    4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2005-05-19

Any professional whose job involves inspiring and motivating other professionals to work as a team probably has a pretty good idea of what it's like to conduct a symphony with an orchestra of soloists. Author Geoff Smith has written a very useful book that will help you harmonize your band of hotshots. While some professionals relish team interaction, many appear allergic to harnessing their brilliance on behalf of the group. Law firms, CPA practices, ad agencies, architecture offices, research labs and other service firms all rely on professionals. But to move the firm ahead, those professionals should check their egos at the door. Not very likely, you may think, and you'd be right. At least, not likely without this book's coaching on how to manage professionals with a light touch and still get the job done. We strongly recommend this book to those leading professionals in small and medium-sized firms, more so than in corporations, though it will help anyone who wants to make the members of a professional team march to the beat of a not-so-different drummer.

Written by a specialist in designing, managing, and implementing programs for leaders, Leading The Professionals: How To Inspire & Motivate Professional Service Teams a solid guide to the sometimes tricky task of directing a firm's top talents. Many professionals prefer to do things their own way, and resist being directed or working as part of a team - whether they are highly qualified, creatives, knowledge workers, or conceptualists, it is often the human tendency to rely on one's own expertise first that can hinder as much as it helps. Leading The Professionals emphasizes that the key to dealing with talent is the "light touch" - encouraging and supporting rather than being overbearing and controlling. A practical guide to getting the job done, featuring sensible advice and numerous anecdotes to illustrate its practical human resource management principles.

5 out of 5 stars Leading the Professionals-Review.......2004-04-07

As a professional accountant, leading a business unit in a major public practice, I was attracted to what Geoff Smith had to say about the complex area of leadership in the professions. I was not disappointed. Whether you are an accountant, lawyer or architect or you work in advertising, education or the public sector, this book will help you if you are already a leader or if you are about to take on that role. I thought the book was well written with an easy style and a focus on practical advice. Management theory is kept to a minimum. Instead, Smith shares his own experiences, interviews leaders in successful professional organisations, sets out useful checklists and presents real life scenarios with suggestions as to how to deal effectively with issues. I particularly liked the use of quotes from the great and the good at the start of each chapter. My favourite was Sir John Harvey-Jones on the importance of planning to those leading projects: "Planning is an unnatural process; it is much more fun to do something. The nicest thing about not planning is that failure comes as a complete surprise, rather than being preceded by a period of worry and depression.". The book recognises early on that many professionals are wary of being led and becoming leaders themselves. However, by the end, I think even the most sceptical will at least want to reconsider their position. For those who already embrace the benefits of effective leadership in professional organisations, I think this book provides valuable support and an opportunity to look at a fresh approach.

"The Emergence of Agriculture" tells the story of the transition of mankind from a hunter-gatherer existence to agriculture. This transition took place about 10,000 years ago in the Middle East and more recently in the other six areas in which farming and herding are believed to have developed independently. Chapters cover early agriculture in the Middle East, Europe and Africa, East Asia, Middle and South America, and North America. The domestication of wheat, rice, corn, livestock and other crops are discussed.

This is a well-produced, well-illustrated book with good color maps, photos, charts, and graphs. Those familiar with "Scientific American" magazine will recognize the reader-friendly style and format. However, I would have to agree with other readers that the prose is somewhat flat. That being said there's enough good information here to deserve a top rating.

What I found most interesting about the book was the discussion of the development of crops no longer significant for agriculture such as Chenopodium (pigweed) in the Americas. Unrecognized by archaelogists as a crop for many decades, the cultivation of Chenopodium pushes the earliest date of agriculture and urbanization in the United States back to about 5,000 years ago. The author's description of the discovery of early agriculture in North America is vivid and personal because he was a participant in the investigation. Likewise, his description of the development of corn (maize) as a crop is very good.

The agricultural revolution was one of the most -- if not the most --important step forward in the development of civilization. This book does an excellent job examining how agriculture became a reality in several different civilizations around the world.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting account of the origins.......2000-07-05

The book was a little slow going. The topic is probably not noted for its exciting appeal. I did enjoy the new information that it provided. The concept of an almost natural change from wild harvested to domesticated cultigen by virtue of an interface of plant and human needs rather than by conscious efforts on the part of the harvester was interesting. It almost made the process seem inevitable. The information regarding wild plant ancestors of modern domestics, the likely site of origin for and the path of spread of these plants were also interesting. For some reason I found the domestication process of animals somewhat less so. Overall I think the book would be best used as a resource for information rather than an afternoon read.

4 out of 5 stars Dry but very interesting........2000-05-26

This colorful book uses a lot of information and statistical facts to bring the development of agriculture ot light in many regions of the world, even often forgot Africa. Plenty of pictures of the changes in plants and plenty of graphs and charts to help simplify all the information. A good over view of agriculture without getting into individuals findings on this day or that. A good read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of the beginnings of farming.......2000-02-04

The beginnings of farming c. 10,000 years ago fundamentally changed human societies. Collaboration between archjaeologists and natural scientists has done a remarkable job in unravelling the where, when and whys of this story, but previous publications have concentrated on just or a few one regions. This is the first truly global survey of the domestication of plants and animals. It is up-to-date and well written and illustrated, and would be an excellent starting point for anyone interested in this topic. Readers should note that the paperback edition is substantially revised and is therefore preferable to the hardback, which still contains the original text.

Anyone who enjoys this book will also like Jared Diamond's Guns, germs and steel.

        Book Description

The Emergence of Civilization is a major contribution to our understanding of the development of urban culture and social stratification in the Near Eastern region. Charles Maisels argues that present assumptions about state formation, based on 19th-century speculations, are markedly inaccurate. His investigation illuminates the changes in scale, complexity and hierarchy which usually accompany the development of civilization. Maisels furthermore makes conclusions about the dynamics of social change and the processes of social evolution in general, applying those concepts to the rise of Greece and Rome, and to the collapse of the classical Mediterranean world.

        Book Description

In recent years a startling policy innovation has emerged within global and domestic environmental governance: certification systems that promote socially responsible business practices by turning to the market, rather than the state, for rule-making authority. This book documents five cases in which the Forest Stewardship Council, a forest certification program backed by leading environmental groups, has competed with industry and landowner-sponsored certification systems for legitimacy.

The authors compare the politics behind forest certification in five countries. They reflect on why there are differences regionally, discuss the impact the Forest Stewardship Council has had on other certification programs, and assess the ability of private forest certification to address global forest deterioration.

              Book Description

This book tells the story of the creation of the Universe, the creation of our solar system and the formation and development of plant and animal life on Earth, prehuman hominids and the eventual creation of our species, Homo sapiens, 200,000 years ago in East Africa. It offers analysis of the evidence as to the crop circles and their origins and as to extraterrestrial intelligent life in the cosmos. Creation reconciles creationism with science and the theory of evolution. Human beings are not descended from modern apes, but prehuman bipedal hominids were evolved by God from a common ancestor 7 million years ago. Although Darwin's fundamental thesis that all life shares common ancestors is correct, it does not follow that species originate from natural selection. The Universe really is 13.7 billion years old and commenced with the Big Bang. The Big Bang expansion is still ongoing and galaxies continue to rush away from each other. Earth really is 4.54 billion years old. But what caused the Big Bang? And what caused complex life to develop on Earth but nowhere else in this sun system? Why have the Martian Rovers uncovered no fossils or even a shellfish on Mars although oceans once covered that planet's surface? Why are three-quarters of the Earth's surface covered with water?

5 out of 5 stars Dare to think.......2007-04-24

Dr. Umana's Creation: Towards a Theory of All Things, succeeds in doing what has not been done before -- reconciling creationism and intelligent design theory with portions of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. This is a remarkable and original new book, which I encourage everyone to read, scientists and the general public alike. It is a new theory of biological evolution. Dr. Umana draws an important dichotomy in that he endorses, on the one hand, the theory of common descent of species from earlier species, showing that it is proved by the convergence of the sciences. But on the other hand, he shows that Darwinists' notion that new species emerge from natural selection - random or chance incremental mutations over millions of years - is unsubstantiated and refuted by modern microbiology. He demonstrates that the core idea of Darwinism, though an interesting theory in the 1800's, is bad science today. Something else is going on to explain the emergence of life and the origin of species. These are the big issues of our day in the evolution debate, and this is the book we have all been waiting for.
What that "something else" is has never been explained by any scientist or philosopher before Creation. This is the first real effort to show how biological evolution operates in the origin of new species and the emergence of life. Dr. Umana, while agreeing that natural selection is a true force of nature as demonstrated by microevolution (e.g., the development of bacteria to resistance to antibiotics), shows that natural selection cannot explain emergence of new species. One of the author's arguments that caught my attention focused on recent DNA studies as to the evolution of all dog breeds 15,000 years ago in East Asia from a single gene pool of a small group of gray wolves. Dogs in North America did not evolve from North American wolves. Likewise, European dogs did not evolve from European wolves. As Dr. Umana argues, how could this be if natural selection were the explanation for dog evolution? What happened to natural selection in North America or Europe? This latest genetic evidence, among other evidence, disproves Darwin's notion of `natural selection' as the supposed mechanism for the origin of species. This book also analyzes NASA's discoveries on Mars and on other bodies in our solar system to show that life does not just arise one day on its own. Why did life emerge on Earth 3.9 billion years ago, but not on Mars or anywhere else in our solar system? This book offers a new approach in answering these questions.

One of the most intriguing parts of this book is the author's marshalling of the latest NASA findings as to the Big Bang evolution of the cosmos (in his Chapter 1), as scientific evidence to support his theory of evolution. No one has ever analyzed the Big Bang like this before. He also analyzes the crop circle phenomenon, the spate of crop circles being formed all around the world each year, from the latest scientific evidence (Chapter 8), such as the higher germination rates of seeds taken from plants that are found within crop circle formations and the higher radiation levels discovered in crop circles after formation. He demonstrates that something is going on here that cannot be explained away by the supposition of human pranksters. He ties this latest scientific research in with his theory that life emerged not only on earth but elsewhere in the cosmos.

Nothing like this has been done before in terms of the breadth and scope of the scientific phenomena analyzed and explained. It presents the "Big Picture" as to the emergence of life and the origin of species as has never before been done.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2005-12-23

                    Book Description

Asymptotic methods are of great importance for practical applications, especially in dealing with boundary value problems for small stochastic perturbations. This book deals with nonlinear dynamical systems perturbed by noise. It addresses problems in which noise leads to qualitative changes, escape from the attraction domain, or extinction in population dynamics. The most likely exit point and expected escape time are determined with singular perturbation methods for the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. The authors indicate how their techniques relate to the Itô calculus applied to the Langevin equation. The book will be useful to researchers and graduate students.
