If you have horses, you need this book. Even if you never plan to harness a horse in your life, you need this book. A greenhorn born in the big city, I found myself making a living in the country with a naughty pony and several untried young horses. I bought books, went to county fairs, talked to old hands. But what got me going in training my own was a combination of common sense, patience via a love of the animals, and this book. Plain and simple.

Lynn's drawings and photos are exactly perfect. He explains everything with just enough detail but never too much. He has a realistic, kind approach that guarantees to turn out a trusting, trustworthy working equine. For instance, using his methods for introducing a harness, I had an untried colt quietly accepting a harness within 20 minutes, with never a raised voice or tense moment, and by myself. Just the way it should be done.

No kidding. This is the book to get.

I found this book more useful than any other on the subject of training horses. It is in plain old english, easy for anyone to understand. Along with telling you how to do something there are step by step photos so you know exactly what the guy is talking about. Anyone that is training horses to drive or work should have this book. It's good for general training too.

Topics include nuclear physics and stellar energy sources, the equation of state of stellar material, phenomenological approaches to convection, and modern numerical techniques for computation of stellar evolution. Keeping pace with recent developments, the authors incorporate important elements such as asteroseismology, and the effects of rotation and magnetic fields. The text contains the source code for two useful programs, ZAMS (for constructing chemically homogeneous zero-age main sequence models) and PULS (to study the seismological properties of the ZAMS models). Some chapters include exercises. The diskette can be used on any computer with a FORTRAN compiler.

This reprint of the 1939 book by Chandrasekhar lets you read through one of the major works on the evolution of a star. The author takes physics equations, labouriously discovered over centuries, in terrestrial environments. He applies them logically to the vastly different circumstances of a star. Yet, step by step, he shows how we can arrive at an understanding of stellar processes that jibes with much that was observable in the 1930s. A tribute to the precision and insight of his thinking, as well as to the power of physics to model phenomena anywhere in the universe.

Actually, in the subsequent decades, the equations derived in the book held up quite well as coherent explanations of stars. While the field has moved on, the explanatory pedagogy given in this book may still often be seen in recent astrophysics texts.

What happens in the lifetime of a star? This basically is the subject of the book. It describes from basic physical principles where ever possible how a star is formed and how it burns. Kippenhahn shows how inside a star, the gravitational pressure is necessarily balanced by the outgoing radiation and matter pressure.

We see the cycle of how a star burns its hydrogen, synthesising helium in the process. Then, how heavier elements are formed. Finally, whether a star novas or not, depending on its mass.

The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is shown as a concise way to describe the lifecycle trajectory of a star, over billions of years.

Well suited for physics students.

the book is alright, the 2nd half is just qualitative discussion, most of which you've proabably already heard. the first half is the best, gives all of the equations of stellar structure, but has some really annoying convensions -- it's in MKS units, and it denotes luminosity by 'F' which really threw me off at first. hmmm, the conversation is a little uninspiring too...

This is a nice book that covers a lot of astrophysical concepts. The level of detail is fair for a first introduction into the subject and the style is easy to follow. However, the different topics are introduced one after the other without a clear motivation. This makes the book a bit confusing.

Excellent book for beginners.......2004-05-16

A truly excellent introductory book. It has worked problems at the back and actually has an index that allows you to find anything you need for reference. I actually used this book more than Padmanabhan's books for my graduate course, because Prialnik explains things very well.

This is the first of six volumes collecting significant papers of the distinguished astrophysicist and Nobel laureate S. Chandrasekhar. His work is notable for its breadth as well as for its brilliance; his practice has been to change his focus from time to time to pursue new areas of research. The result has been a prolific career full of discoveries and insights, some of which are only now being fully appreciated.

Chandrasekhar has selected papers that trace the development of his ideas and that present aspects of his work not fully covered in the books he has periodically published to summarize his research in each area.

Volume 1, Stellar Structure and Stellar Atmospheres, covers primarily the period 1930-40 and includes early papers on the theory of white dwarfs. In the Preface, Chandrasekhar explains the criteria for selection and provides historical background. Each subsequent volume will include a foreword by an authority on the topics covered.
