Great Book - Highly recommend this!.......2007-04-04
I said inside this book that "It should be in the top drawer
of every employee's desk" and I meant every single word.

Excellent book.......2006-08-20
If you want to earn as much as you can earn, for the work you do -- if you want to be as valuable, indeed as indispensable, to your employer as you can be -- Glenn Shepard explains clearly and completely how and why. And how far. And every bit of it makes perfect sense.
If you've been told to work harder and sacrifice deeper -- but you find that you can't articulate the why and how -- and if you find that the lack of a clear understanding of why and how makes it somehow difficult for you to bring focus and motivation to your efforts to succeed in your employment -- then Glenn Shepard may have answered all your questions.
If you are discouraged by the chaos of the job market and you are seeking desperately to discover how to clearly distinguish yourself in a difficult environment -- the answer to your dilemma awaits your patient perusal in these readable 150 pages.
Mr. Shepard acknowledges that everything he's saying is common sense -- and frequently, book reviewers disdain explanations of common sense. But it's sensible, for lots of people, to have this common knowledge stated concisely and with a clear structure.
If you're trying to become employed -- or if you're already employed, and you're trying to maintain or improve your situation -- this excellent book may be just the turning point you need.
And Mr. Shepard enjoys good food and good service -- and there's nothing wrong with that.
Book Description
While history has immortalized George Washington, it has largely forgotten those who helped to propel him to such greatness--the 32 men who served as his aides-de-camp. "George Washington's Indispensable Men" asserts that Washington relied heavily on these men for help in formulating policy and strategy. His aides were definitely not just "pen men," but real, behind-the-scenes advisors that potentially affected some of his greatest decisions.
Customer Reviews:
this book is great! very readable!.......2006-02-07
I wanted to relate how much I enjoyed reading this book, as most of the reviewers have said that it is "Dense" and a "reference". I have to admit that my wife (an incredibly well read Smithie) took one look at it and said "You're reading that?!"
My reaction was totally different, I could not put it down. It is highly readable, though I would describe myself as "Revolutionary War Buff" In retrospect, I loved many things about it: like the best yet description of the Battle of Monmouth, the Charles Lee smear campaign, the true close relationship between many of the aides and especially the discussion of the historiography of the myths handed from early scholars to the present.
Toward the end of the book Lefkowitz addressed my long term fascination: what it was like inside the Tent with all those educated personages about. Imagine the dsicussion of George Washington, Tench Tighlman, Alexander Hamilton, John Laurens and LaFayette, and their visitors like Ben Franklin, Elbridge Gerry, Gouvereur Morris and John Hancock. The small talk, the banter, the discussion of politics and the issues of the day; I wish I had a time capsule! This book took me one step closer to being there. I took great pleasure from it.

Customer Reviews:
Common Sense & More.......2005-06-06
This book is packed with useful information. Much of the content should already be common knowledge, but there are many thought-provoking statements that any employee - as well as any manager - would do well to think about.
While I was reading this, I was contemplating quitting my own job and started thinking about whether I was the "good employee" that I thought I was. Reading this book prompted me to think about whether I even wanted to be a good employee at my present job or not, and also gave me very helpful hints on what kind of job and manager I want to work with in the future.
The book is also packed with quotes from various business and community leaders. The combination of solid advice and motivational insight makes this book as indispensable as it hopes to makes its readers.
Quick and Easy to Read!.......2004-11-02
I received my book today and already finished reading it! Since each "chapter" is one to two pages long, it made it easy for me to read when I had a few free minutes during the day. The book contains essential information for being a good worker.
Although the book is geared towards employees, managers could use it as a tool to mentor their charges. Since it has quizzes and self-evaluation areas, the book can be used by the manager and employee to look for "soft skills" to improve upon until next review period.
There is no new information in this book. I have read many of the suggestions in different articles or books. However, this book encapsulates it all in one place. I appreciate that. No matter how many books on the subject I had read previously, I found that I still had weak areas I needed to work on.
Nice Little Book About How to Be Effective in the Workplace.......2004-09-27
As an author, I Know how difficult it is to simplify and reduce large masses of content to clean, clear stuff that gets to the point quickly. That's one reason I have so much respect for this book.
It's a nice, tight little handbook that could help anyone be more effective in the workplace. I particularly like the straightforward, clean way it discusses stuff your parents and teachers didn't tell you about the basics of workplace behavior. It covers topics as wideranging as office romance, the art of the handshake, business travel, cubicle life, email management, grooming, personal hygeine, meeting basics, safety and security, eating at the company buffet, and much more. I've never seen anything like it!
In the project management context, my own field, I might use it by flagging an applicable section with a yellow sticky and giving it to a project team member who is having trouble with one of these issues... to gently communicate how s/he might improve. And for only $13.95, it's a real bargain.
Get it for the new employees... get it for anyone who needs to become indispensible at work ... get it for your kids before they start looking for work!

Are You Indispensable?.......2004-09-20
"First Hired, Last Fired" is a book designed to help one make him or herself indispensable in today's professional environment, where layoffs due to mergers or downswings in the economy are far too common, and the idea of lifetime employment is the thing of the past. The first section of the book contains useful information on the qualities of mind and personal characteristics that people who are considered indispensable in the workplace appear to possess. The second section helps your measure yourself against those characteristics and plan your own program for becoming indispensable. The third section deals with helping you develop those characteristics and qualities that you feel are missing from your repertoire.
I picked up this book just as I started a new job, figuring that I might as well use all the help I can get in setting off on the right foot in my new career. A natural quesiton might arise: why not just work hard, do the job you're supposed to do, meet all the deadlines, etc.? The author argues (and I agree with him) that simple hard work and dedication are no longer enough to make you indispensable. They are just the pre-requisites. After all, how many such hard-working and dedicated people do you know that are either not treated well by their employers or are let go while somebody seemingly much less deserving gets promoted? This is where this book comes in handy, as it spells out exactly which qualities will make you indispensable (and they may not be what you think!).
What I also like about this book is that it's interactive. For example, it provides an opportunity to evaluate yourself on the 18 dimensions of indispensability. Having done that, you get a much clearer picture where you need to do the most work. The book also helps you prioritize your efforts, so that you do not spread yourself too thin by working on too many things at once. Then, it guides you through a series of targeted exercises and recommendations, aimed at ehnancing specific indispensability attributes.
Overall, I found this book to be extremely practical and useful. Although I got my copy at the library, I've already renewed it twice and am now thinking of actually purchasing one for myself - so that I would have it handy for easy reference!
I liked this book.......2000-02-10
Successful books usually confirm what we know to be true. I felt that about this book. The authors have over twenty-five years of consulting to companies and observing people in the workplace. They know what they are talking about and it shows clearly. For this book they interviewed more than sixty bosses and coworkers of "indispensable" employees. These "first hired, last fired" people each have at least two but usually more of these six characteristics.
·They see the whole system behind the problem. They don't oversimplify complex issues.
·They don't stick narrowly to their own job but take responsibility for success of the whole enterprise. They act like "owners".
·They are ready to interact with and help others but only in limited ways and only when needed.
·They are cooperative, not competitive with others inside the company. They are relatively free from company politics, tensions and conflicts.
·They have a can-do attitude.
·They are adaptable to change.
In the books first section-"What indispensable People Are Like"-the authors quote liberally from their interviews, painting vivid pictures of the six qualities and how individuals showed them in their daily work. The rest of the book, and its main part, guides readers in "Becoming an Indispensable Person" with many suggestions, exercises and questionnaires to help you become the kind of person others need and like to work with.
But for me the book is a guide enjoying any job. Trying just a few of the suggestions should increase anyone's satisfaction with their work life. The book is down to earth and makes sense. I enjoyed it.

Book Description
Many different mathematical and statistical methods are essential in crop modeling. They are necessary in the development, analysis and application of crop models. Up to now, however, there has been no single source where crop modelers could learn about these methods. Furthermore, these methods are often described in other contexts and their application to crop modeling is not always straightforward.
This book aims at making a large range of relevant mathematical and statistical methods accessible to crop modelers. Each methodology chapter starts from basic principles and simple applications and builds gradually to state-of-the-art methods. Crop models are used as examples, and practical advice on applying the methods to crop models is given.
Working with Dynamic Crop Models is an essential learning and reference resource for students and researchers who want to understand and apply rigorous methods to crop models. This book will also be of value for other fields which use dynamic models of complex systems.
Topics covered include:
* Parameter estimation- including Bayesian methods
* Model evaluation- including prediction quality and decision quality
* Sensitivity analysis- including global analysis and interactions
* Data assimilation- the Kalman filter and extensions
* Management optimization- including stochastic optimization
* Models for multiple fields- emphasizing how to obtain input values
* Crop models and crop breeding - recent advances in using crop
