Leaders and the Leadership Process: Readings, Self-Assessments, and Applications
Jon Pierce , and John W Newstrom Manufacturer: McGraw-Hill/Irwin ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0072482567 |
Book Description
Pierce and Newstrom's Leaders and the Leadership Process, 3/e is a collection of readings, self-assessments, and applications on leadership intended to give students a feel for the breadth and richness of this study. This experiential paperback book provides students with a sense of the complexity associated with organizational leadership as well as an understanding of the pieces that serve to define leadership. The text encourages students to engage in dialogue and to think critically about the leaders and the leadership process. Self-assessments, which begin most chapters of the book, encourage students to look at their own personal leadership style. A capstone section of Applications, in the form of case studies and experiential exercises, asks students to move beyond theory to the practice of leadership. The authors use this combination of readings, self-assessments, and applications to create a “leadership mosaic” – one that encourages students to examine the concepts, propositions, perspectives, and theories one at a time as it builds towards the students ultimate unique leadership mosaic.Customer Reviews:
Leadership Theory Is Not Practice.......2003-03-11
If it was the authors' intention to leave room for personal reflection and opinion, they succeeded. As for the assessments, the text, including the instructor's manual, provided little direction for interpretation.
I wish Pierce and Newstrom spent more time on and went into greater detail with the chapter introductions.
Tedious, but less than some..........2002-08-02
The topics are slanted toward social-psychological (roles, gender effects, group dynamics, leader behaviors, cross-cultural contexts, and so forth). As a result, the writings can be tediously "scientific." The book is very well referenced, but, as the authors state, it is not a review of the leadership literature.
The cover drawing is one of five people putting sails on a boat that is not in the water. I presume this is sort of a Magritte comment on leadership. I think it also is a comment on the patchwork tedium of the subject. And after all the sails are on, what does one know about leadership? And, is one a leader?

Return of Royalty: Wild Sheep of North America

Book Description
Sheep are considered by many to be among the most regal of all game animals. One of the most important success stories in wild game management has been the recovery of our wild sheep populations. Return of Royalty: Wild Sheep of North America is a celebration of the return of wild sheep to many of its historical ranges. The unregulated hunting of the pioneer days and disease from the introduction of domestic livestock nearly decimated wild sheep populations in North America by the late nineteenth century. Within four decade's time, the all-time low of 9,000 bighorn sheep in 1960 has been replaced today by an impressive number of 70,000 sheep. This remarkable recovery has been documented in a new book by two widely-respected wildlife biologists (Drs. Dale E. Toweill and Valerius Geist) and provides fascinating accounts of the decline and recovery of North American wild sheep in every state or province where wild herds exist.
The authors have compiled a wealth of condensed information on wild sheep evolution, behavior and management, and a perspective on the importance of sheep to the lives of Native Americans and explorers. This book includes state-by-state accounts of each race of sheep; historic numbers; transplants and restoration efforts; and present day numbers and distribution. Each account offers current maps of distribution and includes photographs of wild sheep, and sheep habitat, for each state or province.
Toweill and Geist also provide their insights into wild sheep management for the future - identifying landmark projects such as the Hells Canyon Initiative, National Parks Wild Sheep Restoration effort, and new programs to "create" wild sheep habitat.
Although written by professional wildlife biologists, this book is nontechnical and is intended for a diverse audience of conservationists, photographers, sportsmen, and everyone who enjoys wild sheep. Famed wildlife artist Ken Carlson provided a painting of Rocky Mountain bighorns for the dust jacket, and his sketches of wild sheep are liberally scattered throughout the chapters.
Return of Royalty was published through a joint effort between the Boone and Crockett Club and the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep.

Poincare and the Three Body Problem (History of Mathematics, V. 11)
June Barrow-Green Manufacturer: American Mathematical Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821803670 |
Book Description
The idea of chaos figures prominently in mathematics today. It arose in the work of one of the greatest mathematicians of the late 19th century, Henri Poincaré, on a problem in celestial mechanics: the three body problem. This ancient problem--to describe the paths of three bodies in mutual gravitational interaction--is one of those which is simple to pose but impossible to solve precisely.Poincaré's famous memoir on the three body problem arose from his entry in the competition celebrating the 60th birthday of King Oscar of Sweden and Norway. His essay won the prize and was set up in print as a paper in Acta Mathematica when it was found to contain a deep and critical error. In correcting this error Poincaré discovered mathematical chaos, as is now clear from Barrow-Green's pioneering study of a copy of the original memoir annotated by Poincaré himself, recently discovered in the Institut Mittag-Leffler in Stockholm.
Poincaré and the Three Body Problem opens with a discussion of the development of the three body problem itself and Poincaré's related earlier work. The book also contains intriguing insights into the contemporary European mathematical community revealed by the workings of the competition. After an account of the discovery of the error and a detailed comparative study of both the original memoir and its rewritten version, the book concludes with an account of the final memoir's reception, influence and impact, and an examination of Poincaré's subsequent highly influential work in celestial mechanics.

Book Description
How do three celestial bodies move under their mutual gravitational attraction? This problem has been studied by Isaac Newton and leading mathematicians over the last two centuries. Poincaré's conclusion, that the problem represents an example of chaos in nature, opens the new possibility of using a statistical approach. For the first time this book presents these methods in a systematic way, surveying statistical as well as more traditional methods. This book should be essential reading for students in a rapidly expanding field and is suitable for students of celestial mechanics at advanced undergraduate and graduate level.Download Description
How do three celestial bodies move under their mutual gravitational attraction? This problem has been studied by Isaac Newton and leading mathematicians over the last two centuries. PoincarÈ's conclusion, that the problem represents an example of chaos in nature, opens the new possibility of using a statistical approach. For the first time this book presents these methods in a systematic way, surveying statistical as well as more traditional methods. The book begins by providing an introduction to celestial mechanics, including Lagrangian and Hamiltonian methods, and both the two and restricted three body problems. It then surveys statistical and perturbation methods for the solution of the general three body problem, providing solutions based on combining orbit calculations with semi-analytic methods for the first time. Classical Many-Body Problems Amenable to Exact Treatments: (Solvable and/or Integrable and/or Linearizable...) in One-, Two- and Three-Dimensional Space (Lecture Notes in Physics)
Francesco Calogero Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540417648 |
Book Description
This book focuses on exactly treatable classical (i.e. non-quantal non-relativistic) many-body problems, as described by Newton's equation of motion for mutually interacting point particles. Most of the material is based on the author's research and is published here for the first time in book form. One of the main novelties is the treatment of problems in two- and three-dimensional space. Many related techniques are presented, e.g. the theory of generalized Lagrangian-type interpolation in higher-dimensional spaces. This book is written for students as well as for researchers; it works out detailed examples before going on to treat more general cases. Many results are presented via exercises, with clear hints pointing to their solutions.

Book Description
Cambridge, 1888. Miss Vanessa Duncan is a young schoolmistress recently arrived from the countryside. She loves teaching and finds the world of academia fascinating; everything is going so well. But everything changes when a Fellow of Mathematics, Mr. Akers, is found dead in his room from a violent blow to the head. Invited to dinner by the family of one of her charges, Vanessa meets many of the victim’s colleagues, including Mr. Arthur Weatherburn, who had dined with Mr. Akers the evening of his death and happens to be Vanessa’s upstairs neighbor. Discussing the murder, she learns of Sir Isaac Newton’s yet unsolved ‘n-body problem’, which Mr. Akers might have been trying to solve to win the prestigious prize. As the murder remains unsolved, Vanessa’s relationship with Arthur Weatherburn blossoms. Then another mathematician, Mr. Beddoes is murdered and Arthur is jailed. Convinced of his innocence and with a theory of her own, Vanessa decides to prove her case. But when a third mathematician dies, it becomes a race against time to solve the puzzle. . .Customer Reviews:
