best book I ever read.......2007-02-13

My book, Time Windows, by Kathryn Reiss was mysterious and full of suspense. It was so great it kept me up for hours after my bed time. The main character, Miranda, moved to an old house in the middle of nowhere from New York City. At first she doesn't like the house. Then she entered the attic and found a dollhouse that can reveal a secret about her house's past. This book made you feel like you were sitting in the attic with Miranda peering into the windows of the doll house. By Nicole

IT TAKES YOU FOR A RIDE AND A RIDE OF MYSTERY AND SUSPENSE IT IS SO IF YOU LIKE MYSTERYS AS WELL AS SUPER NATURAL STUFF LIKE I DO COME READ THIS! I JUST WANTED THE AUTHOR OF THIS BOOK TO KNOW THAT SHE DID AN AWESOME JOB!!

          5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2006-09-17

I was fourteen when I read this book. I am now 22, and the impression that this book left with me is still fresh. I would not advise someone under the age of tweleve to read this book. It's a seamlessly weaved tale where the heroine, Miranada, is well prepared by the recent events in her life to take on this mystery. Even so, it is an intense mystery. Although it is a "children's" book, Dorthy's murder is awful. It is necessary to explain why her character is not at rest, but it leaves a haunting impression with the reader long after the book is over.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Believe This is a Young Adult Novel!.......2006-07-26

I happen to like all sorts of books--children's books, young adults, fiction, non-fiction, biographies, even the classics! A well-written book appeals to all ages. Look at the HARRY POTTER phenomena...................I for one admit to being passionate about those fabulous books and I am far removed from a young adult (middle aged if you must know).

When I was a school counselor not too long ago, I always went to the library's annual scholastic book sale. I usually bought five to ten books--everytime thinking that when I retired, I'd have more time to read (I buy a ton of books from Amazon too). Subsequently, I have hundreds and hundreds of books in my house, many unread (as I'm constantly buying more). I happened upon TIME WINDOWS the other day, picked it up to read the first few pages. I wanted to see if I would like it. WOW! This is an undeniably well-written novel by Kathryn Reiss. Full of fantasy, time travel, history, even a death, TIME WINDOWS has all the ingredients for a compelling and enjoyable read.

This is the story of thirteen year-old Miranda, who along with her Physician mother Helen and her father Phillip, (who is taking a break from university teaching) decide to pull up their roots in New York City for the small town life in the pre-Revolutionary war town of Garnet. They move into a large and majestic home that is very run down. Miranda is drawn to the attic where she finds a large dollhouse that is an exact replica of the Browne's new home. A slave who was hiding in this 'Galworthy' house during the civil war built the dollhouse. Amazing things happen to Miranda when she peers through the windows--she visits two families--one in 1904 and the other in the 1940's. She is a witness to all their comings and goings and conversations. She can even smell bread baking in the oven or the perfume that the lady of the house is wearing. Horrible things start happening to these families and eventually the same horrors plague the Browne family. Exact sentences are repeated throughout the century. There is a great mystery here and Miranda, along with her new friend Dan must solve it before the house destroys her family as it has in previous generations.

This novel is recommended for any age--young or old. If you are looking for a quick and easy read with a fabulous story that has a mystery and fantasy, get this book!

            5 out of 5 stars Time Windows.......2000-09-06

As Miranda peered through the old-fashioned dollhouse's windows, a little girl with blonde hair appeared. She was bouncing a red-and-blue ball and trying to hit it with a wooden paddle. Her striped blue dress and puffed sleeves depicted the fashion of the nineteenth century. Miranda was shocked to see this in the dollhouse. She realized that the dollhouse was not the usual dollhouse but a portkey to the past. When Miranda moved to her new house, she tried to solve a problem that happened to a previous owner of the house. Her only connecion to the past was the dollhouse.

I recommend this book because the suspense and mystery makes this novel thrilling. This novel will attract anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

In this conclusion to the York Trilogy, is Dan closer to answering his questions, and discovering who left the footprints at the window?

Dan has had enough of the uncertainty surrounding his life these days. While he may not be able to change his family's troubling secret, he intends to put a stop to his encounters with mysterious gypsies -- both in the present and the past.

By summoning the gypsies to join him, Dan is once again propelled into the past, this time to the era of the Black Death. Will Dan survive the widespread disaster that threatens to destroy the world as he knows it? And if so, will it change him forever?

Dan's journey begins with Shadows on the Wall and continues with Faces in the Water.

5 out of 5 stars Reaching the end.......2002-07-08

Phyllis Ann Naylor's haunting York trilogy dips back into time travel and the haunting presence of the gypsy family. Though it doesn't answer all the questions, "Footprints at the Window" gives a note of finality to this trilogy.

It's been a stressful summer for Dan: He's found that Huntington's Disease runs in his family and may strike him down when he's in his forties, his father is being tested, and he is haunted by magpies and visions of the Faws, gypsies, whom he encountered in York -- even to the point of being drawn back into the waning days of the Roman Empire. Now a family of gypsies has come to the land near where his grandmother lives, and it's making Dan nervous.

What he finds is seemingly another Faw family, a few years down the line and with radically different names. And while trying to help the girl Oriole -- who bears a striking resemblance to Orlenda -- Dan is drawn back in time. Now it's the Middle-Ages, during the time of the Black Death, and he is the only person to recover from the disease. He encounters another incarnation of the Faw family, and for the second time tries to help the beautiful Orlenda escape to safety. What will happen will change Dan's life forever...

Perhaps the only flaw of this trilogy is that in the third book, some of the threads are left dangling. For example, I was never entirely sure why it is that Joe, Dan, and the Faws are repeatedly featured in the past; the implication seems to be that they were reincarnated, especially since Blossom refers to her grandfather being the exact image of Ambrose Faw.

Naylor hasn't lost her talent for atmosphere, either between the characters or in a given place. Dan shows a plausible growth in character, and a new philosophical bent that he did not have in the first book. This new maturity is reflected in his actions in the Middle-Ages and his increased acceptance of "what will come will come."

As the story progresses, we also see that it is less a story about gypsies, past lives or incarnations, or time travel, but rather a story about Dan and the inner struggles that are brought into focus and greater clarity by the events of the trilogy. Gratifyingly, there is also a note both of finality and of "starting again" in this book, a wistful acceptance, and a very real sense that sometimes a thing like Huntington's Disease can't be predicted.

A good conclusion to an extremely good trilogy, "Footprints" is definitely worth checking out.

When Ewan Dart moves to Scotland, he discovers that his new house has a freaky habit of flickering in and out of different centuries. Alone in his bedroom one night, Ewan encounters the ghost of Elspeth, a girl who died in 1937 just as the house shifted in time. Desperately afraid of something she's certain is lurking in the locked closet, Elspeth pleads for Ewan's help. In this spooky and satisfying ghost story, Ewan must solve the mystery of Elspeth's entrapment and overcome his own fears to help her escape.
