5 out of 5 stars Great teaching resource........2007-01-04

This is an excellent case book. I have been using it for a number of years and find that my students learn a great deal from the wide variety of cases. I strongly recommend this book. In fact, I dropped the text and use this instead. I supplement the case discussions but students get much more from the class by using this book.

5 out of 5 stars Good for newbie Supervisor and as a refresher.......2005-06-24

This book is well laid out with basic statement on how to function in the new supervisory position and some practical examples of situations you may find yourself addressing. There are questions to help you notice areas that you may have just scanned over. It may take only 55 minutes to read, however it will take some time to naturedly gain the skill sets.

I found several sections valuable in this shop. Especially the section on "supervising People Who Used to Be Peers." This constantly happens here.

    Book Description

Pierce and Newstrom's Leaders and the Leadership Process, 3/e is a collection of readings, self-assessments, and applications on leadership intended to give students a feel for the breadth and richness of this study. This experiential paperback book provides students with a sense of the complexity associated with organizational leadership as well as an understanding of the pieces that serve to define leadership. The text encourages students to engage in dialogue and to think critically about the leaders and the leadership process. Self-assessments, which begin most chapters of the book, encourage students to look at their own personal leadership style. A capstone section of Applications, in the form of case studies and experiential exercises, asks students to move beyond theory to the practice of leadership. The authors use this combination of readings, self-assessments, and applications to create a “leadership mosaic” – one that encourages students to examine the concepts, propositions, perspectives, and theories one at a time as it builds towards the students ultimate unique leadership mosaic.

2 out of 5 stars Leadership Theory Is Not Practice.......2003-03-11

I used this book to teach an undergraduate course on leadership. The book was not my choice. The articles and research were edited in such a way that the reader really didn't feel that any of the theories were supported or substantiated by the data.

If it was the authors' intention to leave room for personal reflection and opinion, they succeeded. As for the assessments, the text, including the instructor's manual, provided little direction for interpretation.

I wish Pierce and Newstrom spent more time on and went into greater detail with the chapter introductions.

3 out of 5 stars Tedious, but less than some..........2002-08-02

(2nd ed.) This book is a compendium of 44 articles on leadership, intended for higher education audiences, especially management students in college. The authors also include 19 self-assessment instruments for the reader. The book finishes with 11 case studies and "experiential" exercises (as opposed, I guess, to cognitive exercises?).

The topics are slanted toward social-psychological (roles, gender effects, group dynamics, leader behaviors, cross-cultural contexts, and so forth). As a result, the writings can be tediously "scientific." The book is very well referenced, but, as the authors state, it is not a review of the leadership literature.

The cover drawing is one of five people putting sails on a boat that is not in the water. I presume this is sort of a Magritte comment on leadership. I think it also is a comment on the patchwork tedium of the subject. And after all the sails are on, what does one know about leadership? And, is one a leader?

                  Book Description

Sheep are considered by many to be among the most regal of all game animals. One of the most important success stories in wild game management has been the recovery of our wild sheep populations. Return of Royalty: Wild Sheep of North America is a celebration of the return of wild sheep to many of its historical ranges.

The unregulated hunting of the pioneer days and disease from the introduction of domestic livestock nearly decimated wild sheep populations in North America by the late nineteenth century. Within four decade's time, the all-time low of 9,000 bighorn sheep in 1960 has been replaced today by an impressive number of 70,000 sheep. This remarkable recovery has been documented in a new book by two widely-respected wildlife biologists (Drs. Dale E. Toweill and Valerius Geist) and provides fascinating accounts of the decline and recovery of North American wild sheep in every state or province where wild herds exist.

The authors have compiled a wealth of condensed information on wild sheep evolution, behavior and management, and a perspective on the importance of sheep to the lives of Native Americans and explorers. This book includes state-by-state accounts of each race of sheep; historic numbers; transplants and restoration efforts; and present day numbers and distribution. Each account offers current maps of distribution and includes photographs of wild sheep, and sheep habitat, for each state or province.

Toweill and Geist also provide their insights into wild sheep management for the future - identifying landmark projects such as the Hells Canyon Initiative, National Parks Wild Sheep Restoration effort, and new programs to "create" wild sheep habitat.

Although written by professional wildlife biologists, this book is nontechnical and is intended for a diverse audience of conservationists, photographers, sportsmen, and everyone who enjoys wild sheep. Famed wildlife artist Ken Carlson provided a painting of Rocky Mountain bighorns for the dust jacket, and his sketches of wild sheep are liberally scattered throughout the chapters.

Return of Royalty was published through a joint effort between the Boone and Crockett Club and the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep.

                    Book Description

The idea of chaos figures prominently in mathematics today. It arose in the work of one of the greatest mathematicians of the late 19th century, Henri Poincaré, on a problem in celestial mechanics: the three body problem. This ancient problem--to describe the paths of three bodies in mutual gravitational interaction--is one of those which is simple to pose but impossible to solve precisely.

Poincaré's famous memoir on the three body problem arose from his entry in the competition celebrating the 60th birthday of King Oscar of Sweden and Norway. His essay won the prize and was set up in print as a paper in Acta Mathematica when it was found to contain a deep and critical error. In correcting this error Poincaré discovered mathematical chaos, as is now clear from Barrow-Green's pioneering study of a copy of the original memoir annotated by Poincaré himself, recently discovered in the Institut Mittag-Leffler in Stockholm.

Poincaré and the Three Body Problem opens with a discussion of the development of the three body problem itself and Poincaré's related earlier work. The book also contains intriguing insights into the contemporary European mathematical community revealed by the workings of the competition. After an account of the discovery of the error and a detailed comparative study of both the original memoir and its rewritten version, the book concludes with an account of the final memoir's reception, influence and impact, and an examination of Poincaré's subsequent highly influential work in celestial mechanics.

This book is somewhere between an historical essay and a blow-by-blow analysis of one of Poincare's most important papers, which gave rise to many significant developments in 20th-century mathematics. You have to really like the subject of differential equations to get into this.

How do three celestial bodies move under their mutual gravitational attraction? This problem has been studied by Isaac Newton and leading mathematicians over the last two centuries. Poincaré's conclusion, that the problem represents an example of chaos in nature, opens the new possibility of using a statistical approach. For the first time this book presents these methods in a systematic way, surveying statistical as well as more traditional methods. This book should be essential reading for students in a rapidly expanding field and is suitable for students of celestial mechanics at advanced undergraduate and graduate level.

It then surveys statistical and perturbation methods for the solution of the general three body problem, providing solutions based on combining orbit calculations with semi-analytic methods for the first time. 2 out of 5 stars For mathematical physicists.......2006-12-27

This book begins by recounting what the student would learn in a physics class on Newtonian mechanics and planetary motion and then goes into specifics of the three-body problem. While unsolvable in closed form, the solution, in general, involves chaotic dynamics. Nonetheless, there is much to be had in studying various forms of the problem under differing conditions. This book goes a long way to exploring these forms of how different scenarios can be approached.

The authors begin with a presentation of Newtonian mechanics and uses these to solve the two body problem. The authors use physics to motivate the mathematics and derive the equations of motion---here, and throughout the book. Thus, the discussions are complete and present the ideas from the view of mathematical physics.

After discussion of the two-body problem we are introduced to Hamiltonian mechanics and some restricted three-body problems such as satellite orbits, and scatterings of bodies from a binary orbit. Other topics include escapes, three body scattering, and capture. The final topics deal with perturbations and various astrophysical problems such as black holes and the evolution of comet orbits.

Throughout the book the authors present diagrams to illustrate their points but these diagrams are limited in their utility. The authors could have presented more illustrative diagrams and figures to better qualify the text.

When I started reading I thought the book would discuss chaos and its relationship to the three body problem. After all, that's the first thought that comes to mind today. There is mention of this phenomena but very little, and no attention given to simulating orbits of three body motion. For me, this was a disappointment.

Finally, the spirit of the book is mathematical physics and consequently, the authors often leave much work to the reader to sort through the mathematics. I often found, for example, that I had to review earlier parts of the text and seek equations---always present somewhere in the text but not explicitly noted nor cited---to follow the derivations and fill-in many of the steps.

In short, this is a good text on the mathematical physics of the problem for the experience practitioner. Everyone else, I'm afraid, will find it a challenge to read and follow the mathematics.

                        Book Description

This book focuses on exactly treatable classical (i.e. non-quantal non-relativistic) many-body problems, as described by Newton's equation of motion for mutually interacting point particles. Most of the material is based on the author's research and is published here for the first time in book form. One of the main novelties is the treatment of problems in two- and three-dimensional space. Many related techniques are presented, e.g. the theory of generalized Lagrangian-type interpolation in higher-dimensional spaces. This book is written for students as well as for researchers; it works out detailed examples before going on to treat more general cases. Many results are presented via exercises, with clear hints pointing to their solutions.

Cambridge, 1888. Miss Vanessa Duncan is a young schoolmistress recently arrived from the countryside. She loves teaching and finds the world of academia fascinating; everything is going so well. But everything changes when a Fellow of Mathematics, Mr. Akers, is found dead in his room from a violent blow to the head. Invited to dinner by the family of one of her charges, Vanessa meets many of the victim’s colleagues, including Mr. Arthur Weatherburn, who had dined with Mr. Akers the evening of his death and happens to be Vanessa’s upstairs neighbor. Discussing the murder, she learns of Sir Isaac Newton’s yet unsolved ‘n-body problem’, which Mr. Akers might have been trying to solve to win the prestigious prize. As the murder remains unsolved, Vanessa’s relationship with Arthur Weatherburn blossoms. Then another mathematician, Mr. Beddoes is murdered and Arthur is jailed. Convinced of his innocence and with a theory of her own, Vanessa decides to prove her case. But when a third mathematician dies, it becomes a race against time to solve the puzzle. . .

I believe that Catherine Shaw understands mathematics. I even believe that she understands academia. Unfortunately, see no evidence that she understands human nature and that is at the heart of a good detective novel. Although the three body problem has some interesting elements, it fails to really engage the reader. Shaw mercilessly twists the plot (and probability) to fit her solution to fit her mathematical model. Cute, but not compelling.

Honestly, I would have been inclined to give the book a lower star rating simply on its merits. However, Shaw has some strong points as a writer and it seems to me that if she writes a book in which she likes the audience more than her own ideas then she could go far. Plus, she made use of the Lewis Carroll conundrums. She gets extra credit for that.

If you are a fan of academic cozies, then this may be your cup of tea. No explicit violence, adult themes or language. Should be suitable for readers of all ages. Math majors should get an extra kick out of the book.

This textbook treats Celestial Mechanics as well as Stellar Dynamics from the common point of view of orbit theory making use of the concepts and techniques from modern geometric mechanics. It starts with elementary Newtonian Mechanics and ends with the dynamics of chaotic motions. The book is meant for students in astronomy and physics alike. Prerequisite is a physicist's knowledge of calculus and differential geometry. Volume 1 begins with classical mechanics and a thorough treatment of the 2-body problem, including regularization, followed by an introduction to the N-body problem with particular attention given to the virial theorem. Then the authors discuss all important non-perturbative aspects of the 3-body problem. A final chapter deals with integrability of Hamilton-Jacobi systems.

Everyone experiences fear at one time or another ranging from ordinary worry to crippling phobia. Offering personal stories, inspiring quotes, and practical suggestions, The Little Book of Courage guides readers through a three-part process for facing, feeling, and transforming any fear, no matter how large or small. Courage comes by learning to work through fear rather than against it, the authors explain. They show that fear is simply a message — not a monster — and that it can be transformed into kindness, patience, serenity, and acceptance.
