He says a lot without really saying anything useful in this book. It starts well enough with a few examples, but he never really goes anywhere with them.

5 out of 5 stars Not published in 2003.......2007-02-27

This is a classical book in the area of HRM in M&As. However, this book is not a new version of Buono & Bowditch (1989). It is just a reprint in 2003. So if you are looking for new references of recent studies, you will not find it here...
I think amazon should change March 2003 phrase next to the title since it is misleading.

        Book Description

Financials alone don't make an M&A deal work. Equally important is what's behind them--an organization's people. How to understand this reality and benefit from it is the thrust of this unusually comprehensive, practical, readable, but conceptually rigorous book. Daniel and Metcalf see HR executives as change agents during the delicate maneuverings before a deal is done, and then after, when it's time to tackle the fine-grained problems of integrating disparate corporate cultures and the people who vitalize them. They examine the recent and ongoing waves of mergers and acquisitions across industries, setting them in the broader context of organizational change. With concepts, theory, and real-life examples drawn from their long, impressive experience as consultants and executives, Daniel and Metcalf provide step-by-step guidance through the stages common to all corporate combinations. They define and explain the roles to be played in the process by HR professionals and executives elsewhere in the organization, and show how, by interacting productively with each other, they will thus maximize the total contribution to the success of any corporate transaction.

This book covers the full scope of Merger & Acquisition work from A to Z. It would be useful for lawyers or HR professionals or execs who want to get the people side of things right. Filled with real-life examples and forms. I wish I had had this book when I was going through my first deal- it gives you a good overview of what to expect and is written in plain English.

It covered not only the HR side of doing deals, but also included information about leadership, employee communications, merging compensation and pay systems, and retaining talent. The book also has an extensive appendix with "how to" documents included which will make the jobs of many HR professionals much easier in the future. This is a book written for many different types of professionals- from executives to lawyers to HR professionals to internal communicators.

          Book Description

Mergers, acquisitions, and alliances continue to be almost an everyday feature of the contemporary business scene, yet at least half prove to be unsuccessful. The authors show the contribution that psychology can make to our understanding of the merger phenomena - how it affects organizational performance, and how it affects the managers and employees involved.

Mergers, Acquisitions and Strategic Alliances is intended as a guide to successful organizational marriage. Great emphasis is placed on the issue of cultural compatibility as it concerns partner selection, integration practices and venture outcomes.

The book also focuses on cross-national mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures. With the increasing economic activity within the European Union and between the unions of other countries, there is a need to know more about the corporate and national cultures in these strategic alliances. The authors have drawn upon an extensive body of research based on recent cases in a wide cross section of industries across Europe.

The book is unique in showing the actual effect mergers and acquisitions have on people, and consequently on the performance of the 'new' organization. It will be particularly relevant for decision makers - those who are involved in planning and implementing a large organizational change, and those responsible for ensuring successful integration afterwards. It would also be extremely useful for postgraduate management students, personnel executives and management consultants.

The essential guide to successful organizational marriage
Focuses on cultural compatibility, partner selection, integration practices and venture outcomes
          Covers cross-national mergers

5 out of 5 stars Great Capture of Recent Merger Research in Regard to HR.......2000-12-09

I found this book to be tremendously useful due to its combination of scientific research as well as illustrative case studies. Too many books focus solely on subjective measures of the human side of mergers and acquisitions while ignoring recent studies in the field. This book is the only one that I have seen that truly is helpful for consultants or scientists who want to brush up on current trends on the subject, or develop a foundation for future research and projects. This book is highly recommended for HR personnel, I/O Psychologists, executives or anyone else involved in the merger process.

2 out of 5 stars Ok Book, if you are looking for the How To?.......2000-08-04

I have the view of the investor who would like to be better able to analyze announced public acquisitions and their odds of being completed. In general this book does a good job explaning basic securities laws. I am glad of reading this book. Now if any one can suggest any other book regarding mergers in deeper and with more technical information, please email me. Thanks.

                Book Description

Why so many mergers fail and what can be done to make them succeed.

Worldwide merger and acquisition activity has run over $100 billion in recent years. But the M&A failure rate is high—roughly half fail and the financial gains of even "successful" mergers are often neutral. Why is this the case? This book argues that the reason is because financial and strategic considerations still dominate merger negotiations and that the "soft" people issues are largely ignored in the belief that they can be sorted out later during the integration phase. In reality, however, people are the real "deal makers" and that it is only when individuals choose to commit their creativity and energy to a merger that the real synergies flow. Merger success is all about leading and managing people—and the people issues need addressing right from the start of negotiations.

Through reference to studies of such mergers as Time Warner/AOL, Chrysler and Daimler-Benz, Compaq and Digital Equipment, and Zeneca and Astra, this book examines where companies so often get things wrong and lays out a clear course for how to get it right.

                              Book Description

Thorvald Nicolai Thiele was a brilliant Danish researcher of the 19th Century. He was a professor of Astronomy at the University of Copenhagen and the founder of Hafnia, the first Danish private insurance company. Thiele worked in astronomy, mathematics, actuarial science, and statistics, his most spectacular contributions were in the latter two areas, where his published work was far ahead of his time. This book, written for researchers and graduate students of statistical, science and mathematics history, is concerned with his statistical work. It evolves around his three main statistical masterpieces, which are now translated into English for the first time: 1) His article from 1880 where he derives the Kalman filter; 2) His book from 1889, where he lays out the subject of statistics in a highly original way, derives the half-invariants (today known as cumulants), the notion of likelihood in the case of binomial experiments, the canonical form of the linear normal model, and develops model criticism via analysis of residuals. 3) An article from 1899 where he completes the theory of the half-invariants. Thiele: Pioneer in Statistics also contains three papers, written by A. Hald and S.L. Lauritzen which describes Thiele's statistical work in modern terms and puts them into an historical perspective. The texts are supplemented with introductory material on Thiele's life and other interests, as well as with explanatory comments from the translator in the form of footnotes.
