    4 out of 5 stars Diversity Directive.......2001-08-20

Hayles and Russell do a stellar job of explaining Diversity in tangible, concrete, user-friendly terms. They avoid the esoteric jargon and verbiage that typically accompany the "softer" disciplines in the business and corporate world. In its place they identify operational definitions and processes as well as empirical results models that can actually be measured using conventional methods. This is an extremely refreshing book that effectively (and efficiently) serves as a wondersful resource for Diversity professionals. It also, just as effectively, educates other interested stakeholders who simply want to better understand this phenomenon that is poised to be the defining factor that will most probably determine the winners and lossers of the early twenty-first century.

      Book Description

The importance of addressing diversity in the workplace has gained widespread recognition in recent years. Among the forces calling attention to diversity in the workplace are the changing nature of the workforce, globalization of labor and customer markets, and organizational restructurings, such as mergers and joint ventures, which bring diverse corporate cultures together. Most firms, however, are only beginning to evaluate and adjust policies that were originally designed for yesterday's more homogeneous workforce. The large-scale organizational changes attracting attention are, for now, the exception to the rule, but they do present examples of what can be accomplished. Toward that end, this volume describes how nine prominent organizations have responded to the challenge. Featuring descriptive case studies from such firms as Xerox, Digital Equipment, Pacific Bell, American Express,Coopers

            Book Description

The coming energy crisis caused by a peak in global oil and natural gas production will profoundly affect the lives of all North Americans. As the price of these vital fuels rises, homeowners will scramble to cut their fuel bills. Two options for meeting the upcoming challenge are dramatic improvements in home energy efficiency and efforts to tap into clean, affordable, renewable energy resources to heat and cool homes, to provide hot water and electricity, and even to cook. These measures can result in huge savings and a level of energy independence.

The Homeowner's Guide to Renewable Energy tells you how. It starts by outlining the likely impacts of fossil fuel shortages and some basic facts about energy. It then discusses energy conservation to slash energy bills and prepare for renewable energy options. Focusing carefully on specific strategies needed to replace specific fuels, the book then examines each practical energy option available to homeowners:

The Homeowner's Guide to Renewable Energy gives readers sufficient knowledge to hire and communicate effectively with contractors and, for those wanting do installations themselves, it recommends more detailed manuals. With a complete resource listing, this well-illustrated and accessible guide is a perfect companion for illuminating the coming dark age.

3 out of 5 stars A decent overview; left me wanting more details........2007-09-05

I read this book cover-to-cover over the course of a couple of weeks. I'm new to the field of renewable energy, so you'll have to take my criticisms for what they are, a critique of the writing:

            1) The author frequently repeats himself, and sometimes goes so far to state that he is repeating himself, and that the reader should refer back to a previous section.

            2) Many of the references are "so and so claims such and such" or references to the Home Power magazine. It's great that the author cites his sources, but it often left me wondering if the author placed any stock in the claim being reported.

            3) The author frequently refers to his own house, which was designed from the ground up to use renewable energy. While this is neat, it doesn't seem applicable to readers who already own houses (with a 99% chance that they're not nearly as efficient, and that it's not possible to convert them).

            4) I would have enjoyed more information on solar power, since it seems to be the most applicable in urban and suburban areas. Instead, it received basically equal treatment alongside micro-hydroelectric and wind power.

Still, it's a good book - 3.5 stars - and contains a number of references to other sources of information on the topic.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative book........2007-07-19

I found this book to be very informative. It provides a wealth of knowledge about being self-sufficient. I am particularly interested in solar and wind power and this book provided some very good information about each of these subjects. Would highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about living green.

            4 out of 5 stars Great Direction.......2007-05-12

My wife and I are in the process of designing our retirement home here in the Colorado foothills. We want to build one that is both energy efficient/independent and retain that "curb appeal". This book has provided us with a great many ideas that will help us achieve that goal.

            5 out of 5 stars renewable energy.......2007-05-10

I think this book was great, very informative but I wished there were more pics to go along with the techniques. Overall I love it!

              Book Description

This book comprises an excursion through space weather, a scientific topic in rapid growth and with growing impact and complications for technological societies.

The emphasis of the present volume is on the origins of space weather: the Sun and the solar mind. Very much as the Sun`s electromagnetic radiation drives the Earth climate, our space weather is driven by the solar wind.

This book addresses students and scientists working, or interested in, the field and provides a thorough introduction to the topic for those who wish to become acquainted with the basic solar physics at the origin of space weather.

                Book Description

Physics of Solar System Plasmas provides a comprehensive introduction to the plasma physics and magnetohydrodynamics that are needed to study the solar wind and magnetosphere. The text includes a broad introduction to plasma physics, including important discussions of kinetic theory, single particle motion, magnetohydrodynamics, geomagnetically trapped energetic particles and the physics of magnetic reconnection. This leads into a thorough description of the Sun and the solar wind, and, finally, the author addresses magnetospheric physics. Among the topics covered here are magnetospheric morphology, bow shocks, magnetospheric convection and electrical currents, substorms, ionospheric physics, magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling, auroral physics and the interaction of the solar wind with the planets. Problem sets at the end of each chapter make this a useful text for advanced undergraduate students in astrophysics, geophysics, or atmospheric sciences. Graduate students and researchers will also find it a valuable source of information.

5 out of 5 stars The Definative Venus.......2007-07-22

This is an good book for the scientifically minded interested in Venus. It starts from the outside and works in peeling back the layers of Venus like an onion. It makes a clear distinction between the accepted facts and the still debated theories.

It is a little out of date, but is an excellent place to start.

I have to warn those who are not scientific or technical professionals, this is not a book for laymen. Each chapter is written like a scientific paper, which can make for fatiguing reading if you're not use to the style.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you could possibly want to know........2000-02-20

I've only read a few of the papers, but they are very good. If you know lots of phyics, this book is everything you want to know about Venus and then some. Most papers are using the Magellion data.

                    Book Description

The Sun continually ejects matter into space, blowing a huge bubble of supersonic plasma. This solar wind bathes the whole solar system and shapes all planetary environments. The recent growth of space technology has considerably increased our knowledge of this medium. This book presents a modern introduction to the subject, starting with basic principles and including all the latest advances from space exploration and theory. It contains a short introduction to plasma physics and discusses the structure of the solar interior and atmosphere, the production of solar wind and its perturbations. It explains the objects of the Solar System, from dust to comets and planets, and their interaction with the solar wind. The final sections explore the astrophysical point of view. The topics are treated at various levels of difficulty both qualitatively and quantitatively. This book will appeal to graduate students and researchers in earth and atmospheric sciences, and astrophysics.

                      Book Description

This up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM covers the NASA Genesis Mission. Although we have no eyewitness account of the formation of the solar system, scientists are attempting to understand what happened back then from pieces of evidence including meteorites and interstellar dust grains. An additional piece of evidence that would help in this quest for understanding is an accurate knowledge of the detailed composition of the Sun. In that quest, during August 2001, NASA launched the Genesis spacecraft. The Genesis spacecraft journeyed toward the Sun. It went to a place outside the Earth's magnetic field where the Earth and Sun gravities are balanced. While in orbit, the spacecraft bathed in solar wind that is flung out from the Sun. Solar wind particles are similar to material from which the planets formed, and are atoms, ions, or high-energy particles. Once in position, the Genesis spacecraft uncovered its collectors . Particles of solar wind were embedded int! o ultra-pure silicon wafers and other pure materials. After 29 months in orbit, the sample collectors were re-stowed and returned to Earth. In September 2004, an exciting mid-air recovery of the sample return capsule will take place over the Utah desert. The solar wind samples will be stored and cataloged under ultra-pure cleanroom conditions and made available to the world's scientific community for study. The Genesis mission will yield the first samples of extraterrestrial materials returned in the new millennium. These particles of solar wind will provide significant insights for scientists as they interpret the results of other NASA planetary missions.

As a bonus, there is complete coverage of the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft mission to explore Saturn and its moon, Titan. With its stunning rings and dozen of moons, Saturn is an intriguing planet for many reasons. Of the 31 known moons orbiting Saturn, Titan is the largest. Bigger than the planet Mercury and our own moon, Titan is of particular interest to scientists because it is the only moon in the solar system with its own atmosphere. Contents include nearly 500 pre-encounter image files in JPG, GIF, and TIF formats, along with 67 video clips in QuickTime and MPEG formats, with depictions of the spacecraft, instruments, launch, and mission profile.

This CD-ROM has over 6000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software and Reader software for Windows and Mac is included. Advanced search and indexing features are built into Acrobat Reader, providing a complete full-text index. The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable!

Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. This book-on-a-disc makes a superb reference work and educational tool.

                        Book Description

NASA's Genesis mission, launched on August 8, 2001 is the fifth mission in the Discovery series. Genesis addresses questions about the materials and processes involved in the origin of the solar system by providing precise knowledge of solar isotopic and elemental compositions for comparison with the compositions of meteoritic and planetary materials. This book describes the Genesis mission, the solar wind collector materials, the solar wind concentrator and simulations of its performance, the plasma ion and electron instruments, and the way these two instruments are used to determine the solar wind flow regime on board the spacecraft. The book is of interest to all potential users of the data returned by the Genesis mission, to those studying the isotopic and chemical composition of the early solar system whose work will be influenced by the measurements made by Genesis and by all those interested in the design and implementation of space instruments to study space plasmas.
