5 out of 5 stars Just what I needed.......2005-10-19

If you are taking Accounting 1 and 2 only buy this book. Both books are in this one. No one told me to buy this book instead of the Acct. 1 book. So I bought 2 different books which was more money. I had just went by the ISBN # on Accounting 1.
(NOT AMAZON'S FAULT). I thought I would give a heads up to some of you wanting to take Acct. 1 and 2
Amazon is great!

1 out of 5 stars mislead.......2004-03-28

I was told this book had some writing and highlighting, yet when it got here (very quickly by the way on shipping) it had more than SOME! Every page in the first 15 chapters are highlighted and there are to many notes in it to mention. I am very displeased, i feel I WAS LIED TO - I BOUGHT THIS BOOK FROM-
Kate 12888, AND I WILL NEVER TRUST HER AGAIN, PEOPLE SHOULD BE HONEST WHEN MAKING A BUSINESS DEAL- INCLUDING SELLING BOOKS!!!
I WOULD NEVER HAVE MISLEAD SOMEONE OVER A TEXTBOOK! THIS I FIND TO BE CHILDISH- AND SELF CENTERED! ALTHOUGH I WILL NOW HAVE TO USE THIS BOOK- I COULD HAVE BOUGHT A CLEAN NEW ONE FOR $10.00 MORE!!!! THANKS FOR YOUR LEFT OVER JUNK! Kate 12888!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Frustrating and disappointing and a waste of my good money........1999-11-03

STUDENTS BEWARE !!! It is frustrating, disappointing AND a waste of my good money to have bought this book, only to later discover that I could not buy the subsequent volume to cover only Chapters 16-28. I now have to purchase Ch.ONE thru 28, because these money-grabbing scoundrels did not write/publish the follow-up ! I am extremely disappointed with having to re-purchase the first 15 chapters, which are now, to me, superfluous! They are a done deal! All I need is the textbook for ch. 16-28. The Study Guide/Working Papers for 16-28 are available for purchase...why not the damned textbook???

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Still an excellent resource, albeit a little old.......2007-02-21

Although this is book is starting to get a little dated, it remains an outstanding resource for practitioners working in performance appraisal settings, and especially for researchers looking for a good overview of the topic. Particularly strong chapters cover topics including training raters (Hauenstein), politics in the performance appraisal process (Kozlowski et al.), and fairness in PA (Gilliland & Langdon). Chapters that have become somewhat outdated include the chapters on legal trends in PA (Malos) and multisource feedback (Dalessio). I still use selections from this book when teaching courses on performance appraisal, and I have only docked it one star due to its age. In most respects, this is a must-have book for anyone interested in performance management.

5 out of 5 stars A practical source for HR professionals........1999-09-19

As stated by series editor Manuel London, "the current volume, edited by J.W. Smither, provides state-of-the-art methods for performance management. The authors recognize the strategic, systemic role of a performance appraisal process that evaluates employees or behaviors that are important to organizational success and ties the appraisal results to rewards and development...The goal is to design a performance appraisal process that is fair and applies in different organizational situations and contexts. New forms of appraisal are described, such as 360-degree survey feedback and self-assessment. The book shows how to increase rater accuracy and how to use appraisals for employee development. Overall, the book is valuable resource to practitioners who want to evaluate and revamp their appraisal systems to meet the changing needs of their organizations."

In this context, as a sample, in thirteenth chapter of this book " Performance-Based Pay Plans" Robert L. Heneman and Maria T. Gresham focus the issue of how organizations can most effectively make the link between performance appraisal and compensation and incentive systems. As stated by them " this requires an understanding of the need for performance-based pay, the compensation context, types of reward systems, design issues, and implementation issues." Thus each of this topics have been examined as a literature review :

                * types of pay and performance plans : merit pay, team-based merit pay, skill-based pay, competency-based pay, piece-rate pay, standart hour plan, group incentives, suggestion systems, team recognition plans, gainsharing, sales commissions and team sales plans, profit sharing and stock sharing, executive pay.

                * pay and performance plan effectiveness.

                * design issue : integration with business strategy and organizational culture, motivational considerations, performance measurement levels.

                * implementation issues : measurement, fairness, communications.

Not only this chapter, but this book as a whole is highly recommended for HR professionals.

5 out of 5 stars The standard in performance appraisal texts.......1999-03-27

Dr. Smither has pulled together a wonderful group of authors in developing a book that covers the most important aspects of performance appraisal. A must-have for those engaged in this often difficult aspect of management.

Veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and professionals in the animal, poultry, equine, and dairy sciences will welcome this resource that combines the study of pathology and parasitology. This book explains technical procedures, parasite life cycles, zoonotic potential, diagnosis, and treatment, and it includes a “how to” section that is valuable in the clinical setting. An accompanying CD-ROM Image Library with extensive color images of parasites and various pathologies is an excellent supplement to the discussions in the book.

2 out of 5 stars Depends on your background.......2007-05-18

This book was required reading for a class and very hard to get through. I read a lot of dry materials but this was more like a "teaching story." That being said, other people in the class loved it but did not like when the "science part" was explained and just wanted the story. Helpful for people who have little exp. with working with families but just another case study for everyone else.

                  Book Description

Light observed from distant objects is found to be deflected by the gravitational field of massive objects near the line of sight - an effect predicted by Einstein in his first paper setting forth the general theory of relativity, and confirmed by Eddington soon afterwards. If the source of the light is sufficiently distant and bright, and if the intervening object is massive enough and near enough to the line of sight, the gravitational field acts like a lens, focusing the light and producing one or more bright images of the source. This book, by renowned researchers in the field, begins by discussing the basic physics behind gravitational lenses: the optics of curved space-time. It then derives the appropriate equations for predicting the properties of these lenses. In addition, it presents up-to-date observational evidence for gravitational lenses and describes the particular properties of the observed cases. The authors also discuss applications of the results to problems in cosmology.

4 out of 5 stars nice confirmation of General Relativity.......2005-04-11

Gravitational lenses are one of the most beautiful manifestations of Einstein's theory of General Relativity. The book explains how from the equations of GR, a massive star that is in the line of sight between us and a distant bright star can cause the production of multiple images. Several of these have been observed in the visible spectrum. Eloquent images.

Thus, the book also goes into the observational evidence for such lensing. This involves testing the light from the purported images, to affirm whether or not the spectral properties of the images are similar enough that they are in fact images of the same star. Are the redshifts the same, for example?

It is also shown that the lensing also gives us a diagnostic handle on the star doing the lensing. Very useful, as the star might be so distant in its own right as to preclude several other types of analysis.

                    Book Description

The theory, observations, and applications of gravitational lensing constitute one of the most rapidly growing branches of astrophysics. The gravitational deflection of light generated by mass concentrations along a light path produces magnification, multiplicity, and distortion of images and delays photon propagation from one line of sight relative to another. The huge amount of scientific work produced over the last decade on gravitational lensing has clearly revealed its already substantial and wide impact and its potential for future astrophysical applications.

The up-to-date contributions in this book are based on the lecture notes of the 33rd Saas–Fee Advanced Course of the Swiss Society of Astronomy and Astrophysics, entitled Gravitational Lensing: Strong, Weak, and Micro. The book comprises four complementary parts, written by leading experts in the field, constituting a genuine textbook about gravitational lensing.

Students and researchers alike will benefit from this comprehensive presentation of the astrophysical and astronomical aspects of gravitational lensing.

                      Book Description

This monograph, unique in the literature, is the first to develop a mathematical theory of gravitational lensing. The theory applies to any finite number of deflector planes and highlights the distinctions between single and multiple plane lensing. Introductory material in Parts I and II present historical highlights and the astrophysical aspects of the subject. Among the lensing topics discussed are multiple quasars, giant luminous arcs, Einstein rings, the detection of dark matter and planets with lensing, time delays and the age of the universe (Hubble's constant), microlensing of stars and quasars. The main part of the book---Part III---employs the ideas and results of singularity theory to put gravitational lensing on a rigorous mathematical foundation and solve certain key lensing problems. Results are published here for the first time. Mathematical topics discussed: Morse theory, Whitney singularity theory, Thom catastrophe theory, Mather stability theory, Arnold singularity theory, and the Euler characteristic via projectivized rotation numbers. These tools are applied to the study of stable lens systems, local and global geometry of caustics, caustic metamorphoses, multiple lensed images, lensed image magnification, magnification cross sections, and lensing by singular and nonsingular deflectors. Examples, illustrations, bibliography and index make this a suitable text for an undergraduate/graduate course, seminar, or independent thesis project on gravitational lensing. The book is also an excellent reference text for professional mathematicians, mathematical physicists, astrophysicists, and physicists.

                        Book Description

Gravitational lensing is by now sufficiently well understood that it can be used as a tool of investigation in other astrophysical areas. Applications include the determination of the Hubble constant, probing the dark matter context of galaxies and the mapping of the universe to the identification of otherwise invisible large-scale structures. Each chapter of the book covers in a self-contained manner a subfield of gravitational lensing, with the double aim of describing in a simple way the basics of the theory and of reviewing the most recent developments as well as applications foreseen in the near future. The book will thus be particularly useful as a high-level textbook for nonspecialist researchers and advanced students wishing to become familiar with the field all the way up to the forefront of research.

                          Product Description

What are black holes? They may be bridges into other universes or pathways into the past or future. They infinitely warp space and time, allowing nothing to escape: not matter, not even light. They are stellar corpses that have crushed themselves into oblivion, seemingly suspending the traditional laws of physics. The Big bang may have peppered the universe with primordial black holes, as small as protons but as massive as mountains. The universe itself may be disappearing into the final black hole. Black holes (BHs) and their warping effect on spacetime are described, beginning with a discussion on stellar evolution that includes white dwarfs, supernovas and neutron stars. The structure of static, rotating, and electrically charged BHs are considered, as well as the general theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, the Einstein-Rosen bridge, and wormholes in spacetime. Attention is also given to gravitational lenses, various space geometries, quasars, Seyfert galaxies, supermassive black holes, the evaporation and particle emission of BHs, and primordial BHs, including their temperature and lifetime. The author's engrossing, non-technical explanations are enhanced by numerous illustrations.
